Chairman’s
Corner
DEAR SANTA:
I
can’t remember the last time I wrote you a letter. Probably not since the days when my wish list included things
like Nancy Drew books, model horses, Barbie paraphernalia and my first two-wheeled bike (purple with a flower
print “banana” seat and tassels on the handle bars).
And even though I haven’t written in many years, you
always know just how to make each Christmas special.
You still make appearances at our family parties, manage
to leave me a full stocking on Christmas morning when it
was empty the night before, and remind me that I’m not
too old to delight in the holidays with all the enthusiasm
and joy of my childhood.
I love this time of year! I love the decorations, the
lights, the celebrations, the holiday spirit that infuses our
city – especially during Merriment on Main. By the way, I
hope you and Mother Nature got your differences worked
out and we have a beautiful clear night this year and not
the rainout we had last year. Either way, it is definitely one
of the highlights of the year for me and just one of many
things that make Vacaville so special.
I know you’re inundated with requests this time of year,
but I thought I’d write down a few of mine just in case you
can fit them in. Here are a few things on my wish list for
the Vacaville Chamber of Commerce.
• That our mixers, Business Issues Education Forums,
and other networking events are well attended and have
value for our attendees.
• That the new endeavors with our schools and County
Office of Education for workforce development and career
education provide our youth with new insight and a desire
to work for businesses in our community.
• That our current members renew their membership
commitment each year and that we continue to add new
members to the Chamber,
strengthening our voice for
business.
• That our Ambassadors and
volunteers know how much they’re appreciated and continue
to have energy for and devotion to the Chamber’s success.
• That the excitement I have for our new Innovation
Expo (March 24, 2016) is contagious and brings widespread support from attendees and sponsors.
I’m sure that’s not the usual wish list you get, but I’ve
heard it said that Christmas is a “commercial holiday”
focused on spending. I think that’s only one aspect of it,
but it is definitely one that supports business, which is
what the Chamber is all about, so it seems sort of natural
that you might keep businesses in mind while you’re out
making your rounds. And if you have to pass off any of
your shopping duties, please remind the elves to shop local
when they can.
I know not everyone is fortunate enough to indulge in
the retail frenzy of Christmas, and like I said, that’s only
one aspect of it. I think the real holiday spirit is in little
things like holding open a door for someone, saying thank
you, smiling at people, a walk to see the lights on Candy
Cane and Lollipop Lanes, singing Christmas carols, and
enjoying time with family and friends. Those are just a few
of the things that put me “in the spirit” and whatever it is
that brings others joy and fun this season I hope you bring
to them.
Well, that’s about it. I’ll make sure to leave out cookies
for you and carrots for the reindeer on Christmas Eve, and
if you ever figure out how to bring me a pony down the
chimney, I still haven’t given up on that one since my first
wish lists!
Happy Holidays!

President’s
Corner
consider a charitable gift
M
any of us expand our gift-giving spirit as
Christmas approaches. We begin making lists of family and friends, co-workers
and employees of whom we want to lavish.
Local charities are then added to our list; at
times, the charitable gifts are in lieu or honor of those we
consider dear. The Vacaville community, both individuals
and businesses, are generous.
We support our interests and needs – children, churches, the arts, schools and social services. Contribution of
time and monies to organizations allows us to collectively
support our community. This combined impact is greater
than what we can accomplish otherwise.
What will your impact be in 2015? 2016? I ask that
you commit to volunteer 10 or more hours in a year. My
husband and I have committed to volunteering with our
church, our children’s school and their swim team. We not
only spend time with our family and model the behavior, we invest in programs that we want to see succeed.
Further, the median charitable gifting ratio per household
is approximately 2.5 percent of adjusted gross income (per
the Chronicle of Philanthropy). Does your business and
household have plans to reinvest a portion of your income
into the community?
Vacaville is blessed to have many local organizations
serving our community. Please contact one that interests

How long have you been an Ambassador? 2½ years
Why do you volunteer? Being an Ambassador allows me
to interact directly with more members of the business community and I can be involved in specific activities that help
the Chamber events operate smoothly. By being an active
volunteer for the Chamber, I have met many other hardworking, wonderful people who do so much for the Chamber
and I have developed very good friendships with.
What’s your favorite Ambassador memory? I really enjoy
the annual Christmas morning mixer where everyone in the
community comes together for a fantastic breakfast and everyone brings a raffle prize and everyone wins. There is a great
feeling of community at the event and it always reminds me
of why Vacaville is a great place to live.
Why is the Chamber of Commerce valuable? I believe
that having a strong Chamber of Commerce is very valuable
to the community because it helps
represent the business community
and helps demonstrate the strength
and diversity of businesses in the
area. Our city’s economic health is
very dependent on having a healthy
business community and the
Chamber of Commerce provides
different resources to help businesses.
What would others be surprised to learn about you? I have
always been a great fan of the San Francisco sports teams and
used to work at Candlestick Park as a vendor at the Giants
and 49ers games.
Why Vacaville? I have lived permanently live in Vacaville
for 10 years now and for about the first seven years I commuted to the Bay Area for work every day and did not meet
many new people or get to know the area very well. When I
changed careers and started working locally I found out just
how little I knew of the people and the business atmosphere
of the area. By joining and becoming an active member of the
Vacaville Chamber of Commerce for the past 3 years, I have
discovered what a great place Vacaville is to live and work in
and I have developed relationships that I have benefitted from
personally and professionally.

Business Spotlight
Chamber Member Since 1985
First Northern Bank: Helping Local
Businesses Grow and Prosper
I
n 1910, a group of local Dixon businesspeople believed they
weren’t getting the kind of banking services they needed, so
in the do-it-yourself tradition of an independent farming
community, they voted January 20 to open their own bank –
an “enterprise with all local capital and no outside investment
or affiliations.”
Following a trip to San Francisco to purchase a safe and
supplies, the new bank opened for business February 1 in a
former ice cream parlor. After one month in business, the Bank
had 93 accounts with deposits totaling more than $75,000.
Today, 105 years since the Bank opened, deposits have
grown to $898 million. Even though a century has passed,
descendants of the Bank’s founders are still shareholders and
customers.
While other banks have come and gone over the years, First
Northern Bank has steadfastly remained strong and independent, setting its own course and making credit decisions at the
local level.
As a result, the Bank can respond quickly to customers’
needs and changing business conditions.
At First Northern, We Mean Business!
First Northern was established to help local businesses
grow and prosper. In many cases, these businesses have grown
with the Bank, as both started small, expanded over time, and
strengthened the local economy through their success.
Today, the Bank specializes in relationship banking,
employing experts in the area of small business, commercial,
agribusiness, and real estate lending, as well as wealth management.
“Our business clients tell us all the time that our relationship-banking culture is head and shoulders above the rest,”
says Jeff Adamski, Executive Vice President and Senior Loan
Officer. “That’s because we believe every loan customer – big
or small – benefits from a personalized solution based on their
own unique situation.”
Financing solutions include green energy initiative loans,
business acquisition and expansion loans, working capital loans,
equipment financing and leasing, business lines of credit, and
Small Business Administration (SBA) loans.
No. 1 Small Business Lender in Solano County
“We’re grateful to serve so many successful businesses in the
region,” says President & CEO Louise Walker. “Our customers
know they can count on us to anticipate their needs because we
take the time to understand those needs. We use this knowledge, in turn, to create new banking products, improve service,
and operate more efficiently.
For example, in 2014, First Northern Bank became the
region’s leading community bank in clean-energy lending. “Our
goal is to help our clients control expenses, reduce greenhouse
gas emissions, and protect the physical environment on which
economic activity depends,” says Walker, who also serves as
treasurer for the Solano County Economic Development
Corporation.
In 2014, First Northern ranked as the #1 local small business lender in a list of the Top 25 Small Business Lenders in
Solano County. This ranking is based on data from the Federal
Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC).
First Northern has maintained its Bauer
5-Star “Superior” rating from BauerFinancial,
the nation’s leading independent bank rating
and research firm. To earn this rating, the Bank
must excel in areas of capital adequacy, liquidity,
profitability and asset quality.
Commitment to the Community
First Northern Bank well understands the parallels between
being a banker and a community volunteer – it comes down to
trust. “We listen to people, find out what they need, and help
them find solutions,” says Karen Seymour, Vice President/
Financial Services Manager of the Vacaville Financial Center
and a member of the Vacaville Chamber of Commerce Board
of Directors.
Over the past 10 years, First Northern Bank employees
have volunteered more than 60,500 hours of their time for
community service – providing the equivalent of more than
29 full-time staff people. In fact, Karen is one of the Bank’s
community service super stars. Since 2006, she has recorded

2,291 hours of community service, placing her fourth in a list
of the Bank’s Top 10 volunteers. Last year, Karen’s civic activities included working on the Vacaville Festival of Trees Raffle at
Christmastime, serving as a Chamber Ambassador, and walking
to end Alzheimer’s.
Since 2005, the Bank has donated nearly $1.5 million in cash
and in-kind services to over 200 nonprofit organizations,
45 percent of which are serving people and families in need.
2015 is Seeing a Stronger Business Climate
2015 has brought new opportunities -- to bring banking to
increasingly more mobile customers, to help first-time buyers
achieve the dream of home ownership, and to continue providing a superior level of service that customers expect and deserve.
CEO Walker adds, “The region has made a strong recovery to
near pre-recession levels, small businesses are once again expanding, and we’re here to help those businesses succeed.”
