the mistake of not having a canine
companion for almost 10 years after
losing my beloved golden retriever,
Tammy, in 1996. I didn’t have the
heart to replace her, but that was a
big mistake! Once Brandi came into
my life I couldn’t imagine my life
without her!
Can you describe your dog? Brandi is an 11-year-old Goldendoodle.
She is a playful 59 pounds. She is
affectionate, obedient, lovable, intuitive, and intelligent, and she does
everything she can to make us happy.
Tell us what you like about your
dog? Brandi is a dog with attitude!
She waits for the mailman every day and loves to greet people at the door.
She reminds me to laugh at the most stressful of times, and makes everyone
around her smile. She worries about us all and gives me unconditional love.
She teaches me to appreciate the simple things.
How do you feed and care for your dog? We feed her very few table scraps
and she is fed a specialty dog food called Wilderness Blue. She also gets
healthy treats.
What activities do you enjoy with your dog? She comes to work with us at
Carefree Travel and has office duties that include greeting customers, or fetching their tickets for them, and she doubles as our therapy dog in the office. She
loves walks with “Grandma” and has a special frisbee we call her “ Flippy”
that is her all-time favorite!
What’s the best dog you ever had? Explain: Every dog is special, but Brandi has a piece of my heart. She is fiercely loyal, and so affectionate.
Tell us your favorite dog story: Five years ago I tripped and fell while running down my spiral stairway! Brandi came running down the stairs. She laid
down beside me and started whining. I don’t think she knew what to do for
me. A minute later she quickly ran out of the room and returned with a pair
of socks and laid them in front of me. It was the only thing she could think of
to make things better.

We have always had dogs on our
farm and I have been here since 1953.

dog, Gabby, is 9 years old. She is a
yellow Lab.
Tell us what you like about your dog?
Our dog loves to be around people.
Our children and grandchildren love
her. She’s not a dog who jumps on
people, she just likes to be close to
you at all times.
How do you feed and care for your
dogs? We get Exclusive dog food
from the Country Store in Sauk Centre. We also keep up with her shots
and other things through the Lake
Country Vets in Albany.
What activities do you enjoy with
your dogs? Gabby loves to play with
her ball and frisbee. It’s fun watching
her go through the snow to catch the
frisbee. She also loves rides on the
gator and truck and loves to go along
to pick up round bales with the flatbed. She is a great listener; she seems to
know exactly what you are saying.
What’s the best dog you ever had? Explain: We have had a lot of great
dogs so it’s hard to pick our favorite dog but Gabby is on the top of the
list. We also had some great cattle dogs. The one I remember most is a dog
named Rex. He was part collie.
Tell us your favorite dog story: I was in the calf barn when I looked out
the window and saw Gabby running about 100 mph and a cat right behind
chasing her; it looked really funny.

$9 corn and $21 soybeans

At the West Central Research and Outreach Center
(WCROC), Morris, nearly
50% of our crop acres are
on certified organic land.
This allows us the opportunity to objectively compare
organic and conventional
systems. Currently, organic
corn is trading above $9.00
per bushel and soybeans
are trading above $21.00
per bushel. Similar to
conventional crop prices,
organic prices are down
from several years ago.
However, these numbers
are still enticing farmers
to look at converting their
farm, or parts of their farm,
to an organic system. Transitioning to an organic system can pose some unique
challenges. The shift to
an organic system needs
careful consideration and
planning.
In 2015, we averaged
about 150 bushels per acre
on our organic corn and
165 bushels per acre on
our conventional corn. Our
conventional corn yields
may seem low, but there are
few contributing factors to
the low yield. First of all,
our best land is in the organic
system not the conventional

system. Secondly, we had a
wind storm in the summer
of 2015 that damaged our
conventional crops more
than our organic crops. By
comparison, the value of
our corn crop per acre was
$1350 (organic) and $536
(conventional), if you price
conventional corn at $3.25
per bushel.
Corn is an easier crop
to raise organically than
soybeans. Weeds are more
difficult to control in organic
soybean fields, and little can
be done to control soybean
aphids. In the past, we have
raised 25 bushel per acre soybeans in our organic system.
Certainly not a stellar yield
when compared to conventionally grown soybeans
where fields can average 40
to 50 bushel per acre or more.
If we use the current $21 per
bushel rate, our estimated
gross income would be $525
per acre on 25 bushel per acre
yield. If we use $8.25/bushel
for conventional soybeans
and have a 45 bushel per
acre yield, our gross income
is $371.25 per acre.
While the organic numbers may look really good,
there are costs and risks
involved with organic crop
farming. Organic certification requires at least three
crops in a rotation. This
means either a small grain

or alfalfa crop which in turn
means owning, or having
access to, a grain drill and
having the necessary equipment to harvest these crops.
Another factor to consider
is managing the fertility of
the fields. At the WCROC,
we have swine and dairy
manure which we apply to
the fields to enhance organic
matter in the soil. We also
plant alfalfa as a feed source
for the WCROC organic
dairy herd. This makes
our organic system easier
to manage as compared to
someone that does not have
livestock on their farm.
One of the biggest challenges with organic crop
production is weed control.
Weeds can be controlled by
modifying planting dates,
crop rotation, harrowing,
and cultivation. This proves
to be more time consuming than the conventional
system; and there is a considerable learning curve
for creating a successful
organic cropping system.

pounds, butter fat runs from 3.8 to 4.0%, protein 3.5%. A good number of cows will be recently
fresh with a few due soon after sale time. Cows are all AI bred using leading sires including: Mogul,
Supersire, MVP, Masterful and Trumpet. Cows are handled in a tie-stall facility. Along with a good
set of young cows, we offer a nice group of bred and open heifers that are just right for pasture.

NOTE: A huge thank you to all consignors and buyers for making this one of the largest, best attended auction
events in the Upper Midwest. The local community would like to welcome you to Long Prairie where we have several
lodging and eating establishments ready to serve you. This auction will again be featuring several complete, partial
and individual farmer and dealer consignments. You can expect many more items by the auction date than listed, as
consignments will be arriving daily. Consignments will be accepted until Wednesday, April 6th at 3:00 p.m. whether
previously consigned or not. Sale Schedule: 8:30 a.m. sharp Ring #1 will be selling a small load of miscellaneous items,
then right on to shop tools, ATV’s, lawn & garden equipment, followed by as many rows as possible in the main lot before
11:00 a.m. at which time we will begin selling on the north end of row #1. This is the row adjacent to Highway 71 and
working our way westward in the main lot until all rows in main lot are sold. Ring #2: At approx. 8:45 will begin selling
the northwest lot with building materials, tires, livestock items and miscellaneous items. Ring #3: At approx. 9:00 a.m.
will begin selling farm equipment and miscellaneous rows in the west lot. At approx 1:00 p.m. ring #3 will begin selling
the east/west rows in the south lot which includes most vehicles, trailers and farm machinery in those rows. As we will
be selling in multiple rings, please bring a friend so as not to miss any items. MN sales tax will apply on all taxable items.
Transfer fees, sales tax and registration on all titled items the day of the auction. Parking: There will be basically no
parking space at auction site. Parking lots with shuttle service to and from the auction site will be running all day. The
best parking is located 2 blocks north and 2 blocks west of auction site. Please do not park in the lots of area businesses
as Saturday is an important day of commerce and they will need this space for their customers. Terms: Please review
all terms of auction company. All buyers must register with clerk and obtain a bidding number to participate in this
auction. While we do our best to describe all consignments, buyers are responsible for inspecting all items and will be
buying all items as is, where is. All items must be settled for within one hour of the auction. All items must be removed
from our lot no later than May 9th, 2016 to allow for mowing and general cleanup for our fall auction. Proxibid Online

Court Reporters Help Record Veterans’ Stories
(NAPSA)—Once again, court
reporters are making sure that the
stories of America’s veterans are
recorded for future generations.
2013 marks the tenth consecutive year that the Veterans History Project (VHP) has worked
with the National Court Reporters
Foundation (NCRF) and the
National Court Reporters Association (NCRA).
The mission of the Veterans
History Project at the Library of
Congress American Folklife Center is to collect, preserve and make
accessible the personal accounts of
American war veterans so that
future generations may hear
directly from veterans and better
understand the realities of war.
U.S. Representative Ron Kind
(WI-3) proposed the Veterans History Project after interviewing
veterans in his own family at a
reunion. His wife, Tawni, a court
reporter, knew that transcriptions
would ensure the accessibility of
interview content.
To date, more than 2,800 interviews in the VHP collection have
been transcribed by court reporters. Once a court reporter transcribes an interview, the transcription is sent to the Library of
Congress to be added to the veteran’s collection, and in many
cases, it is digitized so that the public may access the transcript online.
Not only do court reporters
serve VHP by transcribing oral
histories that are submitted to the
Library of Congress, they also
dedicate their time as volunteer
interviewers.

and with court reporters who
unselfishly volunteer their time

NCRF is also an ardent ambassador for VHP, and has promoted
“VHP Days on Campus” at various
court-reporting schools and firms.
Most recently, NCRA held a “VHP
Day” during the 2012 NCRA Convention in Philadelphia, and is
planning a VHP Day during the
2013 NCRA Convention in Nashville, Tenn.
In addition to recorded interviews, VHP also depends on volunteers to donate veterans’ original photographs, letters, military
documents, diaries, journals, twodimensional artwork and unpublished memoirs.
NCRF is a 501(c)(3) charitable
organization, and the philanthropic arm of the 18,000-member
professional association for stenographic court reporters, NCRA.
