María Teresa Macías Gallardo, DAMUN Advisor

Dear Mrs. Macías:
It is with great pride and privilege that I address this letter to you appealing to the D’Amicis Model United Nations
18th Edition announcement and looking forward to developing an outstanding role within the conference.
To begin with, I must admit that I fell in love with Model UN when I was a 2 nd grader in Junior High
School and it has been my passion ever since. Hence, I have participated in eleven different conferences as a
delegate –acquiring eight recognitions awarding my participation-, and one time as a chair member. As a result, I
have developed several skills that put me in front of many of my coevals, such as confidence at decrying, building
equate speeches, and impeccable persuasion skills.
Throughout my experience as a delegate and a world’s citizen I have sadly noticed and chided the
poisonous environment in which most young people are being raised: an environment in which freedom of
expression seems pretty much a utopia due to the tension between political figures, citizens, journalists and rebel
groups; constant limitations imposed on social media, such as setting your own thoughts in only 140 characters. Our
environment demands that ideas seize to be developed and become rather simple and daily to be accepted which
provides as a result abruptly revolutionary people who seek to talk their minds whatever it costs.
And in that precise moment of crisis relays the importance of Model UN: society withholds the
dissemination of its meaning, its power, and knowledge. Today, for both diplomats and citizens it is more important
than ever to seek to understand, rather than been understood. Therefore, the value of a delegate is as worth as the
value of its ideas and its courage for standing up and speak, but overall, its courage for sitting and listen.
For these reasons I would be pleased to serve as the following Secretary General for the DAMUN 18 th
Edition. This experience will enable myself not only to share further develop my abilities of public speaking,
debating, solving problems, and teamwork; but inhibiting the sense of resignation and lack of free-will in the
DAMUN team and every single person involved in the project.
Even though it will be flabbergasting and thrilling having the chance to transmit what I have learnt in my
experience, the most important lesson I will be part of, is the one the new-born delegates, the future Secretariat,
chair members, advisors, and classmates are going to give me: starting from developing social skills such as
tolerance and patience, through new and fresh perspectives and ideas. I am well aware that I will not teach them how
to be outstanding delegates, chairs, citizens, and much less I will be teaching them how to solve international issues,
but the greatest satisfaction of leading such a project will be watching my team reach their personal and collective
goals and doing it by themselves and through peaceful manners as learnt in Model UN.

Sincerely

Sofía Huidobro Blanco

Model United Nations
“The United Nations is our one great hope for a peaceful and free world”
-Ralph Bunche
Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the UN General Assembly, UN Security Council, or other
multilateral body, which introduces students to the world of diplomacy, negotiation, and decision making.
At Model UN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors of countries that are members of the UN, from
Argentina to Zimbabwe. The students, better known as “delegates”, debate current issues on the organization’s vast
agenda. They prepare draft resolutions, plot strategy, negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts,
and navigate the UN’s rules of procedure – all in the interest of resolving problems that affect the world.
Before playing out their ambassadorial roles in Model UN, students research the particular global problem
to be addressed. The problems are drawn from today’s headlines. Model UN delegates learn how the international
community acts on its concerns about peace and security, human rights, the environment, food and hunger,
economic development, and globalization.
Model UN delegates also look closely at the needs, aspirations, and foreign policy of the country they will
“represent” at the event. The insights they gain from their exploration of history, geography, mathematics, culture,
economics, and science contribute to the authenticity of the simulations once the actual role-playing gets underway,
and ensures a lively and memorable experience.
Model UN not only involves young people in the study and discussion of global issues, but also encourages
the development of skills useful throughout their lives – skills including research techniques, writing, public
speaking, problem-solving, conflict resolution, compromise, and cooperation.
The popularity of participating in Model UN has contributed to the rapid growth of this activity over the
past several decades. In fact, quite a few of today’s leaders in law, government, business, and the arts participated in
Model UN during their academic careers – from U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, to Chelsea Clinton and
actor Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction).
As many countries and states move to implement standards for global citizenship, Model UN is proving to
be an innovative resource to prepare students for career and college success.

D’Amicis Model United Nations
“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great”
-Zig Zagler
DAMUN has been an outstanding Model UN not only in the city, but among several states in Mexico. However,
such recognition didn’t come from one day to the other: the Model had to suffer several changes and reforms in
order to acquire the prestige it owns today.
In spite of that, I am looking forward to reset DAMUN from its very roots in order to let it grow, make
more people get involve in the project, and most important: let the project transcend.

The Battery Project
“If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl.
But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”
-Martin Luther King Jr.
The Battery Project consists mainly on the establishment of a new organization chart under which the D’Amicis
Model United Nations will be carried out. This new organization chart is based on the real organization chart of the
United Nations Organization, thus it will not only allow more people to participate actively in the project, but will
allow the Secretariat and Advisor entrust activities and responsibilities in an easier, clearer and more transparent
way.

Each department will have its own mission and objective during the DAMUN process. The mission will be
decided by the team (when it is already decided who will carry out which role) and the objective will be determined
by the Secretary General, the Sub-Secretary General, and the Advisor. However, here are some possible objectives
per department.

4

A) Advisor: will be in charge of guiding, supervising, and monitoring the DAMUN team and the Model
process. This person will have a vote in the decision making processes, however, this vote will be equal to
the vote of the Secretariat and the Presidents.
B) The Secretariat: this department will be working with seven people who will be demanded to be keen on
communication and leadership since they will be in charge of the organizational part of the model. They
will have a vote that’s equal to the Advisor and the Presidents’ vote.
a. Secretary General: This person will be in charge of guiding, supervising, monitoring the DAMUN
team and providing aid and advice to its team when necessary. The Secretary General must be
someone who really represents the team’s ideals, mission, vision, values and objectives and that
knows how to develop the project based on them.
i. Sub-Secretary General: Will be the Secretary General’s “right hand”. This person will
serve as the immediate authority of the project in case the Secretary General cannot assist
to a meeting, conference, or workshop.
b. Secretary for Academic Affairs: This person will be in charge of carrying out the protocol at all
moments during and before the conference. He, along with his team, will establish the DAMUN’s
Charter1.
i. Under-Secretary for Chairs: This person will be working along with the Presidents and
will be in charge of providing training programmes to the chair members (moderator,
president and secretary), focusing on the protocol, authority figures, discipline, and selfcontrol.
ii. Under-Secretary for Delegates: This person will be in working along with the Hospitality
team and will be in charge of providing training programmes to internal and external
delegates. During the training workshops future delegates must develop public speaking
and writing skills, as well as social studies general knowledge; English language
improvement; geography knowledge (from the National Geography Content Standards);
and Civics and government that may lead the delegate to a better understanding of global
politics.
c. Secretary for Hospitality: This person shall be available at all moments, either for the DAMUN
team or for anyone interested in participating in the Model. He or She will be in charge of hosting
the external schools coming to DAMUN by sending them a formal invitation, visiting the schools’
facilities if necessary, and accompanying them at all moments during the conference.
i. Under-Secretary for Facilities: this person will be in charge of programing activities for
foreign schools, as well as elaborating a plan which establishes the lodgement, meals,
transport inside the city, etc.
ii. Under Secretary for Placement: this person will be in charge of placing the delegates in
the right committees according to its experience and abilities. This job is utterly
important provided that not-well-placed delegates may slow the debate and cause
unnecessary tensions within the committee.
d. Secretary for Finances: This person will be working along with the Advisor and must be honest,
transparent, and respectful at all times since he/she will be managing most of the capital coming in
and out DAMUN. He/she must be overage and be able to open a bank account for DAMUN
purposes.
i. Under-Secretary for Sponsors: this person will be in charge of getting and managing
sponsors necessary for the conference. He/she will be in charge of negotiating with
sponsors and will be working along with the Image and Communication Department by
promoting sponsors at all times during the conference.
ii. Under-Secretary for Accounting: this person will be in charge of registering every capital
income or outcome of the Model, filing and storing every single receipt used during the
conference and writing a final paper in which all the previous is registered.

1 Which shall address the Dress Code, sanctions, awards (for delegates exclusively), rights and obligations of delegates, advisors,
chair members, Secretariat, and observers.

F)

Secretary for Culture Sector: this department will be in charge of commemorating the international
dates such as the International Women’s Day, Peace One Day, among others, and promoting them
not only among the DAMUN team, but the entire D’Amicis Community.
i. Under-Secretary for Events: will be in charge of planning social events inside the school
that involve international festivities, as well as the social event celebrated in DAMUN.
This person may also encourage IB students to participate in cultural events that count for
the Creativity, Action and Service programme.
f. Secretary for Image and Communication: This person will be in charge of planning the marketing
campaign for DAMUN and the different events. This department may develop a monthly
brochure, for instance. Furthermore, this department will be in charge of the constant updating of
DAMUN and social media and its website.
i. Under-Secretary for Design: This department will be in charge of the DAMUN’s image
upon delegates, advisors, professors, and the entire Model UN community. The creation
of the logo, posters, brochures, ID cards, placards, and canvas.
ii. Under-Secretary for Technology: this department will be in charge of implementing a
Model UN cyber-programme in all committees that allows chair members use the
projectors and interactive whiteboards. Also, developing the DAMUN website, along
with the test of the Image and Communication team.
g. Secretary for External Relations and Cooperation: this person will be in charge of providing
DAMUN the attention from the surrounding community, as well as enhancing and reinforcing the
ties with public figures with the Model, but not only that, obtaining recognition and support for the
model and charity activities.
i. Under-Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs: this person will be in charge of making
DAMUN transcend by providing aid to developing communities, planning an
environmental help programme, etc.
ii. Under-Secretary for Media: this department will be in charge of letting the media know
DAMUN and let DAMUN grow within the media support, by having TV or radio
audiences, getting the magazines and journals’ interest, etc.
President of the Security Council: This person will be in charge of the intelligence and academic part of the
Model: by managing the Security Council and its subsidiary organs such as the Counter-Terrorism and
Non-proliferation Committees, Military Staff Committee, Sanctions Committees, Staffing Committees and
Ad Hoc Bodies, Peacekeeping Operations, International Tribunals, Advisory Subsidiary Bodies. This
person will be in charge of supervising the writing processes of the committees’ backgrounds and will have
a vote during the decision making processes.

the Model: by managing the General Assembly and its subsidiary organs such as Boards, Commissions,
Committees, Councils and Panels, Working Groups, among others. This person will be in charge of
supervising the writing processes of the committees’ backgrounds and will have a vote during the decision
making processes.
President of the Economic and Social Council: This person will be in charge of the intelligence and
academic part of the Model: by managing the Economic and Social Council and its subsidiary organs such
as the ECOSOC Functional Commissions, ECOSOC Regional Commissions, ECOSOC Standing
Committees, Expert bodies composed of governmental experts, Expert bodies composed of members
serving in their personal capacity, and other related bodies. This person will be in charge of supervising the
writing processes of the committees’ backgrounds and will have a vote during the decision making
processes.
President of the International Court of Justice: This person will be in charge of the intelligence and
academic part of the Model: by managing the International Court of Justice and the perfect implementation
of International Law at all moments of the debate. This person will be in charge of supervising the writing
processes of the committee’s background and will have a vote during the decision making processes.

The Project A
Once read The Battery Project, it will be easier for me to explain the second part of the reforms to the D’Amicis
Model United Nations. The creation of the Culture Sector and External Relations and Cooperation departments has
the main intention of letting DAMUN grow and expand into an unknown sector of its surroundings. Even though the
past Humanitarian Affairs teams have tried to give DAMUN a human sense, they’ve completely failed at it.
6

The Project A establishes the bases for IB students, MYP students, and delegates in general, to have a much more
active participation in activities that allow them to help others and enrich themselves with charity and cultural
activities such as art expositions, concerts, museums, theatre plays, etc.
In addition, The Project A is based in the IB Learners Profile and will allow members of the D’Amicis
community participate in both the International Baccalaureate and the Model UN.
This are some activities the Project will be enhancing:

Design and create a mural at school.
Plan and execute an art project for kids at a residential treatment centre.
Plan and execute an art project at a school where students don’t have art.
Choreograph and participate in dance routine for sports events being hosted in the school’s facilities.
Perform music and dance in a new or especially challenging context (public audience, large audience,
competition context)
Do a world map mural project with younger students and teach about geography.
Plan a musical program and perform for hospital patients.
Teach art/music/dance to another person/group of people, estrangers may be.
Design an awareness campaign for an environmental issue. This could include creating posters, creative
announcements, and creative presentations.
Create a mini photography exposition with a clearly defined theme, objective, and goal.
Write a speech on UN Day theme per classroom.
Start a debate team in Junior High School and Elementary School.
Design programs for UN Day/World Spelling Day/World Maths Day/International Literacy Day/Any other
Day.
Find an ugly wall in your neighbourhood and design a mural for it.
Create a historical walking tour of Hiroshima or other nuclear event in English with map and signs
explaining the historical significance.

P) The Innovation and Technology Project
Q) The Innovation and Technology is included in The Battery Project under the Image and Communication
department. The main objective of this project is to allow DAMUN to look magnificent upon everyone’s
eyes: creating a logo, image and websites worthy of such a big and important event.
R)

This project will involve the Art Classes in the High School, making capital out of the young
artistic talents that the D’Amicis classrooms hold.
S)
It may as well draw on the technology that is been misused within the school’s facilities:
implementing tasks, workshops and conferences with the electronic devices that the institute may offer us.

T) The Outreach Programme
U) The Outreach Programme basically consists on sharing DAMUN with other Model UN schools in the
region. This way, we are incentivising other young leaders and future diplomats to enter the path of
arguing, peace talks and problem solving.
V)

The Outreach Programme seeks to share the knowledge that DAMUN has given us to others that
are only starting to discover the world of international agreements and politics. Moreover, it will allow
D’Amicis students to grow as citizens: to put themselves in the other side of the classroom and really
appreciate the teaching they’ve provided us with for so long; to prove that they really know what they say
they know by teaching; to develop skills of tolerance, patience and real diplomacy by being in the front of a
group.

W)

This specific project benefits every part involved: both the future delegates and the students
providing the training programs. It also expands the IB and UN values, profile and way of thinking.

Y) The Inception Programme
Z) The Inception Programme has the same basis of the Outreach Programme; however it is intended for
internal future delegates, specifically those in Junior High School.
AA)

The programme may reach as well a unification of both Junior High School and High School as
the magnificent team they might be. Seen as a long term programme, it will benefit DAMUN in the
following years due to the experience delegates have had since their early years. Also, it will reinforce the
MYP projects such as Public Speaking, Multimedia Presentation and even Project Play.

Conclusion

AD)As a matter of fact, each and every proposal has been carefully revised and planned in order to give
DAMUN a completely new sense for those who are not much involved into the project. These proposals
seek to unify the work of Art Classes, IB and MYP students, Elementary School students, external actors
and authorities of the school. If carried out, this project will totally increase the school’s status and
therefore, D’Amicis Model United Nations’ status.
