Implosion Clears Path for
Rockhill Greens Community
On April 15 the implosion of the 6700 Troost building took
place on the Research Brookside Campus, clearing a path for the
new 13-acre Rockhill Greens community. The concept for the
new development is an environmentally responsible community
including residential housing and commercial businesses,
seamlessly integrated into the existing medical uses that will
continue to be offered on the Research Brookside Campus.
The development will promote a healthy-living lifestyle and
sustainable design with parks, gardens, landscaping, and walking
trails throughout the campus. Research Medical Center will retain
the 6675 Holmes medical ofce building, the former hospital tower
building, and the connecting auditorium.
“We look forward to creating a unique mixed use community that focuses on a balance
of sustainability, community programming, and favorable returns for our investors,”
says Kelley Hrabe, president of The Net Giver, who will be the project manager for the
development.

National Donate Life Month
On April 13, in recognition of National Donate Life Month, Dana
Maguire, RN, Darinda Reberry, RN, and several members of Midwest
Transplant Network and Transplant Institute staff at Research Medical
Center dedicated two walls near the Intensive Care Unit. The rst
wall is the Tree of Life Donor Memorial, recognizing those patients
and families who have given the ultimate gift of life through organ,
tissue and eye donation. The second wall is the Health Resources
and Services Administration (HRSA) Medal of Honor, celebrating a
tradition of excellence in the care we provide those patients and how
we support their families.
Sam Sabaugh was a special guest at the event. Sam’s daughter, Alicia,
was an organ donor at Research Medical Center. Alicia was one of
72 honorees who were showcased for 47 million viewers through a “oragraph” portrait on the Donate Life oat in the 2012
Rose Parade. These honorees in their deaths gave life to others through organ, eye and tissue donation. Their portraits, each
made entirely of organic oral materials, were featured on huge oral
timepieces that remind us of the preciousness of time we have to spend
with our loved ones.
Each year, Midwest Transplant Network honors a local organ and tissue
donor hero through a oragraph on the Donate Life Rose Parade Float.
Donate Life’s oragraph honorees and oat riders represent all donors,
transplant recipients and candidates on the waiting list. The oat carried
thousands of roses with personal dedications of love and remembrance in
a unique Rose Dedication Garden.

In celebration of Nurses Week, we would like to honor the women and men
who go above and beyond to offer highly personalized, compassionate care for our
patients. These skilled professionals work in Johnson and Allen counties in Kansas,
and Cass, Jackson and Lafayette counties in Missouri. As the backbone of our
hospitals, our nurses provide our patients with quick-thinking, sound advice and
tireless dedication – not to mention hope and strength when they need it most.
Nurses, thank you for all that you do!

CASE STUDY
A Music City Hospital employee was at home one evening
reading the status updates her friends had posted on
Facebook. She notices that one of her co-workers from the
hospital posted the following: “Had a busy day at work today.
A 23-year-old guy was brought in with massive head injuries.
He was high on PCP and fell out a window.”
Was this posting permissible?
No. Posting patient information on a social media site such
as Facebook is a violation of EC.026, the Appropriate Use of
Communications Resources and Systems policy.
But no name was posted – how can this be PHI?
Information may still be considered PHI even when the name
is removed if certain identiers still exist. In this scenario,
the date of service can be derived because the poster said “at
work today” and Facebook dates and time stamps postings.
In addition, the information is considered sensitive due to the
reference to drug use.

Research Medical Center to Honor
Employee of the Year, Frist Humanitarian Winners
Join us on May 10 from 3-4 p.m. in the cafeteria as
we celebrate the 2011 Employee of the Year and Frist
Humanitarian Award recipients. The Frist Humanitarian
Awards recognize one employee, one volunteer and one
physician at each HCA-afliated facility who demonstrate
extraordinary concern for the welfare and happiness
of patients and their community. The awards are given
annually in recognition of the humanitarian spirit and
philanthropic work of the late Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr., a
founder of HCA. HCA has a long tradition of recognizing
those who embody the values and spirit of our culture.
Since 1972, these awards have recognized individuals who
demonstrate a level of commitment and caring that goes
beyond everyday acts of kindness, and who inspire us with
their compassion, dedication and spirit.
2011 EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR

always smiles and he does not let anything get him down.

Comprised of members of various departments, the
Healthy Habits Committee’s goal is to support and
encourage employees who want to live healthier and
happier lives through physical, emotional, social, and
intellectual growth. Healthy Habits has championed
many initiatives, including ‘The Biggest Loser,’ The
Wellness Garden as well as dance and Tai Chi classes. The
tireless efforts of the committee has resulted in consistent
recognition from the American Heart Association with the
Gold Fit-Friendly Company award in 2009, 2010, 2011
and 2012, which recognized Research Medical Center
for providing physical tness and healthy eating options
for employees, and for promoting a culture of wellness. If
you have an interest in starting a group that is consistent
with the Healthy Habits goal, contact Jan Horton at jan.

‘THE BIGGEST LOSER’ COMPETITION

THE WELLNESS GARDEN
The 48 garden beds at Research Medical Center are all
claimed with the majority of gardeners returning from
last year. Due to unusually warm weather, early planting
is taking place this year. Lettuce and other annual plants
are coming back from last year.. Gardeners have expressed
their appreciation of having a place to grow vegetables and
herbs in the full sun. One of the Kansas City Community
gardeners said she liked the garden because it is quiet and
peaceful. Visitors and patients also are beginning to visit.
HEALTHY HABITS PROMOTES PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
The Healthy Habits Committee encourages taking
the stairs rather than the elevators whenever possible.
Climbing stairs often is recommended as a weight loss
strategy and also has become a competitive sport, with
the number of races up the stairwells in some of the tallest
buildings around the world increasing every year. Climbing
stairs burns calories, which can help you better manage
your weight. For example, a 150 lb. person will burn about
544 calories just walking up stairs for an hour, according
to CaloriesPerHour.com. The sport of stair climbing, which
involves running up stairs rather than simply climbing
them, burns nearly twice as many calories as such sports as
volleyball and baseball, according to StairClimbingSport.
