The Dr. Oz show Visits Research Brookside Campus
‘15- Minute Physical’ offered to 1,000 pre-registered applicants; Dr. Oz presents health report card to Mayor Sly James
Dr. Mehmet Oz, two-time Emmy® Award-winning host of the two-time Emmy® Award-winning, nationally syndicated The Dr. Oz Show, gave Kansas City a “15-Minute Physical” in partnership with HCA Midwest Health System, Alere, Inc. and Practice Fusion on October 30, at the Research Brookside Campus. The “15 Minute Physical” consisted of a quick series of screening tests that included a lipid panel (HDL and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides), and blood glucose made possible on the Alere Cholestech LDX® System, a rapidly reading mobile lab device contributed by Alere, Inc. In addition to the blood test, registrants had their blood pressure and waist size measured. By linking these five important markers, a very basic idea of general risk for heart disease and diabetes can be determined. Screenings and consultations were provided by clinical staff from Research Medical Center, Belton Regional Medical Center, Menorah Medical Center, Midwest Family Physicians, GoppertTrinity Family Care, Research College of Nursing and Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. Upon learning the results, participants were advised whether they were in optimum health, should address any of the conditions, or follow-up with their primary care physician. By providing quick, basic information to people, life threatening chronic disease can be stopped in its tracks, which is the mission of the “15-Minute Physical.” Note: “Like” us on Facebook to view more photos from Dr. Oz’s visit on the Research Brookside Campus! Neurosurgeons recognized in prestigious listing of country’s 631 top neurosurgeons
Three physicians with Midwest Neurosurgery Associates and the Midwest Neuroscience Institute at Research Medical Center have been named as Top Doctors 2012 by U.S. News & World Report. Geoffrey L. Blatt, MD, Jonathan D. Chilton, MD, and William S. Rosenberg, MD are in the nation’s 631 top neurosurgeons and the top 10 percent of neurosurgeons in the region. The physicians are featured in a recently released report by U.S. News of 31,000 doctors in a wide range of medical specialties. The determination of the prestigious nomination is based on nominations submitted by physicians, which are reviewed by a physician-led research team. Blatt, Md, is board-certified in neurosurgery and has practiced in Kansas City for 20 years. Dr. Blatt earned his medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and performed his residency at State University of New York-Buffalo. His fellowship was conducted at Brown University in Rhode Island. Dr. Blatt has served as the president of the state and local Neurosurgical Societies as well as the National Council of Neurosurgery. He has special training in complex spine and spinal instrumentation, endoscopic and minimally-invasive surgery, radiosurgery and neurovascular surgery. Jonathan d. Chilton, Md, is boardcertified in neurosurgery and has practiced in Kansas City for 24 years. He received a master of public health degree from Columbia University in New York City and attended medical school at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, NY Dr. Chilton completed his neurosurgery residency at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. in 1988, including training in pediatric neurosurgery at Children's Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and training at the Atkinson Morley's Hospital in London, England. He completed board certification in neurosurgery in 1991 and is a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Chilton is the director of the Midwest Gamma Knife Center, which was the first dedicated cranial radiosurgery facility in the five-state Midwest region, and is the director of The Center for Facial Pain at the Midwest Neuroscience Institute, which offers comprehensive care for the diagnosis and treatment of all types of facial pain, including trigeminal neuralgia. His other areas of subspecialty interests include brain tumor and spine surgery.

Neurosurgeons Named Top Doctors by U.S. News & World Report
william S. rosenberg, Md, attended Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA in 1987 and completed his neurosurgical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1993. He is a fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgery and a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Dr. Rosenberg began his career with the Mayfield Clinic in Cincinnati, Ohio where he was director of Neurotrauma and Neurocritical Care at the University of Cincinnati and specialized in complex spinal surgery. Dr. Rosenberg was then recruited to co-direct the Neurospinal Disorders Program in the Department of Neurosurgery, University of California, San Francisco, from 1998-2002, where he co-founded the Spinal Biomechanics Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Rosenberg left academic neurosurgery in 2002, joining Midwest Neurosurgery Associates, out of a desire for greater focus on patient care and the ability to spend more time with family. In Kansas City, Dr. Rosenberg continued to pursue interests in complex spinal surgery. In addition, he expanded his area of expertise to include the treatment of chronic and cancer-related pain, founding the Center for the Relief of Pain. Dr. Rosenberg is actively involved in treating patients in pain with such modalities as intrathecal pharmacotherapy, peripheral nerve, spinal cord and deep brain stimulation and neuroablation such as cordotomy and myelotomy.

SCott BJerke, Md, FaCS, ContriButeS to EssEntials of GEnEral surGEry
Lippincott Williams & Wilkins released the 5th Edition of Essentials of General Surgery. Scott Bjerke, MD, FACS, trauma program medical director at Research Medical Center, co-authored the trauma chapter in the new book. Dr. Bjerke also presented at the 2012 Trauma Trends Conference in St. Joseph, MO.

Canteen vending oFFerS new Food ServiCe at reSearCh BrookSide CaMPuS
Canteen Vending unveiled its new self-service vending concept called “Avenue C” at the 6675 Holmes building. Avenue C is an open air vending concept that offers employees a selection of sandwiches, salads, soups, snacks and beverages. The area is completely self-serve with the help of an automated touch screen kiosk that accepts cash and card. It’s located on the ground level (2nd floor) of the 6675 Holmes building in what was formerly a radiology break room.

The 4th Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Provider and Refresher class was held at Research Medical Center October 6-7. Trauma surgeons Robert Troiani, MD, Earl Scott, MD, Heather Klepacz, MD, John Webb, MD and Scott Bjerke, MD participated as instructors. Janet Bjerke RN, BSN, MBA, organized and conducted the course for nine physicians and residents. ATLS is a basic trauma course for non-trauma physicians created by the American College of Surgeons to improve trauma care in non-trauma centers and sets the national and international standards for safe, efficient trauma care both in trauma centers and non-trauma centers across the United States and the world.

Joel MCkinSey, Md, Featured on Fox-4 newS
FOX-4 health reporter Meryl Lin McKean interviewed Joel McKinsey, MD, infectious disease specialist at Research Medical Center. Dr. McKinsey discussed the results of a recent study presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress. The study found that the influenza vaccine could be an important treatment for maintaining heart health and warding off strokes and heart attacks. The flu shot may reduce risk of a major cardiac event by 50 percent and cardiac deaths by 40 percent.

Stephanie Graff, MD, oncologist and breast cancer specialist at Research Medical Center, was a featured guest on the KSHB-41 NBC Action News midday show. She discussed several breast cancer myths and stressed the importance of screening mammograms.

Jennifer Parreira, RN, MSN, FNP-BC, was recently featured as Nurse of the Week in The Kansas City Nursing News. Nancy DeBasio, PhD, RN, president and dean of Research College of Nursing, was also featured for her recent selection into the 2012 Class of Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing. Selection for membership in the Academy is one of the most prestigious honors in the field of nursing and includes only 1,800 nurse leaders in education, management, practice, policy and research nationwide.

Research Medical Center Receives National Award for Organ Donation Rate
The Department of Health and Human Services presented awards to 18 Kansas and Missouri hospitals for its success in increasing the number of organs available for transplantation, including Research Medical Center receiving the Silver award. Hospital executives, together with Midwest Transplant Network (MTN), received the Department’s Medal of Honor for Organ Donation for achieving and sustaining national goals for donation, including a donation rate of 75 percent or more of eligible donors at their facilities. They were recognized at the 7th National Learning Congress for the Donation and Transplantation Community of Practice held Oct. 4-5 in Grapevine, TX. “Our success is greatly influenced by the success of our hospital partners,” said Jan Finn, MTN chief operations officer. “We would like to congratulate Research Medical Center and thank them for its support of our mission to save lives.”

Research Psychiatric Center Receives 2012 Missouri Quality Award
Research Psychiatric Center—part of HCA Midwest Health System, Kansas City’s largest healthcare network and privatesector employer—is a recipient of the 2012 Missouri Quality Award (MQA). The MQA is the official state recognition for excellence in quality leadership; the annual awards are given by the Excellence in Missouri Foundation. The MQA is modeled after the prestigious Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award and is recognized as one of the strongest state-level quality award programs in the country. Research Psychiatric Center is the only Kansas City-area healthcare facility to receive one of the two statewide 2012 Missouri Quality Awards and the only freestanding behavioral health facility to ever win the MQA. It is through our Shared Governance Councils that nurses are able to make decisions that directly influence their work environment and patient care. Shared Governance at Research Medical Center includes the following councils:

Practice council • Meets monthly on the second Tuesday at
7:30 a.m. in Meeting Room 1. Led by co-chairs Christina Quick and Gail Mayer, the Council addresses professional nursing practices, policies and hospital processes.

nurse Quality Peer review council • Meets monthly on the first Friday at 7:30 a.m. in the Maternal Child classroom. The co-chairs are Leah Coons and Cassie Morrison. The Council reviews nursing cases using the Just Culture algorithm, makes recommendations and disseminate lessons learned. If interested in joining, please contact one of the co-chairs. survey readiness council • Meets the last Wednesday of every other month at 8 a.m. in Meeting Room 3&4. Led by chair Lynnette Hayes, the Council reviews survey requirements and determines how to keep Research Medical Center surveyready. Professional develoPment and education council • Meets monthly on the second Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. in the Auxiliary Room. Led by chair Gina Taylor and co-chair Julia Payne, this Council provides educational opportunities for professional development, including the annual Healthcare Career Education Fair. Membership is designed for two nurses per unit/department. Staff are invited to visit Councils that interest them (except Peer Review). If you are interested in representing your unit and joining a Council, contact your manager or the Council chairs.
Note: A Shared Governance breakfast will take place in lieu of a December meeting for all Councils. The November Research Council meeting will be moved to the first Wednesday of December.

retention council • Meets monthly on the third Wednesday at 8 a.m. in the 3 North classroom. Led by chair Becky Wright and co-chair Sirena Howrey, this council reviews retention rates and celebrates the excellent nursing staff at Research Medical Center through awards and recognition.

Council Highlights
Practice council
The Council is currently looking for ideas on how to reduce medication interruption to implement at Research Medical Center. Carolyn Gasser, Quality & Patient Safety department, submitted four new or revised policies to the Council: Construction; Interim Life Safety and Infection Control; Management and Control of Bedbugs in Healthcare Settings; and TB Control Plan, and Exposure Control Plan. Policies will no longer contain detailed procedure information so staff should refer to Lippincott’s Nursing Procedure Manual. Policies that were deleted due to this include: Bowel Management, Incisional Pain Pump, Parenteral Nutrition Management, Traction Management and Chest Tube Management. outPatient Practice council
The Outpatient Practice Council is in full swing. Current areas of focus include improving patient satisfaction scores, AIDET standardization, survey readiness, developing clinical competencies, supply needs and documentation. Several Ad Hoc members will be invited to the council meetings to help improve and or change processes to have a better outcome for staff.

The Research Council is looking to recruit new members who want to be involved with the Council and develop a study in their area of practice in order to find evidence to potentially improve care, reducing healthcare costs and improving patient/nurse satisfaction. A skin care study being conducted on 4 West by Pat Conley, MSN RN has 61 patients enrolled. The Research Council is also fortunate to have a partnership with the Center for Nursing Research and Innovation (CNRI). Rebecca Saxton is the chair and Julie Nauser serves as the co-chair. The CNRI assists nurses in conducting research and guides them through the entire process of developing the idea, designing a study, data collection and disseminating results. Completed studies from the CNRI include: An Abbreviated 7-Item NIH Stroke Scale, Heart Failure Family Caregivers, Medication Administration Interruption and Nurse Manager Workload Perception. Ongoing studies include: The Effect of Nurse-Physician Relationships, Effectiveness of an Absorbent Foam Dressing in Prevention of Sacral Pressure Ulcers in the ICU, Patients’ Perception of Nursing Attire, and the Nurse Residency Program.

Adopt-A-Family
The holiday season is fast approaching. Our economy is stable but fragile and hopefully our 401Ks have grown and “matured” (at least some). Without your help, many of our Research Medical Center co-workers and their families will experience a very meager holiday season this year. We are appealing to your “heart” as much as your pocketbook when we ask for your help. Your generosity and bountiful spirit made it possible for many Research Medical Center families to enjoy and celebrate holidays past. Last year over 28 Research Medical Center families benefited from the collective generosity of 23 hospital departments and physician partners. Many thanks! We are now planning Research Medical Center’s Adopt-A-Family program for 2012. If you and those in your department are interested in helping our Research Medical Center families, including those who work at the Research Brookside Campus, contact your supervisor, department director, your unit chaplain, or the Pastoral Care department at 276-4120. All interested departments and individuals, please respond by November 16. This will allow ample time to collect gifts and food. Distribution will be Wednesday, Dec. 19 at the main campus. If you are a Research Medical Center employee who would like to be considered for adoption, you may pick-up a nomination form in the Pastoral Care office, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nomination forms need to be completed and returned to the Pastoral Care department by November 16. All family adoptions are managed confidentially.

Dorothy Partin Honored With Third Quarter P.E.E.R. Award
Dorothy Partin, RN, (Cardiology Cath Lab) was recently honored with the first quarter Professional Exemplifying Excellence at Research (P.E.E.R.) award. The P.E.E.R. Recognition Program was designed by the Nursing Councils to identify and honor superior nurses at Research Medical Center who exemplify clinical excellence. This honor includes a monetary award for continuing education in nursing at Research Medical Center. This award is presented to one nurse each quarter. In addition to Partin, other nominees included Leah Coons (5 East), Marquita McAdams (4 North) and Brandi Samson (4 East). New Policy Changes to ECHO Employee Assistance Fund
The Employees Contributing to Help Others (ECHO) Team and The Research Foundation recently announced new policy changes to its Employee Assistance Fund. This fund, made possible by Research Medical Center employees who contribute as members of ECHO, will now make up to $2,000 available to Research employees in need of financial help. Eligibility for this fund include enduring a serious illness, natural disaster, disability or handicap as a result of an accident or natural disaster, domestic violence and homelessness. However, funds cannot be used for routine expenses such as house or car repairs, reduced hours at work or spouse losing their job, funeral expenses, divorce, bankruptcy, home foreclosure, eviction notice or child support. Additionally, Research Medical Center employees in need can now apply for funds once every three years if needed. Prior to the policy change, employees were only eligible to receive monetary funds once during their employment. To inquire about receiving monetary aide from the Employee Assistance Fund, please contact the Pastoral Care department at 816-276-4120 for a confidential interview.

Perioperative Nurse Week
November 5-11
In 1979, the AORN House of Delegates approved a resolution that AORN designate a day each year to promote consumer education and enhance public knowledge regarding the role of the perioperative nurse. November 14 was designated as OR Nurse Day, and a few years later, the observation was expanded to a full week. Since 1979 individual members, AORN chapters, hospitals and other medical facilities have organized special events and utilized other forms of publicity to help educate the public about the diverse roles performed by perioperative registered nurses. In 2000, OR Nurse Week was changed to Perioperative Nurse Week to more accurately reflect the broad spectrum of patient care services provided to surgical patients by perioperative nurses.

Quarterly Patient satisfaction Winners
Congratulations to the inpatient Neuro/Ortho/Trauma unit and the outpatient PT/OT department for receiving the quarterly patient satisfaction award. “The award is a testament to the hard-working and dedicated staff of the Neuro/Ortho/Trauma department. The staffs’ attention to individualized quality care shines on a daily basis as a result of the cohesive environment led by clinical managers Mary Kramer and Becky Wright. The entire team is worthy of this award’s distinction,” said Dain Sisk, director, Neuro/Ortho/Trauma department. In addition to his department’s staff excellence, Rob Schlicht has recognized one of its support departments as part of their award. “Our scores are affected by the hard work the EVS staff on the Research Brookside Campus provide to keep our areas looking good. The EVS staff have been friendly and helpful in working with rehab service to improve our outpatient satisfaction scores,” said Rob Schlicht, administrative director, rehabilitation services/neurophysiology clinic.

2012 Volker Awards
Each year the Research family dedicates a day to its greatest benefactor, William Volker. Mr. Volker was born on April 1, 1859 in Hanover, Germany. He immigrated to the United States when he was 12 and settled in Chicago, where he worked for a picture frame manufacturer. At age 20, he became manager of the business, and in 1882, he moved the company to Kansas City. Mr. Volker gave much of his time, energy and money to the Kansas City community, particularly educational institutions and service organizations. As Research Medical Center’s major benefactor, Mr. Volker is honored on this day, along with those employees who have demonstrated loyalty to the Research family of healthcare organizations.

Meet Our service Champions
In 2010, the Nursing Retention and Employee Advisory councils responded to the employee engagement survey of employees wanting to have another way identified besides the CARES cards to recognize those individuals who have done an excellent job of displaying the CAREs behavior. The Retention Council developed: “Show Us How RMC Cares.” In response to this recommendation, the Council developed the Service Champions Award. There is always someone in the facility who everyone knows to be kind, compassionate and willing to do anything for the patients, co-workers or physicians. We have many, but wanted to honor a few on an annual basis who have received numerous cards from all of these sources mentioned above. The senior leadership team wanted to take a few moments to recognize and thank them for a job well done by having an annual luncheon. Each individual will receive a Service Champion pin and a token of appreciation. Those recognized on Oct. 17 (for 2011) were identified as follows: Helen Austin (CAPPS), Kristen Lockard (Neuro/Ortho), Lisa Jones (CAPPS), Joe Vlasak (Diagnostic Radiology), Kara Sims (Surgery), Wes Penny (ICU), Patricia Tapang (3 North), Karen Wagner (CAPPS), Archelle Blount (CAPPS), Theresa Glick (Cath Lab) and Keith Trammel (Radiology). Women’s services update
• The Women’s Services department has purchased a new hearing screener. The screener is used to provide the required hearing testing on all newborns prior to discharge. This applies to all of our babies, including our NICU babies. The new equipment replaces one that went into forced retirement. New NICU infant scales will replace older equipment that had limited accuracy when weighing low birth weight infants. The new scales provide better weight accuracy for our smallest patients.

This new equipment will allow our staff to provide safe and reliable measurement and screening of our infants. As an aside, the NICU received our long-awaited new neonatal transport crib which is used to transport our NICU infants from Delivery Room to NICU, from NICU to Radiology and other procedural areas. This significantly improves the safety and quality of care for our infants requiring such transport.

Echo lab Attains Accreditation
Kudos to the Echo Lab Team for their outstanding accomplishment attaining Echo Lab Accreditation through the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission! This accreditation recognized excellence in technical skill and expertise, physician commitment and organizational structure. The lab was granted accreditation in the following three areas: • • • Transthoracic echocardiography Transesophageal echocardiography Stress echocardiography

Great American smokeout
Please join Research Medical Center and the American Cancer Society in the Great American Smoke out on November 15. Let’s move from awareness to action. Tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States. Smoking accounts for 443,000 premature deaths and 49,400 nonsmokers die as a result of exposure to secondhand smoke. Quitting smoking is one of the most important steps you can take to help create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
