With great sadness, the family of Chris
Garrett announces the passing of our beloved
wife, mother, grandma and great-grand-
ma who lef us Friday, May 23, 2014 afer a
lengthy illness.
Chris leaves behind her husband Lorne
Garrett; son Larry (Sue) and daughter Elaine;
grandchildren Darcy, Corey, Nicholas, and
Kaitlin; and great-grandson Wyatt. She is sur-
vived also by her sisters Del Frederick (Ed),
Tammy Moore (Howard), and brothers Ron
Graham (Heather) and Ed Coupland (Jane)
and many nieces and nephews, as well as a
large extended family. She was pre-deceased
by her brother Wayne Edlund.
Chris was born in Calgary in 1942 and
spent her childhood in the Golden area. Afer
her marriage in 1960, she and Lorne moved to
the Trail area where they raised their children,
spent their working lives and then semi-re-
tired to Christina Lake.
Until her illness restricted her activities,
Chris was involved with the Heart and Stroke
Foundation, the Kidney Foundation, BEAKS
and the SPCA. She enjoyed her gardening,
taking in strays ( dogs, cats, turkeys, peacocks,
a chipmunk and even a lizard ) and spending
time with family and friends.
Memorial will be held on Saturday July 19,
2014 at 1:00 pm at the house at 1589 Neimi
Road, Christina Lake.
In lieu of fowers, donations in Chris’s
memory can be made to BC SPCA.

We probably all know the stories of di-
vorcing couples at each other’s throats in
court, fghting to the bitter end, sometimes
even using their kids for leverage. Tat’s
awful for the adults, worse for the children.
One aim of our novel family law is to
avoid such ugly court fghts where pos-
sible. BC’s Family Law Act (which came
into efect on March 18, 2013) aims to
steer couples toward solving their post-
break-up issues – such as parenting ar-
rangements, fnancial support obligations,
dividing property and debts – in less de-
structive ways.
Te new law encourages using “alterna-
tive dispute resolution” (ADR) methods.
You and your ex may never have to go to
court – and save yourselves money and
grief to boot. Typically, you and your ex
split the cost of the mediator.
One favoured ADR process is media-
tion. Tis involves engaging a certifed
mediator to help you and your ex sort out
your issues.
In a mediation, unlike court or arbitra-
tion (another ADR method), solutions
aren’t imposed from on high – ultimately
you and your ex must decide and agree on
solutions for the mediation to succeed. So
mediation is essentially a negotiation, with
a seasoned professional there to assist. De-
cisions are reached only by agreement, and
cannot be dictated by the mediator.
In contrast to the “take no prisoners” ap-
proach of a court battle, the less adversarial
mediation process fosters better ongoing
relationships during and afer the break-
up. Tat’s a big beneft. Particularly where
you have kids, it’s important for you and
your ex to stay on speaking terms. You’ll
both be involved in your children’s lives
(and so with each other) for many years
to come, and it’s important for the kids’
well-being to see their parents being civil
to each other.
Another beneft of mediation is that,
because you and your ex have “bought in”
to the solutions you agree on, they tend to
stick (rather than stick in your throats).
Surprisingly, mediations very ofen suc-
ceed even if you and your ex seem miles
apart at the start. Of course, neither of you
will get everything you want, but chances
are it’s the best way for you to each get
many of the things most important to you
individually.
Tat’s because the mediator talks to each
of you privately up front to try to fush out
key points of concern and what’s most crit-
ical to each of you. Tis allows the media-
tor, using some tools, skill and experience,
to nudge you both in the right direction
and, with some give and take by both sides,
help engineer an acceptable result.
If successful, you’ll come away with
more custom-tailored solutions than a dic-
tated result would achieve.
If you agree to mediate, you both settle
on a mediator. Te mediator in a fam-
ily law dispute, ofen a lawyer, is a profes-
sional with extensive training in mediation
(required to be accredited as a mediator).

Argenta Community Microscope
Ready For New Users!
Sarah Ross and Shannon Isaac have spent the last year
collaborating, purchasing materials and organizing a
space for the community microscope to be housed at the
Argenta Hall in the school room located in the basement
of the hall. With funding from the Community Fund of
North Kootenay Lake, many community members who
ofered letters of support and with the skilled labour of
volunteers, the microscope is available to residents living
at the North end of Kootenay Lake.
All parties interested in using the microscope are in-
vited to participate in the upcoming workshop ‘How to
Access and Safeguard the Community Microscope’.
We will be ofering a workshop on Saturday, June 21 at
1:30 to 3:30 pm. Tis workshop will be a hands-on learn-

iety of drawing and acrylic painting materials which can
be mixed and mashed to create a number of unconven-
tional and interesting efects. Using this variety of materi-
als, students will explore their creativity and work to fnd
their own unique expression while examining and cele-
brating the tradition of Mandalas.
Ted Wallace has been a practicing artist for well over
twenty years. As a teacher he inspires creativity in his
