Vino And Forte At Ravencourt
Friday, July 4 is the date for the next concert happening
at the Ravencourt B&B in Upper Passmore. On that day,
beginning at 7 pm the Vancouver-based duo Vino and
Forte will be playing in the inner courtyard of this amaz-
ing two story straw-bale home.
Imagine Cuban musical rhythms fused with famen-
co vocals, blended with classical melodies and you get a
sense of where this evening will lead. Tis duo consists of
classically trained pianist Oriano White and Balkan-fa-
menco guitarist Ivan Tucakov. Skilled in their own felds,
they have taken on the challenge of merging their back-
grounds to produce a unique musical experience.

Selkirk College Helping Provide Forest
Industry Building Blocks
Selkirk College is joining the Community Forest Societies
in Kaslo and Nakusp in helping foster solutions to pressing
training needs in the region’s forest industry by partnering
with stakeholders who have identifed gaps.
At the end of May, logging contractors from many West
Kootenay communities met in New Denver with Selkirk
College Community Education & Workplace Training staf,
community forest managers and a BC Community Forest
Association representative. Stakeholders such as logging con-
tractors, Interior Lumber Manufacturers Association, and
the Interior Logging Association are all interested in flling
labour gaps with specialized training. Te meeting was the re-
sult of next steps identifed at two community forest Forums
that were held in Nakusp and Kaslo earlier in the spring.
Te loggers identifed a number of key elements to a suc-
cessful training program. Tey want to see a greater connec-
tion to the high schools, a “real world” look at the forestry
industry, a laddered training program and keen participants.
“Te economic downturn in the industry resulted in a break
in the historical succession planning cycle, where owner/
operators of logging operations would generally train their
children to take over the business,” says Nakusp and Area
Community Forest Manager Hugh Watt. “Te training was
hands-on and could take years to develop the necessary ex-
pertise in the feld. Now, a new cycle needs to be created and
logging contractors are keen to be part of the development
process.” Te process now becomes one of external recruit-
ment, rather than internal recruitment. In other words, the
owner/operators want to hire people, train them and eventu-
ally have them take over the business. Tis is a big opportun-
ity for youth in our area and a plan is being developed to share
information with high schools. Contractors spoke about the
need for real world situations to provide participants with ex-
perience of working outdoors in all its natural ruggedness,
working physically and mentally, and learning a broad range
of skills from power saw operation to tree identifcation. Afer
this work experience phase, participants would have a better
understanding of the industry rigors and their adaptability,
endurance and inclination for the job. Te contractors en-
dorsed the idea of a laddered training program that would
allow participants to begin at basic entry level safety train-
ing to increase their employability. Te next step would be
a second set of training modules, identifed by the loggers.
Using this style of training program would provide fexibility
by ofering training streams such as moving from entry level
work to choker work, then on to specialized areas, such as
chaser, bucker, hook tender, and equipment operator, within
a logging operation.
“Te group of loggers was clear on the need for keen and
committed participants in the training program,” says Gregg
Neelin of Selkirk College. “Everyone agreed that the skills and
expertise can be taught, but there are key components that
a new employee brings to the workplace. Te employers are
always looking for these important elements in a new recruit.
Tey want someone who is keen and motivated, interested
in learning—for instance practicing on a piece of equipment
during lunch break—able to work through discomfort, and a
good ft to the crew.” Selkirk College will now get to work on
the next steps in the process.
“We received some valuable information from the logging
contractors, including the identifcation of potentially 40 new
well-paying jobs
in the West Koo-
tenay region,” says
Kaslo and Area
Community For-
est Manager Bill
Kestell. “We will
continue work-
ing with industry
stakeholders to
develop a training
program that meets
the needs of the
logging industry
and that delivers
economic benefts
and job creation to
the local commun-
ities.”

Te name Vino and Forte was chosen for its dual inter-
pretation. Forte is an Italian musical symbol for ‘strength’
and in French refects one’s particular skill. Vino was
chosen because the duo is delighted to feature local wines
at their performances, which the hosts of Ravencourt are
planning to ofer. To learn more about the duo, visit the
website at www.vinoandforte.com
As these concerts are becoming more popular, it’s rec-
ommended to come earlier and enjoy the ambience of
Ravencourt before the music begins. Admission for these
concerts is by donations with all proceeds going to the
performers.
Ravencourt B&B is located at 4615 Upper Passmore
Rd. (www.ravencourtbandb.com). Turn of Highway 6 at
Passmore, cross the bridge and follow the signs to pure
musical enjoyment. Refreshments will be available. For

Schools Out-What To Do
For Summer
Once again, it’s the start of summer break from school
and the kids are bored and need something to do. Camp
Tweedsmuir in Fruitvale has been ofering a Summer
Camp program for the past three years. Te property is
right in Fruitvale and ofers a large mess hall, washrooms
complete with showers, and cabins to sleep in. Te camp
program is open to all youth ranging in age from 9-14,
both boys and girls, Scouting and non-Scouting.
Last year we expanded our program and ofered two
separate 5-day camps and had a total of 46 participants.
We have a staf of college students with a co-ordinator,
who travel around the Okanagan and here, putting on
these camps all summer long.
Te participants last year had a blast as they were kept
busy with games, crafs, outdoor skills, shelter building,
archery, horizontal climbing wall, campfres, a hike or two,
and of course the day at Champion Lakes with swimming
and canoeing. A new activity last year was the fun time
of staying in a teepee for a night and an astronomy ses-
sion and star gazing, put on by a local member of the West
Kootenay Astronomy club.
We had participant campers from Cranbrook, Invermere,
Nelson, Grand Forks, Trail, Rossland, Fruitvale, Castlegar
and Salmo. Everyone had a great time and we ended Turs-
day with a feast and formal campfre. Friday morning was
a sad day as we all had to pack up and say our goodbyes.
Closing ceremony was time to refect over the week and the
surprise was the prizes for all youth and staf, supplied by
the local Baden Powell Guild as a little reminder of the fun
time all had at camp. T-shirt signing was the fnal activity
as the campers awaited pick up by their parents, with prom-
ises of meeting at camp again next year. Already a number
of these kids have signed up for this year’s fun times.
Tis year’s dates are July 20-25 and July 27-August 1. If
this sounds like it may pique some interest in your kids,
please call Heather Hamer at 250-367-7453, or visit the
website at www.AdventureCamps.ca
Nelson Skate Park Celebrates
Skateboard Ambassador, Matt LeBlanc, (NDYC’s sum-
mer staf) will be in attendance at various times at Nelson’s
newly minted skatepark from now throughout the sum-
mer break. Matt will also be running skate camps starting
July 7 for 2-4 weeks operated through the NDCC. See the
Leisure guide for details.
As with all new ventures, teething troubles arise when
new users are unaware of established protocols. As part of
his role, Matt will aim to help implement the ground rules
for everyone’s safety and enjoyment. In the meantime,
below are some general skatepark guidelines for users of
the park and their parents or guardians:
Wait your turn and watch out for others. Everyone needs
to be aware of his or her surroundings at all times to avoid
collisions. Tis includes watching what others are doing
and how they are riding the obstacles.
All obstacles at the park are intended for riding. Te
ledges and the fat bottom areas are part of the riding sur-
faces and not meant as sitting /standing/watching areas.
All obstacles were meant to be used a certain way so be
aware and learn the appropriate lines.
Follow the fow of traf c. Skateparks tend to fow in a cer-
tain direction. Riding against the fow is dangerous and may
cause collisions with those using the park properly. If you’re
unsure of the pattern or fow, sit back and watch how others
are using the park or ask a local. Cutting across the park can
also be risky, go around the perimeter or wait for an appro-
priate time to cross, the fow of traf c has the right of way.
Avoid marathon runs. An occasional long run is accept-
able but otherwise be considerate of other users. Watch
what other riders are doing and make sure your turn is
around the same length as theirs.
Adult/parent supervision is advisable. Just like at any
other recreational centre, an adult should accompany
young kids at all times, especially those who are beginners
and/or new to the skatepark.
Ride at your own risk. Te skatepark is a fun place, but there
is a risk of injury. Te activities at the park involve high speed
movements on hard surfaces and there are several risks as-
sociated with this due to the potential of falls and collisions.

Elephant Mountain Literary Festival
In Nelson
CBC national book show host Eleanor Wachtel, 2011
Canada Reads fnalist Angie Abdou, long-time McClelland
& Stewart publisher Douglas Gibson, and nonfction auth-
or and singer/songwriter Sid Marty, winner of the Grand
Prize at the Banf Festival of Mountain Books and of Al-
berta’s Grant MacEwan Literary Arts lifetime achievement
award, are among the presenters at Nelson, BC’s third an-
nual Elephant Mountain Literary Festival, July 10 to 13.
Te 2014 Elephant Mountain Literary Festival lineup
was announced Wednesday, May 7, by Festival director
Lynn Krauss. First Nations authors and a publisher, crime
fction novelists, a famed Nova Scotia novelist and chil-
dren’s author, Edmonton’s poet laureate, local writers,
a youth storytelling workshop and a Vancouver Island
printer specializing in self-published books round out this
year’s event.
“Our aim each year is to bring a diverse group of authors
and publishers to Nelson, as well as to showcase area talent,
in order to demonstrate the continuing vitality of Canadian
writing,” said Krauss. “Tat’s why we’re naming our theme
this year Intersections: a chance to appreciate what happens
when diferent literary geographies and perspectives meet.
Festival-goers are in for a wonderful time when they take
in such a broad spectrum of achievement.”
Most festival events take place this year at Hart Hall (the
former Anglican Church hall), except for a session featuring
Wachtel and mystery writer Gail Bowen, which will be held
at the Capitol Teatre. As well, Gibson’s one-man show about
his adventures publishing such authors as Nobel laureate
Alice Munro, Peter Gzowski, W.O. Mitchell and Mavis Gal-
lant will take place in the refurbished Civic Teatre.
Also part of the 2014 festival will be Secwepemc First
Nation author Garry Gottfriedson, author and publisher
Kateri-Akiwenzie-Damm of the Nawash First Nation, Nel-
son’s own mystery writer Deryn Collier, Commonwealth
Writers’ Prize nominee Donna Morrissey of Halifax, and
Edmonton spoken word artist and poet laureate Mary
Pinkoski, winner of the national CBC Poetry Face-of.
Other presenters include book printer Craig Shemilt of
Victoria’s Printorium Bookworks.
Besides readings and talks by invited guests, the festival
includes an opening gala July 10 featuring oferings from
the Nelson Brewing Company and BC Wine Guys. A fes-
tival Gold Pass – admission to all festival sessions, includ-
ing those at the Capitol and Civic theatres is $100. Prices
for individual sessions, information on how to register for
the youth storytelling workshop, as well as other details
including how to purchase tickets, are available on the fes-
tival website, www.emlfestival.com
And Te Winner Is? Junior Dragons’
Den Show A Big Success!
Afer months of preparation the Junior Dragons’ Den
show launched with a live competition June 6 at the
Charles Bailey Teatre in Trail, and what a show it was!
Modeled afer CBC’s Te Dragons’ Den, where qualifying
entrepreneurs pitch their business idea to a group of po-
tential investors, Junior Dragons’ Den, the West Kootenay
wide business contest for youth entrepreneurs, proved to
be equally entertaining.
Te doors opened at 6:30 pm at Trail’s landmark enter-
tainment venue, admission was free and six fnalists com-
peted for over $9000 in cash prizes as they pitched their
business ideas to a panel of West Kootenay Dragons in
front of a live audience.
Spearheaded by Community Futures, students in Grades
8-12 from throughout the West Kootenay-Boundary re-
gion were invited to submit a business concept paper and
a brief 1.5-2 minute video elevator pitch, explaining their
business idea. Submissions were then evaluated based
upon fnances, marketability, the product or service and
the overall plan presented.
“We were very impressed with the level of detail, busi-
ness plans and presentations by all of the Junior Dragons,”
stated Don Freschi, GM of CFDC Greater Trail. “Tere
were some very talented individuals and teams that pre-
sented a number of business ideas ranging from patent
pending fshing fashers, to all organic skin care products
and even turbines which are designed to generate electri-
city through being placed in the waste water pipes of com-
mercial buildings”, stated Freschi.
And the winners were:
Junior Category (Grade 8-10)
- Fresh Skin Care Products, Kyla Kooiman, Grade 8,
Stanley Humphries
Senior Category (Grade 11-12)
- Ebon Supply Co, Tim Baldwin and Jordan Strobel,
Grade 11. J.L. Crowe
- Eric Gonzales, Eric Gonzales Video, Grade 12 J.L.
Crowe
- Gravity Power, Maddie and Sierra Morehouse. Grade
10 & 12, Stanley Humphries Secondary
Te prize money awarded to the successful candidates
must be used to expand an existing business or launch a
new business, or may go toward tuition for post secondary
education. Plans are already in the works for 2015 with the
goal of taking the competition throughout the Columbia
Basin and adding a 21 and over entry category for existing
Basin businesses!

Puppet master, Simone Varey, (right) describes her con-
cept for the puppetry in Jorinda with the opera’s creative
team, (lef to right) producer, Marty Horswill, stage director,
Geof Burns and composer and musical director, Doug Ja-
mieson (standing).
Nelson To Mount Its Second Operatic
World Premiere
Just three years afer the premiere of its hugely successful
commissioned opera, KHAOS, the Amy Ferguson Insti-
tute has announced it will now mount a second operatic
world premiere by yet another Nelson-based composer.
“Tis opportunity to mount another new opera came
as a complete surprise,” said AFI president, Dianna Ducs.
“We weren’t even aware that another composer of opera
lived in Nelson when Doug Jamieson approached us with
the ofer of his new work, Jorinda. Our production com-
mittee met with him earlier this year, studied the opera
and were rapidly won over by the concept Doug proposed.
Recently the AFI Board of Directors enthusiastically ap-
proved the committee’s recommendation that our produc-
tion company, Nelson Community Opera, mount Jorinda
in November 2015.”
Jorinda has been a long‐term project for Jamieson. Te
genesis of the work goes back to the 1980s when he wrote
a story outline adapted from one of the Brothers Grimm
fairy tales that he read to his children. He kept the story in
mind, hoping to use it someday as the basis of a musical
theatre work.
“We were especially captivated by Jamieson’s novel ap-
proach to presenting his opera, said Marty Horswill, pro-
ducer. “From the outset his vision for this work was to
tell the story through the use of puppetry rather than the
traditional operatic form. Tis approach works for Nelson
Community Opera because, along with Nelson’s many
other talented performers and designers, the community
also has its own highly skilled puppeteer, Simone Varey,
who has agreed to join our production team as the puppet
master. In addition to building the puppets required for
the show, Simone will also train the corps of puppeteers,
each of whom will animate a large puppet character.”
For further information contact Marty Horswill, pro-
ducer,[email protected], 250-352-2595 or visit www.

What Every Child Should Do
Before Te Age Of 12
Rejoice! Te frst day of summer – and the longest day of
the year – is almost here, and afer a long, dark Canadian
winter, it deserves a warm welcome. So, on June 21, Par-
ticipACTION encourages families to clear their schedules,
get outside and play on the Longest Day of Play. With only
seven per cent of kids aged fve to 11 meeting the Canadian
Physical Activity Guidelines, a fnding from this year’s Ac-
tive Healthy Kids Canada Report Card, ParticipACTION
is encouraging families to bring more spontaneous, un-
structured activity into their lives. Te ParticipACTION
Play List includes 24 things every Canadian child should
do before the age of 12:
Experience total weightlessness at the top of a swing
Skip stones across water
Play leap frog
Hang upside down from a tree limb
Jump into water cold enough that it almost takes their
breath away
Trow rocks or snowballs at a post from a distance until
they get a bulls eye
Ride a bike with no hands
Paddle a canoe
Piggyback someone
Roll down a big hill
Try a sport that requires a helmet
Collect something in a forest
Make up a dance routine
Slide down something on a piece of cardboard
Build a fort
Hike somewhere for a picnic
Bury someone they love in the sand
Play outside in the rain
Jump in a pile of leaves
Make a snow angel
Fly a kite
Create an obstacle course
Swim in a lake or an ocean
Make up a game involving a ball
Supporting and encouraging opportunities for active,
unstructured play, especially outdoors, may be one of the
most promising, accessible and cost-efective solutions
to increasing child and youth physical activity in Can-
ada. Active play ofers cognitive, emotional and social
development benefts. It has also been shown to improve
and foster motor function, creativity, decision-making and
problem-solving skills, the ability to control emotions and
social skills such as taking turns and helping others.

SALMO CANADA DAY CELEBRATION

Salmo
Canada
Days
Salmo Canada Day
Canada Day in Salmo is always a wonderful celebration. The
whole town comes out to party! Salmo boasts one of the best Can-
ada Days outside of Ottawa. This year the annual parade, children’s
races, fireworks and Show and Shine will take place on Tuesday,
July 1st. The annual slo-pitch tournament begins Friday evening
with play continuing throughout the weekend. Many more events
are scheduled as well. For more information contact the Salmo &
District Chamber of Commerce at 250-357-2596 or check out the
Community Events Bulletin Board outside the Canada post office
on Main Street.
Flagstone Murals
Salmo is home to many stone murals celebrating the history and
natural beauty of the area. Take a walking tour around the village
and visit these unique murals erected by the students from the local
Kootenay Stone Training Institute. One mural is located on the side
of the Salmo Museum on Highway 6, a grand mural is on the wall
of the Salmo Hotel. Falkins Insurance and The Salmo Arcade and
Coffee Shop (SACS) buildings on 4th Street boast murals as well.
The first mural to be completed is on Highway 6 at the Whiteline
Cafe. For more information on the flagstone murals, visit www.
salmovillage.ca/news/stonemurals.htm.
Salmo Valley Farmers Market
It’s that time again! The Salmo Valley Farmers Market is ready to
tempt you. Local food, crafts, artisan wares and of course, anything
and everything for your garden. The Salmo Valley Farmers’ Market
will start June 26, and takes place every Thursday from 4 pm - 7 pm.
Come enjoy the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the market. For
info, call 250-357-0032.
Erie Lake
The locals have a deep love for this very special place. It is a
small calm lake, and on a spring evening, a wonderful spot to catch
sight of local waterfowl, and best of all, the painted turtles that call
this place home. Rich in wildlife and plant life, an ecosystem that
feels complete within itself, Erie Lake is a perfect spot to fish for
largemouth bass, smallmouth bass or trout. Ask the locals about their
fishing holes. Erie Lake is located just 6 kilometres west of Salmo.

Ebony to feed or clean the kennel. Now both Ebony and Tara,

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
June 15 was declared World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
by the United Nations on December 19, 2011. Te Nelson
and Area Elder Abuse Prevention Program (EAPP) and
the local Community Response Networks are hosting in-
formation displays at Riondel at the new Artisan’s Market
in the month of June, and the Kootenay Savings and Cred-
it Union (at the Valley junction) June 24-27.
Elder abuse is a worldwide, ofen hidden, and growing
problem. Ageism, disempowerment of elderly people, a
sense of entitlement by the abusers, and fear or shame by
the elder are all contributors to this form of abuse. Elder
abuse can be fnancial, verbal, psychological, physical,
or sexual. It can be perpetrated by a stranger but is more
ofen someone whom the elder knows and trusts ( an old
or new “friend” or a family member).
Te goal of WEAADay is to raise awareness about elder
abuse, decrease the stigma surrounding abuse, encourage
elders to be aware of their rights and advance planning
options, and to create more dialogue within communities.
If you want more information or have a concern about
an elder please attend one of the information displays or
contact the Nelson EAPP at 250-352-6008.

Hello world, my name is Oreo. I’m a sweet,
lovable boy who would be a wonderful friend
to anyone. I love to lie upside down and I make
the shelter staff laugh with what they say are
my crazy antics. Hey, I just love to be loved and
I show it, so I don’t mind if they call me crazy! I
get along well with other cats but am still not
sure about dogs, I haven’t been around them
much. You can visit me at the Nelson SPCA or

Got Bats?
Want to learn more about the unique world of bats?
Do you want free mosquito control? Whether you want
to promote bats in your garden or need advice to safely
evict them from a building, the Kootenay Community Bat
Project can help.
Te KCBP provides educational programs on bats,
works with landowners who have bats in buildings and
promote the annual bat count to monitor bat populations.
Funded by the Columbia Basin Trust, the KCBP seeks
information from the public on where bats roost, provides
site visits and advice to residents with bats in buildings,
and requests help from the public to act as Citizen Scien-
tists to help count bat populations. A local biologist can
visit your property to assess your bat situation, identify
the bat species and provide you with information on safe
evictions and bat-houses.
One of the focuses this year is on the BC Bat Count
where residents are encouraged to count bats leaving
a roost site on their property for four nights in order to
monitor populations. Tis long-term monitoring infor-
mation is very valuable since there is very little known
about local bat species and their population numbers.
If you have bats living in your buildings, would like to
join the BC Bat Count, or need information on how to
build a bat-house visit www.kootenaybats.com or call
1-855-9BC-BATS, (1-855-922-2287).

Kootenay Lakes Partnership
Open House
Te Kootenay Lakes Partnership (KLP) is a multi-
agency forum that works to establish lake management
strategies that support sustainable communities while
considering ecological, cultural, and community values.
Its mandate is to establish lake management strategies for
identifed values such as ecological, cultural, aesthetic and
recreational ones, that support sustainable communities.
On Kootenay Lake the KLP has completed an ecologic-
al inventory and an archaeological study. Tis fall, the
Ktunaxa Nation Council, in cooperation with the Lower
Kootenay Indian Band, will be conducting a Cultural Val-
ues and Use Study (CVS) around the lake. Te CVS adds
to the base of knowledge and understanding to inform the
lake management planning process for the lake. To pro-
vide residents and visitors with more information about
the process and about healthy living on the lake, the KLP
is hosting an evening public open house in Nelson, July
10. It will be held at the Nelson and District Chamber of
Commerce, 225 Hall Street from 7 pm to 9 pm.
While lake levels remain high, the KLP recommends
the following tips for local residents and visitors to love
the water, and share the responsibility to care for it:
• Boaters are encouraged to watch their wake while
water levels remain high to avoid damage to shorelines
and wildlife habitat as well as docks, boats and other pri-
vate property, and to be cautious of submerged structures
that are normally visible;
• People exploring the shoreline should be considerate
of other users of this area such as waterfowl, amphibians
and fsh that may have experienced dif culty in nesting,
breeding or foraging this spring;
• See how native vegetation protects the shoreline from
erosion and provides habitat!
For more information on the KLP, please visit our web-
site at www.kootenaylakepartnership.com or contact
Ryan van der Marel, KLP Chair and Coordinator, 250-
505-7666, email [email protected]
