Waveney Branch Newsletter Spring 2013 Issue Two
Reg Charity 203644 (England and Wales) and SC037711 (Scotland)

Hi everyone!! and welcome to the Cats Furst Newsletter for Spring 2013 Bringing the latest Cats Protection news to our regular supporters

Pippa is a three year old tabby female and came into our care on the 22nd of February 2013. She is being fostered by Kate McNamara in Beccles. Some of the cats that come into our care need a lot of TLC, Pippa being one of them. Due to Pippa being timid Kate kept her in a spare room in her house and not in the cattery pens. Pippa is now playing with her toys and gives a purr when you stroke her. She will need a special understanding owner who will give her the time to trust again. As you can see in the photograph ,Pippa will steal your heart away and will need to be the only cat in the household.

Changes to Lost & Found – CP working with Animal Search UK Animal Search UK was established in 1999 by former police officer, Tom Watkins. As a pet lover, he had been frustrated that there were limited services available to help reunite owners and their missing pets, and set about trying to make a difference
Cats Protection reunites thousands of cats with their owners every year and while this is an important part of our work, it’s clear that the service needs an overhaul. Many branches find that keeping a lost and found register up to date can take up a lot of time - time that could be devoted to more direct cat care. We’ve also encountered issues where a cat can be posted on one branch’s ‘found’ list and on another branch’s ‘lost’ list – but with no easy way of matching the lost cat to its owner. With this in mind CP will shortly start working in partnership with Animal Search UK, one of the UK’s largest lost and found pet services, in the hope that between us we’ll be able to reunite many more thousands of cats with their owners each year. Animal Search UK offers a pet detective service as well as the opportunity for users to pre-register their pets, in case they go missing, and also to order posters and flyers to help the search for their lost animal. However, the most important aspect for CP is the cat matching software on their database; this enables details of lost cats to be cross referenced with details of found cats automatically and for free. This will greatly enhance the chances of a lost cat being found.

The project will see all lost and found enquiries directed to Animal Search UK from existing lost and found pages on branch websites.

Fundraising Report Alternative & Vintage Clothing Sale Day
On Saturday 2nd March at Belle Coaches, Hadenham Road, Lowestoft. Lorraine Dickens and her friends and colleagues from Belle Coaches organised an Alternative and Vintage Clothing Sale Day on behalf of the Branch. The photo shows some of the stock on sale. This event took a lot of time and effort to put together and get people to attend on the day. Freda organised a CP stall with donated new clothing, shoes, hand bags and cat throws hand-made by our volunteer Pat Vlachos. Lesley Fisher and her friend, Carole organised and manned the jewellery stall. Lesley who is in the photo commented how nice it was to attend a CP event organised by someone else for a change and not be in charge of the catering! Many friends baked and donated cakes for sale with a cup of tea or coffee. We took £80.00 on the Catering and £185.00 on the CP stalls. One of the ladies who baked and donated a cake saw Robbie , one of our gorgeous black cats on the Waveney CP web site, fell in love with him and after a successful home visit he is now enjoying life with his new family. allowing us to hold the Clothing Sale Day on their premises and to the courtesy extended to us by all their staff .

Cats in our care - A Case History
Lucy and her two four week old kittens came into our care on 17 December 2012. Below is the time line from coming into our care and being homed. Why it is taking so long to home young home-able cats , we just do not know.

Lucy came into our care on 17 December 2012 with her two four week old kittens, Jasmine and Charlie. Lucy was homed on the 9th March and is 3 years of age and was in our care for 12 weeks. Muriel Healey fostered this family of three and tells me they were all a joy to be with. Jasmine was homed on the 31 January being in our care for 7 weeks and was neutered on 22 April by her new owners This photo of her was taken at Coastline Vets in Carlton Colville during her second vaccination on the 18th February.

Charlie was homed on the 30 March being in our care for 15 weeks. We took him to a CP Homing Fair organised by Framlingham and Saxmundham Branch. A young family fell in love with him and after a successful home visit Charlie is now very happy in his new home in the On behalf of the Branch I would like to thank Belle Coaches for country. Find-a-cat launched The Cats Protection Find-a-cat system has now been launched on the main website cats.org.uk You can try it out by visiting the home page and entering your full postcode in the side bar box. By entering your postcode, the system will search for the cats available for homing in your area and display them in geographical order.

Neutering Report 2012
In 2012 I issued neutering vouchers for 205 males, 320 females, 87 feral / stray and 15 cats in care – a total of 627 – a 42.5% increase on 2011. This is probably the result of the Community Action Days which were organised by the RSPCA in Gt Yarmouth and Lowestoft. At these events we issued vouchers for the full cost of neutering to owners who were willing to give a £5.00 donation and could produce proof or their benefits. We attended 3 events in Gt Yarmouth and one in Lowestoft covering a total of 70 males and 106 females and I am pleased to say that the cost of these is covered by the NCC as they had agreed to pay the cost of neutering for the first 50 cats at each event. However, this year the NCC has reduced their contribution to cover the first 50 cats in the year no matter how many events we participate in. Keith and I also went out one evening to canvass an area in Worlingham where there is high population of un-neutered cats and we issued 10 vouchers there. At the beginning of the year the NCC gave us a £10,000 grant towards for neutering but that has not covered the costs. Our December statement shows that the Branch has had to pay £5640. Although we still have a claim in for some of the CAD neuterings this will not be credited to us until the January statement comes through. We now have to decide whether we will be financially able to continue with the RSPCA Action Days. We have completed CADs on 17th February and that will be covered by the NCC and another on March 27th.Future events will be decided at a later date when we know exactly how the finances stand. Fund raising is a difficult task, especially in the current economic climate. I am sure you are all aware that our shop in Beccles has closed as the costs have increased so much and the premises themselves are far from ideal. However, it was our biggest source of income and without it we must look to our members to do whatever they can to help individually or in small groups. Personally, I hate asking people for money or trying to sell stuff, organise coffee mornings etc. I don’t want to go out with tins and flags, but that is a personal thing. Hopefully many of you will feel differently! But I will do my little bit – I have signed up to pay £5.00 a month by standing order into our Branch account. It’s not a lot but it is easy, almost painless and Every Little Helps If you would like to do the same, please contact Keith on : 01502 563909. Thank you all for what you do, no matter how little it may be – it all helps. Linda Holland Neutering Officer.

sorely missed. I first came into contact with Judy when I received a generous donation from her to help our Branch's work for cats. I duly replied to her and thanked her and ensured she received our newsletters. Over the years she sent us donations and we started to write and 'talk' about cats. During one of these letters she mentioned the reason she supported Waveney was that she had fostered cats, but because of ill health could not longer do so, and the people she had helped did not even thank her - a little thing but it would have meant so much to her. As I always wrote to her and thanked her, and because of our 'letter chats' she liked to support Waveney Branch, Cats’ Protection. Her one 'sorrow' was that she could not foster or help more as she suffered from ill health and her husband, Roy, also, had to be cared for, but she said at least she could do one thing and that was send donations. Little did I know how ill she and her husband were because, by this time, Judy and I would chat on the phone and she was always cheerful and positive. I came to know her quite well through our love of cats and was very upset to learn of her death. The thought that helps me is that wherever she is now, the cats will be well looked after. Judy - thank you for what you have done for Waveney Branch and all cats.
