Dear Friends, The Child Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut (CGC) finishes another year with strength and stability, grounded in our mission and guided by our strategic plan. As each year ushers in new challenges and opportunities, we are pleased to report that this year we provided services to over 2,000 children and adolescents, while remaining committed to reinforcing and strengthening our position as a center of excellence. Despite the continuing pressures of the economy, we maintained a high level of service while embracing opportunity for growth. Foundational to all of our plans and achievements is our uncompromised focus on meeting the needs of the children and families who place their trust in the expertise and compassion of our professional staff.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES
CRISIS PROGRAMS Emergency Mobile Crisis Services –
provides immediate mental health assessment and crisis stabilization services for children and adolescents experiencing serious psychiatric symptoms or severe reactions to a recent traumatic event. With a special focus on youth suicide and violence prevention, crisis services are available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, and many services are available to go mobile to homes, schools or in the community.

Child Sexual Abuse Response Team – an interagency team,
integrating criminal justice and protective services investigations, while providing comprehensive services for child sexual abuse victims and non-offending parents. Specially trained Child Guidance Center therapists conduct investigative interviews at the request of the police or the state child protection agency and provide crisis therapy for the child and supportive services for the family to help them cope with the trauma of victimization. As the first in Connecticut to achieve national accreditation, this team serves as a model program in New England, providing training throughout the region.

Community Policing Partnership –
modeled on a program by the Yale Child Study Center and the New Haven Police Department, this program brings together police officers and mental health clinicians to provide 24-hour outreach and mental health services to child victims and “high risk” children identified by police. The goal of this partnership is to reduce the psychological consequences of violence and other traumatic events, and decrease the likelihood that youngsters exposed to violence will engage in acts of violence.

IN

CHILDREN SERVED HAD BEEN SEXUALLY ABUSED

Community Emergency Response Program – provides on-site assistance
and counseling in response to emergencies impacting large groups in the community. (i.e. suicide, terrorism, school violence, death of a youngster or teacher, natural disasters, etc.)

ONGOING TREATMENT PROGRAMS Child, Adolescent, and Family Therapy – the cornerstone of the
Child Guidance Center for over 55 years, this program utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach to provide a broad range of comprehensive individualized mental health assessments and treatment services, tailored to meet the needs of children and families.

PREVENTION PROGRAMS

OF CHILDREN SERVED REPORTED PROBLEMS WITH ACADEMIC FUNCTIONING
Systems of Care – provides intensive case management services to families of seriously emotionally disturbed children. With interagency collaboration, the Child Guidance Center works with the family to develop a customized service plan and help them access and coordinate resources to support the family’s efforts to avoid hospitalization or residential placement and maintain the child in the home.

Community Education – offers
mental health seminars and workshops for the general public and professionals working with children to increase awareness of issues affecting child development and to enhance the emotional well being of children and families.

Intensive Home Based Services –
provides intensive treatment services in-home and at community sites for youngsters with high risk behavioral problems. The goal is to successfully engage some of the most hard-to-reach adolescents and significantly reduce their delinquent and dangerous behavior and avoid placement in juvenile corrections facilities.

OF CHILDREN SERVED LIVED IN HOMES WITH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Consultation Services – offers
professional consultation services to area preschools and schools, courts, residential facilities and shelters, substance abuse programs and other youth serving agencies to help them more effectively respond to the special needs of youngsters with emotional or behavioral problems.

Children and Parent Resource Team – this interagency team provides
coordinated services for families of children with multiple needs, requiring resources from several community agencies. The team places a special emphasis on families whose children are at risk for abuse or neglect.

OF CHILDREN SERVED STRUGGLED WITH HIGH PARENT-CHILD CONFLICT

Crime Victims Assistance Program – provides 24-hour outreach
and mental health service to children who are witnesses or victims of crime, to reduce immediate and potential long-term emotional consequences.

PROTECTING CHILDREN

The Child Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the Child Sexual Abuse Response Team (SART) of Lower Fairfield County, on June 15, 2010. Featuring a keynote address by Chris Hansen, renowned correspondent for Dateline’s “To Catch a Predator,” UBS hosted a brunch at their Stamford Headquarters in recognition of the twenty years of protection and healing the team has provided to over 1,000 child victims and the successful apprehension and adjudication of sexual offenders.
Ellie Hartog was presented with a commemorative plate honoring her 19 years as team leader.
