Mike Heaney dedicated his
life to swimming.
The 25-year-old Voorhees na-
tive grew up learning and lov-
ing how to swim at the Downs
Farms Swim Club on Haddon-
field-Berlin Road in Cherry
Hill.
The Bishop Eustace grad
went on to become tri-captain
of the swim team at The Col-
lege of New Jersey his senior
year. During his final season in
2009, Heaney captured the Met-
ropolitan Conference Champi-
onship Title in the 200 back-
stroke event with a time of
1:51.81, which broke TCNJ’s
own school record.
Things were going well for
Heaney, friends said. He was
living on his own and working
for Verizon.
But on April 11, all that
changed.
Heaney was on his way to
register his car, which had
been impounded for outdated
registration. While riding his
bike to pay for his registration,
he was hit on his bicycle by a
car in northern New Jersey.
He sustained injuries and
has recently awoken from an
induced coma. He has spent
the past few months in a reha-
bilitation facility.
Because of all the medical
bills his family will incur, the

Summer means local produce

Bite into a plump peach, bake a
blueberry pie and check out
these area farm markets as the
summer heat envelops the Cher-
ry Hill community.
You don’t have to travel far to
find local produce this summer.
Here’s your summer guide on
what to buy and where to get it lo-
cally.
The last one standing
Back when Cherry Hill was
known as Delaware Township,
the region was chock-full of
farms. By 1931, 82 farms set up
shop in the township, dotting
hundreds of acres of open space
with farm fields and roadside
stands.
More than 80 years later, only
one working farm remains in
town – Springdale Farms, located
on Springdale Road, about half a
mile off of busy Route 70.
You can find loads of baked
goods, fresh fruits and vegeta-
bles, plants, and items for your
home and garden at the shop. The
Jarvis family, who’s owned and
run the farm since 1949, also sets
up shop each Saturday from 8
a.m. to noon at the Collingswood
Farmers Market.
This summer, guests at the
market can enjoy a variety of
fresh fruit and vegetables, includ-
ing beets, blackberries, broccoli,
cabbage, cucumbers, eggplant,
lettuce, peppers, raspberries,
beans, squash, and of course,
sweet corn and tomatoes.

swimming community is rallying
around Heaney to hold Meters for
Mike, a swim-a-thon on Sunday,
July 15 to raise money to help the
family.
The event will be held at the
Downs Farms Swim Club from
7:30 to noon.
Joanna Melchiorre, a volun-
teer aquatics director at the swim
club, has seen the impact
Heaney’s swimming career has
had on the community firsthand.
She’s been volunteering at Downs
Farms for more than 10 years, she
said, and also worked with
Heaney’s father, a Tri-County
Swimming representative.
“He’s a very happy boy. I re-
member when he was little, he
was always happy when he was
swimming. His mom said he has
a lot of friends,” Melchiorre said.
Friends near and far have
stepped up to organize the event
and provide assistance to the
Heaneys.
Heaney’s co-workers at Verizon
donated blood to help their friend
in the hospital. Swim club staff is
also working on getting the word
out about the event, going pool-to-
pool in Cherry Hill and Voorhees
to invite coaches, teams, swim-
mers and friends to the fundrais-
ing event.
Melchiorre said she expects a
big turnout during the event,
which costs $10 at the door to
enter the club the day of. Swim-
mers can also garner additional
pledges to swim and to support
Heaney.
Melchiorre said the swim clubs
she and staff members have visit-
ed already promised they would
be in attendance.
“I think it’s going to be wonder-
ful to see how many people know
and love him,” Melchiorre said.
Heaney deserves a helping
hand, Melchiorre said, after
doing so much for others.
The business/finance major
has also spent time as a volunteer
firefighter in the community and
is described by friends and family
as a hard worker.
“Swimming families are just
wonderful and willing to do any-
thing,” Melchiorre said.

All in the family
Tracy Duffield married into
the Duffield Family, which owns
and operates Duffield’s Farm
Market at 280 Chapel Heights Rd.
in Washington Township.
Duffield’s father-in-law took
over the family farm in 1953 at
age 16, carrying on the clan’s sto-
ried tradition.
Duffield manages the produce
at the market, while the two
other sisters-in-law oversee other
aspects of the store.
The farm has seen an abun-
dance of crops this season, and
an early bloom for many.
“It’s strawberry fields forever,”
Duffield said, noting that the
strawberry season continues to
yield fresh berries past its typical
timeline.
Peaches and corn came in
early, though, and Duffield said,
employees made sure to let every-
one in town know via Facebook,
Twitter and the market’s newslet-
ter.
The farm is enjoying an extra-
long season for its produce. But
that’s not the only reason to shop
there.
“You know it’s fresh. Our corn,
we only sell the day we pulled it.
You can’t do any better than
that,” Duffield said. ‘It’s cheaper,
as delivery people are adding
costs for fuel, and we’re very par-
ticular about how we raise our
crops.”
The market is open Monday
through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7
p.m. For more information, call
(856) 589-7090.
You can also sample some of
what Duffield’s has to offer at the
Voorhees Farmers Market, held
on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon
at the Voorhees Town Center.
For the whole gang
Crop seasons began extremely
early this year, said Pete John-
son, co-owner of Johnson’s Cor-
ner Farm in Medford.
“We’re loaded up with blueber-
ries,” he said in late June as the
cherry season waned.
All summer, visitors to the
farm can pick up fresh sweet
corn and peaches.
The farm also sells iced corn.
“It’s been our trademark in the
sweet corn part of our business
since my parents started bring-
ing sweet corn down in 1960,” he
said.
Corn kept cold stays fresh, he
explained.

gies are not the only draw to the

Each night in the summer, the
farm will be hosting special
events ranging from fun nights
for the family to ice cream socials
to splash pad nights.
“Family Fun Nights are
Wednesday evenings in the sum-

ment for the family.”
Some nights, there may be an
animal show, while a balloon
maker will be on hand for other
nights.
The entrance fee for Discovery
Barnyard will be slashed in half.

page each week to find the theme.
“The hayrides that run out to
the fields are free from 5 p.m. to 7

While the farm is generally
family-oriented, a more adult at-

A DJ will be present to add a

A sure shore stop
Russo’s Fruit and Vegetable
Farm Market has stood as a com-
munity staple for more than 40
years at the intersection of Car-
ranza Road and Medford Lakes
Road in the heart of Tabernacle.
Famous for its apple cider
donuts, Jersey Fresh ripe toma-
toes, corn, peaches and blueber-
ries, the market is a traditional
stop for many passers-by on their
vacation route to the state’s fa-
mous beaches.
“Being on the four corners
here, I think we’re very fortunate
for the location that we have,”
said Russo family member Joann
Gsell.
The market is a familiar com-
munity face, she explained, and
the farm itself has prospered in
Tabernacle for more than 70
years.
Over time, the farm grew to in-
clude the market and bakery as
well as a greenhouse operation to
meet customer needs.
This year, produce has grown
ahead of schedule. Currently,
blueberries and tomatoes rule
the scene.
“What we have that’s our own
is constantly changing,” Gsell
said, referencing local produce
items. The bakery, however, has
consistent offerings.
Shamong’s Valenzano Winery
options are also sold on the prem-
ises.
Russo’s is open from 8 a.m. to 6
p.m. every day from Easter to
Christmas, barring Thanksgiv-
ing Day. Learn more at www.rus-

in our opinion
F
rom all of us at Elauwit Media
to all of our loyal readers, we
wish you the happiest and
healthiest Fourth of July.
As rough as things are in our coun-
try – our economy is still poor, unem-
ployment is extremely high and the
Phillies can’t seem to win a baseball
game anymore – things could be a lot
worse for us.
A quick glance at the world around
us reveals just how fortunate we are, as
Americans, to have the freedoms we
do. And let’s face it, these freedoms we
often take for granted.
Imagine, for just a moment, what it
must be like to live in Syria.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in China, where we recently learned of
how real and barbaric the nation’s one-
child-only policy really is.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in Egypt, where there’s still instability
and a lack of confidence in the nation’s
parliament.
We live in a nation where, despite
our differences, we manage to co-exist
peacefully for the most part.
We live in a nation where our Con-
gress and where the office of the presi-
dent have functioned and survived for
236 years.
We live in a nation where, for the
most part, we’re free to do as we please.
This simply isn’t the case in many
corners of the world.
Today, we give thanks for the liber-
ties won for us hundreds of years ago.
We give thanks for the many women
and men who have made incredible
sacrifices to protect these freedoms in
battle in Afghanistan and Iraq – and
countless other places in the Middle
East and abroad.
We remember their families who,
like they, have also made sacrifices by
saying goodbye so we can do things as
simple as having a barbecue sometime
today.
Finally, we give thanks for all that
America is and stands for. It may not
be perfect, but a quick glance of the
news shows: life could be much worse.
Happy Fourth of July

A disbarred Cherry Hill attor-
ney was charged with misrepre-
senting himself as a practicing
lawyer and stealing from a client
with money he was supposed to
use to pay her injured child’s med-
ical bills, Camden County Prose-
cutor Warren W. Faulk an-
nounced last week.
Stephen M. Hiltebrand, 61, of
Cherry Hill, was charged with
two counts of unauthorized prac-
tice of law and a single count of
theft by failure to make required
disposition, the prosecutor’s of-
fice said.
Hiltebrand voluntarily agreed
to be disbarred in 2011, the prose-
cutor’s office said. By voluntarily
agreeing to disbarment, Hilte-
brand forfeited the right to prac-
tice law, or to present himself as a
practicing attorney, in New Jer-
sey, according to the prosecutor’s
office.
The Camden County Prosecu-
tor’s Office says it received infor-
mation from a couple that Hilte-
brand had continued to represent
them in their personal-injury suit
after his disbarment. The office
says it received a similar but unre-
lated allegation from a private
company that had received corre-
spondence from Hiltebrand in
which he presented himself as an
attorney representing the compa-
ny’s opponent in a civil case.
In both cases, signed docu-
ments were obtained through the
investigation that represented
Hiltebrand as an attorney-at-law
in New Jersey.
One of the incidents that led to
Hiltebrand’s disbarment also re-
sulted in the theft charge, the
prosecutor’s office said. One of
his former clients reported in
March that Hiltebrand withheld
more than $4,000 in settlement
funds from a personal-injury suit
stemming from injuries the
client’s child sustained in a car ac-
cident, reports said.
She reported Hiltebrand acted
as fiduciary for her and supplied
her with false documents – which
he claimed proved he was paying
her child’s medical expenses – in-
cluding checks he allegedly sent
to medical creditors to pay for her
child’s treatment, the prosecutor
said. In reality, the prosecutor’s of-
fice says, Hiltebrand had not paid
the medical bills. Investigations
revealed he had not adequately ac-
counted for his client’s funds.
Hiltebrand was admitted to the
New Jersey Bar in 1978, and he
had an office in Cherry Hill on
Route 38 prior to disbarment, ac-
cording to records. Records also
indicate he was reprimanded by a
judicial –review board, in connec-
tion with the New Jersey
Supreme Court, in 2002 on a simi-
lar matter.
The investigation is ongoing.
