CHARLEVOIX COUNTY —
Those located in Boyne City,
Boyne Falls, Charlevoix, East Jordan and Ellsworth each had the
opportunity to witness some
great athletes and teams perform
over the course of the 2014 sports
seasons.
Whether it was from their own
community or watching studentathletes nearby, those that were
not playing at the time, showed

up in masses to support for their
neighbors at their respective
events.
While there were many highlights to the calendar year, some
of those that stick out are the
Boyne City boys basketball team
earning the Lake Michigan Conference title for the first time in
16 years with a perfect 14-0
record. Boyne Falls also repeated
as unbeaten champions in the
Northern Lakes Conference for
the third straight season and
then the Lady Loggers made it a

clean sweep for Boyne Falls,
earning their first ever NLC basketball championship.
Once tournament play began,
the area witnessed some amazing
basketball with district champions coming from the East Jordan
boys, their first title since 1995;
the Boyne Falls boys and the
Charlevoix girls each won their
first crown since 2006.
East Jordan wasn’t finished
there as the Red Devils went on to
win their first regional title since
1953 before falling in the Class C

quarterfinal behind the play of
All-State guard Noah Bacchus.
Paige Podskalny and Ben Walton of East Jordan each inked
their respective letter of intent to
attend Northwood University and
continue their athletic careers,
Paige in women’s golf and Ben in
football.
Amber Way of Charlevoix and
Kylie Hicks each won state titles
at the MHSAA track and field finals, Way took top honors in the
3200M run for the second consecutive season in a time of 10:35.33

and also finished third in the
1600M run. Hicks won the 300M
hurdles in a school record 44.59
seconds. Kylie signed her letter of
intent to run for Grand Valley
State University.
Both the Boyne City baseball
and softball teams were successful in winning their respectful
districts with both teams advancing to the regional finals behind
outstanding team play from their
student-athletes.

DNR’s Gaylord Customer
Service Center responded and
located the 4x4 bull elk and
determined it had been killed
by a single gunshot.
After a lengthy investigation by the officers, a suspect
was identified and a confession was obtained. Charges
currently are under review
by the Montmorency County
Prosecutor.
“Good old-fashioned police
work by our officers brought
this case to a successful end,”
Lt. Jim Gorno said. “We continue to encourage the public
to be diligent in watching out
for our natural resources.
Without the hunter calling
the RAP Line to report this
case, it could have gone unsolved."
Conservation officers con-

tinue to investigate a number
of poaching-related incidents
involving elk in northern
Michigan. Anyone with information regarding any incidents is asked to call the DNR
Law Division at the Gaylord
Customer Service Center at

What You Should Look for When House Hunting

compliments of mike Stark,
coldwell banker Schmidt Realtors
east Jordan. (231) 536-7700

If you’re shopping for a
home and can afford to buy
one, you couldn’t be in a better position right now. In
many parts of the country,
housing inventory is high and
both home prices and interest
rates are low and as a buyer,
you can take advantage of
that.
With so many properties on
the market, you can probably
take a more leisurely approach to house hunting without getting into a fast-paced
bidding war. There is a caveat,
however. The best homes
priced properly for the market
conditions will always be in
higher demand.
As you begin your search
for the right home for you, it
pays to keep in mind things
you need to check carefully so
that they don’t cost you big
bucks in the long run.

Kitchen
If kitchens matter to you,
you might want to be fairly selective about them when looking for a new home. The2009
average price for a minor
kitchen remodel for a
midrange home is more than
$21,000 and the cost for a

major remodel is more than
$57,000 and the costs are substantially more for higher-end
homes.
Look carefully at the appliances, cabinetry, counters and
floor. Those are the elements
that cost more to replace. If
possible, you want newer appliances to save money on repairs and energy costs;
solid-wood cabinets; and
solid-surface counters, such
as granite, stainless steel,
butcher block or engineered
stone. Your floor choices include wood, cork, laminates
and tile and it’s a matter of
what’s comfortable and
durable for your lifestyle.

Bathrooms
Following kitchens, bathrooms are also expensive
rooms to remodel at a 2009 national average of more than
$16,000 because of the fixtures
and plumbing. Make sure you
see no leaks or evidence of
leaks in tubs, toilets and flooring. Sharing bathrooms can
be one of those pain points for
families so make sure you get
what you need.

Roof
A roof is a big-ticket item
with an average 2009 replacement cost of more than
$19,000 although adding a second layer to a roof is not
nearly as expensive as replacing the entire thing. Inside
the house, you can check the
attic, ceilings and skylights
for signs of water damage,
look for places where the roof
deck is sagging, and see if you
can detect any light coming
through. If you do see light
coming through, it is likely
not a problem if the roof is
made of shake shingles. Outside, inspect for cracked,
ripped, curling or missing
shingles and damaged flashing. Also look for rotting,
buckling, blistering or algae
growth, which could also be
signs of trouble.

HVAC
An old heater can be hard
to repair and eats up energy
at a pace faster than newer
units. Furnaces can start at
about $5,000 to replace and if
you buy a combined unit with
the air conditioner, add on
several thousand dollars. You

may need to replace the heat
pump or air conditioner if it’s
older than 10 years and a furnace or boiler if it’s more
than 15 years old.

Basement
The extra room you gain
may be a huge headache if
the basement floods. Look for
water marks and find out if
the house has a system for removing water.
Other areas of concern that
might cost money down the
line are the driveways and
sidewalks, chimneys, insulation and windows.
If you find a house and
your offer is accepted, you’ll
be dealing with a home inspector who can fill in the
gaps with a professional’s eye.
The thing is, if you really
want the home, you don’t have
to let problems deter you. You
are in position to negotiate a
price reduction with the
seller or insist repairs be
made to the property before
your offer is finalized.
If you can afford a house,
you can afford the luxury of
taking your time to find the
right one for you.

Ford recently introduced SYNC® 3, a new communications and entertainment system that is faster, more intuitive
and easier to use with enhanced response to driver commands. image coPyRight FoRd motoR comPany

Ford SYNC® 3 delivers new, innovative ways for people
to stay connected with their lives while on the move
Ford recently introduced
SYNC® 3, a new communications
and entertainment system that is
faster, more intuitive and easier to
use with enhanced response to
driver commands. SYNC 3’s more
conversational voice recognition
technology, a more smartphonelike touch screen and easy-to-read
graphics will help millions of drivers connect with their lives and
control their smartphone while on
the road. The next-generation system builds on the capability of
SYNC technology already in more
than 10 million SYNC-equipped vehicles on the road globally. SYNC 3
begins arriving on new vehicles
next year.
“Ford is delivering an easier
way for customers to stay connected,” said Raj Nair, Ford chief
technical officer and group vice
president, Global Product Development. “SYNC 3 is another step forward in delivering connectivity
features customers most want, and
they tell us this kind of technology
is an important part of their decision to buy our vehicles.”
Ford took a customer-centric approach in developing SYNC 3,
drawing on 22,000 customer comments and suggestions, plus insights gleaned from research
clinics, market surveys and tech
industry benchmarking.
Although SYNC 3 is optimized
for hands-free use, an all-new
touch screen delivers an experience similar to a smartphone or
tablet. Quicker response to touch
as well as voice commands and
smartphone-like gestures including pinch-to-zoom and swipe are
central to SYNC 3, along with
crisp, modern graphics. A bright
background and large buttons
with high-contrast fonts for daytime use help reduce screen
washout in the sun. At night, the
display automatically switches to a
dark background to help reduce
eye fatigue and minimize reflections on the windows.
“We considered all the modern
smartphones and mobile operating
systems and created something familiar but unique,” said Parrish
Hanna, Ford global director of
Human Machine Interface.

SYNC 3 reduces on-screen complexity and prioritizes the control
options customers use most. The
home screen features three zone
choices – Navigation, Audio and
Phone. Tile-like icons dominate
the screen, with a quick access
function tray along the bottom
making for a more straight-forward user experience. Phone contacts are searchable via a simple
swipe of the finger to scroll
through the alphabet. With “One
Box Search,” SYNC 3 users can
look up points of interest or enter
addresses in much the same way
they use an Internet search engine.
“Simplicity has value,” said
Hanna. “Reducing the number of
things on-screen also makes control easier and is designed to limit
the number of times a driver has
to glance at the screen.”
Ford SYNC – the industry’s first
system to widely and most affordably offer voice-activated technology to control smartphones –
becomes more capable with the
next-generation system by minimizing the number of steps
needed to carry out a command.
With SYNC 3, simply saying
“play <song, artist, album or
genre>” prompts the system to
play the desired song, artist,
playlist or album; there is no need
to identify the desired category. To
switch back to a radio station, the
user just says the name of the SiriusXM station or terrestrial radio
station number.
Voice search results are enhanced by a better understanding
of how consumers refer to businesses and points of interest. Drivers don’t have to know an exact
name. They can search for “Detroit Airport” rather than using
the official name “Detroit Metropolitan Airport.” With addresses,
they can say, “Eleven Twenty-Five
Main Street” instead of “One One
Two Five Main Street.” When connected to an Apple iPhone, SYNC 3
offers seamless integration of Siri
Eyes-Free control. Drivers can
seek Siri’s help by holding down
SYNC’s “Push to Talk” steering
wheel button – much as they would
hold down the button on an iPhone

to initiate a Siri session.
Ford was first to bring voice control to in-vehicle apps with AppLink™, and the experience is
further improved with SYNC 3.
AppLink allows customers to connect their smartphone to their vehicle and control their compatible
apps using voice commands or buttons on the vehicle display screen.
AppLink now automatically discovers smartphone apps including
Spotify, Pandora, Stitcher, NPR
One, SiriusXM Radio and
iHeartRadio Auto, and displays
their unique graphics and branding. Music and news apps are automatically displayed along with
other media sources, just like
AM/FM or SiriusXM.
“Overall, AppLink is faster,
more responsive and easier to find
your apps,” said Julius Marchwicki, Ford global product manager, AppLink. “The overall design
of SYNC 3 allows for better integration with smartphones – resulting in a more user-friendly
experience.”
Developers easily can integrate
branded apps into AppLink, providing Ford customers with an experience on the vehicle screen
similar to what they see on smartphone screens.
SYNC 3 also features the new
ability to update the software via
Wi-Fi. Once a vehicle is set up with
credentials for a home Wi-Fi network accessible in a customer’s
driveway or garage, for example, it
can automatically download updates. SYNC 3, like earlier generations of the technology, provides
subscription-free emergency service 911 Assist®.
The customer’s Bluetooth-connected phone is used to dial 911 in
the event of a significant accident,
alerting first-responders with the
vehicle’s location. With SYNC 3,
the car relays additional information, including if airbags were deployed, the type of crash (front,
side, rear or rollover) and the number of safety belts detected in use,
in order to help emergency call
takers dispatch the appropriate resources to the scene.
