Rayders off to strong start
By Chris Fiel

Charlevoix 4-5,
Imlay City 2-8
IMLAY CITY — Austin Putman
tossed 3 1/3 innings of one run
relief in the opener as Charlevoix
earned a game one victory 4-2
against Imlay City on April 12.
The Rayders dropped game two 85.
In game one, Noah Certa paced
Charlevoix at the dish with a pair
of hits and scoring two runs as
well.
“We were able to get all 16 players into action and used seven
pitchers, which was nice,” coach
Allen Telgenhof said. “Our defense hurt us, we made 11 errors
which led to eight unearned runs
for the weekend, which is way too
many and really cost us the game
on Saturday.”
In the nightcap, Nate Moon
fhad 3 hits including a double,
while Andrew Michaud added
two hits and an RBI.

Charlevoix 11-12,
Burton Bentley 1-2
BURTON — Charlevoix picked
up right where they left off last
season, earning a pair of wins
over Burton Bentley, 11-1 and 12-2
on April 11.
Nate Moon takes over as the
Rayder ace following the departure of the graduated Tommy
Zipp. Moon dominated the Bulldogs by fanning 12 in five innings
of work, picking up the win in
the process. J.J. Bottomley picked
up the win in game two for
Charlevoix.
“It was just nice to get outside
and play,” coach Allen Telgenhof
said. “We didn’t play our best
baseball, which isn’t that big of a
surprise since we’d only been
outside two days, but we swung
the bats reasonably well and ran
the bases aggressively.”
The Charlevoix offensive attack was led by Austin Putman,
Luke Klinger and Will Telgenhof
with five hits on the day. Putman
tripled and doubled, while
Klinger added a double as well.
Moon also chipped in with two
doubles among his four hits on
the afternoon.

Red Devils split opening series with Elk Rapids
winning ugly,” East Jordan
coach Tom Reid Jr. said. “We
jumped to a 5-0 lead after four innings and just about handed
them the game late. I know I
have never seen a no-hit pitching
performance when the losing
team scores six runs. All I have
to say is I hope they got the jitters out..”
Dustin Hejka scored the winning run in the bottom of the
sixth on a Jordan Peterson double.
The Elks scored six times despite not picking up a hit as they
took advantage of four Red Devil
errors, five walks and two hit
batsmen.

East Jordan 7-3,
Elk Rapids 6-5
EAST JORDAN — It wasn’t
pretty, but then again, a win is a
win.
The East Jordan baseball team
got off to a positive start as they
downed Elk Rapids 7-6 in game
one, before falling 5-3 in the
nightcap in a Lake Michigan
Conference doubleheader on
April 10.
In the opener, the Red Devils
got out of the gates first and had
to hold on despite three East Jordan pitchers combining for a nohitter.
“This game was the epitome of

pair of doubles, while driving in
three runs and stealing three
bases.
Noah Raymond singled and
Tim Schut drove in a run with a
sacrifice fly, walked twice and
swiped a pair of bases.
Sophomore Colin Petrie tossed
4 2/3 innings on the mound, allowing three unearned runs
while striking out two and walking four. Raymond pitched 1/3 of
an inning and got a huge out in
the fifth inning with the bases
loaded. Eventual winning
pitcher Oscar Scheier also
pitched out of a bases loaded jam
in the top of the sixth inning by
retiring all three batters he
faced.
“Peterson came up huge with a
huge hit to get us the win and

Petrie pitched very well,” coach
Reid added.
In game two, the Elks edged EJ
5-3.
Alward took the loss on three
hits, fanning five and walking
six, with three earned runs.
In the second game, the Red
Devils fell to Elk Rapids, 5-3. Alward took the pitching loss despite allowing just three hits
while striking out five and walking six. Three of the five runs
were earned.
The EJ offense was led by
Schut with three hits, including
a double with one RBI and four
steals.
Alward added an RBI double,
while Wyatt Crick and Hejka
both singled.
“Altogether, we did everything

we needed to do to win game two
but didn’t,” Reid said. “We hit at
least eight bullets to the outfield
right at Elk Rapids outfielders, I
also sent a kid home on a shallow flyball to the outfield and got
him thrown out. We stole seven
bases as a team.”
“Tucker pitched well also,”
coach Reid added. “We should’ve
won both. All-in-all we can take a
lot of positives from tonight’s
games and build off it. I think
we are all just happy to have
baseball here and the snow gone.
It was a great night for baseball.”

EAST JORDAN — The
East Jordan softball team
has their season off to a
good start, downing ELk
Rapids 6-1 and 11-5 in a
pair of Lake Michigan
Conference contests on
April 10.
Taylor Kroush tripled
and drove in two runs in
leading the game one offense, while Kayly Zimmer
added a double with one
RBI.
Also for EJ, Sydney
Drew singled and had a
RBI, while Lindsay
Schroeder and Lindsey
Graham both singled.
The Red Devils scored
twice in the first and
tacked on four more in the
second, while limiting the
Lady Elks to a single run
in the fourth.
“What an amazing start
to the season,” Red Devil
coach Meg Kitson said.
“We never would have believed it possible to play
this soon. Kudos to Kevin
LaVanway for clearing our
field and Tom Reid, Ray
Fisher and Phyllis Ol-

szewski for making it
playable.”
Schroeder struck out 10,
walked three and allowed
just three hits in earning
the win.
“Lindsay Schroeder
pitched amazingly and the
girls played well,” Kitson
said. “They looked like
mid-season form.”
In the nightcap, East Jordan struck again with a
pair of runs in the opening
inning and then used a
seven-run second to break
the game open.
Tori Goodrich earned
the victory in the circle, allowing five hits, fanning
seven and walking three.
“Tori (Goodrich) pitched
well and our defense
played solidly behind her,”
coach Kitson noted. “It was
great to get a conference
sweep so early in the season.”
At the plate, Zimmer finished with two hits, including a double and three RBI,
while Goodrich and
Marissa Klop each added
two hits.
Also for the Red Devils,
Drew and Karlee Dunson

2014 High School Baseball Season Previews
year coach Mark Pontoni, having
only seniors on the roster.
“When coach Todd Shumaker
retired after last season, he didn’t
leave the cupboard bare,” Pontoni said. “There’s a lot of talent
on our squad, even if it’s young.”
Some of that talent includes
senior Jordan Fair, juniors Dalton Gardner, Max Cuper, Maceo
Vroman, and Jeff Miller.
“I expect the strength of the
team to be our defense and our
team speed,” Pontoni added. “We
should be very strong up the middle.”
Coach Pontoni also has high
expectations for three Rambler
sophomores; Derek Willis, Tanner Kruzel and James Roberson.
“I expect them to make contributions right out of the gate.”
Boyne also has a number of
versatile players to fill various
roles led by senior Chandler
Roberts, who the coach noted,
“Has probably had the best preseason of any of our players.”
Juniors Alec Hoagland, Ethan
Habasco, and Jared Fleming are
all expected to have big years for
as the Ramblers look to compete
against the more experienced
teams in the Lake Michigan Conference.

Boyne Falls

BOYNE FALLS — Coach Bill
Montgomery returns a young but
experienced group as many of
the team were forced into key
roles as freshman or eighth
graders.
Some of those returners are
juniors Andrew Stevens, Hunter
Williams and sophomore Marcus
Matelski.
Stevens will split time on the
mound and behind the plate,
while Williams and Matelski will
also see time on the hill.
Eighth grader, Austin Harmon
will see some find time on the
mound for the Loggers.
Other BF returnees are Truman Crego, Andrew Campbell,
Jordan Berreth, Sean Lynch and
Leszek Wasylewski.
With the limited spring in
Northern Michigan, the Loggers
are still waiting to take the field.
“The extent of our outdoor
work is doing a little throwing on
a patch of bare grass next to the
gym, but we have the batting cage
set up and are doing the best we
can,” coach Montgomery said.

Charlevoix
CHARLEVOIX — The Rayders
look to another strong season as
they only lost two starters to
graduation, including All-State
selection Tommy Zipp, but coach
Allen Telgenhof returns a talented bunch, led by senior Shane
Sutherland and juniors Nate
Moon, Noah Certa and Will Telgenhof.
Sutherland (7-0 last season) and
Moon (4-0) will lead the pitching
rotation, while sophomores
Austin Putman and Hunter Cox
will be looked upon to log some
innings as will senior Logan Eckhardt and junior KeNan Borths.
Will Telgenhof will return to
his position behind the plate, and
a solid infield of senior Luke
Klinger at first, Cox or Putman at
second, Moon or Sutherland at
shortstop and senior J.J. Bottomley at third.
The outfield will be anchored
by All-State selection Certa in
center, while Cox, Putman and
Eckhardt are all vying for the
other outfield positions.
“We went 27-3 last year and
won our first conference and district championships in years,”
coach Telgenhof said. “The team
has set even higher goals for this
season, though they know how
hard they have to work to stay on

top. We have a great group of
guys, led by our tri-captains
Sutherland, Klinger and Eckhardt.”

east Jordan
EAST JORDAN — The Red
Devils have high expectations
this season, as they return seven
starters from their 2013 district
runner up team, lead by All-State
senior outfielder Tim Schut.
Also returning for East Jordan
are Jordan Peterson and Wyatt
Crick in the outfield. The infield
returnees are senior Oscar
Scheier at third base, senior
Dustin Hejka at shortstop and
junior Noah Raymond at second.
Senior Jaden Hoffman and junior Herschell Sutton are in the
hunt for playing time at first base
after the graduation of three-year
all-region selection Zach Shepard.
“I am very comfortable with either of these young men at this
position and feel they will be
pushing each other all season
long,” coach Tom Reid Jr said.
Junior Tucker Alward returns
as the Red Devil catcher and his
flame-throwing right arm will be
counted on as one of the East Jordan pitchers this season as is
sophomore Colin Petrie. Hejka,

Scheier, Raymond, and Sutton
will all be called on to pitch from
time-to-time as well.
Junior Bailey Sargent looks to
see significant time in the outfield when Alward pitches as Peterson will assume the catching
duties, while other newcomers
include; seniors Joey Russell and
Tyler Goodburn, along with juniors David Isham, Michael “Doc”
Suess, and Alex Crawford.
“I really expect for us to contend for the Lake Michigan Conference this season,” coach Reid
said. “Our lineup top to bottom is
solid and fast. When you can return seven starters from your
previous season, you have a great
deal of confidence in what to expect of your team. Hejka and
Scheier were both all-district selections last season as juniors as
each hit over .300 and Schut was
all-everything hitting .491 last
year as a junior. All three of
these boys have seemed to relish
the role as our senior leaders as
well as Jaden Hoffman. Many of
these young men have been to
various camps since last season
and the hard work looks to be
paying off in their swings and
their confidence. We should be
much improved from the 8-14
team we were last season.”

Top 10 Home Closing Checklist Tips for Sellers

Compliments of Mike stark,
Coldwell Banker schmidt Realtors
East Jordan. (231) 536-7700

It doesn’t matter whether you are
selling your home as a short sale or as
a traditional seller, your checklist for
home selling is identical. There are
certain things on a home selling
checklist that every responsible seller
should do.
You would utilize your home closing checklist after all of your personal belongings and furniture has
been moved. Although, not every
seller is required to prior to or on the
day of closing, most home sellers find
that they can’t begin to wrap up the
process until everything is removed
from the home.

Closing CheCklist tip #1:
retain exeCuted seller disClosures, purChase ContraCt and addendums
Ideally, you will receive a complete
closing package by your escrow officer or closing agent. But you could
also find some of these documents
scattered about in your car or at your
office. Keep all of these documents in

a safe place. It’s conceivable you could
need them again, especially if a bill
was unpaid or the buyer challenges
something and hires an attorney.

water won’t turn on.

a professional cleaning service. How
clean to leave a house is often personal preference. It’s not always necessary to shampoo the carpets, but
that’s a nice touch. This also means
wipe down cabinets, inside and out. It
doesn’t hurt to make your last impression on the buyer a good one by polishing sink fixtures. Leave your home
the way you, as a buyer, would like to
find it.

There are so many quirks that only
a home seller knows, and you could
pass on these tips to a new home
buyer during the final walk-through.
Things like which light switch operates the lights, whether a door sticks,
or how to clean a swimming pool. I
like to ask sellers what they always
wanted to do for a home improvement
project but never got around to doing.

Closing CheCklist tip #2:
Clean the house

Closing CheCklist tip #3:
turn off shut-off valves
If you have disconnected a washer,
for example, make sure the shut-off
value is completely turned off because a small drip, drip, can eventually flood a home. Some sellers shut
off the valves to all water sources
such as sinks, toilets and dishwashers, too. Leave a note for the buyers so
