East Jordan Red Devils will

men bring with them a
tough work ethic and a
great attitude.
“Well, we don't have a lot
of kids out this season, but
their attitude is great, its a
breath of fresh air,” vet-
eran coach Allan Peterson
said. “I'm proud of these
guys and how hard they
have been working.”

turnees and early surprises

Walton, is regarded and an
outstanding athlete and
super player, and Weston
Swanson a junior that came
into the preseason with
some added foot speed and
has been a pleasant sur-
prise.
“We have a positive out-
look on the season,” Peter-
son added. “Were pretty
optomistic about things
and we look to surprise a
few people and do well.”

EAST JORDAN – The Red Devils return
two very talented runners in the form of
junior Josh Wojan on the boys team and
sophomore sensation Kayla Keane on the
girls.
“We look for Josh to be one of the top
runners in the area and he will be hard to
beat.” Red Devil coach Rick Hawley said.
“Our girls team is doing well and will be
led by Kayla.”
Rounding out the boys team are junior
Donvee Burks, sophomore Gabe Hawley
and freshman Teddy Nachazel.
“Donvee and Gabe should be very com-
petitive for us in league, and Teddy looks
good as a young runner.” the coach added.
The girls squad is compromised of sen-
ior Casey Keane, juniors, Holley Carson,
Tess McNitt, Ellen Brandell and Tori
Goodrich. All four juniors are third year
runners, with Goodrich transferring from
Ellsworth.
Another high note for the girls team is
freshmen Brittanie Moses.
“I see a very competetive runner in Brit-
tanie,” Hawley added. “I believe she will be
a big asset to our girls team.

East Jordan Varsity Volleyball

By Chris Fiel
EAST JORDAN –
Coach Anne Crick will
look to third year starter
and senior Valerie Pe-
ters to lead the Lady Red
Devils on the court this
year.
The standout three
sport athlete is one of
the areas top hitters and
will resume her position
as strong side hitter for
East Jordan this fall. Pe-
ters led the team last sea-
son as a junior in kills,
digs and serving.
Seniors Angela
Watkins, McKenna
Steltzner and Stevie Bar-
tig return to the line-up,
Watkins will return to
her middle hitter posi-
tion, Bartig will move
over to the setter posi-
tion and Steltzner will be
filling the libero position
for the Red Devils. Fel-
low senior Allie Sutton
will also contribute.
Also on the team are
juniors; Mariah Holm,
Lindsey Graham and
Paige Poindexter, along
with sophomores Kris-
ten Malpass and Katie
Spence.
“The girls have
worked hard this sum-
mer attending team
camp and multiple
scrimmages,” coach
Crick said. “We are look-
ing forward to the sea-
son.”

CHARLEVOIX – The 2011
Charlevoix Rayder Volleyball
team took the Northern Michi-
gan area on quite a tournament
ride last season, where they
reached the state semifinals for
the first time in school history,
and in the process captured
their fourth straight Lake
Michigan Conference champi-
onship, district title and their
first ever regional crown.
The 2012 squad will take on a
new look with some different
faces, and one of those in coach
Audra Randall. Randall has
been part of coach Liz Shaw's
staff for the past eight years
and takes over the program
with Shaw taking some time off
to deliver her family's second
child.
“I have been part of Coach
Shaw's staff for eight years.
Having a congruent philosophy
is instrumental for a successful
program. I plan on maintaining
the foundation and integrity of
our Rayder Volleyball Program
which will allow for a smooth
transition into our 2012 season,”
Randall said. “I am grateful for
my experiences with the 2011
team, they are all wonderfully
talented girls who were well
coached. Those experiences
allow me to grow as a coach and
move forward confident in the
girls mission to continue our
great Rayder Volleyball tradi-
tion.”
Some of the top returnees off
that team are: senior, Karley
Pearsall, a middle hitter. Ran-
dall expects her to be a big im-
pact player again this year.
Karley is a big middle hitter
with great blocking skills, and
will be taking on more responsi-
bilities in the back row this
year.
Another veteran is senior
middle hitter, Anna Way. Way
has great agility and speed and
reads the opponents offense well
and her responsibilities will in-
crease with passing and back
row defense as well.
Sophomore, left hitter Made-
line Boss has worked on her
game a lot over the summer and
excels in the front row and
looks to be a strong defensive
presence.
Randall expects the team to
continue to work hard each and
everyday in practice so when
they take the court they are pre-
pared to compete at a high level.
“We have a long history of
fine Rayder Volleyball achieve-
ments and the 2012 team knows
that the hard work and commit-
ment is what it takes to grow
and succeed,” the coach added.
“As a team, the girls cannot
compare themselves to last year
but create a new identity for
themselves.” She said. “There
may be a few bumps along the
way but overcoming them and
growing in a positive way is
where our teams success will
come.”
Rayders poised for
another great season

BOYNE CITY – The Ramblers
welcome back eight returnees
from last seasons 20-20-8 team,
including three players entering
their third season on the varsity.
Those third year players are
senior outside hitter Dani
Matthews, junior middle hitter
Kylie Hicks and junior setter
Heather Nichols.
Also returning are: senior
Mary Myers, along with juniors
Courtney Weldon, Erin Baker,
Rainy McCune and Mallory
Karaszewski.
“Our strength for this season
should be our experience and
team chemistry,” nine year vet-
eran Rambler coach Casie
Parker said. “They have a good
team bond.”
New to the team are; juniors
Taylor Baker, Emily Evans and
Rebeca Wiser along with sopho-
more Paige Hornbeck.
Hicks was among the team
leaders in hitting, blocking and
defense last season, while
Nichols was in setting and
Karaszewski, Baker and Weldon
on defense.
“They have put in a lot of time
out of season and as a result we
are able to do and work on some
thing’s we have not been able to
do in the past,” Parker noted. “I
think our weak points are going
to be playing consistent and with
confidence.”

goal was to come out strong
and we did until bracket play,"
Boyne City coach Casie Parker
said. "We also played consistent
in pool play, which was another
goal.
"When it came to the playoffs
(bracket play) we lost focus and
looked tired. We started tipping a
lot instead of hitting the ball. All
in all we improved over last
year's tournament play and know
what we need to work on." Parker
added. “We had strong net play
from Hick and Myers, and
Nichols served tough all day and
did a great job of setting the girls
up.”
Charlevoix went 2-2-2 on the
day, falling to Onaway in the
quarterfinal of bracket play 20-25,
19-25.
In pool play, the Rayders went

City, 18-25, 20-25 and beat Harbor
Light 25-15, 25-14.
“The girls played hard through-
out the day and adapted well a
new group of players,” coach
Audra Randall said. “Our focus is
to build consistency in our game,
defensive strategy and endurance
for tournament play.”
Leading the Rayders on the day
were: Madeline Boss with 39 kills,
17 digs and 86% serve recieve,
while Karley Pearsall added 21
kills, seven aces, 36 digs, eight
blocks and 86% serve receive.

eight aces; Gloria Greene had 31
digs, 26 assists; Jennaca

sists and 24 digs.
“This was a good indication of
where we are with other competi-
tive teams,” Randall added. “I’m
proud of their play on Saturday
(Aug. 18), we can build off this in
a positive manner and be compet-
itive in our conference and at
tournaments.”

The 2013 Ford Taurus, the
Blue Oval’s technology and per-
formance flagship sedan, is now
certified by the EPA as the class
leader in large sedan city and
highway fuel economy. The Tau-
rus’ new 2.0-liter EcoBoost®
four-cylinder engine is certified
at 32 mpg highway – better than
the 2012 Chrysler 300, Chevrolet
Impala, Dodge Charger and Toy-
ota Avalon.
The all-new Taurus demon-
strates fuel economy isn’t lim-
ited to compact car sizes. All
three engine options for the 2013
model have now been certified
at 25 mpg or higher in EPA high-
way estimates.
“Ford understands people
want fuel-efficient vehicles but
don’t want to sacrifice power,
cargo space or convenience pref-
erences to get them,” said Raj
Nair, group vice president,
Global Product Development.
“Taurus fuel economy show-
cases Ford’s success in develop-
ing smaller yet more powerful
engines for its larger vehicles.”
Taurus offers comfort, con-
venience and technology compa-
rable to premium German sport
sedans, while beating their
diesel and hybrid variants for
fuel economy. The 2.0-liter Eco-
Boost helps Taurus deliver a 26-
mpg combined EPA rating,
higher than Mercedes-Benz E350
Bluetec diesel and Porsche
Panamera S Hybrid.
Compared to smaller vehi-
cles, Taurus 2.0-liter bests V6
models of Honda Accord and
Toyota Camry, with comparable
power. The Taurus base 3.5-liter
V6 engine also has been updated
for 2013 with twin independent
variable camshaft timing (Ti-
VCT), adding 25 horsepower
plus 1 mpg city and 2 mpg high-
way in EPA estimates – com-
pared to the previous Taurus
base V6. The 2013 Taurus SHO
(Super High Output) high-per-
formance sport sedan continues
to feature a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6
engine producing 365 horse-
power and 350 lb.-ft. of torque,
while still delivering 25 mpg on
the highway.
EcoBoost engines are funda-
mental to Ford’s strategy of pro-
viding technologically
advanced, high-output, smaller-
displacement powertrains that
deliver exceptional fuel econ-
omy and uncompromised per-
formance for millions of drivers
around the world. The 2013 Tau-
rus demonstrates to consumers
there is no need to trade power,
performance, comfort or conven-
ience to achieve savings at the
gas pump.
Each Taurus powertrain fea-
tures additional technologies to
help conserve fuel, such as:
- Low-tension front-end acces-
sory drive belt
- Smart battery management
- Aggressive deceleration fuel
shutoff
- Variable-displacement air
conditioning compressor
- Reduced friction lubricants
- Electric power-assisted steer-
ing (EPAS)
All new Taurus models now
come with EPAS, helping im-
prove steering response by
rigidly mounting the steering
rack to the subframe. The EPAS
system allows for a high degree
of tuning by Ford vehicle dy-
namics engineers to optimize
steering feel, plus it saves fuel
and provides drivers with en-
hanced feedback.
Additionally, fuel economy in
the 2013 Taurus is enhanced by a
class-exclusive Active Grille
Shutter System. Positioned be-
tween the grille opening and ra-
diator, the shutters are
controlled by the engine’s con-
trol module. Shutter slats auto-
matically open and close to
maintain the ideal operating
temperatures and optimize vehi-
cle aerodynamics.
The 2013 Taurus range is
built at Ford’s Chicago Assem-
bly facility and will begin arriv-
ing in dealerships later this
summer.

the new 2013 Ford taurus is launched in Portland, oregon as media have the first opportunity to drive the new product.

design, improved craftsmanship and sharpened driving dynamics. PHoto CoPyriGHt Ford Motor CoMPany

touch, high-quality materials inside the cabin. upgraded materials

Question & Answers About
Selling Real Estate
Just because you may feel re-
stricted by price ranges, especially
if this is your first or second home
purchase, don’t let anybody tell you
that you can’t afford to be choosy
when looking for a home to buy!
You are unique. You have desires
and needs, hopes and dreams for
your new home that are different
from your parent’s, friend’s or
coworker’s. Define these home buy-
ing parameters and writing them
down.
Location & Neighborhood
Suburbs or Country.
Pros: Generally less expensive.
Often newer. Tract homes are con-
forming. More home for the money.
Cons: More time in traffic if driv-
ing to town for work. Further away
from entertainment options cities
offer.
Urban.
Pros: Closer to many employers.
Walking distance to theaters,
restaurants, schools. Many period
homes offer more distinctiveness in
styles.
Cons: Often noisier. Higher crime
rates. More expensive.
Busy Streets.
Pros: Often homes on streets with
more traffic are thousands of dol-
lars cheaper. If noise doesn’t bother
you, don’t pass up homes on busy
streets. Drive by at different times
of the day / week to ascertain noise
levels.
Cons: These types of homes will
always sell for less than others in
the same area. If bedrooms are lo-
cated near the front of the home,
sleep may be disturbed.
Cul de sac.
Pros: Number one choice of buy-
ers with children.
Cons: Less privacy, neighbors
know more about you.
Corner lots.
Pros: Often larger lots. Fewer
neighbors. More visibility.
Cons: More traffic noise. More
vulnerable to vehicles jumping the
curb. Kids might trespass at the
corner. More sidewalk to shovel in
winter.

Exceptional Lake Charlevoix Real Estate Value
By Jim akans
This is an incredible Lake
Charlevoix real estate value.
Situated on 105 feet of lake
frontage near Whiting Park and
the marina, this Boyne City
property includes three cabins; a
main two bedroom one bath unit
and two additional single bed-
room plus bath units, and the
property also includes a de-
tached two-car garage.
This is truly the stuff north-
ern Michigan dreams are made
of. The combined living space in
these three lakeside cabins is
nearly 2,150 square feet, and
while the units are in need of
some renovation and “sprucing
up,” the potential for creating a
gorgeous year-round or vacation
retreat featuring absolutely stun-
ning waterfront views is ready
and waiting for the new owner’s
vision.
The cabins feature natural gas,
forced air heating systems, and
are built on a crawl space, and
have well water and a septic sys-
tem.
With tons of potential, this
may easily be the best Lake
Charlevoix value on the current
market. While the property is
being sold “as-is,” the listing
price for this three-cabin, 105
feet of lakefront offering is just
$199,900.
