Rayder Gridiron Club commits to $130,000 investment
Rayder Gridiron Club Invests in
Track & Field Improvements
Leading to a Potential Audio
Video Arts Program for
Charlevoix Schools
Charlevoix - The Rayder
Gridiron Club has recently
made a commitment to purchase a new scoreboard and
video/sound system for the
Charlevoix Track and Football field. The investment is
substantial, totaling nearly
$130,000 for the board,
video/sound system, and in-

stallation.
The Rayder Gridiron Club
will raise money to offset the
cost of the purchase and
maintenance of the new
equipment by selling scoreboard advertisements, organizing fundraising events, and
seeking financial donations.
The cost of the board and
sound system, including
maintenance, will be the complete responsibility of the
Rayder Gridiron Club and
will not require any financial
support from the schools.
Because the scoreboard will
require audio visual training

to operate, the Charlevoix
Schools have agreed to build
off of their already existing
speech and broadcasting
classes to develop an AVA club
or program. This will involve
students assisting in the development of broadcasting
materials, as well as the operation of the board. They are
excited about the opportunity
for their students to learn
valuable technical-broadcasting skills. Dr. Gilbert Noirot,
Rayder Gridiron Club Member, stated “This project will
benefit all of our student body
- not just those who play

sports. It has the potential of
promoting involvement, enthusiasm, and a feeling of
pride in our schools and community. Bottom line - this is a
great investment because we
are investing in all of our kids
with this project. What better
investment could we make?”
The investment in new
equipment will also make
hosting community events at
the track and field facility
more attractive and will help
promote the pride that the
community has in the
Charlevoix Public School System.

stay positive when things go badly and the
girls did.”

CENTRAL LAKE — With the
Ellsworth softball fields being unable
to host any contests this spring, Central Lake Public School has been kind
enough to allow the Lancers to use
their facilities when available.
The Lady Lancers took a pair of
Northern Lakes Conference softball
games from Wolverine, 12-2 and 15-0.
In game one, Shantel Potter and
Ashley Drenth each finished with two
hits, while Hannah Heard doubled and
Maddie Steenwyk, Amanda Veenstra,
Katelyn Sowers and Katie Lambert all
singled.
Drenth picked up the pitching win,
fanning one in the process.
In the nightcap, Drenth once again
earned the pitching win in the circle,
striking out four in the shutout victory.
Veenstra led the offense with two
hits, while Heard and Drenth both
doubled.
“We have had a couple of outdoor
practices finally and have been able to
start working on all the different coverages and the team has been steadily
improving on all three nights that we
have had games,” coach Linda Steenwyk said. “These are our first two
wins of the season, but the girls are
learning their lessons from the first
four losses of the season and really
working hard in practice to fix the errors that happened.”

Rayders sweep TC Christian,Drop pair to Gladstone
by Chris Fiel

Charlevoix 19-14,
tC Christian 5-6
TRAVERSE CITY — The
Charlevoix baseball team
picked up another pair of victories as they rolled past TC
Christian 19-5 and 14-6 in a
non-conference doubleheader
on April 28.
“After getting swept on Saturday it was nice to get two
wins, going into a tough week
in the league. I was very
happy with the way we ran the
bases,” Charlevoix coach Allen
Telgenhof said. “We had a ton
of steals and caught them not
paying attention quite a few
times.”
In the opener the Rayder
used an 11 run first inning to
set the tone and improve to 10-4
overall.
J.J. Bottomley earned the
win, allowing four hits, three
earned runs, while striking
out six and walking 10.
At the plate, Luke Klinger

and Logan Eckhardt finished
with two hits each, both doubling, while Hunter Cox,
Spencer Stewart, Nate Moon,
Andrew Michaud, Devin
Largent and Austin Putman all
singled.
In game two the Charlevoix
offense was led by Putman
with two hits, including a
home run a double, while
Largent added a pair of hits.
Moon, Bottomley, Michaud
and Cox all added one hit each,
with Moon’s being a double.
Eckhardt earned the pitching win, going four innings, allowing one earned run on
three hits, walked three and
fanned two. Moon pitched an
inning of relief, allowing two
hits and striking out three.
“We had a couple guys leave
due to ankle injuries, Luke
Klinger and J.J. Bottomley, but
our bench really played well
with Spencer Stewart getting a
two-run single, Devin Largent
continuing to stay hot and Andrew Michaud hitting well in
the clutch.”

Charlevoix 4-6, Gladstone 8-9
CHARLEVOIX — The host
Rayders fell to Gladstone 8-4
and 9-6 in a pair of non-conference baseball games on April
26 at the Charlevoix Township
Shanahan field.
In game one, following a 1-1
first inning, Gladstone scored
four times in the top of the
third before the Rayders responded with a three run fifth
to pull to within 5-4. Gladstone
then added three more in the
top of the seventh to seal the
win.
“It was a weird day for us,
playing on the junior league
field at Charlevoix Township,”
Rayder coach Allen Telgenhof
said. “It’s 250 down the lines
and 300 to dead center. Gladstone hit three three-run
homers that would have been
flyouts on our field to account
for more than half of their
runs. Still give them credit, we
could’ve done the same thing.
I thought our sophomores (Cox
and Putman) threw well but
Gladstone is a good team. I

won’t be surprised if they
make it to the regionals this
year.”
Noah Certa paced the
Charlevoix offense with a pair
of doubles, Will Telgenhof
shad an RBI single and Austin
Putman added a single.
Hunter Cox took the pitching loss for the Rayders.
In game two, Gladstone
again got on the board early,
scoring eight times in the first
two innings, before having to
hold off a valiant Rayder
comeback that came up just
shy.
Putman had a big game at
the plate, going 4-for-4 with a
double and four RBIs, while
J.J. Bottomley doubled and
Shane Sutherland and Will Telgenhof singled.
“We got the tying run to the
plate in the seventh, but couldn’t get them home,” the coach
added.
Putman took the loss on the
mound for Charlevoix.

Red Devils drop pair to Blazers, Split with TC Central
by Chris Fiel

east Jordan 4-1, kalkaska 5-15
KALKASKA — The East Jordan baseball team dropped a
pair of Lake Michigan Conference games to the Blazers, 5-4
and 15-1 on April 25.
In the opener, the Red Devils
jumped out to an early 3-1 first
inning lead and pushed that
total to a 4-1 advantage at the
conclusion of three innings,
before Kalkaska battled back
and took the lead and the win
in the bottom of the sixth, 5-4.
Dustin Hejka took the loss
for EJ, tossing three innings of
relief of starter Colin Petrie
who left the game earlier due
to elbow discomfort. The pair
combined to strike out four.
At the plate, Hejka finished
with two hits, while Tucker Alward doubled in a pair of Red
Devil runs. Herschell Sutton
and Oscar Scheier both added
a single with Sutton picking
up an RBI.
In the nightcap, East Jordan

was limited to one hit, a second inning single by Hejka.
On the mound, juniors,
Noah Raymond and Alward
pitched for the Red Devils.
“The first game loss in the
bottom of the sixth really deflated the boys and sure
charged up the Blazers leading
to the whooping we got in the
nightcap,” Red Devils coach
Tom Reid Jr. said. “The boys
need to have a very short memory and forget about this set of
games as we have three nights
of baseball each of the next
two weeks.”
East Jordan is 3-6-1 overall.

east Jordan 2-8, tC Central 1-10
TRAVERSE CITY — The Red
Devil baseball team battled to
a non-conference split with
Traverse City Central on April
24, winning the opener 2-1 before falling 10-8 in game two.
In game one, a Dustin Hejka
steal of third turned into a
Trojan throwing error that
saw Hejka come around to

score the eventual winning
run.
EJ got on top first as Jordan
Peterson scored on a third inning base hit by Tim Schut.
Hejka picked up the win for
the Red Devils, going the distance, allowing one unearned
run on four hits, walking three
and fanning one.
Noah Raymond had the
other EJ hit.
“This was an excellent team
win, and I stress team win!”
East Jordan coach Tom Reid
Jr. said. “The boys communicated very well on the field and
gritted though a couple innings where there were bases
either full or two guys on and
came out with good defensive
plays to end innings.”
“Hejka also pitched a heck of
a game tonight,” the coach
added. “Definitely a nice
bounce back after losing two to
Charlevoix Tuesday.”
Game two saw TC Central
take control early, jumping out
to an 8-0 lead through four innings, but that’s when the Red

Devils decided to make a comeback, crossing the plate three
times in the fifth.
Central responded with a
pair in the bottom half of the
inning and then had to hold off
another EJ burst as the Red
Devils scored five times in the
top of the sixth before the Trojans were able to close the
door.
“The boys showed a lot of
heart coming back in game
two,” coach Reid said. “We
came out very sluggish and
ended up battling to the end.
I’m very proud of the effort
they put in tonight!”
Schut went 3-for-4 in the
game with four RBIs, while
Tucker Alward added a single.
The Red Devils showed patience at the plate, drawing
eight walks, and once on the
basepath, they swiped eight
bases.
Oscar Scheier and Herschell
Sutton combined on the
mound for the Red Devils to
allow 11 hits, walk four and
strike out one.

The popular automotive website Edmunds.com has named
five Chrysler Group vehicles as
award winners. The 2014 Ram

shortage of utility and capability,
two very important characteristics that continue to attract customers.”
“Chrysler Group is very proud
to accept these awards from Edmunds.com,” said Doug Betts,

Question & Answers About Selling Real Estate

A Timeline for Your Summer Move
Getting prepared
to move is half the
battle
Part 1 of 5
Compliments of mike Stark,
Coldwell banker Schmidt Realtors
east Jordan. (231) 536-7700

If you’re one of the millions of
Americans who have picked the summer months to move into a new
home, you might see stress in your
future.
But if you’re organized, you can
minimize the impact moving has on
your family. Moving.com has created
a timeline with useful tips on how
families on the move can quickly get

prepared for a seamless transition to
their next home.
Moving Timeline and Tips for
Summer Moves
4 weeks from move date:
Get organized and start notifying
the right people and companies that
you’ll be moving soon and give them
a date to forward or terminate service. Start looking for licensed and
professional moving companies,
moving guides and relevant coupons.
Tip: If you’re using a professional
mover, get quotes from multiple moving companies to get the best deal
that is right for you and your needs.
Ask plenty of questions, like
whether or not they give binding
quotes and what kind of insurance is
included. Be sure to talk with them
about the different options available

with full-service moves such as packing and unpacking services and providing boxes and packing supplies.
Tip: Important documents such as
your child’s school records may need
to be accessible during your transition. Make sure to put these items
aside and make copies of any records
for yourself, in case you forget what
box they’re packed in.
Tip: Use the post office address
changer service to save time and to
ensure you’ve covered all the ground
necessary to better ensure your move
is seamless. Fill out change of address forms for creditors, doctors
and personal providers. Schedule account closings for trash removal, gardeners, pest control, etc., and
transfer utilities or other services
that’ll go with you.
