Lady Ramblers roll past Rayders
Boyne pounds out 31 hits in the twinbill

Boyne City 19-18 , Charlevoix 4-3
CHARLEVOIX — It was a
rainy and cool evening in
Charlevoix, but that would do
nothing to phase the Boyne
City softball teams hot hitting,
as the Lady Ramblers pounded
out 31 hits in the Lake Michigan Conference doubleheader,
en route to a 19-4, 18-3 sweep of
rival Charlevoix on May 2.
The two teams would test
each other in the first inning,
as both would put a three spot
up on the scoreboard in what
looked to be an offensive showcase for both squads. Boyne
would add another four runs in
the second, while the Ramblers
would blank the Rayders in the
bottom half of the inning.
The third inning however is
where the Rambler bats really
woke up, Boyne City would
blast five hard shots in the inning along with capitalizing on
three consecutive Charlevoix
errors and add an additional
eight runs to push their lead to
15-3 lead through three and a
half innings of play.
Charlevoix would score their
final run of the contest in the
bottom half of the third, and
the Ramblers would add four
more runs in the top of the
fifth inning for their final tally.
Katelyn Banner finished 3for-3 at the plate, including a
double to lead the 16 hit Rambler attack.
Paige Hornbeck added three
hits, while Hannah Hoth and
Emma Shumaker each
pounded out two hits as well.
Celena Brzezinski and Emma
Vondra both tripled, while
Brooke Fouchia, Lauren
Richards, Amber Weiss and
Jordan Weiss each added a single.
“We hit the ball well,” Rambler coach Sandy Clausen said.
“We did have a few errors, but
compensated by hitting the
ball hard.”

Shumaker picked up the win
in the circle, allowing five hits,
while fanning four and walking two.
Charlevoix got singles from
Yogi Hang, Skyler Herriman,
Kelsey Pischner, Nicole Peterson and Paige Bradley.
Hang took the pitching loss
for the Rayders, allowing 16
hits, four walks and three
strikeouts.

Annual 5K/1mile Fun
Run/Walk Fundraiser
for D.A.R.E.
The Boyne City and East Jordan
Police Departments are pleased to
announce the 2nd annual D.A.R.E.
(Drug & Alcohol Resistance Education) 5k/1 mile Fun Run/Walk
fundraising event, to be held on Saturday, May 24, 2014. Last year this
event replaced the D.A.R.E. golf
Tournament which would have celebrated its 26th anniversary this
year. The Charlevoix County
D.A.R.E. Association was looking
for an event that would be more
family friendly and involve the kids
that the D.A.R.E. program benefits.
The DARE program is presented
to 5th grade students and focuses on
drug and violence prevention
through safe and responsible decision making. The D.A.R.E. program
fosters a strong positive relationship between schools, law enforcement, and the community.
The run will begin and end in
Sunset Park (behind the Chamber of
Commerce) in Boyne City. Registration will begin at 7am and the run
will start at 8am. The course of the
race will proceed southbound on
Front St to Lakeshore Dr and along
the lake to just inside the city limits. Water, coffee and snacks will be
provided for participants.
The cost to participate in the
event is $20.00 for individuals preregistered by May 10, 2014 or $25.00
after May 10th or the morning of
the event. There is also a family
rate of $45.00 per family if registered by May 10th and $50.00 after
May 10th or at the event. For students who wear their D.A.R.E. Tshirts, the cost will be $5.00.
T-shirts will be guaranteed for the
first 100 registrants.

During the time of the race it will
be necessary to close Front St from
the city limits to Water St.

from Advance to Front St. Traffic
for Lakeshore Dr will be rerouted to
Wilson and Marshall Roads. Roads
should be reopened by 9:30am. We
want the public to be aware of this
so they have time to adjust their
schedules.
The proceeds from the fundraiser
are used to purchase educational
materials, train D.A.R.E. officers,
purchase graduation supplies and
instructional equipment used for
the D.A.R.E. program.

“Game two, we had a lot better
effort,” Meg said.

INDIAN RIVER — The Lady
Red Devil softball team fell to Inland Lakes in a non-conference
matchup on May 2.
In the opener, EJ was able to
score four times in the top of the
third to pull even after the Bulldogs scored four times in the second, but the tie wouldn’t last long
as Inland Lakes added two runs
in each of the next two innings
for an 8-4 win.
Lindsey Graham tripled to lead
the Red Devil offense, while Taylor Kroush and Kayly Zimmer
each doubled and Lindsay
Schroeder added one hit.

GAYLORD — The East Jordan
softball team ran into a tough St.
Mary, falling 6-0 and 5-2 in a pair

EJ earns split with Inland
Lakes,Drops pair to St. Mary’s

INDIAN RIVER — East Jordan recovered from an opening game loss
to salvage game two against Inland
Lakes on May 2 in a non-conference
matchup.
In the opener, the Red Devils were
limited to three hits, singles by Oscar
Scheier, Jordan Peterson and Colin
Petrie.
Junior Tucker Alward took the
loss on the mound allowing just four
hits, the big blow was a grand slam
by Bulldogs catcher Trevor Mallory,
while striking out 10.
In game two, EJ compiled 18 hits
en route to the 16-1 victory. Senior
Tim Schut blasted a pair of home
runs, singled twice and finished with
seven RBI’s to pace the offense.
Peterson and Herschell Sutton
each added two hits, including doubles and two RBI apiece; Scheier, Alward, Petrie, and Noah Raymond all

and Wyatt Crick added one hit each.
Sutton earned the pitching victory
for the Red Devils, taking a no-hitter
into the last inning only to see it broken up on an infield hit to deep
short. Sutton walked four and fin-

ished with eight K’s.
“The guys put together probably
their best night of baseball all year,”
Red Devils coach Tom Reid Jr. said.
“We lost game one but we only struck
out three times collectively as a
team. Hats off to the Bulldog defense
as they made play after play on us.
As a team, we only made two errors
all evening as well. Errors have been
our Achilles heel all season to this
point and to see two games played
pretty much mistake free was a
breath of fresh air for us. Not to
mention, the bats woke up in game
two. I’ve been waiting to see that
from the boys all year! Schut put on
a show for us and Alward and Sutton
both pitched very well.”
East Jordan is 4-9-1 overall.

GAYLORD — The Red Devils baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference baseball games to Gaylord St.
Mary on May 1, falling 13-6 in the
opener and 7-3 in game two.
In game one, the Red Devils were
only able to connect for five hits, lead
by a Colin Petrie double.
Dustin Hejka, Tim Schut, Noah
Raymond and Wyatt Crick all singled
for East Jordan.
Hejka took the pitching loss, with
relief help from Petrie.
In the nightcap, EJ was once again
limited to five hits, led by a pair of
singles and two RBI’s from Schut,
while Petrie, Raymond and Jordan
Peterson added one hit apiece.
Peterson took the loss, allowing
four earned runs, fanning four and
walking seven.
The Red Devils fall to 3-8-1 overall
on the season.

Rayders top Ramblers

Charlevoix 2-7, Boyne City 1-6
CHARLEVOIX — The Charlevoix baseball team
had to dig deep against Lake Michigan Conference
rival Boyne City, overcoming deficits in both contests, before they would earn a sweep of the Ramblers at Shanahan Field in Charlevoix on May 2.
Noah Certa hit his second double of the contest
with one out in the Charlevoix half of the fifth inning, then stole third and scored on a wild throw
from the Rambler catcher to give the Rayders a 2-1
victory.
Certa and Will Telgenhof finished with two hits
apiece, to lead Charlevoix, while Shane Sutherland
and Christian Mayte added one hit each.
Nate Moon earned the pitching win for the Rayders, allowing one earned run on three hits, walked
four and struck out seven.
In game two, Will Telgenhof scored the winning
run on a drawn in Boyne City infield throwing error
to give Charlevoix the win.
Trailing 6-5 entering the bottom of the sixth,
Charlevoix’s Certa singled to left to lead off the inning, he would move to second on a wild pitch and
would score on a Will Telgenhof double.
Moon was intentionally walked, putting runners at
first and second for the Rayders. Following a double
steal, Austin Putman was intentionally walked to
load the bases, and that’s when Sutherland hit a hard
grounder to a drawn in BC infield, plating Telgenhof
for the Charlevoix win.
“They were two exciting, well played games,”
Charlevoix coach Allen Telgenhof said. “Boyne has a
nice team and those were two quality wins for us. In
game 2, Christian Matye, a freshman making his first
start in centerfield made a game saving catch to end
the 5th inning and save two runs from scoring. It really gave us a lot of momentum and turned the game
around.”
The Rayders are 12-4 overall, 5-1 in the LMC, while
Boyne is 2-4, 1-4.

Ramblers fall to Gladiators
Boyne City 2, tC St. Francis 4
BOYNE CITY —Traverse City St. Francis and
Boyne City supplied some bonus baseball in a hotly
contested opening game in a Lake Michigan Conference battle that ultimately saw the Gladiators pull
out a 4-2 win on April 29.
Boyne City, 2-2 overall, 1-2 conference, got two hits
each from Max Cuper and Dalton Gardner.
Rambler hurler, Jordan Fair struck out five in five
innings of work for Boyne, while Derek Willis took
the loss in relief.
Game two was called due to darkness.

JV Rayders earn split
Charlevoix JV 5-3, Boyne City JV 4-3
BOYNE CITY — The Charlevoix JV baseball team
improved to 6-1 on the season with a split in Boyne
City on May 2.
In the opener, the Rayders were able to come out on
top 5-4, despite being limited to one hit, that being
courtesy of Brad Klinger.
Jordan Adkins earned the pitching win, with
Mason Louiselle recording the save for Charlevoix.
In the nightcap, the Ramblers would respond with
a 10-3 victory.
Charlevoix got hits from Adkins and Cam Alden,
while Klinger crossed the plate twice and stole a
base.

Rayders tie Blue Devils, shut out Kalkaska and Grayling

CHARLEVOIX — The Rayder
soccer team played to a 1-1 tie
against the visiting Gaylord Blue
Devils at Shanahan Field in
Charlevoix on May 2 as the high
school fields were unplayable due
to the recent weather.
The first half ended with neither team able to put anything on
the scoreboard.
Gaylord struck first in the second half as Brandi Wagner found
the back of the net off a combination of Blue Devil passes.
Later in the half, Rayder sophomore Kelsey Engstrom was
fouled in the box while attempting a breakaway scoring opportunity, resulting in Charlevoix
being awarded a penalty kick.

Way used that opportunity to nail
a kick to the lower left corner of
the net, just out of reach of the
Gaylord keeper, knotting the
score at 1-1. That would be the
final score of the contest.
“I was extremely proud of our
girls tonight,” Charlevoix coach
Pete Scholten said. “Gaylord is a
very talented Big North team.
Our girls really played a great
game. Defense came through big
tonight. Senior sweeper Kaitlin
Hinkley was lights out! She had
a great game shutting down
many of Gaylord’s opportunities.

jury and was able to play through
it and really did a great job. Junior stopper Olivia Storm also
played a tough middle for us
tonight.”
The Rayders are now 8-3-1 and
7-1 in the Lake Michigan Conference.

Charlevoix 8, Kalkaska 0
KALKASKA — The Charlevoix
girls soccer team pulled out all
their weapons as they rolled by
Kalkaska 8-0 on May 1 in a Lake
Michigan Conference contest.
The Rayders finished with 26

shots on goal.
Freshman forward Julia
Doskoch got the Rayders on the
board first at the 36:19 mark, taking a pass from forward Kelsey
Engstrom.
Less than two minutes later,
senior forward Katie Kiteley
scored an unassisted goal. Kietley then found Doskoch in the
middle, where she was able to finish the play for a 3-0 Charlevoix
lead at 32:13.
The Rayders would also get
first half goals from Grace Whitley and Leah Davis to make it 5-0
at the half.
Kiteley would open the scoring

in the second half for the Rayders, while Leah Davis and a
header by Kelsey Engstrom
would finish the scoring for
Charlevoix.
Doskoch and Kiteley added one
assist each, while Kylee Scholten
added two.
Junior keeper Gloria Greene
earned the shutout with one save
on goal as the Rayders improved
to 8-3 overall, 7-1 conference.

GRAYLING — Charlevoix’s
Leah Davis would score three

times in leading the Rayders to a
6-0 Lake Michigan Conference
soccer victory over Grayling on
April 28.
Davis scored her first goal at
24:19 of the first half on a pass
from midfielder Elizabeth Way.
The next three Charlevoix
goals would come on corner kick
passes from sophomore Kylee
Scholten. Finishing on Scholten’s
corners at 21:11 was freshman
forward Julia Doskoch, at 16:23
was Elizabeth Way and at 11:36
was sophomore forward Kelsey
Engstrom.
Davis would score her final
first half goal with 30 seconds
left, on a pass from junior forward Grace Whitley, making it 50.
Davis would add her final goal
of the night at 7:22 of the second
half off a pass from Scholten.
“Our offense did a great job
tonight using the entire field,”
Rayder coach Pete Scholten said.
“This was one of our best finishing performances. The girls had
a great first half and were able to
string together many nice combinations and complete our corner
opportunities. Grayling is a quality team. They are aggressive
and fast to the ball. I’m pleased
we were able to execute well
against them.”
Kylee Scholten’s four assists in
the game tied the school record
for assists in one game.

When the all-new 2015 GMC
Canyon launches this fall, it will
not only bring a full payload of
midsize truck segment-leading
capabilities, but segment safety
firsts including a patent-pending
child safety feature. Smaller
jump seats found in extended cab
midsize trucks may have too little lower seat cushion length to
meet many child restraint manufacturer’s recommendation to
have at least 80 percent of the
child restraint base fit on the seat
cushion.
General Motors’ engineers
have designed a patent-pending
solution for the 2015 Canyon extended cab to help keep kids in
child restraints safer in a collision. Using the rear jump seat
headrest on the passenger side of
the extended-cab Canyon, the
jump seat cushion can be extended by removing the headrest
and inserting it horizontally into
the seat base. This helps the extended-cab Canyon satisfy the
seat base recommendation of
most child restraint manufacturers.
“It’s an elegant solution that
makes efficient use of the limited
space in the rear seat in this type
of vehicle, by allowing us to
adapt the seat cushion length for
child restraint installation,” said
Eduardo Bugelli, safety performance team lead. “The additional
seat cushion length provides
more support to the child restraint, which helps to reduce the
rotation and the risk of injury in
a crash.”
In addition to this patent-pending design, the all-new Canyon
will be the first midsize truck to
offer Forward Collision Alert
and Lane Departure Warning
technology as part of the available Driver Alert Package. Forward collision alert technology
helps prevent frontal crashes by
alerting the driver when the
truck is closing in on a vehicle
ahead too quickly, giving the
driver additional time to react

In a collision, the Canyon’s allnew cab structure is made from
over 70 percent high-strength
steel to better protect its occupants. It also comes standard
with six air bags, including head
curtain side air bags that can
also reduce the risk of occupant
ejection.
Safety and convenience technology continues with a standard
rear vision camera and available
next-generation IntelliLink infotainment system. IntelliLink can
seamlessly integrate the capability of a smartphone into the vehicle so that hand-held phones
may be safely stowed while driving. Features such as smartphone voice recognition pass

through, including text message
support and Siri Eyes Free, enable the driver to be alerted to
new text messages and have
them read aloud and respond, depending on the functionality of
the smartphone). Siri Eyes Free
enables iPhone 4S and iPhone 5
users to access Siri via the steering wheel controls and check calendar entries, have text messages
read and respond to them, place
calls or call up music. Android
phone users can also use the
steering wheel controls to access
their phone’s voice recognition
features. 
The Canyon will be assembled
at GM’s Wentzville, Mo., assembly plant. GMC will continue to
work on and develop the Canyon
until the start of production in
fall 2014.
