Rayders continue to rack up LMC
wins, ranked seventh in MHSSCA
by Chris Fiel

Charlevoix 1, Elk rapids 0
CHARLEVOIX — The Lady
Rayders continue to impress as
they moved into the Michigan
High School Soccer Coaches Association rankings at number
seven this week, and they did not
disappoint as they downed an always tough Elk Rapids squad 1-0
on May 12.
Charlevoix scored the only goal
of the contest 12 minutes into the
first half as sophomore midfielder Kylee Scholten crossed a
ball to senior forward Katie Kiteley who was able to finish and
find the back of the Elk Rapids
net.
Rayder junior keeper Gloria
Greene finished with nine saves
in goal to earn the shutout.
“This was a big win for us
tonight. Elk Rapids is a really
tough opponent,” Charlevoix
coach Pete Scholten said. “They
are the kind of team that is fast to
the ball and never gives up.
Tonight’s game was a battle right
down to the last seconds of the
game.”
With the win, Charlevoix improves to 12-5-1 overall and is 10-1
in the LMC.
PETOSKEY — The Lady Rayder Soccer team played to a 1-2
finish at the Petoskey Soccer Invitational on May 10.
In the opener, Charlevoix defeated the host Lady Northmen
by a score of 1-0. The win marks
only the second time in Rayder
history that they have beat
Petoskey.
“This was a huge win for our
girls,” Charlevoix coach Pete
Scholten said. “Petoskey is and
will always be a quality soccer
team.”
Following a scoreless first half,
the Rayders got on the board at

the 15:20 mark of the second half
as junior midfielder Leah Davis
took a pass from defender Shelby
Robinson and found the back of
the net.
“We were minus two starters
today due to illness and injury.
Today was a great opportunity
for others to step up,” coach
Scholten added. “Senior forward
Katie Kiteley did a great job dropping back into our midfield
today.”
Junior keeper Gloria Greene
finished with nine saves on goal,
while the Rayder attack took 14
shots on the Northmen.
In game two Charlevoix played
a fresh Ann Arbor Skyline. The
Skyline scored in the first half
bringing the halftime score to 1-0.
The Skyline would add two more
goals in the second half, the third
coming with only six seconds left
in the game.
Keeper Gloria Greene had nine
saves on goal against the Skyline.
In game three, the Rayders
would find a familiar foe in the
form of Gaylord, a team the Rayders played to a 1-1 draw with earlier this season.
The Blue Devils took advantage
of a corner kick and finished for
the only goal of the game late in
the first half.
The Rayder attack took nine
shots on goal while keeper Gloria
Greene finished with17 saves in
the game.
“Three games in one day are
physically draining for all teams.
It’s tough to play three quality
teams all in one day,” coach
Scholten noted. “I was really impressed with our girls ability to
keep a high level of play throughout the day.”
Charlevoix improves to 11-5-1
and is 9-1 in the LMC.

Erin Baker, Ann Durbin, Abby
Gardner, Hannah Sterling and
Alexis Bielas with solid play for
the Rambers.
Mallary Karaszewski had 12
saves in goal for Boyne.
“Boyne played a great game,”
Charlevoix coach Pete Scholten
said. “We had several opportunities but had trouble finishing the
ball. I felt we picked up the pace
the second half and improved our
play.”
The Rayders improve to 10-3-1
overall and 9-1 in the LMC with
the win, while the Ramblers fall
to 3-7 overall, 2-6 LMC.

Charlevoix 4, TC Liberty 0

picked up a big Lake Michigan

Confernece win on May 6, beating
the Liberty with a final score of
4-0.
Both the Rayders and the Liberty entered the contest with only
one loss in the LMC.
Charlevoix got things going
early as they scored in the first
six minutes of the game from a
throw in near the 18 from sophomore midfielder Kylee Scholten
to junior midfielder Leah Davis.
The Rayders would add a second goal late in the first half off
from a pass from the corner from
junior midfielder Elizabeth Way
to sophomore forward Kelsey Engstrom, giving Charlevoix a 2-0
lead at halftime.
Charlevoix would find the back
of the net again just under 10
minutes into the second half on
another throw in from Scholten
to Davis, and the Rayder’s final
goal came with only five seconds
left in the game off from a direct
kick from Leah Davis to Kelsey
Engstrom who completed the goal
in front of the Liberty net.
Charlevoix took 24 shots on
goal, while Rayder keeper Gloria
Greene finished with 11 save to
earn the shutout.
“The girls played great soccer
tonight,” Charlevoix coach Pete
Scholten said. “We had good con-

trol in the middle and distributed
well to both sides of the field.
They put together several great
combinations that created a lot of
opportunities for us. We were
fast to the ball and were able to
keep the ball in their end.”
The Rayders are now 9-3-1 and
8-1 in the LMC.

Pick up key conference wins over Grayling
by Chris Fiel

boyne City 1-10, Inland Lakes 3-0
BOYNE CITY — The Lady
Ramblers have been on quite a
roll lately, but they ran into a
tough pitcher in the opener before they responded with their
trademark offense in the nightcap in splitting a non-conference
doubleheader with Inland Lakes
on May 8.
In the opener, Inland Lakes
pitcher Cloe Mallory limited the
Rambler to a pair of hits, a deep
double to center by Emma Shumaker and a single from Rainy
McCune as she struck out 13 and
walked three.
Shumaker took the loss on the
mound allowing three runs (one
earned), on seven hits, struck out
six and walked one. The Bulldogs
were aided by a pair of throwing
errors in their two run third.
“We couldn’t get our bats going
against their pitching in the first
game,” Boyne City coach Sandy
Clausen said. “The second game
we were much better at the
plate.”
In game two, BC got a no-hit
pitching effort from McCune and
two-run home run off the bat of
Paige Hornbeck in leading the
Ramblers to a 10-0 win in five innings.
McCune struck out six and
walked four in the victory.
Hornbeck added a pair of singles to her long ball, in leading
the Rambler offense. McCune
had two hits, including a double,

Amber Weiss and Katria Wilkins
both singled.
The Lady Ramblers are now 8-4

up two RBI’s.

“This was a very exciting
game that was full of action,”
veteran Red Devil coach Meg
Kitson said. “The last play of
the game was a relay out at the
plate. It was amazing. Our girls
played with a lot of ambition all
day.”
In the nightcap, following a 33 score after the first inning, the
Lady Ironmen opened up the
contest with a pair of five run
innings in both the second and
fifth innings.
Outman took the pitching loss
in relief of Schroeder. Outman
allowed four hits, struck out five
and walked five, while

Charlevoix 6-16, suttons bay 3-5
SUTTONS BAY — The
Charlevoix softball season has
had its share of ups and downs
this season, but it would be all
positive against the host Norsemen as the Lady Rayders went to
work and pulled out a pair of
non-conferences victories, 6-3,
16-5 on May 8.
In gme one, Charlevoix Yogi
Hang earned the win, going the
distance, allowing seven hits,

the Rayders pounded out lead by
Archey with four, while Hang
homered and doubled among her
three hits. Skyler Herriman,
Gray, Pischner and Bradley each
added three hits apiece, with one
of Pischner’s being a triple.

once again, allowing five runs on
nine hits and striking out nine
as Charlevoix improved to 7-7 on
the season.

Ellsworth 0-5, alanson 1-6
ALANSON — The Lady
Lancers gave it all they had despite being down a few players
and nearly came away with a
pair of Northern Lakes Conference victories, before falling to
Alanson 1-0 and 6-5 on May 6.
In the opener, Katie Lambert
went 3-for-3 at the plate and
Molly Vandersilk added a pair of
hits to lead Ellsworth.
Also for the Lancers, Shantel
Potter, Ashley Drenth, Leah
Swenson and Sharon Dhillion all
finished with one hit apiece.
Drenth took the loss in the circle.
“We were missing a few key
players tonight so girls had to
adjust and play positions that
they were not as familiar with,
but overall they did a great job
adjusting,” Lancer coach Linda
Steenwyk said. “We started to
hit the ball better tonight, unfortunately a few errors at key

times in the game made us unable to come up with the two key
wins we wanted tonight. The
girls learned some things
tonight that will aid them as we
continue to improve as we move
through the season.”
In the nightcap, Maddie Steenwyk finished with a pair of doubled and a sacrafice bunt in
leading the Lady Lancer offense.
Also for Ellsworth, Katelyn
Sowers, Swenson and Dhillion
each finished with two hits,
while Drenth, Lambert, and
Molly VanderSlik each singled.

two as well.
“Ashley Drenth pitched two
great games and Amanda Veenstra had two catches (in center),
one that she hung on to as it took
her to the ground,” coach Steenwyk added.

Roll past Rams in LMC twinbill
by Chris Fiel

CARO — The Radyer
baseball team improved to
15-5 on the season, defeating host Caro, 10-6 in the
opener before falling in the
championship contest to
Cass City, 11-8 on May 10.
The loss to Cass City
snapped a seven game winning streak that the Rayders have strung together
over the last week and a
half.
In the opener, both teams
pushed solo runs across in
each of the first two innings before Caro used a
three run third inning to
take a 5-2 lead, only to see
the Rayders respond with
another run in the bottom
half of the inning.
In the fourth, Caro would
add their final run of the
contest to go up 6-3.
Charlevoix would respond
by scoring a pair of runs in
each of the fourth and fifth
innings and add three
more in the sixth inning
for the 10-6 victory.
The Charlevoix offense
was led by Will Telgenhof
with four hits and three
RBI’s, while
Christian Matye added
two hits and an RBI.
Hunter Cox, Luke Klinger,
Andrew Michaud and

while Noah Certa and Nate
Moon also finished with
one RBI each.
Moon took the mound for
the Rayders, delivering a
solid six innings of work,
allowing six hits, fanning
seven and walking three in
picking up the win.
In the championship
game against Cass City,
Charlevoix spotted the Red
Hawks an early lead, only
to battle back and score a
pair of runs themselves in
the third.
Cass City would then deliver a pair of five run innings in both the fourth
and fifth innings for what
seemed like a big lead, only
to see the Rayders bounce
back with a four run sixth
of their own and added a
solo run in their half of
the seventh, coming up
short.

“We hit well all day but
played a tough squad in
Cass City,” Rayder coach
Allen Telgenhof said.
“They had two huge innings where we couldn’t
get the third out. Still, we
battled back and had the
bases loaded with one out
in the seventh but couldn’t
get the clutch hit.”
The offense was led by
Certa and KeNen Borths
with two hits each in the
game, while Telgenhof,
Moon, Cox and Matye
added one hit each.
Certa and Telgenhof also
had two RBI, while Moon
and Borths each added one.
The Rayders sent Cox to
the mound, and Hunter allowed six earned runs on
six hits, with eight walks,
while striking out five in
four innings of work. He
would be relieved by
Borths and Moon, who
combined to grant five hits
and walk two.
“We like to travel downstate to see different competition, so this will be
good for us, despite the
loss,” Telgenhof added.

10-run fourth to put the
game out of reach despite
the Rams scoring a run in
the bottom of the inning
and added a pair of runs in
the bottom of the fifth as
well.
J.J. Bottomley tossed all
five innings of the mercyrule shortened contest, allowing three runs on six
hits, striking out three and
walking none for the victory.
Hunter Cox paced the offense with three hits, while
Will Telgenhof, Austin Putman and Bottomley added
two apiece, as Putman and
Bottomley had doubles

among their hits.
Nate Moon, Andrew
Michaud, Spencer Stewart,
Devin Largent and Christian Matye all added one
hit each, with Largent and
Matye’s doubles.
In the nightcap, the Rayders scored twice in the
