Assistant Professor of Chemical Education 9-month Tenure-Track Chemistry and Biochemistry South Dakota State University

Position: The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at South Dakota State University is expanding its presence in the teaching and learning of undergraduate science with two tenure-track 9-month Assistant Professor openings in chemistry education. These positions represent a continued University and Departmental commitment to educating the next generation of scientists and science professionals. The new faculty members will participate in a variety of collaborations and will be expected to build instructional and educational research partnerships across the natural sciences and mathematics. SDSU is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to and/or coordinate course offerings that address the experiences of underrepresented minorities in organizations. Availability: Positions are available beginning in August 2013. Posting is open until filled, with full consideration given to applications received by February 15, 2013. Description: The successful candidates will be expected to provide effective instruction and advising to a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students and establish an extramurally funded, nationally recognized research program in chemical education. While the instructional area is open, the Department is particularly interested in applicants whose teaching and education research interests are in either organic chemistry or general/inorganic chemistry. Opportunities also exist for teaching upper division undergraduate and graduate courses in the applicant’s area of specialization. Other responsibilities include continuing development of professional capabilities and scholarly activities, curriculum development, participation in department, college and university governance, and professional service. Required Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in chemical education or closely related field, prior experience teaching chemistry at the college level and research/scholarship interests in chemical education or interdisciplinary science education; demonstrated potential to establish an independent, externally funded research program, demonstrated potential to achieve teaching excellence, effective oral and written communication skills, and effective interpersonal skills. Desired Qualifications: Post-doctoral or equivalent experience, prior experience with federal research grants, teaching and education research interests in either organic chemistry or general/inorganic chemistry. Salary: Commensurate with qualifications. Location and Facilities: South Dakota State University, the state’s land grant institution, is located in Brookings, a city of approximately 22,100 inhabitants located in eastern South Dakota. The institution enrolls ~12,500 students, ~10% of which are graduate students. The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is housed in Avera Health Sciences Center, a new $60M office/classroom building. Research space is provided in the newly remodeled Avera Health Sciences Annex. The Department has excellent research facilities in selected areas including emphases on physical biochemistry,

medicinal chemistry, environmental chemistry, and chemical education. Current faculty member maintain active collaborations across campus departments and with partnering institutions. There are currently 16 faculty members, 7 instructors, 7 technical and support staff, 65 graduate students, 12 post-doctoral research associates, and approximately 180 undergraduates in 3 majors.
