Christmas around the world
On Christmas morning, it is beliebed boys and girls around the world will waken erly and run
excitedly downstair to see what Santa Claus has left for they, however, children around the
world celebrate the Chrismas holidays in many different ways.
In Germany, the 6st of December is a especial day: On the evening of December 5th you put
your cleaned (big) boots outside the house in front of the door (or inside). The peoples also
put a plate there or on the windowsill. The bread in the plate is for the white horse of
Santa Claus . In the morning you see that Santa Claus really was at your house and put nice
things into the boots or plates, e.g., all kinds of nuts, sweets, chocolate, small presents...
In Italy, January 6th are a day long-awaited by many children: The 6th of January is the
day on when the three Wise Men arrive at the Bethlehem cave in which kid Jesus is and
gave him gold, incense and myrrh. For this reason in Italy children receive presents from
"Befana," a god old witch who comes into their homes through the chimney.
In Sweden, December 13th is a special day: them celebrate Saint Lucy's Day which is now
celebrate by a girl dressing in an white dress with a red belt round her waist and a crown of
candles on her head. Another popular and important that many Swedes does on Christmas
Eve afternoon is to watching Donald Duck! Every year, since 1959, at 3.00pm on Christmas
Eve, the TV station TV1 shows the Disney special "From All of Us to All of You". About 40
to 50% of the Swedish population stop to watch it!
Boxing Day, December 26, are a public holiday in Australia. The day probably take its name
from the fact that on the day after Christmas in Britain the charity boxes which had been
placed in the churches over the Christmas period were open. The contents was distributed
to the poor. On the same day, apprentices and servants break open small boxes in which
their masters had deposited small sums of money.
