2015 2016 Clinical
Clearance Guide
For the protection of yourself and patients, there are a number of requirements that need to be completed prior to
participation in clinical courses. Each semester has a date by which all requirements must be completed in order to be
eligible to participate in a clinical course during that semester.

Final Clearance Dates:

Fall 2015: July 31, 2015

Spring 2016: November 30, 2015

Clinical clearance is managed by the School of Nursing’s O ce of Student Services in Ackerson Hall on the Newark
Campus. While school is in session, there is also a representative of Student Services in our New Brunswick building
from Tuesday to Thursday. If you ever have questions please always feel free to walk in to the O ce of Student Services
or contact Mr. Gill directly at:
Mr. Jameson Gill, Director of Student Services Operations
Rutgers School of Nursing—Ackerson Hall, Room 102, 180 University Avenue, Newark, NJ 07102
Phone: 973 972 6693 Fax: 973 353 1189 Email: [email protected]

Clinical Clearance Requirements
Your clearance requirements consist of four parts: Health and Immunization, Criminal Background Check,
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training, and HIPAA Training. Health and Immunization requirements should
be completed immediately upon admission, while the remainder of the requirements must be completed according to
the final clearance dates listed above. Some requirements expire, so you need ensure you are cleared every semester.

Criminal Background Check and Urine Drug Screening
Required: Clear Background Check

Timeframe: 1 2 Weeks

All students are required to have a criminal background check through CertifiedBackground prior to being allowed to
participate
in
clinicals.
To
order
your
criminal
background
check,
go
to
h ps://www.certifiedbackground.com, enter “RU38” as your program code, click “Go”, and then complete all required
information. To order your urine drug screening, repeat the process using “RU38dt” as the program code. Your results
will be provided to the O ce of Student Services directly.

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Training
Required: Copy of passing score report from HIPAA test on blackboard
Timeframe: One hour
All students are required to complete HIPAA training prior to participating in clinicals. An informational video, a
PowerPoint presentation and a test on HIPAA rules and regulations can be found on blackboard at h p://
blackboard.newark.rutgers.edu/ under the “College of Nursing UG Student Information” section.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training
Required: Copy of CPR card valid during your clinical course
Timeframe: One day
All students that participate in clinical courses are required to have a currently valid American Heart Association “BLS
for Healthcare Providers” CPR certification. These certifications can be completed at a variety of training centers and are
valid for 2 years from the day that you pass your course. A copy of your CPR card (front and back) should be submi ed
as a part of your clearance requirements.

Professional Liability Insurance
Required: Copy of “Certificate of Insurance” valid during your clinical course
Timeframe: 1 2 Weeks
Important: This is not health insurance. Every student needs to have professional liability insurance with a
minimum coverage of $1 million per occurrence and $6 million aggregate. You need “Registered Nurse
Student” liability insurance. This insurance can be purchased from any vendor of your choice, and the
university does not recommend any specific vendor. That said, many students choose to use NSO (Nurses
Service Organization) h p://www.nso.com to purchase their professional liability insurance.
