Closing Speech
To our SMS President, Dr. Nelia A. Barlis, to our SMS Vice President, Mr. Bobby Barlis,
to our SMS Directress, Mrs. Rosario T. Argana, to our High School Coordinator, Ms. Carmi
Doromal, to our guest speaker, Dr. Desiree Argana, to all the graduates, faculty and staffs, to our
dear parents and relatives, friends, ladies and gentlemen, good evening.
Four years ago, we stepped into the halls of this institution as high school students. It was
four years ago when we graduated from grade school. And after tonight, we will come out of this
institution as high school graduates. Time flies, isn’t?
As I am speaking to you right now, I am feeling anxious, glad, and at the same time, sad;
anxious because I am speaking to all of you right now, glad because all our hardships: sleepless
nights, performance tasks, long quizzes, and clearance, will pay off tonight, and lastly, sad
because after this night, we will part ways.
According to Pythagoras, choices are the hinges of destiny. Where there is no decision,
there is no life (JJ Dewey). In our everyday lives, we make different choices; whether to get up
or not in the morning, to eat or not to eat, to learn or not to learn, to go to school or not, to be
good or bad, and a lot more. And with these choices, we make up our own fate. With these
choices, we make differences. With these choices, we shape our world. Now, college will require
a lot of choices. And your first choice is the most important; choosing your career path. That’s
the good thing about college: you can match your skills and interests with your future. Maybe a
lot here are still confused of what course to take. Upon choosing your path, listen to your heart,
because your heart will lead you to happiness and success. Never fear to decide because though
sometimes bad decisions give us bad experiences, we can always learn something from them.
According to Edgar Watson Howe, it is hard to convince a high-school student that he
will encounter a lot of problems more difficult than those of algebra and geometry. If somebody
here thinks that you have overcome your hardest struggle in life, you’re wrong. You just have
finished the easiest part of your life. Out there, is a different world; new friends, new
experiences, new places, terror professors, and peer pressure. Competitions are everywhere.
Getting to the top is hard. As the famous saying goes, compete not with others, but with yourself.
You don’t need to be better than others, you need to better yourself. In the first place, it is you
who matter.
After some time, two years, four years, six years or longer, we will see each other again;
some will have finished college and some will have not, some may have become parents, some
may have become one among famous professionals. As Norman Lear said, "Life is made up of
small pleasures. Happiness is made up of those tiny successes. The big ones come too
infrequently. And if you don't collect all these tiny successes, the big ones don't really mean
anything." Wherever our decisions take us, I hope everybody would find happiness in their lives.
I hope to see everybody not disappointing their parents. Let’s not waste the sacrifices of our
parents because they chose to sacrifice for us, rather than for themselves.
This is another milestone of our lives. And without the people behind our backs, we
wouldn’t be able to arrive to this point. I wouldn’t arrive to this point without God, who
strengthened me and never left me on my battles. I would like to thank my parents, for their
never ending support and guidance, to this institution that molded me to the person I am now and
for giving me this opportunity to express myself, to my teachers who acted as our second parents
and friends as well, to the SMS SBO and to our adviser, Sir Cyr, to the SMS Choir and to our
conductor, Ms. Gem, to my adviser, Ms Dhel, to my section, Sycamore, to my batch mates, to
my friends, and to Wakae, who made my high school experience awesome, thank you for being
part of my high school life. I dedicate all my achievements to God and to my parents who are my
inspiration in all my endeavours.
Now, I am challenging everyone. Graduate college, pursue your dreams, find happiness,
and don’t disappoint your parents. Reach success without stepping on other people; instead,
reach success with both your feet on the ground. That’s all, good luck and congratulations
graduates. Thank you.
