Comments on Business Management
I strongly disagree. I just got offered a job exactly because I studied a particular field (African politics) and because I can speak French (which I had to study for). You can either speak French or you can't...and you need to learn how to do it. Also...studying for a degree opens up your mind and develops your critical thinking and analytical skills. Skills that are an asset to any organisation. It also teaches you how to ask in-depth questions about ethical matters and things that will have an impact on the long-term profitability of your company. All things that most people without a degree would not even know about, let alone think about. So to avoid having to re-invent the wheel, it helps to get someone with knowledge into your team. Also...you learn things in business management that is more than 500 years of accumulated business knowledge. Things that no matter how smart you are, you would never even think about or come up with, but which will help you to run your business more effectively and more efficiently. It keeps you from having to make the same mistakes as others have years ago. Studying also brings you into contact with some of the most brilliant minds in the history of the human species through their ideas. It is a wonderfully enriching experience and it is usually people who have not studied themselves who can't see the benefits and advantages of it. It helps you to reason and to learn to argue well and to use your brain. All valuable assets to any organisation. Some jobs, you can only get with a degree and others you get better paid. The most valuable thing you gain, however, is the intrinsic value of increasing your knowledge and improving your mind. But you have to be smart to see that.
