2014 Downriver Senior Olympics... and More!
Message from Mayor Burcroff
Way to go, Romulus seniors!
Our seniors continue to make us all proud. Those
representing the Romulus Senior Center in the
annual Downriver Senior Olympics were an
impressive bunch. They were enthusiastic, showed
sportsmanship and were very competitive.
Participation from Romulus more than doubled this
year! Our team earned medals and played hard. I’m
writing this during Olympics week, so we don’t yet
have the total medal count, but rest assured that
your city is feeling pride.
As we head into August, I’m also proud to say that
parks recreation options for residents of all ages
have returned. As I said in this space last month,
Elmer Johnson Community Park has reopened and
is being heavily used by our community. We have
worked toward reopening a couple more parks, too.
Recreation programming has provided activities for
our youth and adults. Children – perhaps including
some of your grandchildren – are enjoying the
summer recreation elementary daytime program,
craft classes, cheerleading, softball and soccer.
Adults have been playing softball and volleyball.
We’ve offered golf lessons at Gateway as well. The
crowds for the “Sounds in Downtown” summer
music series have had appreciative crowds at
Romulus Historical Park. And it won’t be long until
the Pumpkin Festival and Parade of Lights return
September 19-21 for everyone’s enjoyment.
Of course, activities at the Romulus Senior Center
continue to be at an all-time high. Director Rose
Swidan and her staff are implementing even more
programs in August. If you have an idea for our
center, please see Rose. She is always open to good
ideas!
Meanwhile, the Romulus Farmers Market
continues to be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Wednesdays through September 24 in the City Hall
parking lot, 11111 Wayne Road. Market Manager
Merrie Druyor is always accepting new “farmers”
or vendors who offer produce, other goods and
services.
And those who sign up with Senior Project FRESH
can get coupons for Michigan-grown produce and
nutrition at farmers markets and roadside stands.
There’s more information about Project FRESH in
this newsletter.
Have a great August!
