HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY BASED LEARNING MATERIAL
Welcome to the module in Prepare Pipes for Installation. This module contains training materials and activities for you to complete.
The unit of competency “Preparing Pipes for Installation” contains knowledge, skills and attitudes required for Plumbing. It is one of the core
competencies at National Certificate level II (NCII). You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete each learning outcome of the module. In each learning outcome are Information Sheets and Instruction Sheets (Reference Materials for further reading to help you better understand the required activities.) Follow these activities on your own and answer the self-check at the end of each learning outcome. You may remove a blank answer sheet at the end of each module (or get one from your facilitator/trainer) to write your answers for each self-check. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your facilitator for assistance. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) You may already have some or most of the knowledge and skills covered in this learner’s guide because you have: been working for some time Already completed training in this area.
If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a particular skill or skills, talk to him/her about having them formally recognized so you don’t have to do the same training again. If you have a qualification or Certificate of Competency from previous training, show it to your trainer. If the skills you acquired are still current and relevant to the unit/s of competency they may become part of the evidence you can present for RPL. Information Sheet No. 1.1-1a Plumbing Blue Print Reading
Learning Objectives: After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to explain, identify standard plumbing symbols, abbreviation. INTRODUCTION In addition to practical training with tools and materials, a plumber must learn to the plumbing symbols and abbreviation. It is difficult for a plumber to make any interpretation of a plan if he/ she do not know the plumbing symbols and abbreviation indicated in the plumbing layout or print and specifications SYMBOLS AND ABBREVIATIONS A common set of symbols are used on architectural prints to represent materials, building objects, and various dimensions and locations. Piping symbols are used by architect and mechanical engineers on prints to represent plumbing fixtures and piping systems, as well as pipe fittings and valves used to construct plumbing systems. A print is a drawing showing a building structure and all of its components. Prints are also referred to as blueprints or working drawings. Specifications are written information that supplements the prints and provides additional details that could not be shown on the prints or that require additional description such as information on legal responsibilities, insurance, quality of workmanship, and other necessary details such as brands and types of plumbing fixtures and equipment. See figure 1.1

INTRODUCTION: In this information sheet contains OH& S on handling both hand and power tools. One’s a plumber practice safe handling of tools he/ she can avoid accident, injury which may result into death or damage to property. On the other hand if the plumber did not practice such safety handling of tools it may have a reverse result. HAND AND POWER TOOL SAFETY Plumbing tools are classified into two; the HAND TOOLS and the POWER TOOLS. Differences between hand and power tools: – Hand tools have no power source, other than the physical force applied by the user. Hand tools include anything from axes to hammers, and screwdrivers to wrenches Power Tools require a non-human power source to function properly--e.g. External (electricity, compressed air, etc.) or Internal (battery pack, internal combustion engine, etc.).

It may cause great loss of material and back job. 3. What if you used PVC pipes instead of steel pipe passing thru the structural portion of the building? Answer: Knowing the situation, inform your immediate superior and ask him to request for an approval of materials to be used for that particular location. 4. What would you do if the tools needed for the task is not available or not functional. Answer: Report to your superior about the situation and request for the needed tools required for the specific task or job. 5. Why you should not let the tools merge with the other tools? Answer: It may result to damage of tools. It is difficult to secure needed tools within given time. It may cause accident while searching for the tools needed.

Definition of Terms
Conveying It refers to flow or movement and the process of supplying water to the building. Fittings Device fastened to the end of pipes to make connections between individual pipes. Drainage System System include, all piping within the public or private premises that conveys sewage, rainwater or other liquid waste, to a legal point of disposal. Plumbing Fixtures Are installed receptacles, devices, or appliances which are supplied with water, or which receives or discharge liquid waste to a drainage system. Plumbing System System includes the water supply distribution pipes, plumbing fixtures and traps; soil, waste, and vent pipes. Waste pipe Is a pipe that conveys liquid waste from fixture that is free of fecal matter. Water Service Pipe Is the pipe from the water main or other source of water supply to the building served. Water supply system The water supply of a building or premises consist of the water service pipes, the water distributing pipes, and all necessary connecting pipes, fittings, control valves and all appurtenances in or adjacent to the building or premise.
