COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

COURSE

Animation Systems Studio 1

ANIM 50025
Code:

Hours / wk: 12

This is a comprehensive course that presents concepts and techniques for designing and producing three-dimensional computer animation in a graphics workstation studio environment. Students will start with core concepts in modeling, texturing, lighting and rendering, then move to advanced topics in modeling, rigging and animation tools. Higher-level topics include character setup, hierarchical structures and inverse kinematics. Along with projects specific to this course, students work on projects in conjunction with the Animation Design course.

COURSE

Animation Methodology 1

ANIM 52348
Code:

Hours / wk: 3

Applying the understanding of onscreen timing as well as principles of animation to computer generated animation is essential for convincing object and character performance. This course covers the principles of animation and the physics of motion, while encouraging a sense of personality and character through a specific series of applied computer animation exercises and projects. Each assignment builds on the previous principles learned. The animator's vocabulary of motion is developed through interactive lecture, discussion, demonstration and studio exercises in motion and performance principles.

COURSE

Computer Animation Technology 1

SYST 51220
Code:

Hours / wk: 3

Rapid change and development is a characteristic of the Computer In this course students focus on hardware and software concepts and protocols that constitute an industry professional's toolbox. This course lays the foundations of technical knowledge that students draw upon as an integral part of the Computer Animation process. Computer "literacy" is essential for participation in this industry and the course begins with the development of the students' vocabulary of fundamental computer terminology and concepts. From this base the course proceeds to introduce the current industry technology. Emphasis is placed on how these specific tools work and why, what they can do for the computer animator, their problems and possible future solutions. Some historical background will be covered to provide a context for the rate of technological change the students will experience in the industry.

COURSE

In this, part one of two Applications courses, presentations focus on the variety of professional specializations within the industry and how they relate to the multiple facets of students' own project development during this semester. Students receive information on possible areas of employment, which helps them determine the direction of their independent work in the second semester.

COURSE

Animation Design

ANIM 56976
Code:

Hours / wk: 3

In this course students focus on the principles of visual and cinematic language, design problem solving and practical approaches to design methodologies specific to computer animation applications. Through a project basis, the issues of composition, continuity, content, style and the role that technology plays in the design process will be explored. Students will employ the practical aspects of design, including art direction, storyboard and animatic presentation to animation projects.

COURSE

Animation Systems Studio 2

ANIM 54998
Code:

Hours / wk: 9

This is the second of two Systems Lab courses that presents advanced concepts and techniques for designing and producing three-dimensional computer animation. In this term students will investigate theoretical and practical applications to particle, dynamic simulation and cloth systems. Students are introduced to and create hair, fur, cloth and facial animation systems. Guided by the professor as mentor, students also devote a portion of the term toward independent studio practice for research and production geared specifically for their Directed Project work in this semester.

COURSE

Computer Animation Methodology 2

ANIM 57001
Code:

Hours / wk: 3

This is a course where students further explore the principles of animation. In this section the students are introduced to acting and lip sync concepts. Code:

Hours / wk: 3

Students are introduced to a range of industries and representative companies that utilize computer animation today, in this, the second of two Applications courses. This course is delivered as a series of guest lectures and workshops. Delivered as a series of guest lectures and workshops, presentations are made by companies that utilize computer animation for feature film and film effects, television series, advertising, broadcast design, computer games, medical/scientific visualization as well as architectural and product visualization. As well as being introduced to potential directions for employment and developing industry contact lists, presentations are given on the ¿role of the producer¿, portfolio development, resume writing and small business practice.

COURSE

Directed Projects

ANIM 50488
Code:

Hours / wk: 3

In this course students will complete a major animated portfolio piece, which encompasses many of the methodologies and techniques learned in the first semester. Storyboards, animatics, layouts, shot breakdowns, production schedules, etc., will all be an integral component of the production process. There will be regular mentoring and problem solving sessions with the instructor and student on an individual basis. Students will take part in weekly group critiques where their peers can view, comment and forward helpful suggestions on the work in progress.
