Cover Crop Walk and Field Day planned
On August 24, OSU Extension and the Grand Lake/Wabash Watershed Alliance are sponsoring a Cover Crop Walk at the Mercer Water Fowl Area, 6115 State Route 703, Celina. There is no fee for the event and no pre-registration required. Producers are welcome to attend all three sessions or stop by for a few minutes to check out the cover crop plots. The Cover Crop Walk begins at 4 p.m. with Nick Renner discussing a new machine built to plant and mulch cover crop seeds into standing corn. This machine will also allow your corn to dry down faster. There will also be a machine demonstration. At 6 p.m., Dave Brandt from Fairfield County will give a hands-on demonstration on setting up a drill to plant cover crops. Brandt has experience with many different cover crops on his farm. He specializes in oilseed radishes. At 7 p.m., Jim Hoorman will review the cover crop plots. Hoorman is currently an educator in Mercer County focusing on water quality and cover crops. On September 7, a Nutrient Management Field Day will be held. This field day is open to all farmers and there is no cost or preregistration. Continuing Education Credits will be provided for Certified Livestock Managers. The first 100 attendees will receive a CD with nutrient management tools and information. This event will be held on VersaillesYorkshire Road north of State Route 185, at Wuebker Farms, Versailles, Ohio. The Ohio Department of Development wants to remind Ohioans who are elderly or have health problems that funding to assist eligible households with summer cooling costs through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) Summer Crisis Program is available through August 31. “With temperatures consistently in the 90s this week, I want to take this opportunity to encourage eligible families to apply for the Summer Crisis Program,” said Lisa PattMcDaniel, Director. “The program is designed to keep our most vulnerable citizens safe and healthy during these hot summer months, and we don’t want people to miss out on the help available to them.” So far this summer, 34,138 households have been approved for assistance through the Summer Crisis Program. Out of $6.4 million available, $4.9 million has been obligated to assist households with their cooling bills. The HEAP Summer Crisis Program provides assistance to low-income households with an elderly member (60 years or older), or a member of the household with documentation from a physician that cooling assistance is necessary. This includes people with breathing problems such as lung disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), or asthma. These households are eligible for electric bill payment assistance of up to $175. For many eligible customers, $175 will cover at least one month’s electric bill. Residents are encouraged to work with their local community action agencies, job and family services, and faith-based organizations for additional assistance. The gross income of eligible households must be at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. For more information, call the toll-free HEAP hotline at (800) 282-0880 or visit www.energyhelp. ohio.gov.

Biblical art exhibit on display at the St. Charles Center
An exhibit of art from the first illuminated bible to be published in 500 years has arrived at the St. Charles Center in Carthagena. St. Charles, 2860 US 127, Carthagena, will host the exhibit of art from The Saint John’s Bible through September 10. The 25 prints are on exhibit in the Gaspar Room. The show opened August 22, with a scripture service led by Fr. James Seibert, C.PP.S. and an exhibit introduction by Fr. Al Naseman, C.PP.S. In 1998, Saint John’s Abbey and St. John’s University commissioned renowned calligrapher Donald Jackson to produce a hand-written, hand-illuminated bible. The Benedictine monks authorized Jackson and a team of artists, calligraphers and theologians to use the ancient techniques of calligraphy and illumination with an ecumenical Christian approach to the bible rooted in Benedictine spirituality. The result is a breathtaking work of art and spirituality. Approximately 160 illuminations are included in the completed work, which is kept in Collegeville, Minnesota. Examples of the art can be seen at www.saintjohnsbible.org. The exhibit comes to St. Charles through the efforts of Sr. Martha Bertke, C.PP.S., the manager of Saint Charles Senior Living Community. Sr. Martha read about the Saint John’s Bible and traveled to the Mount St. Benedict Monastery in Erie, Pennsylvania, where art from the bible was on display. “I was amazed by the exhibit-it’s not like looking at photos,” she said. “The artwork is beautiful but it also has a spiritual depth that raises it to a richer level. It is biblical and inspirational, spiritual and artistic. It touches not only the intellect but also the soul.” “We hope to bring many people to St. Charles to see the exhibit,” she said. “We think it will appeal to art lovers, people of all faiths and anyone who wants to learn more about the process that brought this wonderful work of art into being.” St. Charles is the motherhouse of the Cincinnati Province of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, and serves as a retirement center

for priests and brothers. It is also home to Saint Charles Senior Living Community, with apartments available for lay residents.
