The namesOl'ga Bar'eesuvnaand Vlad'eem'irN'ikalaiv'ich'may look, and
sound, a bit of a mouthfulbut it's easy to see why, when you understandhow
Russiannameswork.
Russianpeople have three names:their first name (likeOl'ga or Vlad'eem'ir);
a patronymicname (likeBar'eesuvnaor N'ikalaiv'ich')and a surname(like
Papova for a woman or lvanof for a man). The patronymic name is formed by
taking your father'sfirst name and adding a special endingto it. Ol'ga's father
was called Bareesso her patronymicis Bar'eesuvna.Vlad'eem'ir'sfather was
N'ikalaiso his patronymicis N'ikalaiv'ich'.
When you first meet someone formally, they will probably introduce
themselves by their first name and patronymic and may not even mention
their surname. When you get to know someone better, they may invite you to
call them just by their first name or they may even invite you to use an even
more familiarversionof their first name.

The Kremlin
At the heart of Moscow is the Kremlin- Kr'eml'- which means literally
'citadel' or'walled fortress'. This was the original city, founded in the twelfth
century by Prince Yury Dolgoruky.Within its walls are magnificent churches
with glitteringonion domes or cupolas, palacesand an armoury. The city of
Moscow has developed over the centuries in ever-increasingcircles which
radiate from the Kremlin.

Time for tea
As you know, the Russian word for tea is chai. The traditional way of making
tea is to use a samovar, which is like an ornamental urn with a tap on the side
and a tiny teapot on top. Russiansoften take their tea with lemon and sugar
to taste and sometimes with a little dish of fruit conserve for sweetness.

Oliviersalad
Vlad'eem'irN'ikalaiv'ich'orders an Oliviersalad. This is named after an
eighteenth-centuryFrenchchef who lived in Moscow. lt is made of chicken,
potatoes, vegetables and fruit smothered in mayonnaise and garnished with
chopped eggs and herbs.
