HOME AND ENVIRONMENT

The following tables shows the length of residency, house ownership, land ownership, housing structure, electricity, means of cooking, garbage disposal, and water sources surveyed in Riverside, Hipodromo in October 2010. The length of residency is the length of time the family lived in their place. The house ownership and land ownership in a place can be owned, rented or squat. Landowner is a holder of the estate in land with considerable rights of ownership or, simply put, an owner of the land. Lot rent means you are renting a vacant piece of land which may or may not have improvements, like water, sewer lines, or electricity. Squatting consists of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied space or building, usually residential, that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise have permission to use. The housing structure can be wood, concrete or mixed (wood and concrete). The availability of electricity on every household, means of cooking are divided into electric stove, wood, charcoal, or gas. The garbage disposal may be covered or uncovered and water sources can be from pipe, artesian, spring/river, deep well or surface well.

HEALTH CARE This part presents the healthcare access of the people. Another problem plaguing the individual is the access to the healthcare. There is lack of health insurance which relates to income. Low income has been associated with relatively higher rates of health problems. The use of healthcare services is also affected by unemployment and poverty. Even though some government assistance is available, eligibility for government insurance program and benefits varies considerably from state to state and is continually being reevaluated.
