Rice/McAuley College Fair 2010
Largest number of schools ever for annual event On Tuesday evening, September 28th both Brother Rice and Mother McAuley were abuzz with students and their parents gathering information and meeting with representatives from about 200 colleges, universities, branches of military service, and technical schools from 6:30 until 8:30 PM. “This was one of the best attended college fairs we have hosted,” Director of Counseling Sue Ellen Parker said. “We are excited to provide this opportunity for parents and students to speak to so many college representatives on a one to one basis.” Special thanks to the representatives of the Mothers’ Club who provided hospitality for the college representatives in the form of pizza and various beverages. Most importantly, we recognize our super office assistant: Mrs. Mary Beth Jantz who coordinates the College Fair each year. Additionally, College Financial Aid night, sponsored by Brother Rice and Mother McAuley was held Wednesday, October 27th in the Mother McAuley Dining Hall at 7 PM. Financial Aid expert Frank Palmasani provided information on applying for aid, student loans, grants and scholarships for college. He introduced his website: www.managingcollegecost.com.

A New Job and Different Hours for a Veteran Counselor...
Some students may have been surprised when they looked at their schedule sheets late this summer and saw a new counselor’s name near the top. They may have been even more surprised when they returned to school and saw Mr. Carlson was still there. This year, Mr. Carlson has moved into a new part-time role at Brother Rice. His office has also moved—into the Library near the Resource Room. His new duties focus on the use of Naviance/Family Connection. He will be working primarily with Seniors this semester and Juniors next semester as the students learn to navigate the web-based program. He is hoping to maximize their use of the program and to help the students to get the most out of Family Connection. He is also available to parents who want to establish their own accounts. He can be reached directly at 773-298-2545 or by calling the school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursday mornings and asking for extension 461. Mr. Carlson will continue to make classroom presentations to Seniors and Juniors regarding college information, application procedures and testing. He will continue to edit this newsletter as he has for the last few years and to work with individual students on an “as needed” basis, coordinating his work with a student’s assigned counselor. Besides his work in the counseling department, Mr. Carlson continues to do Kairos retreats, play music at school liturgies including the weekly Tuesday morning Mass and work with the Edmund Rice Society at the P.A.D.S. shelter on first Tuesdays of each month.
