The Secret to Selling your Home in a Buyers Market
Selling your home can be a time-consuming and tricky venture. Every homeowner would like to sell for the highest price possible. When it comes to pricing your house, how do you make sure you don't price it so low that you later have regrets, or not price it too high and scare off buyers? "It's a careful balance," says Bonita Springs/Estero Luxury Real Estate Expert, Michael Burke. "The most common mistake people make is getting emotional. Your home may be priceless to you, but chances are you won't find someone else who feels the same way. " How do you find that fine line between "priceless" and "priced-right"? The first step is to review recent sales in your neighborhood. The most important comparables are pending sales or those "in escrow." Pay attention to neighborhood dividing lines and physical barriers such as major streets, freeways or railroads. "Compare similar square footage and if possible homes built around the same time, a home built in the 1950s and one built in 2005 won't price the same," says Michael Burke. There might be 100 active listings in the area, but these only tell the seller at what price their home won't sell. Pay attention to the pending prices of home sales in your area. These will tell you at what price buyers are willing to start negotiating a sales price. Make that your starting point. Step two is to consider your reduction is necessary. No matter the listing price, it needs to be adjusted down if buyers aren't looking at the home. Next, don't assume the buyer knows your price is negotiable. Most buyers only look at homes in the price range at which a lender says they are qualified. If your home is priced even just a little higher, the buyer won't ever see it. In general, the higher the price, the fewer potential buyers there are. Finally, sweeten the transaction terms. If you're willing to close escrow quickly, you'll attract buyers who want to move in right away. The more creative and flexible you can be in meeting the buyer's needs, the more success you'll have attracting them. In the end, the hard truth is that a buyer does not care how much you paid for your property, how much you owe, the cost of upgrades, improvements or repairs, how badly you need to get out of the sale, or how much you love your home. For most people, a house is the single largest investment ever undertaken and most sellers expect to make some profit on its sale. Unfortunately, however, your desired profit means very little to a potential buyer. So, leave sentiment at the door, listen to advice from your Realtor and watch the market. It is not a secret, pricing your home right is the best way to sell your home. Getting it right will help you sell your property quickly.

listing price. In a market of more sellers than buyers, the 80/20 rule applies. Buyers are likely to look only at the 20% best-priced homes. The other 80% will sit on the market until a drastic reduction in price, or may fail to sell and be taken off the market. If you have 10 days without a showing, a price

MAKING YOUR EMPLOYER A PARTNER IN YOUR FINANCIAL PLANNING
converted to a high-deductible healthcare plan, you may have the option of starting a health savings account (HSA). These accounts help workers to save and spend money tax-free for medical expenses not covered by the plan or your deductible. Why are they a good idea? Because you can sock away money tax-free that will cover the amount of the deductible (at least $1,050 for individuals, $2,100 for families) if you need it, and it will grow taxfree over time if you don't. See if a Roth 401(k) works for you: In 2006, the government gave employers clearance to offer Roth 401(k)s, employersponsored retirement plans that allow workers to put all or part of their 401(k)s into a Roth, which allow after-tax money to grow tax-free. Roth 401(k)s allow higher contribution limits -$15,500 in 2007 plus an additional $5,000 if you're over 50 - compared to traditional Roth IRAs that limit annual contributions to $4,000 with an extra $1,000 for those over 50. Look for a finders' fee: Companies rarely like to give away money unless they know they're saving some in the process. Many companies are now offering finders' fees to employees who successfully bring new workers in the door. Also, some companies give away special bonuses for bringing in new clients, so don't miss a chance to earn them. Check your target bonus amounts: This is usually not a problem for most people who receive annual bonuses, but it makes sense to double check the minimum bonus you should earn annually and what it will take to exceed that limit. Get flexible: If your company has a flexible spending account for medical, commuting or child-care costs, estimate carefully what you'll need to spend and get on board. While workers can get a chance to spend out their accounts into the next tax year, it's very important to project exact numbers so you won't lose funds at the end of the eligibility period. Get smart: More than threefourths of U.S. companies offer education benefits, so if you have the time and inclination, finish that degree or complete a particular course of study to prepare you for your next job or for your enjoyment. Most companies will ask you to stay a certain length of time after receiving such benefits, which is only fair. But education is worth far more than the dollar cost of tuition, so don't pass it up. Get fit: Some companies negotiate membership discounts to gyms and other fitness facilities, and that's a worthwhile benefit. But these days, with company health care premiums going through the roof, some employers are actually paying employees to lose weight, quit smoking or take other steps to improve their health. Have some fun: Companies get discounts to a variety of entertainments - the local amusement park, sports events, theaters, restaurants, auto shows and other local events. If they interest you - and particularly if they interest your kids - you'd be foolish to pass up such discounts. Be proactive: If you hear friends or clients boasting about particular benefits or incentives at their companies, quiz them to find out as much as you can about how their companies afford those benefits. If the story checks out, then go to your own company and ask them if they might consider it.

This column is produced by the Financial Planning Association and provided by Al Procaccino, a member of FPA and Certified Financial Planner with Castle Financial www.castlefinancial.com . People who look to their employers for nothing more than a weekly paycheck and basic health care insurance are missing the boat. It makes the most sense to ask a future employer about benefits before you agree to come to work. But even if you have been working for the same company for years, it's never too late to go to human resources to make sure you're getting the most mileage out of your current benefits and maybe pick up a new perk or two. See if you have the following options available, and check with your tax professional or a financial adviser before you make a selection: Look at health savings accounts: If your employer has

Photo Sites Shedding Light on Creative E-Commerce
(NUI) - While many have taken up photography as a fun hobby over the years, today's high-tech world has taken the once simple pastime to an entirely new level. Elaine Hoffman, a full-time therapist and amateur photographer, frequently uses online photo services to create greeting cards for friends from her favorite collections of floral images. But until recently, she'd never considered a second career in greeting card design. "My friends kept saying, 'You should sell these!' So when I found a Web site that allowed me to set up my own store, I thought I'd give it a shot," Hoffman said. Millions of digital photographers like Hoffman have discovered the benefits of online photo services as a way to share images and create products like greeting cards and books. According to a report released by InfoTrends Research Group, photo sites generated more than $400 million in more users with its offerings of customizable photo products such as cards, calendars and gifts but above all, allowing regular consumers to sell these products by themselves with their own photos and designs. "I was surprised by how easy it was to start selling my work," Hoffman said. "I'm not getting rich off of it yet, but it's great to make some extra cash while doing something I love." As photo sites look to combine e-commerce with selfpublishing, this new consumerdriven marketplace is opening doors for amateurs and professionals alike. Thanks to new advances online, children's book authors may start publishing their ideas without agents, novelists may sell their work without fees and shutterbugs can start turning a profit on their favorite snapshots. Spring Essentials From the Stylist
(NUI) - It's time to peel off those itchy wool sweaters, ladies, and jump into spring style with the ultimate guide to this year's essentials from Celebrity Stylist Mark-Alan Harmon and the frugal fashionista shopping haven, Prime Outlets. According to Harmon, style sensei to Hollywood elite, bringing great style into your wardrobe can be as simple as adding a few key pieces each season. "Dressing well can be easy and affordable; you just need to know what to look for and how to bring it into your wardrobe," explains Harmon. Another key factor, he notes, is knowing where to go to get the look, citing the outlets as the place to experiment with trends and get direct access to some of the world's most fashionable, trend-defining clothing. Known as the destination for value-minded fashionistas, Prime Outlets features a compelling collection of designer and name-brand retailers offering everyday savings of 25 to 65 percent off full retail prices, including style icons kate spade, Coach Factory and Salvatore Ferragamo. Prime Outlets suggests the following spring essentials from the stylist to help create a look straight off the runway: 1. Be Bold with Color Trade in all that black this spring is all about bright colors! Add a splash of color to any outfit with a violet blazer, a pair of blue flats or a yellow clutch. 2. Boy Meets Girl - Add vests, V-neck sweaters and high-waisted trousers to your closet this spring as menswear makes its way into women's fashions. This season is all about the fitted, tailored, menswearinspired look. Sheer Indulgence - Layer translucent fabrics over camisoles or under jackets to capture a soft, feminine look. Follow the trend with blouses and dresses layered with luminous, pale-colored materials and add iridescent accessories. Best Dressed The absolute spring trend is the return of the dress. Look for the classic, sleeveless shift, stylish 5. frocks with ruffled accents, flowing floral prints and pronounced patterns, along with the essential, button-down shirtdress. In the Trenches - Stay cozy, yet chic, on cool days with the must-have item of the season - a trendy trench coat. Whether yellow, green or blue, a colored trench coat is a crucial element in every fashionista's wardrobe and a great way to make a bold entrance. 3.

Get Your Feet 'Spring Ready'
(NUI) With warmer temperatures approaching, people will begin to prepare their feet for their spring debut which means making sure their feet look and feel good. One way to achieve that feeling is to get a professional pedicure. In a recent American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) survey of women ages 18-49, close to 50 percent stated that they had received a professional pedicure by the age of 25 - a ritual that may be more healthful than you think. "Pampering and grooming your feet promotes good foot hygiene and should be done frequently to contribute to not only your foot health, but also to your body's overall health," said Dr. Marlene Reid, an APMA podiatric physician. The following tips will help you attain a safe and perfect pedicure, which will put some spring into your step for the warmer, sandal-wearing season ahead: For salon pedicures: • Think clean. Salons are typically cleanest earlier in the day, so consider making your pedicure appointment during the morning hours. Limit the risk of infection. As precautions, take your own utensils and refrain from shaving your legs prior to your visit to limit the risk of cuts and scrapes getting infected. Additionally, don't allow technicians to use a razor to remove dead skin on your feet. This can lead to infection if done incorrectly. For pedicures at home: • Properly care for cuticles. Always use a rubber cuticle tool to gently push back cuticle tissue. Never cut cuticles as this can increase the risk of infection. Resist pushing back cuticles often - this can make cuticles thicker and harder to manage. • Stick to straight. Use a toenail clipper with a straight edge to clip toenails straight across. Rounding toenail edges greatly increases the chance that ingrown nails will develop. • Smooth out feet correctly. Begin by soaking feet in warm water for five minutes. Follow up by scrubbing feet gently with a pumice stone, foot file or exfoliating scrub to remove thick, dead skin build-up. • Finish up with polish. Always use nail polish when putting the final touches on your springready feet. Only apply polish to healthy nails - if nails are thick or discolored, don't cover them with polish. This locks out moisture and prevents the nail bed from breathing. If fungus problems persist, consult a podiatric physician immediately.

Your Home & Garden
tips, news and advice for homeowners

Planning Makes Spring Cleaning Less of a Chore
(NUI) - It's spring cleaning time again. While Americans spend billions of dollars on cleaning products annually, they often overlook the quality of their home's indoor air. Recent research has found that in homes across America, the quality of indoor air is often several times worse than outdoor air. One reason for the increase in airborne contaminants is that new homes are being built and remodeled to seal air in more tightly. Dusty, dirty homes at any temperature can mean discomfort. In fact, indoor air quality is among the Environmental Protection Agency's top three health concerns. When planning your spring cleaning, it's important to consider the quality of indoor air, which, without treatment, can be up to 100 times worse than outside air. There are many misconceptions when it comes to indoor air quality products, such as; air fresheners, air filters or airpurifiers. An air freshener will emit a fragrance into the air. A filter might capture some indoor contaminants but not destroy them, allowing them to continue multiplying. However, an air purifier, like the Infinity Air Purifier by Carrier, has patented technology that not only captures but kills up to 99.9 percent of airborne viruses, bacteria and mold spores. In addition to adding an air purifier to your home's heating and cooling systems, here are some tips, brought to you by Carrier, that can help improve the quality of indoor air. • Change your home's air filter monthly or as recommended by the manufacturer. • Use only direct-vent, sealed combustion fireplaces. • Install carbon monoxide detectors. • Prohibit smoking within the home. For additional information on home heating and cooling systems, visit www.carrier.com and click on the 'home' button.

Construction Materials Can Make all the Difference
(NUI) - Concrete construction is not what people generally think of when they consider the main material their home should be made from. Most assume that a house is built from wood frames and insulation. However, what they don't realize are the many benefits concrete can provide. Concrete masonry is a beautiful material that can create any shape or size home that you can imagine. If you drive up to a home today, you probably cannot tell how that home was constructed. This is because the covering of a home, whether it's stucco, brick, wood or vinyl siding, provides the same finished appearance as a woodframe home. Beyond the beauty of concrete masonry lie the ruggedness and durability. Concrete masonry is built to last and is a solid investment for your family in terms of both value and safety. Insurance companies recognize concrete as being safer than any other form of construction material when fire threatens a home. It is completely non-combustible and is classified as an A1 resistant material. When disaster strikes in the form of hurricanes, tornadoes or wild fires, your family can be sure they will be secure in a home with concrete walls. Today's strongest residential wall systems are made of concrete masonry. Concrete masonry not only protects, it is also a great way to lower utility bills. Concrete masonry walls are solid, continuous and airtight, whereas wood-framed walls are a collection of components leaving many joints for potential air leaks. Today's designers recognize concrete's energy efficiency and can therefore justify smaller heating and air conditioning systems, creating savings from the start. The low maintenance of concrete masonry is also an appealing feature. Termites, rotting and paint peeling or fading rarely affect concrete homes. Concrete masonry can also withstand the elements better, reducing the damage from wind and rain over the lifetime of a home. One other benefit that does not carry a price tag is the peace and quiet that concrete provides. The greater mass of a concrete masonry wall can reduce sound penetrating through a wall by over 80 percent when compared to a wood frame. With home building space becoming more scarce, we are now becoming forced to build our homes closer together and near noisier places like highways, railways and airports. If you would like more information about how concrete masonry can make your life easier, visit www.ncma.org.

HOME RENOVATIONS

Heartworm:
Is Your Dog at Risk?
(NC) - Does your dog love the outdoors? She's in good company. From visits to offleash parks, to frenzied splashes in ponds, 90 percent of Americans take their dogs outside on a regular basis. Unfortunately, being outside also comes with health risks like heartworm disease. Hundreds of dogs are infected each year. Country dogs, suburban dogs, even city dogs are at risk. Why? Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes. One bite from an infected mosquito is enough to transmit the disease to your dog. Wild animals can become infected and turn into heartworm reservoirs for mosquitoes, leading to a constant risk of infection for your dog. And, since heartworms are not readily visible the way ticks and fleas are, you may not even know your dog is sick. Symptoms often don't appear for six months - when the parasites arrive in the dog's heart and begin reproducing. Your dog may look fine and you may never see worms, but your dog may still be infected. Even if your veterinarian deworms your dog annually, this is not a reliable protection. Not all deworming products protect against both gastrointestinal worms and heartworms. Left untreated, heartworms can persist in your dog for up to seven years, causing severe damage to the heart, lungs, liver, and may eventually cause death. So what can you do? • Be sure your dog is healthy. Ask your veterinarian to perform a simple blood test each year. Think prevention. • Highly effective preventative treatments such as Revolution are available from your veterinarian. They are generally given monthly when mosquitoes may be present. • Talk to your veterinarian about preventative heartworm medications that are easy to administer and will protect your dog from heartworm disease. (NC)-Imagine a floor that's as easy to move as furniture. Years ago this would have been impossible. Once you chose a floor, it would be yours for decades, like it or not. Times have changed. Recent advancements have improved floor joints to the point where un-installing a floor is not only possible, it's an added benefit for homeowners. A new generation of hardsurface flooring, referred to as "smart floors," are just that kind of breakthrough. Available in hardwood, cork and laminate, these floors are high quality, engineered floors known for their stunning appearance, excellent performance, easy installation and convenient re-use. Many homeowners install laminate floors in high-traffic and high-use spaces. The floor stands

Add Years of Life to Your Floors
up beautifully to the wear and tear of family life. But what happens when an upgrade or change of décor is desired? Your laminate floor still looks great and has many years of life left. It seems like a shame to get rid of it. Is the only option to dump it in the local landfill? Not anymore. A variety of beautiful floors are now available in hardwood, cork and laminate that are installed without glue or nails, and can be re-used easily in another room or in another home or cottage. A leader in this style of flooring is a company called TORLYS. Every TORLYS Smart Floor is made with an ultra-tight Uniclic joint, a patented "click" joint engineered in Europe and designed for "un-installation" and re-use. "Over the years we've developed beautiful, longlasting floors with extraordinary environmental benefits," said Peter Barretto, TORLYS President and CEO. "One of those benefits is the ability to re-use our floors, up to three times under warranty." TORLYS commitment goes even further. If re-use is not a preferred option, any TORLYS floor can be donated to a local Habitat for Humanity ReStore, extending the life of the floor for use by others in the community. For more information visit torlys.com. TIP Consider the importance of the reuse of your floor. It reduces the need for new manufacturing and resources, a smart action favoring the environment. It also reduces the strain on home budgets.

Building Green Could Save You Green
(NUI) - If global warming, ozone-layer depletion and animal extinctions aren't enough to inspire you to go green, perhaps monthly savings on your energy bills will do the trick. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a combination of proper insulation, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems and energy-efficient windows can lower your bills by as much as 50 percent a month. In 2006 alone, approximately 12 percent of newly constructed homes and buildings met the federal government's Energy Star standards. To date, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates there are about 750,000 Energy Star homes nationwide that together have saved more than $180 million in electricity and natural gas costs. And while updated appliances and heating and cooling systems are two of the more obvious ways in which to save on your gas and electric bills each month, there are often fairly easy, energyefficient upgrades that can be made during the construction process or while homeowners make renovations. For instance, try these energysaving tips: • Start on solid foundation. New foundation insulation panels provide cost-effective means for building thermally efficient poured concrete walls both above and below ground level. Basement space can account for up to 50 percent of the heat loss in a home that is heavily insulated above grade. ThermaEZE Thermal Insulation System by CertainTeed is one good option that creates long-term energy savings for the owner. • Side with substance. Vinyl siding, popular for its low-maintenance qualities, can also provide thermal benefits and added durability when made with rigid foam backing. Through frigid winters and sweltering summers, the insulated vinyl siding protects against heat and cold, blocking wind and weather. • Insulate. Homeowners should be choosey when it comes to selecting fiberglass insulation. Energy-efficient choices such as InsulSafe SP are high performance, noncombustible, noncorrosive and odor free. Because it won't rot, decay or absorb moisture, it will continually provide the best possible insulation for your home and keep your heat and air in. • More than a view. The windows in your home can cause energy-efficiency problems. Newer windows, however, made with low "E" glass keep your home insulated and can block 84 percent of ultraviolet rays. For more green building tips and products, visit CertainTeed at www.certainteed.com.

How to Feed Wild Birds with Less Mess
(ARA) - Feeding wild birds is a popular interest of many Americans. However, some people are hesitant to feed these outdoor pets. According to research done by the Wild Bird Feeding Industry, the number two reason why people don't feed birds is because of the mess left under their feeders. This concern has resulted in the creation of “less mess” mixes. Less mess products are made without the shells of seeds, so there's less debris scattered around feeders. Better yet, premium mixes like Wild Delight's Less Mess line of products are specially formulated to help prevent the germination of seeds into weeds under feeders. For those who want a clean yard, it's also important to put out multiple feeders to prevent overcrowding. Spreading mulch under feeders is another easy way to keep a yard looking cleaner. Thanks to the creation of less mess mixes and a little planning, bird lovers can now enjoy the hobby of bird feeding and a tidy lawn at the same time.

Parents: Make Time for Healthy Choices
(NUI) - Between soccer practice, piano lessons and homework, more and more parents are discovering that it can be hard to balance a healthy life with a busy one. Health care professionals, however, are discovering that nutrition- and activity-based habits, when developed early, can make a positive long-term impact. Eileen Berry, a Florida mother and self-taught nutritionist, has taken this to heart. "Healthy foods are available and, as parents, we need to make this happen for our kids," she said. "We don't have the luxury of 'shouldas', 'wouldas' and 'couldas,' especially when our children are involved. So, what can you do to get your children's habits on track and moving in a healthy direction? • Take a look. Check out the U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPyramid for kids online (www.mypyramid.gov) to see what your children need in their diets each day. Did you know, for example, that grains and vegetables should make up the majority of your child's diet? • Don't forget the vegetables. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that while preschool-aged children consumed about 80 percent of their recommended fruit servings a day, only 25 percent had the recommended amount of vegetables. So, it is important for parents to creatively re-introduce vegetables and change things up by choosing vegetables in a range of colors. • Check ingredients. Ingredients such as wholegrains and foods with oils derived from corn, soybean, canola and olive oils are good picks. Meanwhile, foods and beverages with caloric sweeteners as top ingredients should be avoided. • Get moving. Have fun in the outdoors. Whether it's taking a walk together with the family dog or playing catch, get moving as a family. • Set limits. Limit television and computer time to encourage your children to spend more time being active. And while all parents should be advocates for their child's health, proper nutrition and activity is even more important for survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer. These children are among those in the higher-risk population for obesity, according to health care professionals. Good choices can lead to better health and may reduce the risk of preventable cancers in adulthood. For more information on healthy habits for survivors, visit the National Children's Cancer Society at www.beyondthecure.org.

An Easy Way to Keep Germs at Bay in Your Bathroom
(ARA) – There are battles being fought in households across the country. The enemy: millions of germs and bacteria thriving blissfully on moist surfaces in your bathroom, ranging from countertops and cups to toothbrushes and towels. Helping to rid your bathroom of some of its most commonly spread germs can be easily done by using GeorgiaPacific’s Dixie (R) disposable bath cups, a trusted source for fighting germs for the past 100 years. Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourage today’s parents to stock their children’s bathrooms with disposable paper cups for rinsing. It makes sense, since some cold and flu viruses linger on non-disposable rinsing cups for up to 72 hours -- plenty of time for the germs to be picked up and passed around by several members of the family. Despite the fact that many kids regularly wash their hands and Moms regularly scrub counters and switch out hand towels, family members are still coming in contact with lots of invisible germs. A study a few years ago of parents across the country uncovered some startling statistics about the dental hygiene practices of America’s children during the postbrushing rituals of rinsing and spitting: • While four out of five children rinse regularly, nearly half of those are sharing a germ-infested, nondisposable rinsing cup with their siblings and other family members. • Worse yet, a third of the parents surveyed reluctantly admitted that their bathrooms contained no rinsing cups at all -- leaving a child or other family member no option but to slurp from their own hands or directly from an equally germ-ridden faucet. Instead, kids and parents should use a disposable cup one time, and then throw it away immediately to help prevent the spread of lingering germs and bacteria. For more germ prevention and oral care information for your kids, visit www.dixie.com and click on the link that says “Dixie Wellness.”

Spring is the Season for Auto Care
While spring is here, it's time to put the snow boots away and fill up the propane or charcoal, because summer is around the corner. It's also time to get your car serviced because of the temperate climate. When it comes to auto care, spring is the best of all seasons. Maintenance and service now will undo winter's wear and tear and prepare your vehicle for warm-weather driving ahead. The experts at the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) offer the following advice: • Read the owner's manual, and follow the recommended service schedules. • If you are not a do-ityourselfer, look for an orderly repair shop with modern equipment in the service bays and qualified automotive technicians as evidenced by trade school diplomas, certificates of • advanced course and ASE certifications. If you are having engine performance problems such as hard starts, rough idling or stalling, correct them now, before demanding stop-andgo vacation traffic. For comfort in hot weather, now's the time to have a marginally working air conditioning system serviced. Flush and refill the cooling system according to the service manual's recommendations. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. (Make sure the engine has cooled down before removing the radiator cap.) A qualified auto technician should check the tightness and condition of belts, clamps, and hoses, but you can look for signs of wear, cracking, or fraying. • Replace other filters (e.g., air, fuel and PCV) as recommended in the service manual. • Check the condition of t i r e s , including the spare. Let the tires "cool down" before checking their pressure. Uneven wear, "cupping," vibrations or "pulling" to one side indicate problems with your tires or suspension system. • Change the oil and oil filter as specified in owner's manual. Often neglected, this simple service is one of the easiest ways to extend the life of your vehicle. ASE was founded to improve the quality of

automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians. ASE-certified technicians wear blue-and-white shoulder insignia and carry credentials listing their exact area(s) of certification. Their employers often display the blue-and-white ASE sign. Visit www.ase.com for more car care tips.

Troops Struggle to Overcome Traumatic Brain Injury

Kick Start Summer With A Healthy Detox Program
However, before you start any of these programs you should consult with a doctor. For some people, those programs are too intensive and too harsh. Many detox programs suggest taking a few days off of work which just isn't possible for most people. Not sure where to begin? Try these tips from eHow.com's herbal medicine expert Katherine Huether: • Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. Add some lemon occasionally to help repair your liver and for taste. • Drink herbal tea or green tea several times a day. • Eat a high-fiber diet with a lot of fruits and vegetables. • Visit the Daily Plate (www.thedailyplate.com) a site devoted to people who want to eat smarter. You should try doing these things all year long, but if you're like most people, you will not start paying attention until the early spring. After a few weeks you will notice that your skin is clearer, water retention goes down, and your pants get a little looser. In the spring, get outside as much as you can. Go for several walks and spend some time in the garden. This is the ideal time to reconnect with the outdoors, and the extra physical activity while outside will help shed those unwanted pounds. Sunlight allows for added vitamin D - it helps fight depression and increases bone strength and mass. There are parts of the U.S. that don't always get sunlight, so it becomes even more important to spend time outside when you get the chance. Start looking at the farm stands this time of year for strawberries and other dark, bitter or colorful fruits and vegetables. If you eat them from local sources, you know you are getting the tastiest and healthiest produce out there, as long as it's organic. Fatty foods and cocktails can really overtax the liver. Late winter and spring are excellent times to start taking care of it. Herbs are a great way to help this process. When tasting herbs, you want your taste buds to register the bitter quality because it stimulates the liver. You can take milk thistle in capsule form, but always check with your doctor before taking anything. A healthy dose of these bitters and greens will give the endocrine system a good boost: • Burdock root • Dandelion greens and root • Yellow dock • Artichoke • Milk thistle For more tips on getting healthy from Katherine Huether, visit www.ehow.com.

(NUI) - Early spring is the ideal time to go through a detoxification program. This is when our body needs it most and it is a good way to kick-start any weight-loss you may need.

New Study Offers Hope for Heart Patients
(NUI) - A recently completed clinical trial showed that patients suffering from advanced congestive heart failure (CHF) exhibited significantly improved heart function after supplementing with ubiquinol, a newly available and highly absorbable form of CoenzymeQ10. In the first clinical trial evaluating ubiquinol's effects on late-stage CHF, cardiologist Peter Langsjoen found that critically ill patients who supplemented with this nutrient for just three months experienced a substantial increase in their hearts' ability to pump blood. Furthermore, patients' plasma levels of CoQ10, which are key to overall heart health, significantly increased an indication that they were absorbing more of the nutrient. Langsjoen's study, although an early-stage trial, offers hope to many Americans. According to the American Heart Association, an estimated 5.3 million Americans currently suffer from CHF. Roughly 550,000 people are diagnosed with heart failure every year, and it is the leading cause of hospitalization in people older than 65. Heart failure does not mean the heart has stopped working. Rather, it means that the heart's pumping power is weaker than normal. With CHF, blood moves through the heart and body at a slower rate, and pressure in the heart increases. As a result, the heart cannot pump enough oxygen and nutrients to meet the body's needs. Ways of combating CHF usually include a treatment program of rest, proper diet, modified daily activities, transplants, valve replacements and drugs, such as beta blockers, digitalis and vasodilators. CoQ10 has been used as a dietary supplement for cardiac patients for 40 years. Ubiquinol, the active antioxidant form of CoQ10, has only been available in supplement form for the past year. "The effects of ubiquinol on late-stage heart failure patients resulted in striking improvements beyond anything I've seen in 25 years of cardiology practice," said Dr. Langsjoen, who conducted the research in Tyler, Texas. "It is my strong feeling that this ubiquinol product is a m a j o r breakthrough." Ubiquinol and CoQ10, both found in every cell in the body, are essential to generating cellular energy and sustaining life. However, as the active antioxidant form of CoQ10, ubiquinol protects cells from free radical damage. KanekaQH is the world's only supplemental ubiquinol. For more information on the clinical research conducted on ubiquinol and CoQ10 over the past 50 years, visit www.KanekaQH.com.

(NUI) - Many of our troops returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are still facing a battle - one against traumatic brain injury (TBI). Thousands of injured service members and veterans are returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan with hopes of transitioning into successful civilian life. For many of these individuals, gaps and barriers to health care, job training and employment, housing, recreation and transportation limit their ability to fully participate in family and community life. They are struggling, bound to a system that is itself stressed and often illequipped to meet their needs. TBI is the signature wound of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Department of Defense figures cite that one in every nine American deployed soldiers to Iraq suffers a traumatic brain injury. TBI is caused by exposure to blast waves from explosive devices. Some of the tell-tale signs include: headaches, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, slowness in thinking and communicating, mood changes, ringing in the ears and other symptoms that can significantly disrupt relationships and undermine the potential for successful reintegration into civilian life. Easter Seals has stepped up to offer help and hope for veterans with TBI. For nearly 90 years, they have been providing and advocating for services that change the lives of people living with disabilities and their families. Easter Seals is the nation's leading non-profit provider of services for individuals with autism, developmental and physical disabilities, mental health issues and other special needs. With a generous grant from the Ludy Family Foundation, Easter Seals launched the Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury Project. With additional funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Easter Seals is significantly enhancing outreach efforts and augmenting the existing program to reach veterans wherever they live. The program offers returning veterans with TBI the Posit Science Brain Fitness Program an in-home, computer-based cognitive rehabilitation program and provides participants and their families with other essential Easter Seals supports and services. To learn more about the project, visit www.easter seals.com or call toll-free 866423-4981.

Prepare the chicken nuggets according to package directions. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a medium saucepan set over medium heat. Cook the onions and garlic for about 5 minutes or until soft and fragrant. Stir in the pasta sauce and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes. Toss the mozzarella with the Parmesan and parsley. Remove the cooked nuggets from the oven. Top each nugget with a spoonful of sauce and sprinkle with a little of the mozzarella mixture. Return the nuggets to the oven; bake for 5 minutes or until cheese is melted and bubbly. Meanwhile, cook the penne according to the package directions. Drain well. Toss hot penne with the remaining pasta sauce and any remaining mozzarella mixture. Serve with the mini chicken Parmesan.

Trim fat from pork, and cut into 2-inch cubes. Stir together dry seasonings in a small bowl, and sprinkle over pork, turning to coat all sides. Place tomatoes, lime juice, one onion and one clove of garlic into a large slow cooker, and top with pork and raisins. Cover and cook on high for five hours or on low for ten hours. Remove meat from slow cooker with a slotted spoon, and place in a large bowl to keep warm. Pour juices from slow cooker into a medium saucepan. Add the remaining onion, garlic and dried pepper to saucepan, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Let cool slightly, then puree in a blender or food processor. Shred pork using two forks, and stir in half the sauce. Spoon into tortillas, if desired, and serve with avocado, cilantro and remaining sauce.

The Secret of the Mountain Echo
A son and his father were walking on the mountains. Suddenly, his son falls, hurts himself and screams: AAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! To his surprise, he hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain; AAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Curious, he yells: "Who are you?" He receives the answer: "Who are you?" Angered at the response, he screams: "Coward!" He receives the answer: "Coward!" He looks to his father and asks: "What's going on?" The father smiles and says: "My son, pay attention." And then he screams to the mountain: "I admire you!" The voice answers: "I admire you!" Again the man screams: "You are a champion!" The voice answers: "You are a champion!" The boy is surprised, but does not understand. Then the father explains: "People call this ECHO, but really this is LIFE. It gives you back everything you say or do. Our life is simply a reflection of our actions. If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. If you want more competence in your team, improve your competence. This relationship applies to everything, in all aspects of life; Life will give you back everything you have given to it." YOUR LIFE IS NOT A COINCIDENCE. IT'S A REFLECTION OF YOU!" DUDE RANCHES:
A GREEN VACATION CHOICE FOR YOUR FAMILY
(ARA) – As more people are becoming aware of environmental issues, vacationing green is a growing travel trend. Families are seeking vacation options that offer activities that respect the earth, and experiences that create cherished memories and a renewed connection to nature. “Dude Ranches in our association are environmentally kind and a great way to bring your family closer on your next vacation,” says Colleen Hodson of The Dude Ranch Association, an organization that represents over 100 ranches in the western United States and Canada. “People come to enjoy the outdoors, have an adventure and relax in nature. After they leave, they often have a renewed appreciation for the environment.” So what is it like to vacation on a dude ranch? Imagine cool, fresh mountain air, riding a trail on your trusted horse, participating in a cattle drive during a beautiful sunset, and hearing the dinner bell call you to a delicious meal. And this is just a start; many ranches offer spas, rafting, fishing, hunting, and special adult and children’s programs. If this sounds like a vacation you might be interested in, there are options for every budget. Plus, many ranches participate in activities that help preserve the environment that they rely on so you can feel good about your trip. For example, Rocking Z Ranch in Montana uses a stationary diesel motor that is powered by recycled vegetable oil to pump water for irrigation. This worked so well, the ranch took the idea one step further by using the vegetable oil to make biodiesel after taking out the fatty acids. They use this to run the tractors, loaders, an excavator, dozer and diesel pickup during the summer months. Coffee Creek Ranch in California respects the environment by not spraying their fruit trees with any chemical pesticides. And like many hotels and travel establishments, you have the option to get fresh towels every day or hang them up and reuse them as a way to conserve water. Recycling is another aspect that dude ranches are embracing. Keep in mind, with some ranches being far from major cities where a recycling program might exist, it’s a bit harder than simply putting items in a bin and putting it at the end of the driveway every week. Wilderness Trails Ranch in Colorado collects bottles, cans, plastic and paper from the approximately 38 guests and 30 staff that stay at the ranch each week and loads a large trailer to take into town 30 miles away. “Successful ranching depends on a positive relationship with the earth, therefore ranchers know that they need to treat it with care. This relationship influences a visitor’s experience at a dude ranch and often brings them a deeper appreciation for the environment in which they live,” adds Hodson. A ranch offers activities for the whole family. Maybe your daughter loves horses and has always dreamed of lopping across a grassy meadow, or your son wants to learn how to rope a steer. While your wife enjoys some time in the spa, why not try some fly fishing? Then you better rest up so you can all go whitewater rafting the next day. So if you are looking for a vacation that will leave your family with memories to last a lifetime and a closer relationship with Mother Nature then a vacation at Wilderness Trails Ranch, Coffee Creek Ranch or The Rocking Z Ranch are the destinations you are looking for. For more information about vacations where your family can embrace the great outdoors visit www.guestranch.com.
