How to speak and what to write is a matter of creativity. Like Calvin once quoted aptly “You can’t just turn on creativity like a faucet. You have to be in right mood. Hobbes: What mood is that? Calvin: Last minute panic. For last few months I have been reading not only for the content but for picking up creating writing also. People get imaginative to an amazing extent and I seldom forget to collect the nuggets of their writings. I prepared a notebook for all such collections. A notebook to collect all good writings I come across, whatever source. The time when I started this activity, I thought that in couple of months resources would dry up. Only to know later that how terribly wrong was I. Keeping the tradition alive but with a little “e” touch to it I converted my notebook to e-Notebook. Here is the first edition to that: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • I imposed on myself a profound discipline and went through it heroically. I love tragic endings in the novels. I look for books that would leave me crushed at the end. Right from the facsimile of the Magna Carta in front in piece. I had started writing mostly under the influence of events occurring around me and in the style of any write that was uppermost in my mind at that time. The cup of coffee blunted the listener’s critical faculties and made them declare my work a masterpiece. And tune of the night breeze induce a sort of self forgetfulness in which state I feel an inexplicable aching of the spirit which churns up a single tear which rolls down The moment the tear is detached, the sinner’s repentance is admitted and his soul gains a release. Naturally my younger brother and my coffee drinking friends admired / endorsed my view. Finally I came to conclusion that the editor was perhaps reading and re-reading and was so carried away that he was drafting suggestions for developing it into a full bodied composition of epic proportions. Even the masters faced a cold soul killing reception at the start of their lives. I had no doubt that once he surrendered himself to my writing he would become my most passionate champion. I do feel like you are walking on broken glass. We are never going to survive unless we get a little crazy. I went back home little exhausted but also feeling triumphant having done my quota of work for the day. This must have been an earlier testament of the women’s liberal movement. Men assigned her a secondary place and kept you there with such subtlety and cunning that she herself begin to loose all notion of her independence, her individuality, stature and strength. The reviews are favorable. I was buoyed up by them but my wife did not share my optimism. In every place everyone found a token of legendary hero or a mark left by god during a brief sojourn.

We cannot console ourselves with the thought that this happened three and a half decade ago. Your solution does not seem to have worked in your case. One may learn to walk on water, mesmerized a mad elephant, muzzle a tiger or a lion, walk on fire or perform other feats, but yet the real feat would be to still the restless maid and understand one’s real self. I felt ashamed of myself as an editor. I felt I had prostituted my position for a domestic cause and that my readers would be justified in stoning me at sight. Tired of having nothing but malls to go to

If it was not for work no one would ever want to leave their warm bed in a winter morning. Rushing to be at the office or to do the household chores weekdays always burns out to be hasty affairs. That’s when Sunday morning come as a breath of fresh air. These allows one to take liberty of sleeping till late waking up only when eyes are tired of remaining closed. A Sunday brunch provides an opportunity to just be you and discuss everything under the sun but work. • If there was a time begging for an idea, it’s now

It’s a time when organizations are letting go of employees, a time when businesses are shutting shop but it need not necessary a time to hold back. It might just be the push you need to go out and explore something different. Something big, real estate is cheaper, government policies are conductive, inflation is under control and growth rate is steady. Pink slips and job insecurities mean that talent is much easier to source. The results will be quick and only the best will survive. History is a living proof of this. Google, CNN, Walt Disney to name a few companies that started worst of the times made it big. Proof that all you need is an idea, the rest will follow and there could not have been a better time and opportunity. • Obama jokes Why did Barrack Obama decide to be a lawyer? He did not want to have to work for a living. Obama’s mother in law might be moving into the white house with him. Joe Biden was right. Hostile forces will test him in the first few months. • The loony Toons - TOI Editorial This young lady, a movie buff but the one who only likes dramas and thrillers, because they portray normal lives with real characters and not some “bright blobs” was wondering what it is in animated films that can make me, a twenty year old man misty eyed. But yes it is true that I love toons in their full slapstick glory, and even if they exist in a world imagined. I am still being human compelled to try and make sense of everything around me. So here is my explanation. I like cartoons, because they are so unreal. Toons are mirror images of what we wish for and their world is what we crave for. They are our fantasies,

floating in a world that is simple, just a full of bright colors like yellow sunshine, unlike real world that has too much of grey in it. Toons because they are creation of imagination that is unbound and unshackled by real world chains, are our purest ideas, untouched by doubts and compulsions of life. • International Kashmir – TOI Editorial

Rather than making the “Kashmir” word taboo, New Delhi ought to make it a totem of pride. A testament of India’s democratic and social credentials as demonstrated by recent state elections where the enthusiastic turn out of voters cast a ballot for peace and prosperity – for bijli, sadak and paani and against talibanization by bigotry and separatisms. • • • • • • • • Fair and square Here comes that scent of victory What’s the meaning of almost winning – Losing? We are not worthy of it. Isaac Newton propounded his great law when he said that each proposed action has an equal and opposite “NEGATION” Sipping my tea and munching a biscuit, I realize the truth of axiom of the management Guru Charlie who said, almost, that there is no problem so big that cannot be replaced with tea and biscuit. Kill the competition because there is only one place at the top. Year Two Thousand Ten, when aam aadmi voted in progress, liberalization, secularism and turned his back to corruption, communalism and regionalism. A Topless Tale – TOI Editorial

I was often tempted as a kid to bounce a groundnut of the bald pate in front of me at the cinema theatre. I once did just that and had my ear painfully tweaked by dad who had to face my target ire. I smiled tolerantly, however, when my exuberant boy did precise the same thing to me the other day. Life has came full circle, like a big tonsure on my head - Nature’s handiwork, not the barber’s. My hair loss has started early. I found myself unwittingly vying for the title of the best Vinod look-alike, cranium wise, even in my mid twenties. I splurged on hair restorers and growth stimulants that claim to be efficacious but miserably failed to fertilize my fast thinning thatch. I even had my head shaved at relative’s suggestion, hoping it would promote regeneration. Instead, it only further retarded my sluggish growth. I seriously considered a hair transplant with my hair haring off my head alarmingly. I called it off when I found out, though much to my dismay, that the trichologist himself was as bald as an egg. “Physician heal thyself” I muttered while stomping out of the room. Then, like many on my ilks, one tried to divert attention from one’s fast receding hairlines by growing a beard and moustaches. But the facial fungus one managed to raise was pitiable to say the least, resembling the fuzz on a teenager’s

chin. And wearing a wig never appealed to me. I finally came to terms with my baldness, beaten on all fronts and even learnt to philosophize about it. I no longer waste time combing my hair or what is left of it, for one thing. Monthly haircuts are out. I need only occasional inexpensive trims. I have also learnt to put up with friendly ribbing. The other day, seeing my hairless cranium a friend jokes “A hair on head is worth two in the brush”. I retorted jovially, “Better a bald head than none at all “. I am reserving my carefully rehearsed punch line for the jibe that really stings me, however, I will snap then waspishly, “I firmly believe its what you have inside your head, rather than on top that really matters”. Surely that will silence my taunters. • A mind as free as ocean A heart as wild as wind An imagination as limitless as sky A spirit as unshakable as earth • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Don’t bite more than you can chew Part of a bigger plan and not looked at as external entities Push more work down my throat Lets be practical Lots of questions were going back and forth XYZ is drafted with LMN team ABC is looked at as an expert Shifting tabs Growth strategy, fire-fighting Dynamics was different You are already on the radar as a good source. The Economic Times • If it was just another list we were talking about, this headline would have been loud, bright, bold and in eighty font size. But this is the list of hundred most powerful CEOs and everyone knows, power does not have to raise its voice. Everybody fudges a little bit on social networking profiles. I may have to kiss a lot of frogs, but finally I will find my prince. I have done my share of walking on the wild side Where each shloka will give you solace and each mantra will elevate Cracking a whip on somebody China’s economy has bounced back, wages have followed the suits. Letting wages rise on the expense of profit would allow workers to enjoy more of the fruits of labor. But a growing tribe of food stylist, photographers and bloggers has gone much further by equating decadent food to sexual gratification. Whether it is Katrina Kaif sipping on a fruit drink or a Mumbai restaurant menu that quotes XYZ, gastro erotica seems to be the only way forward. The suggestive way in which the food is plotted at restaurant or the way telegenic Nigella Lawson licks melted chocolate off the manicured finger tip validates Freud’s famous prediction that food and sex would go together like breast feeding and the Oedipus complex. The worst abuse of the Bush year has been repudiated but the question about X or Y persists. A recent study, however, challenges this idea. After the spellbinding opening ceremony and a stirringly surge in medal tally, the mood in the capital was expectedly upbeat. This time traffic moved smoothly and metro trains kept their tryst with timings. The segments too, despite their splendor and magnitude, failed to enthrall, many were left with empty feeling, even if they did not feel let down. One

final blast in the end, though, made up for the lack of luster. But it paled in front of the show compiled by Glasgow. Suresh Kalmadi, the man of the moment, however, ironic that may sound, made it a point to thank everybody who would make a difference, rather than those who had already made a difference. He even thanked Lalit Behnot, allowing the crowds to break out into derisive laughter one last time. The first target was already been achieved, but the second number two spot was still very much up for the grabs. Could she do an encore? In course between the whole sales buying and retailer’s getting it to the local market there are transport cost, wastage and so on. I have to make a terrible choice here. I have to choose between lesser of two evils. Lack of proper hygiene habits exposes your body to more germs, thus leading to weak immune system. Habits like brushing your teeth twice daily; washing your hands before eating and keeping your nails neat and tidy can go a long way, keeping infections at bay. Do we idolize too easily? Why do our celebrities wilt under scrutiny? Are we too quick to hero worship and equally quick to trash our icons? Are we a nation that here worships people too easily and puts them on a pedestal. Shashi Tharoor, Tiger Woods, Salman Khan, when they fall, we wash our hands off then just as quickly. Fallen heroes, power that corrupts does public adulation make our icons vulnerable and stunt their personal growth. Underneath all these fuss, they still test the basic fundamentals Survivor’s guilt is a mental condition that occurs when a person perceives himself to have done wrong by surviving the traumatic event when others did not. Yet the wit of his pen, the astuteness of his observations and the remarkable ability with which he puts his point across is amazing. Are you living a good life? Learn a skill Have a goal that fires your imagination and makes you feel alive as you pound away at it. Says author Chetan Bhagat, it could be a learning skill,

getting a qualification, a promotion or your health related goals. Without goals life becomes directionless and even with all the money and comforts in the world quite dissatisfying. When the goal is achieved, set a new one. Don’t kill yourself over it, but keep making efforts to reach it. • • • • • • This is obvious that as a beginner you may not be able to zero in specific research area but if you can give examples that will add values to your answers. An academic researcher is calibrated from the yardstick of his research paper published. I am not well informed to answer that right away This is an ever evolving question and I have no one word to answer that. Productivity is important not the timings. High growth is back, moreover, the high growth is well dispersed which augers well for its substantiability through two thousand eleven and beyond. Alongside this buoyancy, there are also some adverse developments. There are risks that will have to be managed, if the high growth of Two thousand ten to be sustained or bettered in this year. The immediate worry is inflation. The more things seem to change, the more they remain the same. The growing importance of India in a post recession world was underlined in last year. Leaders from all over the world came calling within a span of less than six month. It was time for high diplomacy, friendly gestures, stirring speeches, great photos and some serious business. Air travel in India, that has seen galloping growth in the past decade, was jolted by the countries worst plane disaster since ninety six. The stormy events that led to Modi’s ouster. Our kirana shops teach us the invaluable lesson or austerity by making us buy less in order to spend more. And he did not have to try much to keep his words. They were also status symbols so much so that it did not matter if you had a cheap BandW TV or an expensive color one; you had graduated into the next rung of the social ladder, if you had one of those antennas sticking out of your roof. Women in china are under pressure to appear thin, if they are to have any chance of lending a role. Banished words – Terms so overused, misused, hackneyed they deserve to be sent to a permanent linguistic trash can in the year ahead. PCO took more like the remains of the historical monuments dilapidated and deserted. But that was then. It is not rational but prejudiced thought. I am not well informed to answer that right away. Most of the cynics would take it as a case of sour grapes. Besides FII is a fair weather friend and can desert the nation which is what is happening with India right now. Instead of competing in the same product market if company chooses a product market scope not covered by other, chances of success would be more. Lack of X, Y and variety of other factors has led many SEB into sickness. The aggregate losses of SEB more than quadrupled in the last decade. It’s a blatant travesty of justice. Traditional socio-economic analysis tools are ill equipped to deal with the constraints that X and Y places on social and economic interaction in online social networks. Some of the reasons of the disastrous performance of SEBs are increasing gap between tariff and cost. This prompted the GOI to initiate the reform with following objectives. One to break up the monolithic structure, to create a regulatory mechanism, to encourage greater participation. The instances of three hundred plus targets chased down in a single day even on flattest of tracks are rare. Before I get started I want to gather all the best advice I can. Sharing, listening and engaging are key traits of leadership. To educate leaders who make a difference in the world. What makes that mission especial, considering that other business schools make similar pledges, is the meaning that we put into those words, not the words themselves. When we say “educate leaders” what kind of leaders are we talking about? He asked. We have to recognize that the people only call someone a leader if they feel confident about his/her competence and character. Competency comes from mastery of specific knowledge. Character means that Harvard Business schools are ethical, not simply in the sense that they don’t lie, cheat or steal. What people look for in character is “someone who believes that it is important to create value before you claim value, an attribute many business leaders have been criticized of lacking in recent years. Value Chain Analysis The value chain for any firm in any business is a linked set of value creating activities all the way from basic raw material sources to the ultimate end use product delivered into final customer’s hands. One of the key aspects of VCA is recognition that organizations are much more than a random collections of machines, money and people. Moreover, these resources are of no value unless deployed into activities and organized into routines and systems, which ensure that product, people and services are, produced which are valued by final customer. Try not to measure how successful you are by what your friends are earning. Set your own personal benchmarks for success. Avoid stumbling in and out jobs in rapid succession. It looks bad on CV Young, single with money to blow and your whole life ahead of you. Still a lot of youngsters seeking solace in spirituality. Crisis crop up when there are no clear answers to the “twenties triangle” who I am, what do I want and how do I get it? Not knowing the answer of those questions leads to the feeling of panic, confusion or lack of motivation. It is a cross-road in life, a time when real world hits and you feel like you are faced with decision you do not know how to make. Unfortunately, degrees do not come with the instructions for the real world. That would probably have come in handy. She blames her confusion on the fact that she is interested in everything and committed to nothing. Many job interviews would go well till the point they asked me why I jumped so much. The fallout of using different names/accent at work leads to an identity crisis. Spoilt of choices.

Despite the setbacks, the couple has not lost their spirit. It may seem like a long road ahead, but it is also clear that the couple is willing to go the distance. Sometimes you can find honor at the strangest places. Some events create history and change the course of mankind. This is one restaurant where Goa’s laid back attitude is visible. Luck will run out but talent will not. Survive something which would confound mere mortals. The authorities have also sought to clean the nature of Chinese academic culture. Many journals which publish the shoddy or plagiarized work will be shut down. Many other journals have begun to publish in English on the grounds that this is the only significant international scientific language. In the last century the USSR gave Americans a real fright when they launched sputnik, sent the first man into the space and showed that soviet republic has the potential to beat the west. Today as the funding for science falls victim to budget cuts and government spending restraint, the Chinese are now at the cutting edge of technology in many areas. Chinese work on solar energy is widely regarded as world beating. Furthermore the Chinese are placing their considerable financial reserves where there rhetoric is. This is a country where sport heroes and movie stars are idolized. They are role models with larger than life personas and public images. Like it or not, what these personalities do and say has an inordinate influence on large segments of their fans, many of whom might not be old enough to have developed firm perspective and personal code. Beer is the proof that God loves mankind. Working hard is important. But there is something more important than that – Believe in you. Stop whining and take it like a real man Some people are born great; some have greatness thrust upon them. Here is your moment. Bigger you are, harder you fall I am made up of wax, what are you made up of. Lack of openness in people prefers plain straightforward and obvious, over the complex, ambiguous and subtle. Extrovert – tendency to seek stimulus in the company of others. Unlike conventional forms of camouflage, the images on the wall would change in concert with the changing environment, always ensuring that vehicle remains disguised. My due apologies to vegetarians who got served six spring onions under an exotic disguise. Carrier counselors say job seekers should go for no frill self-presentation. Loose the adjectives especially the superlatives and focus on evidence. The trend is really catching on.

One size does not fit all It undeniably produces opportunities, but these are limited to mundane. The solution then is the renewed emphasis on ethics, not the other way round. Transferring responsibility out of human hands produces a society of childlike people. Freed from the responsibility of making decisions they will loose the ability to act ethically. Spooked by cold market plunges. I want that education by which character is built, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded and by which one can stand on one’s feet – Swami Vivekananda. Lord protect me from my friends, I can take care of my enemies. Reduce stress, be calm, and take evasive action. Swallow your ego What price for violence? Death, jail, penalty nothing you need or expensive lawsuits. Avoid confrontation, if possible. If challenged, get out of the way even if you are right. Engineers who fail in technology try their hands in management. While the power sector in India has witnessed a few success stories in last year, the road that lies ahead of us is dotted with, challenges that result from the gaps that exist between what is planned versus what the power sector has been able to deliver. This document highlights and quantifies some of these gaps and attempt to analyze the problem. Understanding these core issues and risks of the power sector help in identifying the opportunities that lie ahead, for example why is power sector participation an important requirement. Once we break the problem down and identify the bottleneck, we may be able to better understand the challenges that such large projects pose. While there may be heavy dependencies on equipment suppliers and challenges around logistics and work-front availability with the right in time applications of project management principles along the life cycle of the project, one can strive to achieve increased project completion against baseline. Certain best practices around stake-holders management. Current scenario and opportunities ahead. If active leadership is the ability to successfully integrate and maximize available resources within the internal and external environment for the attainment of organization or societal roles. “Leadership is a matter of intelligence, trustworthiness, courage, humaneness and discipline. Reliance on intelligence alone results in rebelliousness. Exercise of humaneness alone results in weakness. Fixation on trust results in folly. Dependence on the strength of courage results in violence. Excessive discipline and sternness in command results in cruelty. When one has all five virtues together, each appropriate to its function, and then one can be a leader.

The west still makes use of the technologies created by Indian Scientists. But science in today’s India is in a sorry state of affairs. The translation of good science and technology into products still remains the challenge. And young talent prefers to harness their skills abroad rather than in India. Just like watering the root of a tree automatically nourishes its branches and leaves similarly; addressing the foundation principles will nourish the features and skills of effective teaching. The problem might be temporarily hidden, only to return later with a vengeance. A teacher must personally manifest such principles of character ethic as humility in erudition and success, tolerance towards others mistake, courage in pursuit and dissemination of truth, as well as simplicity and contentment in ones work. Learning is not merely a development of skill set; in involves molding of thoughts, analysis and attitude; inculcating a zeal for learning and long term character development. Communicating information, i.e. in most distant learning programmers is relatively simple and could be achieved without much personal touch. Classroom teaching goes beyond the transmitting of information from the teacher to the student. Effective learners on this platform, students can be challenged with thoughtful exercises, given innovative assignments and induce to work honestly in teams. I bow down to your expertise dear friend. An engineer may be low on social skills but does not lack brain and brawn despite her apparent timidity. A bit of chopping, sifting and editing would have worked wonders for the film. No One Killed Jessica NOKJ is a film that unleashes a myriad of emotions in you. The film makes you feel angry, sad, frustrated, and bitter about the umpteen flaws in our administrative and legal machinery. But more than all this, it fills you with hope and confidence about your own self. NOKJ reaffirms the power and efficacy of the ordinary man who can and must make the difference in a dismaying world. That’s the message the film throws out loud and clear at a time when the state of the nation is to edifying. The pitfall in making a film that draws its drama from real life is many. This could easily have turned out to be a documentary. But kudos to the film makers and performers for infusing whole lot of soul and body in the film. Watch Balan’s body language and her aimless travels in Delhi public transport and you will understand how common man survives in India, against all odds, albeit with courage and dignity. He is the cop who unabashedly takes the bride and yet does any and everything to fight for justice. The film has impeccable first half and could do with some editing in the second half.

Issue: Baby born from embryo frozen two decades ago

Counterview: Scientists have announced that a baby boy was born recently to forty two year old women from an embryo frozen twenty years ago. Not surprisingly, the idea of frozen embryos has found instant takers. Its votaries defend it on the ground that it will allow greater freedom to career oriented women to decide about their pregnancy. However, there cannot be a more bankrupt idea where the joy of motherhood is postponed for the sake of a career. That’s especially the case when medical science shows that greater complications can be associated with late motherhood. Moreover, a society with privileges career over parenthood cannot prosper. Let’s not disturb a healthy natural process such as birth. A positive child birth is not only spiritually more fulfilling, but can strengthen the mother child bond. Also the difference between consuming a medicine and a meal ought to be maintained. In Vitro fertilization and embryo transfer were designed as medical process to give infertile couples a chance to establish a pregnancy. What would have been an elective therapy to be used in extraordinary situation is now becoming norm. Furthermore, there are ethical questions surrounding the future of leftover embryos. They are living beings that are not implanted but are frozen. How do we dispose of such human lives, which now run into million in advance countries like UK and US? Even worse, the inter-generation donation will complicate and spoil family relation. For instance, how do we cope up with the situations when an infertile daughter uses the eggs of her mother to give birth to her own half-brother or sister? How would we answer a daughter who questions why she was left frozen as an embryo for decade? It is difficult to evade such ethical and religious questions. Society must make laws regulating this domain. Favor: Consider the benefit of such a procedure. It would make the choice between a career and raising a family far more fraught for women than for man given that it is more difficult for the former to conceive after a certain age redundant.

There is view that China’s internal political and ethno-religious problem, its aging population and its peculiar state led crypto capitalist economy will singly or in combination constraint its elevation to the world’s preeminent power. However, we should remember that before china, both the US and UK had internal problems prior to their rise. Those problems did not fundamentally stop their ascent. When we arrive in Delhi, he will set foot in the Indian capital as a leader of the next superpower if not the next global hegemonic. Whatever we may say about Indian economic growth, it is highly unlikely that our country will be in the same position. The problem here is that given china’s economic links to these countries it is hard if not impossible for them to line up against it in an overt, effective way. There are a number of bilateral issues that bring the two of us into conflict - Territory, Tibet, river waters and Pakistan, principally New Delhi could simply give Beijing more or less what it want on these. The problem is that China may want so much that it will not be possible for India to make sufficient concessions. In any case, even if we can deter the china from aggression, we may not prevent it from shaping world politics, as the US has done for the past century. This suggests that perhaps the best thing we can do is that we are doing, namely negotiate relentlessly with China, refused to be provoked by it, engage with other states without allying against our northern neighbor, built our economy and internal political resilience and deter aggression. • • Congratulate you for a great run in trying conditions. The problem is now you have upped the bar for most of us. We will have to first bridge the aforementioned supply deficit and then meet the increasing energy consumption requirement. To do this, investments aggregating US Dollar hundred need to be mobilized towards the energy sector in next five years. Despite the prevalence of an inherent advantage in the form of solar insulation, the potential for solar energy is virtually untapped in India. The companies with traditional competitive models are experiencing diminishing returns and scale benefits can no longer be taken for granted. Companies must go beyond the obvious in order to find new sources of profitable growth and mention their competitive edge. Toast for the jobs that pay the rent. You run the errands. Its divine, deal with it. People die for this and you deign for this. You cannot continue to do the same effort and expect different results. Extrovert: Introvert:: Energetic/Outgoing: Shy/Reserved

Neurotic such that Compassionate : Cooperative :: Shy: Reserved Introvert people are those whose energy tends to expand through reflection and dwindle during interaction. Introverts tend to be more reserved and less outspoken in large groups. They often take pleasure in solitary activities such as reading, writing. In fact social networking sites have been a thriving home for introverts, where they are free from formalities of social conduct, and may become more comfortable blogging about personal feeling they would not otherwise disclose. So should a techie have done an MBA? Well techies of the world like Steve Wozniak who designed the first PC, or Larry and Sergey who worked on the Google algorithms are not people whose first concern is the consumer. They want to create. It is the same creative urge there was in a Van Gough or a Beethoven. They create for the sake of creating, not for consumption. But if you want to make a business out of it and run a company, you always need to think of the other angle – the consumer angle. What is the value the technology adds to me, the consumer? The MBA gives the techie this perspective. So now, even when I use my techie side to create, the question of “Who is the consumer and how does he see it is never forgotten.” In case a techie still doesn’t want to get into anything like an MBA and still wants to start-up, my advice would be to have a partner, who can think of the consumer angle. This is vital. Little Manhattan Wall street
