he Delaware Valley Art League announces the opening of its Winter Show at Penn Medicine at Radnor, 250 King of Prussia Road in Radnor, PA. The exhibit of over 80 paintings will be on display until March 12, 2011. This show was juried by Neil Driebelbis, art educator and artist. e all know that the story of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker ™ is imagined in the dream of a little girl. When the Pennsylvania Pennsylvania Ballet’s 42nd proproduction opened on December 4th, a fantastic dream came to life for another little girl on stage at the Academy of Music. Annika Bergofin took her first formal ballet class last February at Philadelphia Studio Ballet in Haverford. Within a few months of starting she was moved to a higher level. This was positive encouragement that boosted her confidence—much needed because things weren’t going as well in school. Annika has a learning learning disability – dyscalculia dyscalculia – that is specific to math. Even though she had been talking talking in full sentences since she was one year old and showed great maturity and imagination for her age, first and second grade math were not clicking for her, leading to frustration and anxiety that affected almost everything in her her life. Like many other creative, intelligent children, Annika didn’t fit neatly into a box, or on a bell curve for that matter. Her parents hoped to find a school that would embrace her obvious artistic strengths, restore her self-esteem, and help her learn in a way that would work for her. They found that in AIM—Academy In Manayunk. There was great buzz about AIM. But, their biggest question was about the math curriculum. Were the resources for a math learning disability as strong as those for reading? Would the teachers celebrate the fact that Annika was real-

oyce Burd and Jane Brooks were honored to receive The Eden Award, named for Judith S. Eden, for their extraordinary Dancing Classrooms Philly programs. The Eden Award was presented on Sunday, December 12, 2010 by the Advisory Board and Gala Committee of Enchantment Theatre Company (ETC). The Eden Award was established in 2009 to recognize their core

values of originality, imagination, transformation, and community, all great qualities of Dancing Classrooms Philly. Burd and Brooks launched Dancing Classrooms Philly as a vehicle for teaching civility and respect for self and others. To date, Dancing Classrooms Philly has reached nearly 4,600 Philadelphia fifth graders in more than 90 public,

t the December 8th Special Board of Commissioners Meeting, an ordinance to create a Lower Merion Human Relations Commission (LM-HRC) was unanimously approved. Municipalities are authorized under the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act to form local commissions. Lower Merion’s

E D U C A T I O N N E W S Episcopal Academy Community Performs Days of Service T

he Episcopal Academy’s community service program encourages members of the school community, including students, parents, faculty, and staff to get involved in their community. Approximately 93% of the student body participates in Episcopal’s community community ser vice program which is voluntary. The “Days of Service” for the fall were overwhelmingly successful! Parents and students (11th, 12th, and 6th grade) made an enormous impact at SHARE, Cradles to Crayons, Christ Church, Northern Home for Children, Willistown Conservation Trust, Broad Street Ministry, Cosacosa Art-at-Large, Fairmount Park, Philabundance Philabundance,, Emerald Street Urban Farm, The Philadelphia Zoo, Neighbors in Action, West Philadelphia Alliance for Children, Riverbend Environmental Education Center, and MANNA. Students cleaned up neighborhoods, parks, and nature trails; planted trees, bushes, and native plants; sorted donations of clothing and Performing Days of Service are sixth graders, fr om left – Emma toys; packed food boxes for hundreds of people; helped out Howley of Newtown Square, Lee Lee McNeil of Chester Springs, in classrooms across West Philadelphia; and more. They lexa D’Ambrosio of St. Davids, Savannah Lee of Haverford, also served dinners to the hungry, helped students with ndrew Chi of St. Davids, Denny Howell of West Chester, Alex  homework, taught guitar lessons, and collected thousands McLaughlin of Glen Mills, Jack Brown of Newtown Square, Abigail  of dollars for UNICEF. A Little Girl’s Dream Comes True

Suzanne Slenn, selected her to audition for the Pennsylvania Ballet’s production of The  Nutcracker. She landed two roles. he’s an angel in the sugar plum fairy scene—that particular dance involves complicated patterns across the floor and ricky timing in terms of counting the music; a true test of Annika’s newfound math skills. Her bigger part is that of the oungest grandchild party girl—it’s a prestigious role for the younger girls and she’s by far the youngest. The dance is ery advanced and requires a lot of ballet experience, poise, and intense memorization for an eight year old! When asked what they would want other parents of children like Annika to know, Lisa and Bill Bergofin simplythem reply, “Everyand child should have an opportunity to of learn. It’s kid’s differences that make special lead to new thinking. And some the greatest minds and accomplishments throughout history belong to those who learned differently. The Main Line Antiques Show

The Main Line Antiques Show opened with a Preview Party November 19, 2010, a the Radnor Valley Country Club, 555 Sproul Road, Villanova. This year’s featured Loan Exhibit and Lecture Program was entitled “Visiting the Main Line – Railroad Ties.” It offered a unique blend of antique railroad memorabilia and a memorable walk-through history of the Pennsylvania Railroad illustrating how the suburban towns sprang up along the railroad’s “Main Line.” Thirty distinguished East Coast dealers offered for purchase a wide selection of fine 18th, 19th and 20th century antiques and art – ceramics, textiles, pewter, porcelain, silver, silver, estate je welry, glass, furniture, decorative arts, prints and more. Honorary co-chairmen were Mrs. S. Matthews V. Hamilton, Jr. of Bryn Mawr and Mrs. J. Maxwell Moran of Paoli. The show chairman was Nicholas Vandekar. The show was held November 20 & 21, 2010. The Main Line Antiques Show is a major fundraising event for Surrey Services for Seniors. Proceeds from the show support the work of Surrey Services for Seniors in providing home health care, transportation, meals, special programs and more to older neighbors in need, regardless of ability to pay.

The Center for Autism presented its Small Miracle Award Dinner, November 10, 2 010, at the Hyatt Regency Philadel Dinner, phia at Penn’s Landing, 201 South Columbus Boulevard. The Dinner honored Governor Edward G. Rendell with the Small Miracles Award and Jean Ruttenberg with the Lifetime Achieve ment Award. Governor Edward G. Ren dell received the Smal Miracles Award in recognition of his many contributions to children with disabilities and advancing autism services throughout Pennsylvania. Jean Ruttenberg, former executive director of the Center for Autism, received the Lifetime Achieve ment Award in appreciation of her years of service and com mitment to individuals with autism and their families. Rober J. Murphy, Jr., Esq. is Chairman, Board of Directors. Proceeds from the 17th Small Miracles Awards Dinner will support the Center’s evaluation and treatment services for people with autism throughout Philadelphia.
