Defining Service in Today’s World – Do We Give Until Nothing is Left?
best-selling author and internationally recognized advocate. “We must always treat ourselves with infinite kindness—service, true loving service, flows from that,” he continues. Swiller, who will be speaking at Rosemont College on April 13, lives a life full of service: to the deaf and disabled, to people suffering in Africa, and to soldiers returning from war. “Giving, giving, giving until nothing is left? I’ve been there and you can’t do it that way,” he states. What he has done with his life, in the face of many challenges, is humbling. He’s been a hospice worker, a Peace Corps volunteer, a forest ranger, a sheepskin craftsman, a raw food chef, and a Zen monk, among other things. He has also been deaf since the age of four. “A successful life is not measured in account balances or poll results, but in harmony. And harmony comes from service,” espouses Swiller. “We are here to love and to find wonder and gratitude in all things—service can take us there.” The Unheard: A Memoir of Deafness and Africa is Swiller’s best seller. It’s his story of growing up deaf and living for two years in a rural African Village beset with contagious disease, endemic corruption and witchcraft, as well as an appalling lack of toilet paper. Finding ways to bring his experience and passion to the world and to the causes he is passionate about, Swiller is currently working at Gallaudet University, the national university for the deaf. He is leading the effort to secure more attention, care and understanding for the tens of thousands of young veterans returning from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan with severe hearing

Josh Swiller will be speaking at Rosemont College on April 13, 2011, at 7 p.m. He will discuss his unique experiences and how to navigate the emotional challenges of service – fatigue, frustration, martyrdom – in a presentation he calls “The Warrior Heart of Service.” This event is free and open to the public.

Jazz vocalist Joanna Pascale will perform a free community concert on April 17, from 3 - 4:30 p.m. at Tredyffrin Public Library.

hroughout history, people have been called to service out of social injustices, war, natural disaster, or to give voice to those who have none. There is so much need in today’s world, but relief organizations and governments can’t be the only source of aid. It won’t ever be enough. So everyday people adopt causes, something for which they feel overwhelming affinity and give it everything they have: emotionally, physically, and in some cases, financially. It’s exhausting. How do you forge ahead when you are just tapped out? “We must remember to include ourselves in those we serve,” says Josh Swiller, New York Times

Merion Concert Band to Present Spring Concert
Featuring Trumpet Soloist Catherine Getchell he Merion Concert Band will present its spring concert on Sunday, April 10 at 3 p.m. at the Harriton High School auditorium. The concert theme is “The Magnificent Trumpet,” showcasing the virtuosity of trumpet soloist Catherine Getchell playing Alexander Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto in Ab Major. Also, not to be missed, will be the performance of the Finale of Vasily Kalinnikov’s Symphony No. 1 with antiphonal brass choirs comprised of students and players from the tri-county area. A reception is planned following the concert. “Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto in Ab Major is one of the seminal works for trumpet,” according to Nathan Snyder, Conductor of the Merion Concert Band. The piece, completed in 1950, was premiered in the US by trumpeter Timofei Dokschitzer and has gone on to become standard in the trumpet repertoire and is a frequent audition piece at music schools including Juilliard. It has been described as a “flashy show piece,” but has its roots in the folk music of Armenia, where Arutiunian was born and currently lives. “I like this piece because it has such a range of moods, from angry to triumphant to sad to playful,” said Ms. Getchell about the Trumpet Concerto. After trying out several instruments at the age of nine, she felt a connection with the trumpet and thought, “This one’s for me!” She has stuck with it ever since and

On April 14, Mr. Barbis will provide an overview of new research and its application in the treatment of neuropathic pain. Dr. Supplee will address the healing power of groups in countering the isolation and depression that accompany living with chronic pain. Together, they offer new hope for those who are new to living with chronic pain as well as those who have a longstanding history of coping with it. The forum is sponsored by Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church’s Middleton Center and its “Living Beyond Pain” Support Group. The Middleton Center offers support groups, counseling services, spiritual direction, and special events such as this one. “Living Beyond Pain” forum will be held at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church on Thursday, April 14, from 7:00 8:30 p.m. Guest facilitators James Supplee, Psy.D. of Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital and John Barbis, MA, PT, a physical therapist with Main Line Health, will discuss new research in pain treatment and strategies for coping with chronic pain. The program is free and open to the public. For more than 70 million Americans, pain is chronic and the primary reason they seek medical care. It challenges their ability to live their lives to the fullest and its persistence and unpredictability can trigger depression, isolation and loss of control, making normal work or family life as they knew it impossible. Medicine still doesn’t know a lot about pain and how to treat it, but new research is redefining what “pain” is and how it affects us. Clinicians are now viewing pain as a disease, not just a symptom, that can affect the central nervous

“Mud, River, Stone” at The Stagecrafters
T
he Stagecrafters theater presents the political thriller Mud, River, Stone, by award-winning author Lynn Nottage, opening on Friday, April 8 for a three-weekend run. Its action unfolds somewhere in Africa, as two vacationing African-American Manhattanites, Sarah and David Bradley, take a wrong turn off the paved road and end up stranded during a rainstorm in a seedy Colonial-era hotel in the middle of nowhere, together with an assorted lot of both black and white strandees. Suddenly what started out as a romanticized journey to their roots has taken a detour into a bizarre and harrowing adventure. In this incisive and gripping thriller, by turns scary and sardonically funny, their experience takes on more and more absurd dimensions, forcing them to reflect on the eye-opening realities of contemporary Africa. Award-winning author Lynn Nottage (b. 1964) has several notable plays among her published work, of which her best known, Intimate Apparel, was produced at The Stagecrafters in 2008. She received the signal honor of the MacArthur Genius Grant in 2007 and the Pulitzer Prize for her latest play, Ruined, in 2009. Mud, River, Stone premiered in 1997 at Playwrights Horizons in New York City, to very favorable notices. Performance dates are April 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23 at 8 p.m., April 10, 17, 24 at 2 p.m. Tickets are priced at $15. (Thu. eve performances “2 for $20”). Students with valid ID $13 At-door. Groups of 15 or more are offered a reduced rate of $13 a ticket, paid in advance. The box office opens 45 minutes before each performance. For information call 215-247-8881; for reservations-direct call 215-2479913. The theater is located in the heart of Chestnut Hill at 8130 Germantown Avenue. For details visit www.thestagecrafters.org. A “Meet the Cast and Director” Q & A session will be held following the performance on Friday, April 15. All attendees that evening are welcome to stay.

over the years has played in numerous bands, orchestras, and other groups. These include serving as principal trumpet of the East Winds Symphonic Band, Edgewood Symphony Orchestra, and Yale Symphony Orchestra. In addition to serving as a member of the Merion Concert Band, she currently plays in the Main Line Symphony and is the principal cornet of Penn View Brass Band. She has also performed as a soloist with ensembles including the Washington Chamber Symphony, Yale Symphony Orchestra, Edgewood Symphony Orchestra, East Winds Symphonic Band, North Suburban Symphonic Band, and Penn View Brass Band. “What I most love about playing the trumpet is that it has such a range of expression,” said Ms. Getchell. “It can be loud and bombastic, triumphant, lyrical and beautiful, or screaming with passion. It can tell a joke or make you cry. And it demands the discipline of practice every day.” About the concert theme, the “Magnificent Trumpet,” Mr. Snyder said, “The trumpet itself has always held a mystique in the music world because of its seemingly unlimited usage and range. It’s versatile enough to be played in orchestras, bands, jazz ensembles and is used frequently as a solo instrument.” The Finale from Vasily Kalinnikov’s Symphony No. 1 promises to provide a grand finish to the concert. “The antiphonal brass choirs add an exciting element to an already great piece of music,” said Mr. Snyder. “They are used to augment the existing brass section in the band and truly overwhelm the audience with a ‘wall of sound.’ The two brass choirs set up on either side of the band and will sometimes play at different times imitating each other and sometimes play together producing that wall of sound.” The brass choirs will comprise players from Montgomery, Delaware and Philadelphia counties as well as students from Lower Merion and Harriton High Schools. “It is truly a community event,” added Mr. Snyder. Other pieces to be performed include Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, Dmitri Shostakovich’s Galop, Sleep by Eric Whitacre and the English Folk Song Suite by Ralph Vaughan Williams, with the “missing” second movement, Sea Songs. The April 10 concert is free and open to the public. There is ample parking and the facility is wheelchair accessible. For information, call 215-429-4142 or online visit www.merionconcertband.org.

iscover a world where endangered animals could advocate for their own survival. They’d blog, tweet, hoot, bleat and roar their message across the media landscape. The carnivores would hunt for publicity. The herbivores would march in peaceful herds. The insects would generate media buzz and sound bites. The birds would sing protest songs. Philadelphia Zoo in partnership with the worldfamous Jim Henson Company™ have created such a world in a multidimensional, multimedia, zoo-wide exhibition of feathers, fun and fur called X•tink•shun: A wild puppet X•perience, opening April 9, 2011. X•tink•shun, brought to life by the world foremost creators of fun, The Jim Henson Company™, features a cast of characters including: Didi the Dodo, Leo the Golden Lion Tamarin, Alfreda Cheetah, Iggle the Eaglet, Phibi Frog, The Douc and Igor the Tiger that inspires visitors with messages of conservation and saving species. X•tink•shun encourages guests to embark on a journey of discovery, encountering puppet performances on Bank of America Eco Stages situated throughout the Zoo. Each Eco Stage stars a puppet character that educates and engages their audience on the plight of its species. Each performance delivers an upbeat message that you can make a difference; your voice can be heard. Each message encourages the need for humans and animals to find creative ways to co-exist and change the world for the better. X•tink•shun’s overall message is one of appreciating and understanding wildlife. “X•tink•shun expands upon our important conservation work,” says Vikram H. Dewan, President and CEO of the Philadelphia Zoo. “The exhibit tells an important, relevant story in an entertaining and engaging way. Every child – and adult for that matter – can relate to the universal desire to protect our planet, this place we all call home,” says Dewan. An interactive component to X•tink•shun includes the Save Our Species Parade presented by SEPTA where guests will “march” multiple times per day among high-flying animal puppets and “rally” the message to take action against

Villanova University Art Gallery Presents Surrealistic Art of Doylestown’s Carol Barth
C
arol Barth’s journey in becoming a conceptual surrealist painter of transcendent themes took much of a lifetime. The Doylestown, PA, painter sums up her long night of seeking: “When I was 50, I looked at death and painted to survive; transitions in life and art were difficult to find. When I was 60, I learned to paint and painted to live; images of light filled my canvases, reflecting hope and strength, and sometimes beauty. I’m in my 70s now; I paint worlds of imagination, of a deeper communion and my ultimate union with time and space.” “Visions from the Source,” a retrospective of Barth’s lightfilled, ethereal canvasses, opens Friday, April 15, at the Villanova University Art Gallery with a free public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. to meet the artist. The gallery is located in the Connelly Center on the Villanova campus. Refreshments will be served. The exhibit continues to June 11. Featured in numerous shows in the Philadelphia area and elsewhere, this will be the award-winning artist’s first solo exhibit in a university. Once an impressionist landscape artist, Barth’s more recent canvasses present images of water, earth, sky, and the sun’s rays as symbolic of her interpretation of transitions in life and the ultimate transition of death. “Painting is my life force and transitions a part of my process. My use of value contrast in color intensifies the lights and the darks in my work. I paint from my heart, soul and imagination reflecting my own personal spirituality,” she says. Her presentation will feature four 60-inch paintings, medium and small works, along with a few charcoal and pastel drawings.) The exhibit’s “Visions from the Source” title derives from writings by Barth’s admired brother-in-law, Jesuit priest, poet and scholar J. Robert Barth, who founded the music and theater departments at Boston College and is credited with revitalizing the institution’s arts curriculum in the 1980s. His death from cancer in 2005 had a profound effect on the artist and her art. Rev. Barth is also the inspiration for the artist’s 4-foot by 5-foot oil on canvas, “The Stained Glass Window.” In his highly regarded 2003 book, “Romanticism and Transcendence,” Rev. Barth proposes the presence of a divine act in the poetic works of William Wordsworth and Samuel Coleridge, who heralded the Romantic Age in 19th century English literature. Paraphrasing the book’s prologue, the artist writes of her large painting: “The stained glass window and the light of the sun are intimately united so that we cannot perceive one without the other. This is what it takes when God and man become so united in love that they are perceived together as the rays that emanate from the sun remain one with it, as the water from the fountain remains one with its source.” At an age when many people are contemplating retirement, Barth was re-evaluating her art and moving away from the realism that she had been trained in and worked at for so long. “I learned to work with the images that came to my mind’s eye and finally began doing the work I was meant to do,” she says. The road getting to the level of personal expression she sought was long, hard and circuitous. For a time, she worked as a graphic artist for the System Planning Corporation outside Washington, D.C., a major research and analysis firm serving industry and government. The job was not the career goal that the Troy, NY, native had in mind when she got her bachelor’s degree in art from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1959. Says Barth: “It was a far cry from the painter I had hoped to become, but I was learning layout, photography, and technical drawing, as well as learning to produce quality work under deadline pressure.” She continued

Her work was included in numerous art galleries and exhibits, and she was winning notice. She studied extensively; at the Woodstock School of Art in upstate New York; the Vermont Studio Center, the United States’ largest international residency program for artists and writers, and at the Lighthouse Gallery of School and Art in Tequesta, Florida. In 1994, at age 56 – some 35 years after earning her undergraduate diploma – Barth received summa cum laude honors with her Master of Fine Art degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design where, “an incredibly eclectic and gifted group of artists and teachers opened my mind and heart to both a personal and an objective viewing of art and life.” After graduate school, she joined with other artists in launching a co-op gallery in Savannah and two years later opened her own gallery in Hobe Sound, Florida. In 1998 she left Florida for the small town of Brevard, NC, and set up her easel facing the mountain waterfalls of Pisgah National Forest. She lived, taught, painted, and exhibited her work in Brevard for six years, yet began to sense something missing in her personal life. Through the on-line dating site Match.com, Barth met and married John Lodholz of Doylestown. The Carol Barth Studio and Gallery is part of their home in Doylestown. Barth ponders the mysterious processes and forces from which her art has evolved, including the ability to see and interpret through her canvasses life transitions that she once found elusive. She is drawn to something said by Albert Einstein: “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.” The Villanova University Art Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Call for weekend and extended hours. For other art gallery information, call 610-519-4612. Carol Barth’s work presented in “Visions from the Source” may be previewed at www.artgallery.villanova.edu.

Juniors Ryan O’Shea of King of Prussia and Adam Swift of Audubon won a third place medal in the Dynamic Planet category in the high school division. Seventh Graders Alex Damien of Audubon and Shymal Patel of Norristown won a fourth place medal in the Battery Buggy category in the middle school division. In the Dynamic Earth competition participants were required to take a test on this year’s subject —the Earth’s Fresh Waters. In the Battery Buggy event participants had to design and build a moving, battery-powered vehicle capable of traveling a specific distance around a bucket and stopping as close to the ending point as possible. Nearly 35 high schools and 30 middle schools competed in the various science events at Cabrini College this year. The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events, which students prepare for during the year. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced among the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers, and technology. Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 science education, increasing male, female and minority interest in science, creating a technologically literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers. U.S. Surgeon General Joins Health Panel at Bryn Mawr College
.S. Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin will give a keynote address and join a panel of experts to discuss health care inequalities at the inaugural Kevin J. Robinson Forum for Social Justice and Public Health being held by the Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research in collaboration with the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. The event is free and open to the public and takes place on Monday, April 11, from 5:15 - 7:30 p.m. at Bryn Mawr’s McPherson Auditorium in Goodhart Hall, 150 N. Merion Avenue. Joining Benjamin for the panel discussion will be Associate Dean for Community and Minority Affairs Robert E. Fullilove, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health; Katherine C. Maus, director, CAPTA services, Philadelphia Department of Human Services; Donna L. Torrisi, founder of The Family Practice and Counseling Network in Philadelphia; Leslie Acoca, network executive director, Family Practice and Counseling Network; and Dr. David Rubin, senior co-director of PolicyLab, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The forum is named in honor of Assistant Professor of Social Work and Social Research Kevin J. Robinson, who died unexpectedly last year at the age of 40. Robinson’s work was part of a growing movement in the field of public health to value insights gained from qualitative research methods, as opposed to relying solely on the demographic or statistical approaches that have traditionally been privileged. Prior to the panel (from 4 - 5 p.m.) the GSSWSR will host a “Life Course” game, in which participants are led through an interactive experience designed to illustrate key concepts of the life course framework. The game is designed to confront the players with the effect of external factors such as resource availability on the course of an individual life. Factors considered are socioeconomic status, community resources and random acts. Because seating is limited, registration to participate in the Life Course is required.
