Tickets to London Assurance can be purchased online now at www.BrynMawrFilm.org. Sir Harcourt Courtley (Simon Russell Beale) is lured away from the epicentre of fashionable London by the promise of a rich and beautiful bride, Grace, forty-five years his junior. Arriving at Oak Hall, Gloucestershire, he marvels at this rural Venus until her charms are eclipsed by her hearty cousin, the foxhunting Lady Gay Spanker (Fiona Shaw). Meanwhile his disguised son turns up in flight from his creditors and falls head over heels for Grace. When Lady Spanker discovers the young couple, she needs little prompting from the visiting opportunist Dazzle to lead Sir Harcourt astray. Dion Boucicault, the Irish genius of London theatre in the age of Dickens, wrote London Assurance in 1841 and created, in Sir Harcourt Courtley and Lady Gay Spanker, two of the great comic roles of the English stage. In addition to Beale and Shaw, the cast also includes Mark Addy, Richard Briers, Paul Ready, and Michelle Terry. To date, the pilot season of NT Live has played to over 120,000 people in twenty-two countries. NT Live performances are filmed live at the National Theatre in high definition and broadcast via satellite to over 300 cinemas and performing arts centers around the world, live in Europe and some US cities, and time-delayed in countries further afield. The number of cinemas and performing arts venues participating in the venture continues to grow with each new screening. “We couldn’t have foreseen that the experimental NT Live season would be such a hit with audiences around the world, who are hungry to see our work in their local cinema,” says Career Seminar Nicholas Hytner. “Through NT Live we can respond immeA Career Seminar will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, 9:00 a.m. to diately to the sell-out success of London Assurance and 11:30 a.m. at the Radnor Financial Center, 150 N. Audiences will applaud the compelling, catchy and memorable music written by Samuel Willmott. Performances take place on July 21, 22 and 23 at 10: 30 a.m. and on July 22 at 7:30 p.m. The show is performed at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center located at 601 N. Lansdowne Avenue, Drexel Hill, PA. Tickets may be purchased anytime online at www.udpac.org or by calling the Box Office at 610-622-1189. Tickets for Children’s Theater performances are $5 - $8 (UDPAC members receive $1 discount). Visa and Mastercard are accepted. The performance runs approximately 60 minutes and is appropriate for children ages 4 and up. Audience members can meet the cast after the show. When she writes a report about a Viking explorer, she’s off and running on a voyage of discovery. Along the way she encounters a group of Norseman lead by Bothvar the ForkSplitter played by Tristan Horan of Havertown. After the librarian, Mr. Sigurd Torvaldsson, played by Sean Skahill of Springfield, shows her an ad for a real Viking ship, the tenacious Emma and her little brother, Ollie (Tim Braithwaite of Villanova), present their best offer to buy it for $128 in change, three Phillies baseball cards and a very sharp fox tooth. No one believes her when she announces she’s getting a Viking ship for her birthday, but Emma, who rarely doubts herself, perseveres. Author Judith Byron Schachner whose book “Yo, Vikings!” was published in 2002, based the tale on her young daughters who possessed a genuine Viking ship from the Leif Ericson Society in their Swarthmore backyard! Ms. Schachner began her career as an illustrator, first designing greeting cards. Later she took her portfolio to New York City, “knocked on a lot of doors,” and followed her dreams of illustrating children’s books. She began to write the stories and accompanied the stories with her own illustrations. She has become a New York Times best-selling author with the success of the “Skippyjon Jones” children’s book series. Ms. Schachner will sign copies of her books which will be available for sale at each performance. Director Marcus Stevens who wrote the musical version of “Yo, Vikings!” is originally from Wallingford and participated for many years in Upper Darby Summer Stage. Stevens earned a BFA in Theatre Arts from Point Park Conservatory of Performing Arts in Pittsburgh, PA. He is a member of Actors’ Equity Association, AFTRA, and the Dramatists Guild. An accomplished actor, Stevens is presently playing Motel in the Walnut Street Theater production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” As a writer, Marcus is the recipient of the Richard Rodgers Award for his musical Red, co-written with composer/lyricist Brian Lowdermilk. Red was also a finalist in the Eugene O’Neill Festival for New Musicals and for the TAMS New Voices Prize. Stevens wrote the book and lyrics for the children’s musical, “Elliot and the Magic Bed” which was originally commissioned for Upper Darby Summer Stage. This summer, the talented Mr. Stevens has the opportunity to participate in all three of his passions, writing, acting and directing. Summer Stage alumnus, Abby Shunskis of Upper Darby is the choreographer. Ms. Shunskis is a graduate of Long Island University Theater Program with her BFA in Acting. The musical director, Eric P. Thompson of Media, a Summer Stage alumnus, is a graduate of Catholic University of America with a major in musical theater and minor in drama. Costume designer John Davenport of Philadelphia graduated from the Philadelphia University of the Arts and recently was costume designer for the Long Island professional premiere of “Rent” after the national tour of “Hairspray.” Upper Darby Performing Arts Center features stadium seating, air-conditioning, and wheel-chair accessibility.

The Hospice team works to establish a companionship with their patients by reminding them that their remaining time can be meaningful and peaceful. Volunteers primarily focus on providing comfort, rather than a cure, to patients through this period of their lives. “For the Family” Craft Experience for Kids July 25
T
he Philadelphia Art Alliance opens its doors, every last Sunday of the month, for families looking to experience modern craft exhibitions together. The “For the Family” Sunday craft experience is designed for parents and children of any age who want to experience arts and culture as a family. The next installment takes place on Sunday, July 25 at noon. Admission to the event is free, but PAA graciously asks for a suggested donation of $10 per family. For this month’s family experience, PAA will focus on techniques used in Candy Depew’s installation for the Vanitas exhibition. Ms. Depew is a multimedia craft artist specializing in screen-printing on non-traditional surfaces. The craft activity will focus on screen-printing with a simplified version for kids using sponge painting. Kids and parents will be able to make unique screen-printed suncatchers on transparent paper, layering different designs using pre-made cutouts. Once complete, families will be able to take their completed project home as a memorable keepsake. Every last Sunday of the month during exhibitions, parents and kids can take an educational tour through the PAA exhibitions and partake in kid-friendly activities on the 3rd floor parlor space. With each changing exhibition, PAA will offer new educational guides and activities, in conjunction with the new themes and media covered in the exhibitions. This one-of-a-kind experience is sure to please families of all shapes and sizes. For information about this event or PAA, visit www.philartalliance.org or call 215-545-4302.

N

ew Horizons Senior Center hosted a festive Flag Day and Volunteer Recognition Luncheon for 90 older adults and community friends on June 11 at its Narberth facility. The Center, which was established in 1976, provides a wide range of supportive programs and services for area seniors. New Horizons is the only senior center in the region that is funded through private philanthropic support and which staffs its programs entirely with volunteers. Program Director Shelley Leiner and Board member The Hon. Kathleen Valentine presented certificates and gifts of appreciation to 75 volunteers, the majority of whom are seniors engaged in helping their peers. The Flag Day program began with a patriotic fashion show featuring Center members, who donned red, white, and blue in a “Salute to Uncle Sam.” Dorothy Foster of Ardmore, a member of the Center for 28 years, emceed and Glee Club Director Selma Savitz provided accompaniment. The award-winning New Horizons Glee Club capped the festivities with a “Stars and Stripes” musical revue. Narberth Cafe catered the luncheon and employees of Broadview Networks served the meal to the seniors, a volunteer service they provide year-round for New Horizons’ holiday luncheons. Dessert featured a Flag Day sheet cake, donated by Viking Pastries in Ardmore. The special event culminated with door prizes donated by Dairy Queen, Giannini Jewelers, Mapes 5 & 10, J.B. Merrick Apothecary, Narberth Cafe, Tango Restaurant, Tepper Pharmacy, and the Yoga Garden. To receive the center’s calendar of events or to learn about volunteer opportunities at New Horizons Senior Center, located at 206 Price Avenue in Narberth, call 610-664-2366 weekdays 9:15 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. or visit www.newhorizonsseniorcenter.org.
