CUNNINGHAM (Presbyterians) of Ballybay and Creeve, IRELAND

[A separate branch of the name to the pages above]

Samuel & Sarah Cunningham at the top of this sketch pedigree came to Creeve from Lisburn, the hotbed of the Ulster linen industry in the 18th century. Samuel
arrived as a linen lapper to work for the influential Jackson family who were foremost in establishing flax and linen production around Ballybay. Some 15 years
after Samuel’s death, his son Joseph married into the Jackson family as shown below. Unlike the Cunninghams of Aughnamullen (Church of Ireland), the
Cunninghams of Creeve were Presbyterians, although it is possible they embraced that denomination so as to integrate with the Jacksons, who were also active
anti-government conspirators and supporters of the Society of United Irishmen. By 1830 the demise of the local linen trade was well advanced and the Jacksons
were selling their mills and emigrating to America: it is noticeable that many of their mills were bought by their Cunningham partners who eventually suffered
bankruptcy as a result. Thus the Cunningham family of Creeve, apart from John Jackson Cunningham and his brother Joe, the Ballybay doctor, virtually
disappears from local records.
In an effort, finally, to establish some link between our Cunninghams of Aughnamullen and our neighbouring namesakes of Creeve, we have looked for
evidence of an earlier connection at Lisburn, from where Samuel and Sarah had come. Unlike so many Irish parishes, Lisburn has virtually complete records for
the relevant church denominations, but there was no evidence of any branch of the Cunninghams having been there at that time. We therefore conclude that no
connection between the two branches of the name existed in the period. This is reinforced by the difference in denomination and political affiliation, by the
educated background of James of Aughnamullen (1821-79) and his sons which indicates some privilege in their origins, and by the location of their farm
pastures half a mile away from the advantages for linen making of Lough Creeve, where Samuel and Sarah arrived at Ballybay to join the Jacksons.
