Dear New Graduate
Office of Development and Alumni Relations
The University of Western Australia
35 Stirling Highway
Crawley WA 6009
Congratulations on your graduation from the University of Western Australia. As a UWA graduate,
you can be proud of a degree that is recognised worldwide for its excellence.
With your degree you can now begin a career to use the skills you have worked so hard to acquire.
Exciting new challenges await you, whether you live in Perth or are travelling overseas to faraway
places.
We will keep you up to date with what is happening on campus and what your fellow graduates are
doing by sending you our magazine, Uniview. So remember to keep us informed of your activities and
watch for the magazine's "Grad Briefs" section to see what your friends are doing. Visit our website
at www.graduates.uwa.edu.au for further information.
You are now automatically a member of Convocation, the UW A Graduates Association (UW AGA),
which has direct input into the governance of the University. UWAGA also promotes professional
and social links through a wide variety of events and reunions, managed in collaboration with the
University's Office of Development and Alumni Relations.
A free lifetime UW A email address has been allocated to help you stay in touch with friends no matter
where you are. Networking is made easy and you will receive information about what's happening in
your faculty and at the University, particularly any events and reunions relevant to you. Register at
http://www.graduates.uwa.edu.au/.
If you travel overseas you can maintain contact with UW A graduates. There are branches of the UW A
Graduates Association in other states of Australia and South East Asia and we are developing links
with the UK, Europe and the USA. If you are in WA the University Club is a wonderful place to meet
fellow alumni. Why not consider joining now (enclosed in this pack is University Club membership
information for your convenience).
You are always most welcome on campus. It is your University and whether or not you come to a
performance, to use the sporting facilities or the Club, we hope UW A will remain a significant part of
your life.
Yours sincerely
Dr Suzanne Baker Peter D Leunig

Congratulations on completing your undergraduate studies at The University of Western Australia. This is
a momentous step towards an exciting career and the opportunity to apply the many skills you have
developed in your studies.
1 would like to take this opportunity to advise you of the postgraduate research opportunities available to
you at UWA. Postgraduate research provides students with transferable skills which help them gain
promotion within organisations. Many high-achieving candidates choose to undertake a research degree
because they have a drive to progress as far as they can in their chosen field. The continued challenge
and enjoyment of independent research are, for many, rewards in themselves.
Postgraduates from all areas experience a high rate of success in employment because the generic or
transferable skills required for success in a postgraduate research degree are the same skills in high
demand by employers. Successful completion of a research degree indicates to a prospective employer
that you have excellent project and personal management skills, you can think independently and,
crucially, solve problems and communicate effectively. For many graduates, the decision to undertake
further study is made after several years in the workplace, so keep this in mind.
For Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents and for New Zealand Citizens, the Research Training
Scheme (RTS) exempts candidates undertaking research Doctorates and Masters degrees from paying
tuition fees. For research Doctorates the duration of study is up to four years full time equivalent and for
research Masters, up to two years full time equivalent. Each year scholarship applications fall due in late
October. More information is available at http://www.postgraduate.uwa.edu.au/home/prospective/fees
Tuition fees are applicable to International students undertaking postgraduate research; however, there
are a number of scholarships available to you. These include the International Postgraduate Research
Scholarships (IPRS) and the Scholarships for International Research Fees (SIRFs) . Each year
scholarship applications fall due in late August. More information is available at
http://www.scholarships.uwa.edu.au/home/postgrad/international
If you would like more information about research degrees at UWA, please contact our Graduate
Research School at [email protected] or +61 8 6488 2807.

Dear Graduate
FACULTY OF
Engineering, Computing
and Mathematics
Congratulations on the successful completion of your engineering course!
As graduates of the University and the Faculty, you automatically become a member
of the Engineering Graduates Association (EGA). The EGA has over 5700 living
members and since 1916 over 5800 students have graduated.
Each year the EGA, through the support of its members and the Faculty, hosts a
range of events such as engineering reunions, lecture series and special functions.
These events provide opportunities for you to catch up with friends and staff and also
develop networks with other UWA engineering alumni. These connections between
our alumni are strong and continue to grow. Please visit the EGA website for more
information http://www.ecm.uwa.edu.au/for/alumni/ega
To keep you advised of recent developments within the Faculty and the UWA
engineering alumni community, we will send you three issues of The Engineering
Essential newsletter per year. Please keep your contact details up to date so that we
can continue to provide this service. To update your details please visit
http://www.development.uwa.edu.au/alumni relations/update my details
In 2007 we plan to launch UWA Engineering eNews. To receive this electronic
newsletter, please register your interest by e-mail to [email protected]
We are looking forward to setting up engineering alumni chapters in cities in Australia
and overseas. If you are interested in pioneering a chapter, please contact the
Faculty Development Officer - Quang Ly on (61 8) 6488 4772 or by email
[email protected]. There is already an engineering chapter in Sydney.
During your career you may like to act as an ambassador for the Faculty by
encouraging interaction between your company or organisation with UWA. Such
interactions enhance the education experience for the current students, maintain the
relevance of our courses and also work to the advantage of the company in a variety
of ways. Please contact the Faculty should your company or organisation be in need
of a research partnership, community development or simply wish to connect with
UWA engineering students.
Finally, if you are leaving the University to take up a job rather then going on to
further studies, you should bear in mind that postgraduate study options remain open
to you in the future. You will certainly be welcome back should you wish to diversify
your career options by studying towards a higher degree, such as Masters or PhD.
Information about such courses, including the entry requirements and scholarships,
can be found on the Faculty web page http://www.ecm.uwa.edu.au
We hope you will continue to stay in touch and participate in different engineering
events. Let us know where you are and what you are doing. I wish you every
success in your career and I hope that you will be able to attend your First Year
Reunion in November 2006.
Yours sincerely
Professor Mark Bush
Dean
