A familiar face will once again be sitting at the council desk come January.
Former Mayor Steve Grajczyk was one of
five residents to put their name in for the
seat that had opened up after Councillor
John Rempel resigned earlier this year.
Election Day was on Dec. 15 and Grajczyk unofficially won with 287 votes. He
was followed closely by Glenn Freeland
at 213; Nicole Gibbons, 137; Allan Auger,
95; and Jason Pollo with 66 of the votes.
The results remain unofficial until Dec.
19. At the next council meeting, Jan. 7,
Grajczyk will be sworn in.
“I would like to congratulate all of the
candidates for participating. I would like
to thank all of my supporters and I want
to remind everybody that I never made
any promises, but I did make a lot of
statements and I’m going to go to work
for the town and work with the mayor
and council the best I can,” said Grajczyk.
“I also want to wish everyone a Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year.”
Voter turnout was low with only 798
people voting out of the approximately
9,106 that are eligible, which works out
to about 8.76 per cent.
Returning officer Jennifer Sawatzky is
not sure how to see the voter numbers
increased. The election was advertised
as soon as it was announced; word was
spread by word-of-mouth, social media
and through other avenues.
“I think it’s pretty typical that by-elections see a lower turnout than regular
elections. I was expecting a lower turnout
just because of that fact,” said Sawatzky.
“We did have an advance vote as well
so we tried to give opportunity (to vote)
and we did institutional votes. We went
out to seniors homes and the lodge and
seniors areas to try and make it convenient for them to vote. We also had the
advanced vote, which we only had less
than a couple hundred people show up
for and then (Dec. 15) we had approximately 500 people come out. There’s lots
of opportunity.”
Approximately 2,500 people voted in
the last election, 2013, which is still low
when compared withan approximate
population of 13,000.

Bisons to play Germany, help out SAY
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The UFA Bisons will have the chance to play Germany on
Dec. 23, and after missing out on the opportunity to play an
international team last year, the boys are stoked.
“It’s a pretty cool feeling, knowing last year we didn’t do it,
instead we played the women’s national team which was still
pretty outstanding, they’re a good hockey team,” said Bisons
captain Shane Fraser.
Last season the Bisons had the chance to host an international game but after playing 11 games in November, 10 of
which were on the road, plus being a little banged up injurywise and a few other factors, it was decided to let the guys
rest and prepare for the Macs Midget Tournament.
“It’s not very often you get a chance out here in Strathmore
to see an international hockey team and these will be the best
of the best 17-and-under kids from Germany,” said Wayne
Hansen, general manager of the Bisons.
“The game is usually well attended, we would expect between 500 to 700 people to attend the game, depending on
people’s travel schedules.”
Fraser is looking forward to seeing the different style of
play the German players will approach the game with.
“People from different countries (they) have a different
style of play usually with European teams, more speed and
skill and here in Canada usually more physical and bigger
players. It will just be interesting to see how they play compared to our team the way they’re coached and the way Dan
has us coached,” said Fraser.
The Bisons are also using the game as a way to help spread
the word about SAY and help them raise money towards the
disc golf initiative.

SAY, the Strathmore Assembly of Youth has been around
for a couple of years now, but still isn’t quite as well-known
as they could be.
“I think it’s really good, I agree I don’t think there’s much
awareness of what it is and I think it is a great opportunity to
tell people about the disc golf course and get people to know
about it and attend it,” said SAY member Sabrina Kooistra.
“Our purpose is to, I guess you can say, improve the quality
of life of youth and kind of change the idea that there isn’t
anything to do in Strathmore,” said Kooistra.
“Because of our connection to the school … I thought that
this was probably the perfect opportunity and perfect chance
for them to get the info out there about what SAY is,” said
Hansen.
The Bisons have always used the international games as a
way to help out the community, rather than a way to generate money for the organization. Hansen’s son was a member
of SAY, and so when their name was brought forward as a
potential group to raise money for, to help with their disc golf
initiative, Hansen was in.
Disc golf is similar to regular golf, but what you use to
throw looks like a Frisbee, but is specialized for disc golf,
and players try to get it into a type of basket. The course will
start in Brentwood and end in the Birth Forest. There are a
number of different locations that will have baskets set up
for the game.
“I think its growing in popularity right now. We thought
that it would be a different opportunity for something to do
for people in Strathmore,” said Kooistra.
The game between the Bisons and Germany is scheduled
for Dec. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Strathmore Family Centre. Admission is $5 and all proceeds will be going to SAY and the disc
golf project.

Masons offer financial support
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Regional Arts Collective (SRAC) got a boost to their finances
on Dec. 9, when representatives of the
Masonic Foundation of Alberta and the
Strathmore Masonic Lodge presented
them with a cheque for $2,000.
“That was suggested to me by a member of Strathmore Lodge and then I told
him to bring up the application form
come to the meeting,” said Doug Barnard, a member of the foundation.
He explained that there are 14 districts that each have one representative
sit on the committee which helps determine which group(s) in their district
will receive a charitable donation of
$2,000.
Right Worshipful Brother Joe Bratton,
District Deputy Grand Master Alpha
District 2014 – 15, of Strathmore suggested SRAC as one of this year’s recipients.
“(We’re) super excited and very grateful. We’re going to try and maximize
those dollars to offer something for as

many people as possible at our festival,” said Brandy Hebbes, SRAC chair,
speaking of the annual Arts and Sounds
in the Park Festival held in September.
The Masonic Foundation of Alberta
is a charity group of the Masons. Each
year $30,000- $40,000 is budgeted to be
donated.
“We like to support a lot of different
organizations,” said Barnard.
Last year one of the donations made
in this district was to Rosebud Theatre.
The Masons also have the Masonic
High Education Bursary Fund.
“It’s for needy kids who want to continue their education,” said Ted Currie,
past District Grand Master.
“They don’t have to be a Mason, they
can be anyone so if you know someone get in touch with a Mason and we’ll
give an application, or you can go to
the Alberta Masonic website,” said Barnard.
There are 38 bursaries awarded each
year in the amount of $5,000, making
it the second largest donation of bursaries in the province, second only to the
government, said Currie.

Ladies … get your livestock on!
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Counties of Kneehill, Mountainview, Wheatland and Rocky View, in
conjunction with the M.D. of Bighorn,
Cows and Fish, Foothills and Forage
Grazing associations, are hosting a Ladies Livestock Lessons retreat on Jan.
16-17 at the Strathmore Travelodge.
The retreat will be a great opportunity for farming women, new and experienced, to connect with one another
and to gain knowledge of what is happening in the industry right now.
“This year’s retreat will consist of a
Canadian Beef Market update, Livestock Emergency Preparedness and Response, First Aid for Livestock, Weed ID
and Tag Reading. This will be complemented with good food, wine tasting
with Fieldstone Fruit Wines, entertainment on the Friday evening and Yoga
Saturday morning,” said Lorelee Grattidge, Agricultural Specialist for Mountain View County.
Since 2007, the Red-Bow Alliance,
which is comprised of organizations
and counties, put on two events each
year to improve farm management.
“Since 2007 the committee has hosted two annual events, Ladies Livestock
Lessons and Ranching Opportunities.
These events both promote on-farm
best management practices,” said Grattidge. “Ladies Livestock Lessons is held
in a new location in the region each
year. The event takes the form of a twoday retreat designed specifically for
women working in the ranching/farming industry.

“The workshop includes indoor classroom time, hands-on sessions and lots
of time for socializing and networking.”
The agenda does have modifications
each year, but the topics that are discussed stay the same.
“The agenda changes from year to
year, but often includes sessions on riparian health and tame or native range
health and management, plant and
weed identification, species at risk,
low-stress livestock handling and herd
health,” said Grattidge.
To register for the lessons, you can

Men can get breast cancer too. Here’s a few things
to watch for: nipples turning inward, puckering of
the skin in the breast area; nipples becoming red or
scaly; discharge from the nipples. See your doctor
for a check-up. Early detection means there is more
options for early successful treatment.

Bladder control isn’t always easy for some people.
Sometimes it’s just a sneeze, a cough or sudden
laughter that will cause urine to flow and it can be
embarrassing. To have better bladder control, keep
your weight in control. Don’t smoke. Smoking can
double your chances of developing incontinence.
Keep active. Keep coffee and alcohol consumption
down. These can irritate the bladder.

Strathmore’s radio
station approved

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Contributor

Strathmore’s radio station is a step closer to reality after
gaining approval from the CRTC. Clear Sky Radio will be
launching the Wolf 104.5 FM, a country music station in the
coming year.
There is still quite a bit of work to do, including looking
for office/studio space and then negotiating leases for both
the studio and transmitter tower. Once those matters are figured out, equipment will be ordered to begin the construction of the studio and transmitter site.
“Strathmore as you know has been growing significantly
in recent years and is now at the size it can support its own
dedicated radio service. We’ve found over time that communities like Strathmore that are in close proximity to big
cities like Calgary can obviously listen to a lot of radio, but
the content isn’t local at all,” said Paul Larsen, president of
Clear Sky Radio.
“Residents crave news from their own community, local
sports and community updates, weather and road conditions. The Calgary stations have to focus on the city, so we
will fill a niche by focusing on the community of Strathmore.
Much like how the town supports local newspapers. Certainly residents can read the major Calgary papers, but the
local papers focus on what’s happening in Strathmore. Local
radio will be the same idea.”
Clear Sky Radio Inc is based in of Lethbridge where they
currently have a station, and they have another in Medicine
Hat. There has been approval by the CRTC to add a second
station in Lethbridge, and the launch of a new station across
the mountains in Cranbrook, B.C.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~Alfred & Marje Johansen
JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Alfred’s father, Andrew Johansen, and his forefathers were farmers in Sonder Hygum, Denmark.
Andrew and his brother Jacob worked at the mines
in Greenland before immigrating to Canada in
1922, and started grain farming in the Hussar/Standard area.
His mother Marie Jacobsen, also came from
Sonder Hygum and followed Andrew to Canada
seven years later, in 1929, marrying him later that
year. Alfred and his twin sister,
Elna, were born in Bassano in
April 1931. Another sister Margaret
(Flewelling) and brother Harry followed. Alfred started his education
at Sunny Range, in the one-room
school, and along with several
other children rode to and from
school on horseback! The school
had a barn for children to leave
their horses in during class! He attended Hussar
and Standard Schools, before graduating at the age
of 16 to go farming with his Dad. In 1947, Andrew,
Marie and their children moved to Carseland to
continue farming, while brother Jacob remained at
Hussar.
Marje’s grandfather - Harry Groves - moved from
Swainsby, England to Canada in 1894, where he
worked at several jobs before he met his future wife,
Jean Patterson, who had been born in Northampton, England, and came to Canada with her parents, brothers and sisters in 1886. Harry and Jean
were married in 1898, and four years later moved
to Strathmore where they started farming/ranching and raising their ten children. Their third oldest
was James Groves (Marje’s Dad) and he was born
in 1906. Her grandparents on her mother’s side,
Pete and Christine Voigt had moved from Denmark
to Oregon, where Mabel, (Marje’s mother) was born
in 1912, as well as a sister Esther. They moved to
the Carseland area in 1916, and had seven more
children! In 1936, during the dirty thirties, Pete and
Christine left with all their belongings and their

seven youngest children on a truck, heading west,
and ended up in Aldergrove, B.C. where they started a gas station/convenience store/ and orchard.
Mabel had married Jim Groves in 1929, and they
farmed/ranched north of Carseland, where they
raised their five children. Esther was also married,
so she didn’t accompany the family to Aldergrove.
Marje is the third oldest and was born in 1933, and
had two brothers, Jim Jr. and Roy Groves, and two
sisters Edna Harriman and Joyce Hvingelby. Marje
took all her schooling from Grade 1 to Grade 12, at
Carseland, where she was very involved in sports
and farm activities.
Alfred and Marje met in 1947,
when Alfred’s family moved to
Carseland. They started courting
two years later, while teaching
gymnastics together at Carseland
School, and working on their
respective family farms. Around
this time, Alfred attended SAIT
in Calgary, taking Agricultural
Mechanics. He and Marje were married in Calgary
on Jan. 31, 1953, and moved to the farm in Hussar, where they spent the next 25 years and raised
their six children Don, Jack, Bruce, Dale, Connie
and Guy, who have given them 14 grandchildren
and one great-granddaughter. All six of the children
played hockey, and Alfred started and coached the
girl’s team. Marje spent her springs and summers
coaching girls baseball.
Alfred had always been around horses and enjoyed rodeo activities with his family. During the
winter months, Alfred fed bulls from stock contractors, and it was only natural for his sons to start
riding them. He converted the quonset on the farm
to a bull riding arena, so that his boys and children
from the surrounding area could come and ride.
All the practice and support over the next six years
certainly paid off, as all five boys became professional bullriders. Between hockey, rodeo and other
sports Alfred and Marje spent many hours on the
road.
Their community activities included Alfred being
a Scout Leader and member of the Lions, and Marje

being a member of Unifarm as well as enjoying curling, while
they lived in Hussar. In 1978, they moved from Hussar to a
farm five miles north of Carseland, where they lived for the
next 30 years. From 1979 through 1991 he worked at Cominco
(now Agrium), and Marje worked part-time for chiropractors
and doctors in Strathmore. In 2008, they retired to Strathmore,
and have enjoyed spending 20 years as snowbirds, as well as
having the time to become more involved with their children,
grandchildren, and most recently their first great-granddaughter. They are surrounded by many, many friends.
The biggest changes they’ve seen in this area over the years
are the changes in farming technology, from horse and plow
to the huge GPS machines now being used.

Pass the Salt

THIS CHRISTMAS
‘Ring the bells, ring the bells
...’ The tune from the radio
draws me right in. It is only
when I mull over the words,
‘Ring the bells, peace on
earth, good will to men,’ that
I register the disconnect.
Looking at how people seem
to be ‘coping’ rather than
‘living,’ reading the paper
and watching the news, most
often leaves a sense of despair rather than cheer. In our
modern world, some may not
be old enough to remember a
reality that reflects the words
of that song; Nor even aspire
to such a ‘foreign’ concept.
The freedom that honesty
brings to our relationships
seems to be a well-kept secret. Few people enjoy a true
sense of community because
we need our defenses intact.
Whatever happened to recognizing I am human - I ‘flaw’? I
need grace as much as they
do (maybe the greatest obstacle is my need to be better
than that. Do I have that much
grace for myself?). If grace is
not an option, true connection
is not an option. If connection

is not an option, then what is?
Cynical is not typically where
I camp out. It represents that
hope is dead (at least in the
area where the cynicism is
applied). It shuts me down
and rightly so. Without hope,
what’s the use? Most of us
stand little chance of offering
our world political ‘enlightenment’ or to affect the global
economy significantly ...
we are, however, not without influence. Our circle of
influence may be small, but as
a community, our little circles
of influence bounce off and
affect one another, much like
the cells do in our blood.
With the Holy Spirit as our
Helper, our Comforter and our
Friend, this is a responsibility
we must not negate. May
we keep ‘dancing’ (a quote I
heard watching a Christmas
movie earlier this week). May
we become. May our older
self never prefer our younger
self. May we love and be
loved. May we be merry and
bright!

Victory in water contamination lawsuit
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

It has been a long-fought battle for Rosebud resident Jessica Ernst, and it’s one that’s not over yet. A former oil patch
consultant, Ernst has been tied up in a legal battle against
Encana, the Alberta Environment and the Energy Resources
Conservation Board (ERCB) now known as the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), all of which she is suing for different
reasons that all lead to the contamination of her groundwater
due to hydraulic fracturing.
The water in Ernst’s well, and others in the area, is so full
of methane and other unknown contaminants that haven’t
been disclosed that she can light her water on fire.
In May it was decided in the courts that Ernst did not have
a case against the ERCB because they owe only public duties under the Charter of Rights and Freedom. The ruling is
one she will be fighting to appeal in the Supreme Court of
Canada.
“If I do win at the Supreme Court then all that it will mean
is that I am allowed to sue the energy regulators, so it will
send me right back to where I started from seven years ago,”
said Ernst.
In court in April of this year, Alberta Environment’s lawyer
tried to use the same claim as the ERCB had, stating they
didn’t owe a private duty of care to individual landowners
when investigating groundwater contamination. Part of the
reasoning the case should be struck down, argued Crown
Counsel Neil Boyle, was that it would open the floodgates
and there could be millions or billions of dollars’ worth of
damages.
It was also decided during the April court appearance that
Encana should now proceed with the production of documents. Ernst had a deadline of Oct. 31, and Encana’s deadline
is this Friday, Dec. 19. She filed her 2,179 documents and is
now waiting to see what Encana will produce.
In November Ernst claimed a victory in the battle when it
was ruled that she could in fact sue Alberta Environment for
failing to investigate, and then remediate the water contamination near Rosebud.
While the Chief Justice Wittmann still said Ernst couldn’t
make a claim against the ERCB, he did state that she does
have an arguable claim against Alberta Environment and Encana for breaching private duties owed to her, and they may

be liable to her for damages.
Wittmann also ruled that the government pay
triple Ernst’s legal costs due to the improper manner that her claim was attacked.
Alberta Environment had until Dec. 8 to appeal
the decision that they can be taken to court, but
chose not to proceed.
“The Crown carefully and thoroughly reviewed
the decision of the court to allow this matter to
proceed and decided not to pursue an appeal. As
this matter is still before the courts (the lawsuit is
proceeding) we cannot comment further at this
time,” said Michelle Davio with the Alberta Justice
and Solicitor General Communications department, by e-mail.
Though the legal wheels are turning a little faster now, it could still be years before the case is
before the courts for a final decision.
“One of the problems with lawsuits is they
make them so horrible that people just as quickly as somebody offers money they settle out of
court and sign a gag order so you never find out
about them, and judges will allow these cases to
be sealed. They need to be made illegal, these gag
orders,” said Ernst

Wheatland County acquires new road
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

At the Wheatland County council meeting on
Dec. 2, council discussed the topic of developing a
road crossing private properties on Section 32-2521-4, East of Rural Road 215.
The issue that council was concerned about was
that an agreement with the owner, who was registered on title, was not completed. Files provided
evidence that there were no details why it was never executed, or whether the deal was done.
In February 2014, it was workers from the county
public works department that came forward and
expressed their concern about maintaining the private road.
Council did not really see a reason to plow the
road as there was a lack of documentation.
New information came forward to council’s attention during the meeting that there should be a
consideration for the county to re-visit taking ownership of the road and maintaining it.
Council removed the caveat, which allows them
to resume maintenance on Rural Road 215.
Once council decided on the plan, staff suggested that council should resume discussions with
residents to reach an agreement on the purchase
and exchange of areas that are similar to that of
Rural Road 215 with the roads under construction.
The whole issue is to see if it is the right thing to
revisit the road, and if the owners will agree to see
maintenance on this road.

“From council’s perspective, they just want to
make sure what they’re doing is the right thing. So
that’s got referred back, they didn’t make a decision
on that, so I won’t be able to report on anything
further than that until it comes back to council,
which will likely be in January,” said Alan Parkin,
Chief Administration Officer for Wheatland County.
The issue was brought up by Reeve Koester at
the meeting, after there was not a recent snow removal done.
“I think it was the snow removal that brought it
to their attention, after that one snowfall we had,
there was no snow clearing done,” said Parkin. “I
think certainly the residents along that road have
a concern with snow, but we haven’t maintained
that road for quite some time. It’s just when we got
the snow, it came to their attention and they said
‘hey we’re not maintaining it anymore’. We’ll work
through that at the next meeting.
“I think the residents had the concern with it
because of the long-standing agreement that had
been put in place, but unfortunately not a lot of it
was documented.”
The reasoning for the subject to be further reviewed is so the county does not take the risk of
the issue affecting other roads.
“This is why they set for us to come back with
some recommendations on how we can make this
thing work, without affecting other potential roads
that are out there,” said Parkin.
The concerns were raised after three months of
no maintenance on that road.

Harper Government accomplishments in 2014
KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

From my family to yours, I wish everyone all the
blessings of the Christmas holiday season. It was
great to see many constituents attend our Crowfoot constituency office Christmas open house. As
your Member of Parliament, I always look forward
to coming home from Ottawa to share some holiday cheer with constituents.
Our Conservative Government has provided
significant legislative accomplishments in 2014.
Job creation, lower taxes and free trade were key
elements in the economy-focused agenda in the
House of Commons this past year. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, we are
implementing important job-creating measures
from Economic Action Plan 2014 including the recently announced measures supporting families.
This year’s budget, Economic Action Plan 2014,
contained specific measures to create jobs, promote economic growth, and support Canadian
families. We have implemented a Small Business
Job Credit and doubled the Children’s Fitness Tax
Credit. We have also set the stage for tax cuts, including the Family Tax Cut Plan that will give every Canadian family with children under the age
of 18 more money to spend on their own priorities. It will allow a higher-income spouse to trans-

fer up to $50,000 of taxable income to a spouse in
a lower tax bracket. It also includes a significant
expansion of the Universal Child Care Benefit to
$160 per month for children under the age of 6.
There will be a new $60 monthly benefit for children aged 6 to 17 and a $1,000 increase to the
Child Care Expense Deduction limits.
All the while we have kept taxes low and continue to be on-track to return to a balanced budget in 2015. Lately, I have been hearing from you
about the impact of lower oil prices. We all enjoy
the lower prices at the gasoline pumps, but we
also know that we must be diligent when it comes
to managing Canada’s economy.
Contrary to Liberal leader Justin Trudeau’s claim
that budgets balance themselves – the federal
budget will continue to require a ‘steady hand at
the tiller’ to ensure it is balanced in 2015.
We have implemented job-creating measures
that build on our record of creating over a million
new jobs since the economic downturn. This year
has been the most successful year for trade in Canadian history – marked by the historic new trade
agreement with the European Union. Through
Canada’s Global Markets Action Plan, our government has also brought free trade agreements with
South Korea and Honduras into law.
I need not underline for constituents in our
riding the great importance to our local econo-

my when it comes to opening up new opportunities in the
global marketplace for our goods. For example, many of the
goods that Canada exports include the products created by
people who work in our local agriculture industry.
We are committed to continuing our support for Canadian
businesses and providing them with new tools and services
to help them reach their full export potential. In 2015, our
government will stay focused on the real priorities of Canadians: jobs, a balanced budget and long-term prosperity.

Community Spotlight: 4-H
SABRINA KOOISTRA
SAY Times Contributor

For over 100 years, 4-H has been connecting youth, aged six to 25, all across Canada. 4-H
stands for four principles: ‘head’, meaning managing and thinking, ‘heart’, meaning relating and caring, ‘hands’, for giving and working, and ‘health’,
standing for being and living.
4-H believes that kids should “learn to do by doing,” and as an organization, is trying to provide
students with skills that will bring them success
in future endeavours. Public speaking, community
service, leadership, and opportunity, are all embedded within the 4-H program (it also looks awesome on a résumé!).
There are several different projects that rural and
urban members can be a part of. Some of these
are within the agricultural sector, such as beef and
dairy cattle, sheep, horse, rabbit, and dog. There
are also life skills projects such as scrapbooking,
archery, cooking, sewing, and photography.
I have been a member of the Cheadle 4-H program for six years, and every year is packed with
new and cool opportunities to meet people, get
involved in community projects, go on unforgettable trips, learn new skills, and/or attend recreational events. I have improved my skills as a
public speaker through the mandatory speaking
component. I understand the agriculture indus-

try on a new level by getting into the operational
level of owning and caring for cattle. I have also
made lots of new friends from different clubs over
the years; 4-H is not only about self-development
and reaching out to the community.
There are numerous other activities that are
specifically designed and offered for enjoyment
and character building. In both the winter and
the summer, 4-H camps are available for all ages.
There are opportunities for international travel or
exchanges as well as scholarships for post-secondary education. Thanks to 4-H, thousands of kids
are now entering the professional world equipped
with skills that will help them succeed.
Here are the nine clubs that are in the Wheatland 4-H District:
Arrowwood: Horse
Cheadle Multi: Beef, Heifer, Sheep
Crowfoot Livestock: Beef
Crowfoot Multi: Archery, dog agility, outdoor adventure, sewing & crafts
Hussar: Beef, Horse, Multi
Rockyford: Beef
Strathmore Rusty Spurs: Horse
Standard Multi: Horse, Sheep
Strathmore Multi Club: Photography, Cooking,
Small Engine
If you are interested in checking out any of these
clubs, please contact Key Leader Michelle Lalonde
via e-mail ([email protected]).

The club members talked about volunteering for
Strathmore’s food bank. And just a reminder for
those signing up for Winter Bonanza, the deadline
is Dec. 19.
The Crowfoot club also talked about the regional awards banquet that took place in Acme
on Dec. 7.
Some members will be hanging out with the

seniors at Sagewood on Dec. 13. At the end of
the meeting, we had a hot dog supper and it was
delicious, with hot chocolate to warm everyone
up while hanging out in the cold. A big thanks
to Lara Russell for making the hot chocolate and
John Biskup for the great fire.
Things to look forward to, Calgary Flames vs.

Cassia Schramm of Rosebud performed a house concert for friends this
week, on Dec. 18, to celebrate the release of her second album, In Memory
of..., featuring three memorial songs,
Marj, Fern and Shadow.
Marj was a friend of Schramm’s grandmother and saw angels in her last days.
Fern was her mother’s friend who, Schramm says, was full of life and always
sang karaoke. Shadow was Schramm’s
beloved horse.
Schramm’s grandparents, pictured on
the cover, were her first experiences
of loss, and she says they’re present in
each song. In Memory of... is available
on www.bandcamp.com and iTunes.
Schramm herself is available for spring
performances and can be reached at

Trinity

CMJHS
Trinity Christian Academy was in the Christmas spirit raising
items for the Christmas Hamper Society.

Each year students at Crowther Memorial Junior High are asked to take part in the Cart Wars. The idea is to bring in different non-perishable food items on the Christmas Hamper Society’s wish list to help their pod win points. The one with
the most points wins a free afternoon of watching a movie and enjoying snacks with their classmates.

Wheatland elementary school students brought in more
than 2,300 items to give to the Christmas Hamper Society,
filling four trucks. Students helped hamper representatives
fill the trucks.

The Grade 6D class at Sacred Heart Academy spent 10 days
collecting items for the Christmas Hamper Society. As of Dec. 10
approximately 1,000 items had been collected.

Austin Seely (l-r), Crush Cann, Rylan Jolly and
James Rachynski showed off some of the items
that Brentwood School’s students collected to
do their part to help out the Christmas Hamper
Society.

Bison players brighten holiday season
Justin Seward ~Times Reporter
The UFA Bison players took time out
of their busy schedules to go shopping
with young kids and help them wrap the
items at Strathmore’s Calgary Co-op on
Dec. 14.
The team helped children of singleparent homes select gifts for their loved
ones and assisted in wrapping the presents during the annual Christmas Shopping with the Bisons event.
“The history behind this is that it came
12 years ago, where one of the managers decided that wouldn’t it be nice to do
some shopping in the community and
take some kids out from less fortunate
homes. They went out and solicited 20
businesses that at $50 a piece to come
up with a $1,000 budget and the Co-op
said we want it all,” said Bisons General
Manager Wayne Hansen. “They continue to be a fantastic partner and we
couldn’t be happier.”
Hansen added that it is a good step
for a lot of the players to develop their
community skills as they move up in their
hockey careers.
“One of the reason that we do it is
we’re preparing the players to go on and
play junior hockey, so when they leave
here one of the biggest things they do
is their involvement in the community.
We’re developing not only hockey players but we’re developing young men,”
said Hansen.
He added that an early morning event
such as this is very uncommon for the
team after a game, but it’s a way of giving back and putting a smile on the kids’
faces.
“You know they got here and they
were kind of sleepy and all of a sudden
the little kids get here and it brings smiles
to their faces and it’s a fantastic day,”
said Hansen.
Bisons forward Sebastien Kilcommons
thought it was a great way to brighten
the spirits during the holidays.
“It was really fun because we haven’t
had much of a chance so far this year to
really give back, besides minor hockey,
especially around Christmas when some
of the less fortunate families are having
a harder time,” said Kilcommons. “It’s
nice to be able to brighten their day and
make sure they have nice Christmas.”
Once the shopping was done, he enjoyed the wrapping part, even though he
could learn a thing or two on how to gift
wrap.
“I’m pretty terrible at wrapping, so it
was all Jasmine (his shopping partner)
that had to do everything. So I was just
handing her the tape the whole time,”
said Kilcommons. “Even though it’s so
early, I like being able to give back and
help out these kids.”

Santa visits Langdon
Players from the UFA Bisons gave back to the
community as they their annual ‘Christmas
Shopping with the Bisons’ on Dec. 14 at the
Co-op. Both the players and kids were having
a fantastic time wrapping the presents while
getting to know one another.

Saturday night hockey did
not go well for the Wheatland Kings as they lost
to the Cochrane Generals 5-2 on Dec 13 at the
Strathmore Family Centre.

The Wheatland Kings are searching for answers, after losing 4-3 on
the road to Airdrie on Friday night
and 5-2 to the Cochrane Generals
on Saturday night at home. The inconsistency is causing a lot of frustration around the team lately and
they can not seem to find their way
out of it.
“I think last night (versus Airdrie), we got back into that mentality where we’re only playing 25
to 30 minutes of hockey and not
playing a full 60. Our third period
was probably one of the best periods I’ve seen us play as a hockey
team, but once again it comes back
to you can’t just play one period
of hockey and expect results,” said
assistant coach Joel Robinson. “We
played 5-on-5 hockey consistently,
it was good hockey, we supported
each other and the shots were 15-5
in the third period.”
Robinson thought the outcome
in both games were unfortunate
because he felt that they had the
jump on Airdrie, but did not get the
results.
“It wasn’t the results we needed
this weekend, especially against a
team like Airdrie where we come

out the better skating team. Something’s not clicking right now,
whether it’d be team chemistry or
team morale,” said Robinson.
Curtis Osborne scored twice and
Sebastien Turgeon scored once in
the loss to Airdrie.
On
Saturday
night
versus
Cochrane, the Kings tried to keep
their composure but it was difficult
when it seemed as if the calls were
one-sided.
“It’s hard to keep your composure
when … it was 6-1 in their favour,”
said Robinson. “There is a certain
time when you have to draw the
line and stand up for your players.”
Osborne and Chris Williams
scored in the loss to the Generals.
Robinson added that it is not
helping right now having key players out who normally contribute in
different areas on any given night.
“It does hurt when you have guys
like Cody Willis hurt, Blake Bishop and Matt Thomson in the stands
– all guys that are regular lineup
guys and it does really affect the
roster when they’re not in the lineup,” said Robinson.
The Kings will play their final
game of 2014 when they host the
Okotoks Bisons (8:15 p.m.) on
Dec. 20 at the Strathmore Family
Centre.

A blown 3-0 lead, which ultimately led
to a 4-3 loss to the Lloydminster Bobcats
on Dec. 13, did not faze the UFA Bisons.
The local triple-A midget team came
back re-energized and determined as
they beat the Grande Prairie Storm 7-1
the following day at the Strathmore Family Centre.
“(Saturday) we got off to that great start
and you know some breaks went against
us and I think it’s how we handled it. We
saw a little adversity, we didn’t handle
it quite as good, it’s about being invested for 60 minutes not 20,” said assistant
coach Sandy Henry. “I thought (Sunday)
we kept chipping away and then they
make it 2-1, that’s a point on Saturday
that we had a little trouble with. But today the guys bared down and we got the
next one.”
Henry thought the team really moved
the puck in a quick, efficient manner
and gained results.
“I think we were really team-oriented
(on Sunday), we moved the puck when
we had to, we simplified our plays when
we got out ahead and our defense was
good about getting it out of the zone and
lastly we got some big stops when we
needed one,” said Henry.
The difference in the win was that the
players were not as fragile as they were
in the loss.
“I think everyone could feel it on the
bench that it totally sucked the enthusi-

asm out of us and we got to find a way
by that. It was 3-3, it wasn’t like we were
down three. We played a little looser (on
Sunday) and weren’t so fragile as we
were on Saturday,” said Henry.
The offence clicked for the second
weekend in a row and really showed
the teams dominance when they start to
skate.
“When we’re making those quick passing decisions and getting the puck moving – we start to get the other team’s defense turning their feet and now we’re
hitting them with speed and the puck’s
moving. I think our guys were being a
lot more responsible in the offensive
zone about finding that open lane to
shift into,” said Henry.
He believed that they had a chance to
win against Lloydminster and it was one
of those games when that extra shot did
not go in.
“We thought we had a chance to win
that game with the adversity but we felt
we generated more scoring chances than
them. (On Saunday) they go in but that’s
because we stayed a little more determined,” said Henry.
Sheen, Conley, Cameron Shorrock,
Gary Haden, Jordan McConnell, Trygve
Many Guns and Kyle Gordon scored in
the win.
Next up for the Bisons will be pair
of homes games on Dec. 20 versus the
Lethbridge Hurricanes (5:15 p.m.) and
on Dec. 21 versus the MLAC Beverly Optimists (2 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family

the games where we were a little more

smoother because we were playing some
good defense.”
Galandy accredits some solid play
prior to the tournament, which created
momentum going in.
“We actually had a league game last
Monday. We played Foothills Composite
and we beat them 70-60 but that’s the
first time we beat them in the last two
years, so we had some momentum going
into the tournament,” said Galandy.
The championship game saw the deficit 15 points for the Spartans and their
work ethic helped them immensely in
the comeback.
“We were down 15 points in the first
quarter and then we picked it up on defense (and) stopped them from scoring,
I think we went on a 15-6 run and up
by one point at half 22-21 and we just
kept our momentum and kept at it,” said
Galandy.
“Crescent Heights unfortunately had
one of their top players injured, so that
could have contributed to us beating
them.”

It was evident that with the slow starts
came inconsistent play and forced the

The eighth annual Wheatland Elementary Grade
6 volleyball tournament on Dec. 8 was an afternoon
full of excitement for young players.
The tournament consisted of 100 students, five
coaches and a total of 10 teams from Carseland,
Brentwood, Westmount, and Trinity Christian Academy.
“One of our goals here at our school is to focus
on healthy, active living and we have daily physical education at our school. So we try to get kids
involved beyond the school day in extracurricular
sports and foreshadowing when they move on the
junior high,” said Michelle Rushford, tournament
organizer. “At this level, we don’t cut anyone and
it’s equal opportunity for everyone. All the chil-

dren that represented today, if they came out for
the practices then they made the team. It’s just an
opportunity to experience team work and collaboration, and volleyball is such a great sport for that.”
According to Rushford, they hope to expand the
tournament in the future.
“This is the first year we’re up to five schools that
are invited, the most that have ever come before so
we’re expanding,” said Rushford. “I was talking to
the principal at Brentwood, who is also the principal at Central Bow Valley and she said we should
get some of the outlying areas involved as well.
We have a beautiful facility here, we’d definitely be
opened to that.”
The event provides the opportunity for kids that
would not normally be in athletics to see what
teamwork is all about. It also teaches sportsmanship by supporting other teams.

NOTICE TO CREDITORS
AND CLAIMANTS

TAYLOR, Kenneth W.

September 28, 1931 – December 13, 2014

Ken was born in Strathmore, Alberta and passed away there
83 years later. 57 years ago, he married Beth Fielder, and
with her had four children; Joan (Shelly Osten), Tom (Jane), Clark (Cheryl) and
Al (Tammy), 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grand children, 16 chickens and a tambourine.
With his dad, Harold, brother, Ross, and later his son, Clark, he farmed the family
land at Langdon Corner for seven of those decades. Meanwhile, he had time to
be one of the founding members of the Alberta Pioneer Auto Club and Pioneer
Acres of Alberta. He was, at various times, the president of the Horseless Carriage Club, the Calgary Historical Society and the Alberta Archaeological Society.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Foothills Model T Club, the Military Collector’s Club and was a regular columnist for the World Airline Historical
Society. He still had time to teach the Dale Carnegie public speaking courses,
volunteer with the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede and with the Calgary Airport
White Hatters. He also enjoyed travelling with Beth throughout North America,
Russia, Europe, Britain, Australia, South America and Hawaii.
Ken and Beth were long time members of Langdon Baptist Church. Ken was
an elder at Chestermere Christian Fellowship, and more recently, regularly attended Strathmore Alliance Church.
He was, first and foremost, a loving husband and family man, but also a farmer
and a friend to many.
Ken is survived by all of his family and a brother, Ross. He was predeceased by
his parents, Harold and Eva, and by his brother, Clarence.
Funeral services was held on December 18, 2014 at 2:00 pm, at Strathmore
Alliance Church, 325 – 1st Avenue, Strathmore, Alberta.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Strathmore Hospital for the exceptional care and love they provided to Ken over the past three weeks, so, in
lieu of flowers, donations to the Strathmore District Health Foundation would be
greatly appreciated.

OSTROM, Frances
(Frankie)

(1922-2014)

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mum Frankie Ostrom
at the Strathmore Hospital on December 12,
2014 at the age of 92. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her son Rocky (Beryl)
- grandkids Samantha and Randall (Maia); son
Ronnie (Carla) – grandkids Joel, Jamie (Ellis) and
Jordan; daughter Laurie (Max) – grandkids Brad
(Krista), Jeff (Sheena) and great grandchild Hannah; daughter Marni (Guy) – grandkids Ty, Kylie,
and Brooke; her sister Mary Niwa, brother John
Lijdsman and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by our dad Paul Ostrom,
her sister Helen Carroll, and brother Gerry Lijdsman. Mum wore many hats throughout her life.
She was a teacher, a farm-wife, and an active
member of the Carseland Community including
being a life-time member of the Carseland Public
Benefit club. After moving from Carseland to a
condo in Strathmore, she later enjoyed her last
years at the Wheatland Lodge. As a member of
the Catholic community, her faith was very important to her throughout her whole life. Sports were
a passion for her. She played softball, curled, and
golfed and later was the number one fan of her
kids and her grandkids. Mum loved watching all
sports on TV especially the Flames and Stampeders, and most recently became an avid NASCAR
fan. A caring and intelligent woman, she was our
role model and our rock. Her strong and loving
spirit will live on in all of us. A memorial service
was held on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at
Hope Community Covenant Church, Strathmore
at 1:00 p.m. The family would like to express our
sincere appreciation to friends and family for their
thoughts, prayers, flowers, cards, and visits. We
would especially like to thank all of the caregivers who helped mum through her last days. If
friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made
directly to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation (2888 Shaganappi Trail Northwest, Calgary,
AB T3B 6A8 or directly online). To send condolences, please visit Frankie’s obituary at www.

Jeanne Vecchio passed away
peacefully in the Bassano Hospital on December 5, 2014 at the age of 86 years.
Jeanne was born in St. Fabien-de-Panet, Quebec
to Alfred Brunelle and Jeanette Ritcher on March
7, 1928. She was predeceased by her husband,
Joe Vecchio, as well as all of her brothers and
sisters. Jeanne lived in Strathmore and worked
for many years at the Wheatland County Inn before retiring. She lived at Sunset Haven in Strathmore before moving to Playfair Lodge in Bassano
where she resided until her passing. She loved
the Lodge in Bassano, the care she received and
the friends she made. At Jeanne’s request, there
will be no funeral service. Jeanne will return to
Ontario to be buried in the family plot. To send
condolences, please visit Jeanne’s obituary at

MEMORIAMS
In Memory of

Ken Jones

Why are you crying?
Do you think that I’m
gone?
I haven’t left you. I’m where
I belong.
Anytime you are lonely, anytime you
are sad, anytime that your heart breaks, anytime
you are mad - all you have to do is close your
eyes and I’ll ne there with you.
You see the world may take my body but that’s
all that it can do.
Don’t stop the memory of the time we shared.
It’s God’s way to help you through.
Take time to laugh when life gets hard, the way
we used to do!
A smell? A touch? The morning sun? They all
will help you see.
I’m still there. I never left.
Now smile once more for me.
Live each day. Keep looking up.
My life was not in vain.
I finished the task I was born to do.
That’s why I couldn’t remain.

With Love

Craig, Luisa
and Marissa
