ON THE ROAD IN BURANGI KENYA
I always look forward to my trips to Kenya. It gives me renewed energy and each time I learn more about the community, myself, and God. I recently returned from Burangi and during the community meeting the village elder, Johnson Nyale, passionately described horrific stories about the attempts of his friends and family members trying to cross the raging Sabaki River.

GARDEN CITY COMMUNITY CLINIC ENCOUNTERS
A review of the past 18 months shows just how dramatic a jump in the number of patient encounters this past year thanks to enhanced funding.
And you thought Eagle Road was bad. Hippos, crocodiles, and a strong current make the Sabaki River a dangerous “intersection” to cross.
This river has claimed the lives of many over the years: their children, grandparents, aunts and uncles. They use this river, like we use our cars and it has been the only way to get to the places they need to go for everyday life. The strong current of the river often overturns the canoes and their bodies are washed downriver to the ocean just a few miles away, never to be seen again. That is why when we partnered with them and helped them see how they could stop this, they were willing to cleared the nine miles of bush to make a road. They have been empowered. IMAGINE HURRICANE SANDY EVERY YEAR To add insult to injury, though, the climate is changing. In the past they lived and planned around the pattern of short and long rains, but now the unpredictability of the rains is creating even more havoc. The week before I arrived in Kenya, it rained so much that the road was flooded in two areas, making it im-

DRAMATIC CHANGES FOR PATIENTS
Hope Flows Through Team
When we met David, he was unemployed, had suffered a long and rough divorce, was adjusting to being a single father of three, and had relocated to a new town. He was so depressed, David was moving slowly, talking slowly, and having thoughts of violent suicide, multiple times a day. He had never experienced anything like this and was ashamed to admit his circumstances. During his first visit to the Garden City Community Clinic, we developed a treatment plan implemented by multiple team members which would empower David to make changes. Our social worker showed him how to get school supplies for his kids right alongside his counseling therapy and medical treatment for depression . David was able to discuss deeper spiritual issues and questions with a staff member which helped him prayerfully make a few key decisions. In two months, his mental health has significantly improved, he was offered a job, a house free of rent, and was granted custody of his children. It took a team of individuals caring for each part of David’s body, mind, spirit and family to give him the tools to thrive again.
“I Got My Voice Back!”
When Kemal Bultum walked into the medical clinic, he was fearful he’d lose his voice entirely and forever, and thus his ability to work and support his family. He wasn’t sure if he would be able to speak enough to converse with the doctor, or be able to have the care he needed. After seeing a doctor at the Friendship Clinic, he was relieved that with a referral through the Volunteer Physicians Network (VPN), he might be able to get his voice back. And get his voice back he did! After being seen by Dr Eric Garner at Southwest Idaho Ear, Nose & Throat, Kemal underwent surgery in October to remove a lesion on his vocal cord (found to be benign). Once again Kemal speaks with a clear and strong voice! VPN provides a warm handoff between primary care clinics and specialist practices (and then back again) for hundreds of our uninsured, low-income neighbors. We coordinate the generosity of partnerships with physicians, hospital services, anesthesia, imaging and other providers to remove barriers to specialty care. Our advocacy and facilitation provides a voice for many people besides just Kemal.
“I Can Do This!”
Jim has been an “uncontrolled” Type 2 diabetic for many years. Based on his chart, the medical world would label him as “non-compliant.” In the past, other medical providers had been ineffective with helping Jim keep his blood sugars in check. Q: How do we make him healthier? A: We can’t – this is his responsibility. In the past, whenever he was admonished to “stop eating fast food,” he simply stopped listening and didn’t modify his eating behaviors. So instead of prescribing change, we taught him how to count carbohydrates. This helps him determine the right amount of insulin to take after each meal. Our volunteer nursing team met with him to teach him these new skills and how to measure out his insulin for each meal. It worked! Jim was so excited that he understood how to count carbs he blurted out, “I can do this!” Sometimes with all of our medical knowledge, we forget that the simplest method might be to just meet the patient where they are and giving them simple tools that they can use to improve their health.

DOMESTIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
Canyon County Mustard Tree Community Clinic, Wellness Clinic Caldwell, Idaho Twin Falls, Idaho This clinic was kick-started in 2009 by a Bible study group that dreamed of something bigger than they could pull off on their own. At pivotal stages along the way, Genesis has provided encouragement and technical assistance, and recommended one of its own anchor volunteers, Dr. John Pierce, to become their medical director. This past year has brought some much needed financial stability with several large grants coming in. Several new community members have been added to the board of directors. The clinic has been able to add a full-time administrative director and is poised to open up two evenings a week for primary care, medication assistance, and counseling. We just met the directors of this clinic a year ago, but have since formed some strong relationships to encourage and equip them for greater success. It started in 2006 when a Twin Falls doctor started taking blood pressures in the back of a church-based thrift store. Since then, it has relocated four times, is open four days a week, and has 27 volunteer providers for medical, mental health, dental, and optometry services. This year, the clinic has hopefully made a transition to a permanent home in the former St. Luke’s emergency room space in the countyowned hospital building. The new site offers a fresh, clean, professional medical office for those who qualify and are in need and for all the volunteers that donate their time to make sure each patient gets the best care possible.

Our plans for adding two more counseling rooms, a dental operatory and a reception booth are now in the permitting phase and we hope to be finished with construction by the end of February. We will then be making full use of every inhabitable square foot in the building!

Even then, these people who struggle every day to eke out a living still have hope and determination—which so encourages me! The community has done all they can to make this road safe. We always knew that this road was a huge challenge for Burangi and we will not give up on them or let this prevent them from having access to health care. The empowerment model that we are using works! This community has taken ownership of their problems. Now we are coming alongside of them to get culverts placed in the two sections of the road that floods. When finished, Burangi will continue to build its clinic, be able to get to the market consistently, take their children to school, vote, go to church, see friends: all of the everyday things that families everywhere need and want to do.
ROTARY MATCHING GRANT WILL HELP “PAVE THE WAY”
Rotary International is one of our partners and we are in the process of applying for an international Rotary Matching Grant that will cover the cost of these culverts. The price tag of around $65,000 is a fraction of the benefit that will come to the 5,000 people in Burangi village, not to mention the other 43,000 in the surrounding catchment area who will ultimately have access to quality health care. It will end years of physical, social and economic isolation. We invite you to join us in efforts to spare precious lives in Burangi. I do believe that they are some of the most gracious and hard working people God has ever created. A gift towards this project this season may not be in a pretty box with a red bow, but it will be a gift that will make a huge difference! - Tracy Ritter, International Director

Since this fall, however, with help from the Laura Moore Cunningham Foundation, we have already created more storage space in our warehouse with new shelving racks and resurfaced the parking lot, long overdue for some maintenance. Also, thanks to the Harry W Morrison Foundation, a growing sinkhole behind our building was successfully remediated.
