TUSCANY WARD *RELIEF SOCIETY* NEWSLETTER December 2012 Visiting Teaching Message “Visiting teaching gives women the opportunity to watch over, strengthen, and teach one another –it is truly a work of salvation. Through visiting teaching, sisters minister in behalf of the Savior and help prepare women for the blessings of eternal life,” said President Spencer W. Kimball. He continues, “We are to warn, expound, exhort and teach and invite others to come unto Christ and your testimony is a terrific medium.” When we as visiting teachers increase our knowledge of gospel truths, our testimonies strengthen, and we can then support sisters who are preparing to be baptized and confirmed, help new members become anchored in the gospel, help “win back those who have gone astray and warm up the hearts of those who have grown cold in the gospel”, and we can encourage sisters to come unto Christ through temple attendance. President Kimball said, “Who can tell but that many of the fine active people in the Church today are active because you were in their homes and gave them a new outlook, a new vision. You see, you are not only saving these sisters, but perhaps also their husbands and their homes.” When the Prophet Joseph Smith organized the Relief Society, he said that the sisters were not only to look after the poor but were also to save souls. He taught that the women in the Church play an essential role in Heavenly Father’s plan of salvation. Ask yourself: How does Relief Society prepare me for the blessings of eternal life? What can I do to increase the faith of those I watch over?

*Message from the Presidency* "As we seek Christ, as we find Him, as we follow Him we shall have the Christmas Spirit, not for one fleeting day each year, but as a companion always." ~THOMAS S. MONSON December is upon us, a season of gratitude and giving. As women, there are so many meaningful details to be taken care of: Careful planning, decorating, baking and gift giving to be done. I often wonder, when my children are grown and far from home, what Christmas memories they will hold sacred in their hearts. As I look at the holiday preparations and the experiences I try to create in our home, I ask myself if they are strengthening my children's belief in Jesus Christ. Of the many traditions that fill our holiday season, what is leading your family closer to Christ? My favorite holiday decoration is a wooden nativity set. It was a gift given to me by my sister. It's a special nativity that I actually like to display year round. As the Christmas season begins, we empty out the figurines leaving behind an empty wooden stable. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, we set aside specific evenings to come together as a family and study one member of the nativity. We take the time to learn about the role that person played in the miracles that surround Christ's birth. Each of the figurines has a story to tell and a lesson to learn from. It gives our family a deeper understanding and appreciation of Christ's birth. At the end of each evening, we add the figurine studied to our nativity scene. Week by week, we fill the stable. My kids greatly anticipate the evening when we can carefully place the last figure in the center of the crèche, the Christ child. I hope in years to come, this will be my children's fondest memory. I hope they remember that their hearts were turned to Christ and filled with the Christmas spirit that only He can bring. What is the focus of your Christmas celebration.? Has the Savior become the center of your Christmas traditions? As Christ becomes our focus, we will recognize that He is the giver of every good gift. Let the great joy and good tidings of the season fill your heart and home. With Love, Sister Lowry
