www.santaclaraelementarypta.blogspot.com Book Fair
We want to thank all those who shopped at the Book Fair and were patient in the longer lines at Dads & Donuts. The Book Fair takes a lot of man hours and we appreciate the Book Fair Committee for all their work and efforts: Kristina Puriri, Shari Wood, Jaime Christensen, Fergie Johnson, and Meredith Weakley. THANK YOU!

It's that time of year again! Please share your imagination and enter the PTA Reflections contest!

What do you believe in? What are your dreams? Who inspires you?
Choreograph a dance, produce a film, write a poem or story, compose a song, take a picture or create a piece of visual art and tell us your interpretation of the theme:

“Believe, Dream, Inspire.”
You can pick up registration forms at the office OR print forms and review rules for each category at http://www.utahpta.org/rules-entry-forms Note: If you print your own forms, it is fine to leave the bottom (the part asking for all of the specific PTA information) blank. We can fill that in as needed. All entrants will be invited to attend an ice cream party/awards ceremony and have their work featured at the annual Evening of the Arts night at the school.

For those who would like an additional tax deduction before the end of the year, please consider a donation for our Shade Structure Fund. Simply email us at [email protected] and we can arrange to provide a receipt with our tax-ID number and we will designate that money specifically to the shade structure fund.

Legislative Issues
Unfortunately we learned that  Education has been moved    significantly down the legislative   priorities list in the coming 2014  Legislative Session.  We encourage  parents to stay informed about issues  and contact their Representatives.  To  easily contact them go to this website:  www.le.utah.gov/GIS/findDistrict.jsp    You’ll enter your address and it  will show you your Representatives.  If  you click on their names you’ll have  access to their email and phone  numbers.    If you have issues you disagree  with PTA’s position on, feel free to  contact the Utah PTA State Legislative  VP Ronda Rose at [email protected].   Be sure to mention you are a PTA  member.  .

Bond Vote in November
Thank you to the many  who allowed us to post yard  signs in your yard for the  Bond.  The District  Superintendent specifically  wanted to thank PTA for their  support—it was a close vote  but the Bond did pass.  We  appreciate the fiscal

responsibility of the  District which saves  hundreds of thousands of  dollars in interest money  because they consistently  repay these bonds early— freeing up additional funds  which do not come from  tax payers.

St. George City Wants Your Input on a New Park
December 11th at 5:30‐6:30 in the Entrada Room at the Dixie Center, St.  George City is hosting a meeting to get input on an all‐abilities park.  This  type of park is designed for children with physical limitations.  St. George  wanted the word spread through PTA groups in the area.  Refreshments  will be served.    For more information contact St. George Leisure  Services at [email protected] or 435‐627‐4500.

Protect Our Kids in the Winter Sun
While most of us wouldn’t think twice about packing a sunscreen for our family’s beach holiday, we often forget that UV rays are also prevalent during the winter. In fact, UV rays during the winter may cause more damage than those we encounter on the beach. Our winter holidays often involve snow and you may be surprised to learn that for every 1,000 feet of elevation, UV exposure increases 8 to 10 percent. So if you have an ‘average’ complexion and are skiing or boarding at 11,000 feet above sea level in Colorado at around noon, you’ll burn after just six minutes of unprotected sun exposure. This is compared to burning after 14 minutes in Florida! Snow also reflects nearly 80 percent of the sun’s UV rays, so you’ll be hit by the same rays more than once. Protect your family’s skin during the winter by first practicing winter safe sun strategies:    Limit the time you spend in full sunlight, especially between 10 am and 4 pm. Take breaks if you can to rest your skin. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants made of dark or brightly colored, tightly woven fabrics; these offer greater protection. Protect eyes and eyelids from UV exposure to decrease the risk of eye disorders. From www.thesuncreenshop.com

Pizza During the Holiday Madness

PTA still has a few pizza cards from Hungry Howies remaining. The cards cost $10 and immediately pay for themselves. It includes 8 coupons including one coupon for a free 2 topping medium pizza (no purchase necessary!) and one coupon for a free order of Howie Bread. These cards do not expire. Also an easy stocking stuffer or gift for a college student! Simply write a check to Santa Clara PTA for $10 and stop by the school office to pick one up.
