The Deductive Approach –
Rule Driven Learning
• A deductive approach starts with the
presentation of a rule and is followed by
examples in which the rule is applied.
• The grammar rule is presented and the
learner engages with it through the study
and manipulation of examples.
What is a rule?
• In the Longman Activity Dictionary “rule” is
defined as:

A principle or order which guides behaviour,
says how things are to be done etc.
Features of a good rule

• Illustrated by an example
• Short
• Check students’ understanding
• Students personalise the rule
The Deductive Approach
• This method can be viable options in certain
situations;
1) When dealing with highly motivated
students,
2) Teaching a particularly difficult concept, or
3) For preparing students to write exams.

The teacher will introduce the concept,
Explains the rules related to its use, and
Finally the students will practice using the
concept in a variety of different ways.
