SPONSORSHIP PROPOSAL 2007-08

Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

www.iitd.ac.in/fsae

Prologue
The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi is proud to announce the 2008 Formula SAE project. The IIT Delhi Formula SAE team is a group of budding engineers committed to experiencing high end automotive racing. A team of enthusiastic students is working on putting together a Formula car as per Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) specifications for global competition.

The SAE IIT Delhi chapter had earlier participated in Formula SAE West, at California Speedway, Fontana, California, USA in 2007, organized by The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The project originates out of the fundamental technology taught in the curriculum and other specialized know-how within the IIT. We are excited to take this opportunity to invite you, as a part of our local business community, to become a shareholder in this project.

We would like your participation in the form of sponsorship to support the design and production of the cars through gift of personnel time, gift of components and monitory support.

Participation benefits are listed in this brochure, and I request you to support this student driven effort generously.

Looking forward to your support and participation, Regards,

Dr Sudipto Mukherjee Professor & FSAE Faculty Advisor

Dr Arun Kanda Professor & Head

The Executive Summary
Formula racing is one of the most technically advanced sports in the world, requiring the best of engineers and researchers to build the fastest cars using the best of technology. The kind of science involved in this sport requires a strong understanding of concepts of car design and technology. These form the basis of not only formula car design but also fuel efficiency, product design and eventually every branch of mechanical engineering. We aspire to learn and master these concepts by applying our class room theories in real time by putting in a sincere effort to make the best formula car in the world.

Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE) holds a student formula car competition named Formula-SAE, in which students are given some restrictions on car engine and frame to challenge the creativity and imagination of students. These student designed cars compete with each other in the areas of fuel economy, endurance, acceleration and cost analysis. After successfully competing in the FSAE WEST competition at California last year, we feel confident to do so again this year.

The following document is an overview of the team’s campaign to compete in the 2008 Formula SAE competition. It is designed to provide you with a concise summary of the team’s project plan and strategy to achieve its objectives - a racing vehicle set for a podium finish at the 2008 Formula SAE competition.

The Competition
Formula-SAE is a prestigious event being held in five continents with seven venue countries in which more than 300 universities from around the world take part. The Formula SAE competition is for a team of students to conceive, design, fabricate, and compete with small formula-style racing cars. The cars are built with a team effort over a period of about one year and are taken to a host institution for judging and comparison with other competitors. The various FORMULA SAE event venues and their tentative dates are as follows:

The Team
AXLR8R is a diverse team of talented engineering students determined to get the most of their educational experience. Through passion and commitment, students collaborate as a team to design and build a formula style open-wheeled race car that competes in the annual Formula SAE competition. Each member contributes his or her skills in a specialized area of interest, such as engine, chassis, suspension, electronics, controls or body. A dynamic team leader works to synchronize all of these efforts and create a unique vehicle that will proudly represent its school in a field of over 140 universities from around the world.

In 2007, AXLR8R competed for the first time in FSAE West and secured 58th rank out of 80 international teams. AXLR8R is poised to carry on the tradition in 2008 as it continues to transform students into not only efficient innovative engineers, but all round team players as well.

The Aspiration
AXLR8R Formula Racing, just like any other racing team has the ultimate goal of winning. With this main objective in mind, our

team narrows its focus to a group of supporting goals which serve as guidelines for the team’s structure and development. Our primary objectives are as follows: • Student Development – FSAE competition enables students to gain hands-on experience. The real world management,

leadership, and design skills learned through these competitions cannot be equaled in the classroom. • Interdisciplinary Teamwork – AXLR8R Formula Racing brings together students from across campus. Our team recognizes the benefits of working as a cross-functional team and invites all students at IITD to join IITD Formula Racing. Rounding out our team are engineering, basic science and business management majors. • Visibility/Partnerships – As well as providing a two-way relationship between students and alumni/industry professionals we extend our network to promote sponsor visibility. Without

support from businesses, civic organizations and individuals, our team would not be able to compete annually in FSAE. Therefore we feel it is our responsibility to make IITD Formula Racing valuable to sponsors by maintaining strong relationships with them and integrating sponsor visibility into our team’s

foundation.

Unique Attributes of the Car Attributes
ENGINE A 600cc sports bike engine with multi point fuel

injection (MPFI) is being used. Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to control ignition timing, valve timing and fuel injection with the use of different sensors has been employed. Telemetric System for real time engine monitoring is also being used, to optimise fuel efficiency and performance.

CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION The chassis has been designed as per the 95th percentile American male and 5th percentile American female (as per the rules), with the aim of low C.G. and weight reduction. The car is equipped with Double Wishbone Type (A arm) Suspension system. BODYWORK

The bodywork has been designed on the principle of Aerodynamics so as to minimize the the air drag and which

maximize

downforce

results in high speed and better traction, hence, fantastic handling. BRAKING SYSTEM Disc brakes with hydraulic transmission have been used, acting on all four wheels with a single control self-adjusting ability. Also, adjustable pedals accommodate different drivers.

The Achievements
This endeavour by IITD students in Formula Racing is first of its kind in the history of the institute. We have successfully participated in SAE Mini BAJA competition in South Africa in 2005. We were the first Indian team to participate in FSAE West 2007,Califonia Speedway, Fontana, California, USA and secured 58th rank

among 80 teams including those from USA, UK, Canada, China and Japan.

During the fabrication phase, we won accolades and heaps of praise from the media for our efforts. The project was acknowledged and well received in I2TECH and Technical Open House. Our project was covered by Times of India, The Hindu, Indian Express, Hindustan Times, and was aired on Doordarshan, and Sahara News. We secured 24th rank in sales presentation, a static event at FSAE West 2007. We qualified all the major tests like Technical Inspection, Tilt Table and Noise Test. Our effort gained special praise from the judges, members of teams from other universities, and the American Media.

This year we are expecting to improve our performance in all the events and give our all to achieve a podium finish.

Market potential for Formula Racing in India
Formula 1 is on its way to India. The Indian Olympic Association has received a letter from Bernie Ecclestone, CEO of F1, offering Delhi a place in the 2009 Formula 1 world championship.

Formula 1 has been acquiring an increasing following since Narain Karthikeyan made his debut in 2005. Recently Mr. Vijay Mallya has acquired controlling stakes in Spyker F1, giving rise to the exciting possibility of an Indian F1 Team. The fan following has evidently risen very steeply over the past 1 year, and this craze for F1 racing will only increase further. In a market the size of ours, one can only imagine the possibilities.

Associating with us NOW will give your company a head-start. When Formula 1 finally does come to India, your company will have the benefit of already having encouraged this motorsport at student level, which increases your goodwill and brand value. Companies associated with F1 generate profits to the tune of over 400%.

Since the Grand Prix will be held in New Delhi, it is only natural that your company should support IIT Delhi since the car will easily be available for display at all Formula 1 promotional events and races in New Delhi. 2.5 billion people watch each race and research shows that 64 per cent of Formula 1 home viewers are in Asia.
