Description of Files:
before-and-after - An otherwise nice picture of me and my girlfriend was obscured by a rather harsh shadow of my hand holding the camera. This demonstrates my abilities with the clone stamp and dodge/burn tools in Photoshop CS3. copy of taylorbizcard – This is my freelancing business card. I used the mosaic filter to create a pixelated image of the eye in Photoshop and then created a clipping mask out of a circular grid in Illustrator to execute the main image. The tape is a combination of gradient, low opacity, and the divide tool. The paper clip is a compound path applied with a gradient fill. The paper clip is to scale. copy of tidesofdecemberposter copy – I wanted to mimic an old west woodblock typeset. The ship is simply a Threshold alteration. The background is an image of old acid-worn paper. dana-myspace-background – Like the filename suggests, this is a project I did for my girlfriend’s MySpace.com account. The texture was achieved by layering a high-resolution image of worn leather with a somewhat subtle gradient. The flowers all came from full-color amateur photographs. dial-soap-logo – I did this project last night to see if I could improve upon the Dial Antibacterial Soap logo. I wanted to create a shape that was emblematic of both a compass dial and of cleanliness. gap-logo – This was my follow-up project to the Dial Soap logo. The particular serif font that Gap uses on its current logo perhaps has an outdated feel in my opinion. Although the sans serif craze seems to be dying down again, I felt that a sans serif font would bring a more modern feel. Just as I did with Dial, I realized that there were some visual cues that gave both brands a certain amount of equity and familiarity. I felt as though the indigo/navy square was a keeper. gbandt-personal-ad-copy-web – Georgia Bank & Trust was considering hiring a new graphic designer, and I was the apparent candidate until budget cuts occurred. GB&T was founded in Augusta in 1989, so I decided to create a humorous and perhaps sexy take on their history by creating a personal ad about an 18 year-old Augusta native seeking a business relationship, but “maybe more”. This was a spec ad that I brought to my fourth interview. james-brown – For personal use, I created this image by making a complex clipping mask in the shape of The Godfather of Soul and placed it over a vintage wallpaper pattern that was topped by a gradient screen. The end result was a t-shirt. notesmag – The University of Alabama, who tried to hire me in December, asked me to design a proposed music magazine, mostly serving the student body. This was my first foray into InDesign. photorestoration1 -- Living in the Deep South, I know that there is a good market for the restoration of heirlooms, not the least of which are old photographs. Wanting to market myself for that type of work, I found a photograph online that was very damaged by mold, and also needed to have its colors re-balanced. studio 18 ideas combined copy – Currently my biggest client, Studio 18 is a music and art center and recording studio outside of Charlotte, NC. They have been in business for almost 10 years, but have never undergone a full branding. These two main logo sets were the first two that I came up with after hearing the initial requests of my client. My client initially decided upon set #2. Later on, I realized that the visual art aspect of his company was growing and felt like I needed to propose a new logo combining both art and music, to be seen later on in this portfolio.

studio-18-observer – Ninety percent of Studio 18’s clientele are youth. I wanted to create a friendly and inviting (and charming) logo combining elements of a guitar and an art palette. In doing so, the 3 dabs of paint on the “palette” also suggest a color scheme that Studio 18 can use throughout all of its marketing. test-treatment – My friend is starting an internet business selling handmade clothes and accessories to a particular demographic (free-spirited, nature-loving women). Her husband (also a graphic designer) and I have been working together on the branding. Knowing that my client is very interested in anything vintage, I found a font that is reminiscent of the Art Nouveau period. I manipulated the font to make it more dynamic and I created flourishes and small lilies (the company name is “Lilith’s Closet”). A challenging project, the most difficult part was to execute the lilies in a style that perfectly matched the font and the time period for which we were aiming. tidessylvia1 – This is a poster I designed for a Charlotte, NC band. Wanting to coordinate with the wonderful colors of the photograph, I created a very geometric and perpendicular layout. I had been experimenting during that period with the idea that slightly cutting off text would draw more attention to it, forcing the reader to spend more time discerning it. I also placed the day before the month in the date to give it a vague European feel. willmccranieposter1-- A popular singer/songwriter in Augusta, GA approached me about making a “road poster” for when he would be touring. This type of poster consists of a large blank space for handwriting details of a concert. This allows the file to be used over and over again for many different shows. He gave me a list of acceptable photographs from which I could work. I decided that I wanted a visual representation of sound emanating from the soundhole of the guitar. It was also important to me to essentially keep this a 3-color print job for cost consideration and for boldness and simplicity.
