1. STRUCTURE OF DOCTORAL DEGREES ACCORDING TO THE EUROPEAN HIGHER EDUCATION AREA (EHEA)
Doctoral studies in Spain are regulated by Royal Decree 1393/2007, on official university studies. To obtain a doctoral degree the student must pass a taught stage and a research stage. The set of taught and research activities that lead to the degree is referred to as the doctoral program.

Taught stage: The taught stage involves courses, seminars and any other activities organised in the framework of official university master’s degree courses at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), as well as an introduction to research course that has previously been approved by the competent authorities.

Research stage: In the research stage, students enroll and defend a thesis proposal, which is assessed by the unit in charge of the doctoral program. When they have passed the thesis proposal, they go on to write their doctoral thesis under the supervision of a professor on the doctoral program.

Doctoral thesis: A doctoral thesis is an original piece of research carried out by the student in any of the disciplines in which doctoral programs are taught at the UPC. The UPC has procedures in place for monitoring work on the thesis that ensure quality and guarantee the commitment of the student, who will defend it publicly to a panel of examiners who are experts on the topic. Most of the examiners on this panel will be external to the UPC.
