Reasons to work and live in Australia and New Zealand
All Doctors: 1. Lifestyle – The attractive and unique features of Australian and New Zealand lifestyle play a signi cant role in the decision to live and work here. With a fantastic climate, pristine beaches, ample space, more time for family and an abundance of outdoor activities, you will never be short of things to do. If you’re looking for a change, look no further. 2. Hours of Work – In both Australia and New Zealand most doctors enjoy the bene ts of a standard 38 hour working week. Any time that is required in addition to this is usually compensated at a higher hourly rate (often double time), making the work-life balance much more enticing than many other countries. Doctors are usually able to have some level of choice in dictating how much work they undertake outside of standard hours, and the on-call requirements are generally much lower than what is found in other health systems. 3. General Treatment / Recognition / Respect – Doctors in Australia and New Zealand are respected as highly skilled professionals, and are treated as valuable assets not only to the hospital, but to the wider community as a whole. In addition to this, a large portion of senior hospital management and all clinical directors in hospitals are doctors themselves, meaning the interests of doctors are well represented at an executive level. Junior Doctors: 1. Training Opportunities – Training programmes in Australia and New Zealand are generally of an exceptional standard, with the added advantage of less competition for available places. With far less people applying for Registrar positions, doctors are more likely to get into the training programme of their choice without an excessive need for research, audit, publications or unaccredited years. 2. Workplace Structure – The workplace structure in Australia and New Zealand is much less hierarchical than in other areas of the world, with most junior doctors addressing their consultants on a rst name basis. Feedback tends to suggest 4. Job Opportunities – Due to high demand for Consultants of all specialties in Australia and New Zealand there are often more opportunities available allowing doctors more choice with regard to location and position. This of course can in turn lead to higher negotiating power when it comes to nalising contract terms and salaries. Senior Doctors (Consultants): 1. Private Practice – In Australia the private sector is far more lucrative than the public sector, with over 50% of Australians taking out private health insurance. Most Consultants will do some work in the private sector, where they are able to charge higher rates for their services and enjoy an income that is additional to their regular fulltime role. 2. Working at Multiple Facilities – Many Consultants choose to work at more than one facility. By doing this Consultants are able to charge per session and can avoid participating in non-paid services such as education, audit or committee work unless they choose to, in which case any such work is usually remunerated at their notional rate. 3. Less Politics – In Australia and New Zealand there are signi cantly less hierarchical tiers in the healthcare system. This allows process changes to be made relatively quickly and with much less hassle. In addition, hospitals do not restrict Consultants from working at other facilities whilst contracted in Australia or New Zealand. 3. Paid Overtime – Whilst the standard working week is usually based around 38 hours in Australia and New Zealand, doctors are required to submit a timesheet detailing all hours worked. This ensures that any extra hours (in addition to those rostered) can be paid accordingly at a higher rate. that junior doctors are able to work with far greater autonomy, and in addition can enjoy a much higher sense of value and recognition within their roles.

FINDING A JOB IN AUSTRALIA OR NEW ZEALAND
There are four options: • • • • Find a job advertised in the medical press and apply directly Apply through a Recruitment Agency Get a recommendation through a friend who has worked in Australia or New Zealand Any combination of the above
You can apply to hospitals directly and you may be given a list of vacancies available, however it is often difficult to

find the most appropriate contact person in the relevant department.
Also, hospitals are often not able to advertise up and coming vacancies until the vacancy has 'officially' become available, therefore it is very beneficial to register with an agency to get a full list of up and coming vacancies. A recommendation from a friend is always useful as they have rst hand experience of that speci c job and so can usually give you great detail.

The medical press advertise some jobs, such as in the BMJcareers journal or on the BMJcareers website. Many vacancies are not advertised in the mainstream press so you are almost obliged to register with an agency to get full listings of vacancies.

(The only exception to this is if you have unconditional registration which is granted to all doctors who are graduates of Australasian medical schools or you have

paperwork ready before your submit your application.
