1. 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.
2. 31% of American women report being physically or sexually abused by an
intimate partner in their lifetime.
3. A woman is more likely to be injured, raped, or killed by a current or former
partner than by any other person.
4. In 2001, 85% of victims of DV were women.
5. Marital rape accounts for 25% of all rapes, affecting over 75,000 women each
year.
6. In 1999 intimate partner homicides accounted for 32% of the murders of females
and 4% of the murders of males.
7. 37% of women seeking injury related treatment in hospital emergency rooms
were injured by a current or former spouse or intimate partner.
8. Approximately 2.3 million people each year in the US are raped and/or
physically assaulted by a current or former spouse or intimate partner.
9. The cost of intimate partner violence exceeds $5.8 billion annually. This figure
includes $4.1 billion in direct health care expenses and $900 million in lost
productivity.
10. When the cost of direct property lost, ambulance service, police response, pain
and suffering and the criminal justice process are factored in, the total annual cost
of intimate partner violence is estimated to be $67 billion.
11. Over 500, 000 women and 180,000 men are stalked by an intimate partner
annually.
12. 3.3 million children witness domestic violence every year.
