PUBLIC TRANSIT?
A Panel on Alternative
Transportation
By the League of Women
Voters of Washington County
Date: April 20, 2011, 6:30 pm
Washington Regional
Education Center
Pat Walker Center, 12 East Appleby Road, Fayetteville.
Uvalde Lindsey, State Representative District 88
Jerre Van Hoose, Member of the Ozark Regional Transit Board,
former Mayor of Springdale
Phil Pumphrey, Executive Director, Ozark Regional Transit
In the next 2 years, we could
lose our current 12 bus
Ozark Transit System due to
major cuts in Federal
funding. Choices:
1.Depend on a limited sales tax
to build a better system as our
area has increased growth,
increased gas and energy costs,
and an aging population that
needs public transportation.
2.Depend on increased city
general funds to keep our limited
system as is. This will require
doubling current local funding.

information on transit needs.

SUSTAINABILITY AND THE GREEN REVOLUTION
You don’t have to be a scientist. You don’t have to be an
economist. You don’t have to be a fortune teller. You don’t
have to be all that smart. Common sense will tell you. Your gut
instincts will tell you that THIS is not a sustainable model. The
status quo cannot sustain us.
Revolutions start on “Main Street,” initiated at the “Grass
Roots,” and carried on the backs of “the people.” Revolutions by
their very nature, are not “top-down” affairs. The top has histori-
cally clung to the power of the status quo and proven unwilling or
uninterested in change. “The people,” tired of the status quo, take
to the streets and simply over-throw them.
We are moving full speed into yet another revolution – The
Green Revolution. Like all revolutions before, it was born out
of necessity. The pressure for change is building. The clock is
ticking. There is an urgency to change. Time is always on the
side of history. But this time it’s different. With this revolution,
time may very well side with geologic history. This planet will
continue on its merry path around it’s modest star, in an average
spiral galaxy, with or without us, one way or another, just like it
has done for 4.5 billion and 41 years.
Business as usual, the status quo, is no longer acceptable.
The paradigms established over a century ago, no longer ft our
new realities. We must change.
We need to reshape a world of our choosing, a world we
can all be proud of, a world which can sustain All of humanity.
We need to ensure for our children, and our childrens children,
the same quality of life that we have so enjoyed and taken for
granted.
It’s on us, “the people,” to live the changes today that we
would wish for our children to see tomorrow.
Have fun advancing your own sustainability and earning your
way to your own ECO-Green Card! Mikel Lolley
