Thesis Structure I recommend that you use this as a guide to organise your writing. If you deviate from the structure, this is fine, but please discuss it with me to make sure that your work covers all it needs. The thesis should be approximately 50,000 words (excluding Appendices and References). References). You will need to submit submit a draft for me to read the work in its entirety prior to submission, but at any rate you should be feeding me sections as you go along the process. I recommend you follow the format for the final thesis even when working in draft (see page 2 below). Title

Sounds easy - don t make it too complex or so funky that no one understands what the work is about!

Abstract

Again, these are hard to write - it should be about 250 - 300 words long. Give an overview of the topic, context, methods and findings.

Contents page

These need to give at a minimum the chapter headings and page numbers . Ideally you will also give section details too. You will need to attend to page numbers last.

Introduction

Set out the research context and questions clearly. You may like to say why you are doing the research.

Review of the literature

Here you discuss what you have read for the dissertation - and may well be including work you have read previously if relevant. Divide the review in sections according to the themes of the literature. Remember to look back at previous reading lists as well as to investigate in the ejournals and databases.

Methodology and Methods

Remind the reader of the research questions. Describe the methods you will be using and why you are using these methods. Refer to the literature you have read about research methods including work about analysis.

Data presentation, analysis

Describe your data and explain how you made sense of it. This may include you referring back to aspects of your literature review for comparison or for help in interpretation.

!

Findings and Results You might like to keep this with the data presentation chapter; however you need a separate section at least which talks about how you interpret your data in relation to the research questions.

Reflections & Conclusions

Reflect on the research process; would you have done anything differently? Was it an effective study? Did you find anything unexpected? Are there implications for further work? What is the main thing you discovered and is it useful?

References

You MUST follow the correct format for referencing and should keep an ongoing reference list while you work. Do not include work you have not cited in the text.

Appendices

These follow the references and should include ethics forms.

Format Word Length

50,000 words including quotations. This does not include abstract, footnotes, references or appendices. The word length does include quotations.

Quotations

Double quotation marks should be used in the first instance and single quotation marks when quoting inside a quotation. Short quotations, up to 40 words in length, can be included in the body of the text. Longer quotations of more than 40 words should be single-spaced, indented in a separate  paragraph without quotation marks.

Paper

You should use A4 and good quality paper.

Margins

Margins at the binding edge should be not less than 40 mm and other margins not less than 20 mm.

Font styles and sizes

Set out your work clearly and make it easy to read. A clear, standard typeface should be used, such as Times New Roman, Arial or Courier. Please use a 12 pt font.

Line spacing

Single spacing for indented quotations and footnotes. 1.5 spacing is best and does not waste too much paper.

Headings, subheadings

New chapters should begin on a fresh page. Chapter headings should be centred and sub-headings within chapters should be left-justified.

Pagination

Pages should be numbered consecutively throughout the thesis, including appendices.

Title page

Title page should include: full title of thesis, author’s name in full, Title of degree i.e. EdD, School of Education, month and year of submission.

Appendices

These go at the end of the thesis after the references. The (anonymised) ethics forms should be included.
