SUBMISSION DEADLINE FRIDAY 5 P.M.

How do you say thank you? These are only two words, simple enough, but for the deed that they are for, one so unimaginable in my, and most of our daily lives, they seem hollow. Though related by marriage, I really don’t know him. He is a decade plus younger than me, born of the generation and ilk that is more adept at virtual gaming than serious page turning. Fair enough. We are all created differently, formed by the sum of our experiences, good, bad and indifferent. We have never engaged in serious dialogue, just keeping the casual conversation lite, like the uncomfortable in-laws that we are. As is the norm the relationship is more tied to my wife’s than myself. My life, and I suspect that of the majority of Canadians, is comparatively easy. I’m not the one strapping on the body armour, making sure my rifle is clear of dust; or leaving my wife and child at home, thousands of miles away. No, I didn’t volunteer for this. He did. How can we compare our existences? One literally a matter of life and death, seeing humanity at its worst, sprinkled with moments of serene gifts; the other, surreal by nature. Here, we may wonder, when the news of the day, from a war zone, is played out on the TV screen, what it would be like. We trick ourselves in thinking that we would do the same; or we would do better, in our John Wayne frame of mind. When faced with adversity of this chilling nature, or even when we see something wrong in our own hum-drum lives we are more often than not cowards. Lets not believe any different. The virtual, surreal world is no match for what the few uniformed service men and women see, experience, and hopefully live through. Regardless of the cause, we have no right to judge the person. We have no inkling of the full dynamics of international politics despite the blurtings of an over-zealous, sensationalist media. Our pontifications and arrogance are only good for bar room, elbow bending boast of witticisms. The quick retort to impress our fellow man. We know not what reality is. The people who serve our country, ones that may even walk amongst us, do. They deserve more than idle verbiage of respectful tones, like if we were handing out candy bought by the cartful at some mega-store. They are the ones who have laid it all bare on the shores, mountains, jungles and desserts; in the cities and villages decimated by unspeakable horrors of our species own doing. They are the ones who risk it all to serve an idea. My brother-in-law serves in the Canadian Armed Forces and has served in Bosnia and has recently returned from Afghanistan. And despite our mutual distance, something that will never be bridged thanks to differences in age, perspectives and experiences, he, like thousands of others, deserves our most sincere respect. For honour and an idea are beyond most of our daily lives. TTT

peacekeeping has not been without sacrifice. Canada has the 2nd highest peacekeeping fatality rate with more than 114 deaths. As a result, it is not only important to remember and honour those who have served and have lost their lives in the cause of peace, but all who have contributed, and continue to contribute, to making this world a more peaceful place. The Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal (CPSM) was created following the receipt in 1998, by UN Peacekeepers, of the Nobel Peace Price in recognition of their collective efforts to safeguard peace. The Medal acknowledges the unique contribution of Canadian soldiers. More than an estimated 68,000 medals have been issued to date. The Potter’s Wheel Spins Bigger Business
One of the better known aspects of Eastend is Whitemud Clay Studio, the widely respected pottery studio run by Stephen Girard and Shon Profit. The focus of the business has been the creation of products that are as beautiful and useful as possible. The ergonomic facility of the pottery, the ease and comfort of use, has always been a hallmark of their pieces. Stephen Girard, originally from the Eastend, trained in arts and art restoration before returning here to start Whitemud Clay Studio in 1998. His attraction was the clay of the local area and the chemistry of its components. Stephen’s fascination with minerals and chemical reactions remains a strong factor of his professional career to this day. He continues to develop original glazes based on materials indigenous to the land. The benefit of working close to his source of clay has allowed him to reduce the necessity of travel to art shows and he now attracts a large clientele to the studio in town. On average 2,000 people each year pass through the Whitemud Clay Studio showroom, 35% of them being tourists. Shon Profit joined the studio in 2002 and her talent for complexity of work and sensual design have distinguished her pottery ever since. Today she is responsible for all the glazing and decorating of the pieces. She and Stephen have created a working partnership that enhances their creativity and draws additional original thinking from them as a team. Beyond the quality of work, Whitemud Clay Studio is known for its unconventional, open door marketing policy. People have always been invited to casually wander through the showroom without overweening supervision. Payments for purchases are often left tucked under note pads or stuffed in bowls. This approach has endeared Stephen and Shon to their clients and helps to generate a trusting and friendly small town atmosphere; just one simple quality that keeps tourists returning to Eastend time after time. Now the business is moving to a higher level as Whitmud Clay Studio reorganizes for operations in a new location in the eponymous Pottery Street venue. Bisquing of pots has already begunt here and the expanded studio/showroom is quickly taking shape. The building will be clad in lodge pole pine to create a rustic atmosphere and Shon is planning the design of another of her famous sculpture gardens for the large frontage which will blend the studio into its natural surroundings. Whitemud Clay Studio is now poised for expanded business through using to best advantage the unique qualities that have established its reputation in the past. JK

Andromeda Galaxy Facts - Closest spiral galaxy to our Milky Way galaxy is Andromeda and even traveling at the speed of light it would take 2 million years to reach it. Andromeda Galaxy, Milky Way, the Triangulum Galaxy, and about 30 smaller galaxies belong to a group called Local Group. There are 100 billion galaxies that we can observe. Prediction is that there is much more, but Hubble Space Telescope couldn't detect them. The Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way is predicted to merge within the next 5 billion years. In the event like this smaller galaxies are consumed by larger ones. Andromeda galaxy is twice as large as Milky Way. Did you know
