Me siento en las nubes cuando me hablan de la nube. Este juego de palabras me vino a la mente cuando conversaba con Andrés en referencia a los servicios de respaldo informático que ahora están disponibles para aquellos que dependemos de la computadora para llevar adelante nuestros trabajos. Porque es innegable que el mundo de la información ha cambiado con el internet, pero al mismo tiempo hemos de recurrir a métodos más sofisticados de conservar los datos que recopilamos sin perderlos de vista. Como bien dijo mi amigo, ¿en qué CD o pen drive guardé la foto que te quería mostrar? ¿Cuál fue el último archivo que contiene los cambios que hice en este documento? Y así innumerable situaciones en las que nos sentimos perdidos e incluso angustiados de no poder localizar la información que necesitamos desesperadamente para terminar un proyecto, y aquí surge la nube, la enorme e imaginaria nube. Me acuerdo que la última vez que hablé en persona con mi hermano Luis me dijo, “yo siempre ando en las nubes” y yo me quedé de piedra. Eso quiere decir que no entendí nada y pensé que era otra de sus bromas y no quise seguir preguntando para no pasar por ignorante. Pero de hecho me puso a investigar y encontré que sí , que la nube existe y es nada más y nada menos que un gran depósito compartido de información, que no está en tu casa y que seguramente nunca sabrás donde está físicamente pero te permite “mover” información sin tener que cargar con nada físico. A eso le llaman andar en las nubes, que es casi como volar pero en sentido figurado. Una ventaja enorme para aquellos que necesitan compartir e incluso modificar y agregar información con otros asociados de negocios o proyectos creativos. Dependiendo de la complejidad o del tamaño de los archivos que necesitas transportar, el servicio es gratis o pagas diferentes tarifas de acuerdo con el volumen. Nada que ver con esos tiempo en que editábamos revistas que nos obligaban a hacer dos y tres viajes a casa del linotipista para “levantar” los textos y hacer las correcciones necesarias para luego, con mucha delicadeza y siguiendo un diseño previo, hacer el montaje tijera en mano y una goma especial que permitía despegar y volver a pegar cada vez que era necesario. Vale decir que no pocas veces ciertas líneas desaparecían como por encanto o quizás por el agotamiento del artista del montaje. Y era un artista, porque debía rendir el espacio de tal manera que la presentación de la página resultara coherente y atractiva, abriendo espacio para ilustraciones y fotografías. Cosa que en la actualidad no se comprende muy bien por la facilidad que la tecnología nos depara. La verdad es que sí, recordar aquellos tiempos cuando no contábamos con computadoras y mucho menos con la “nube interactiva” me hace sentir como en las nubes, viendo las cosas desde una gran altura. Tocando la tecla de “enter” y enviando este periódico a la imprenta, y una vez más, que lo disfruten.

I feel in the clouds when people talk about the cloud. This play on words came to mind when I was talking to Andres regarding the IT support services now available for those of us who depend on a computer to carry out our jobs. Because it is undeniable that the world of information has changed with the Internet, but at the same time we must turn to more sophisticated methods to save our data without losing sight of it. Like my friend well said, in what CD or pen drive did I save the picture that I wanted to show you? What was the last file containing the changes I made in this document? And so countless situations where we feel lost and even anxious for not being able to locate the information we desperately need to finish up a project, and here is where the cloud comes in place, the enormous and imaginary cloud. I remember that the last time I talked in person with my brother Luis he told me, “I’m always in the cloud” and I stood there like a stone. This means that I didn’t understand a thing. I thought it was another of his jokes and I didn’t want to keep on asking not to be taken as an ignorant. But as a matter of fact, I started researching and found out that it is true, the cloud exists and it is none other than a huge shared information storage, which is not in your house and which you will probably never know where it is physically, but that allows you to “move” information without having to bear anything physical. That is what they call to be in the cloud, which is almost like flying but in a figurative way. A great advantage for those who need to share and even modify and add information with other business associates or creative projects. Depending on the complexity or the size of the files you need to transport, the service is free, or you can pay different rates according to the volume. Very different from those times where we edited magazines and we were forced to pay the typesetter two or three visits to “set matter” and make the necessary corrections, to then, with utmost delicacy and following an established design, complete the layout, “scissors on” and a special glue that allowed resetting the pieces as many times as needed. It’s worth saying that sometimes certain lines would disappeared like magic or maybe due to the montage artist’s exhaustion. And he was an artist, because he had to use the space in a way that the final design would be coherent and attractive, leaving space for illustrations and pictures. This is not well understood nowadays due to the ease technology gives us. Truth to be told, to remember those times in which we didn’t have computers and even less “the interactive cloud” makes me feel in the clouds, like seeing things from a great height. Pressing “enter” and sending this newspaper to the printer, once again, enjoy it!

Delaware recibirá $600.000 en fondos federales para AmeriCorps
Delaware recibirá $600.000 de Corporation for National and Community Services para apoyar a los miembros de AmeriCorps que se encuentran en organizaciones sin fines de lucro, religiosas o comunitarias a lo largo del estado en 2012-2013. Delaware to Receive $600,000 in Federal Funding for AmeriCorps
Delaware will receive $600,000 from the Corporation for National and Community Service to support AmeriCorps members at nonprofit, faith-based or community organizations across the state for 20122013. The money will be distributed by the Governor’s Commission on Community and Volunteer Service. AmeriCorps funds are administered by each State Service Commission to assist local groups in recruiting, training and placing AmeriCorps members in areas with a critical need. In Delaware, the funding will support the service of AmeriCorps members at four or more agencies. Interested agencies with a service opportunity in the priority areas of education, veterans and military families, economic opportunity, disaster management services, healthy outcomes and the environment must attend a mandatory information session in April and must submit proposals by May 4. In late June, the Governor’s Commission on Community and Volunteer Service will announce the recipients, with AmeriCorps members beginning their service at member organizations on Oct. 1. “The service of AmeriCorps members continues to be a worthy investment in the Delaware of today and of tomorrow,” Gov. Jack Markell said. “Vulnerable Delawareans receive vital services from AmeriCorps members in education, economic opportunity, health and emergency services. ‘Un Punto de Vista’ ‘A Matter Of View’

“Autismo”
De acuerdo a los expertos, se estima que en nuestro país de dos a seis niños de cada 1.000 tendrá autismo y es cuatro veces más probable que ocurra en hombres que en mujeres. Parecería que cada mes del año se le dedica a la concientización de una causa específica, y abril resulta ser uno de ellos. Este mes se viste de muchos colores o algunos dirían que los colores azul o morado son los colores reservados para el mes de abril para crear consciencia sobre el Autismo. Sin embargo, el símbolo número uno para ayudarnos a recordar esta causa es un rompecabezas. Las personas que apoyan esta causa llevarán puesta una cinta con una imagen multicolor de un rompecabezas, o simplemente una pieza de rompecabezas azul o morada. Ustedes se preguntarán, ¿qué es Autismo? Es un trastorno de desarrollo que aparece en los primeros 3 años de vida y afecta el desarrollo normal de las habilidades sociales y de comunicación del cerebro. Y de acuerdo a la organización Autism Speaks, los Trastornos en el Espectro Autista (ASD por sus siglas en inglés) están caracterizados por problemas de interacción social, dificultades de comunicación y una tendencia a abstraerse en tareas repetitivas. Estos síntomas pueden variar en cuanto a gravedad. Yo tengo una muy buena amiga que tiene un niño con autismo y puedo recordar vívidamente cuán difícil era para ella cuando se encontraba en público. Y recuerdo que asistía a muchos seminarios que la ayudaban a ella a ayudar a su hijo. No estoy segura de su nivel de autismo, pero recuerdo que tenía comportamientos repetitivos y no se comunicaba mucho, pero a medida que se hizo mayor, logró conectarse más con su alrededor y con la gente. En nuestro estado hay actualmente muchas actividades programadas y Autism Delaware está participando en una variedad de iniciativas ideadas para crear consciencia durante el mes de abril. Los eventos de la Caminata por el Autismo patrocinados por Autism Delaware es un esfuerzo a nivel estatal que comenzará el sábado 21 de abril, en Bellevue State Park en Wilmington y el domingo 22 de abril en Cape Henlopen State Park en Lewes. “Autism”
According to experts, it is estimate that in our country two to six children out of every 1,000 will have autism and males are four times more likely to have autism than females. It seems as though every month is dedicated to the awareness to a specific cause, and April proves to be one of them. This month is dressed in many colors or some would say that the color blue or purple are the colors set aside for the month of April in order to create awareness for Autism. However, the number one symbol to help remember this cause is a jigsaw puzzle. People showing their support to this cause, will be wearing a ribbon with multi colored jigsaw puzzle designed, or just a single blue or purple jigsaw puzzle piece. You may wonder what is Autism? It is a developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life, and affects the brain’s normal development of social and communication skills. And according to Autism Speaks, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by social-interaction difficulties, communication challenges and a tendency to engage in repetitive behaviors. These Symptoms may vary in severity. I have a good friend of mine that has a child with autism and I vividly remember how trying it was for her when she was out in public. And I remember her attending many seminars that would help her, help her son. I am not sure about the level of his autism, but I remember he had repetitive behavior and did not communicate much, but as he grew older, he became a little more engaging to his surroundings and people. In our state, there are currently many activities scheduled to take place and Autism Delaware is taking part in a variety of efforts that are intended to help raise awareness throughout the month of April. Theda Ellis, Executive Director of Autism Delaware, said “Autism Awareness Month is the perfect time to explain the needs, across the lifespan, of the people living with autism spectrum disorders and their families.” The Walk for Autism events sponsored by the Autism Delaware is a statewide effort that will start on Saturday, April 21st, at Bellevue State Park in Wilmington and Sunday, April 22nd, at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes. Besides raising awareness, Autism Delaware is trying to raise $200,000 which will help continue services for the needs of the many number of people and their families that are affected by autism throughout our state. Another condition of the Autism Spectrum Disorder is Asperger’s syndrome which its definition is “conditions that involve delays in the development of many basic skills, most notably the ability to socialize with others, to communicate, and to use imagination. As I was reading and doing some research on Autism and Asperger syndrome, I stumble upon some possible speculations of famous people that were born with one of these two syndromes such as, Daryl Hanna, Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, Emily Dickinson, George Washington and many more. BlAMe FOr HigH Oil Prices is MisPlAceD -eVeN By cONserVAtiVes There has been some media grumbling lately - including from some who are viewed as conservative leaning - about U.S. oil companies exporting oil. The complaint: The U.S. imports and refines lots of oil, so why isn’t that oil being sold to and used in the U.S. rather than to other countries? Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly recently blamed U.S. oil companies and the Obama administration for high oil prices. He got it half right - the second half. On Feb. 20, O’Reilly asserted: “There is plenty of oil in the U.S.A. Prices should not be at record levels. But they are because the oil companies are sending their products overseas to make more money. And what is the federal government doing about that? Zero, nothing. Nada. ... “Right now we are all being taken advantage of by an administration that has an anti-fossil fuel agenda and an oil industry that manipulates the U.S. market. Who is looking out for us? Nobody.” O’Reilly’s solution? An oil export tax to force U.S. oil companies to sell their products in the United States. To begin with, there’s a big difference between unrefined crude oil and refined oil products - just as there is a big difference between component cell-phone parts and a finished iPhone. The U.S. imports about 8.4 million barrels of crude oil a day, down from about 11 million barrels when demand was higher and domestic production lower. That imported crude is then refined, a manufacturing process in which the U.S. is the world leader - China is second, refining about half of the U.S. level. The United States exports almost no crude oil, just 0.3% of our stock. We do, however, export refined oil products - about 3 million barrels a day. Only about 20% of those refined exports is gasoline that can be used for cars. The other 80% is composed of various oil products and byproducts - e.g., diesel, kerosene and heavy fuel oil - some of which is unusable or unwanted here because of environmental laws and other reasons. Why export refined gasoline at all? First, the U.S. doesn’t always need it. When the economy is down, as it has been, Americans use less gasoline. Refined gasoline that doesn’t have an immediate U.S. buyer could be stored if there’s space, which costs money and adds to the price, or sold and shipped to another country, which sometimes makes more economic sense. For example, Mexico provides about 10% of U.S. crude oil imports, which the United States then refines - i.e., value-added manufacturing. Mexico buys back some of that oil at the higher refined price for its own use. If the U.S. couldn’t refine that oil for Mexico, our southern neighbor and trade partner would have to get it elsewhere. What U.S. refineries are doing is essentially what China does so effectively in many manufacturing areas - and some in the United States seem to envy and complain about. Raw materials or parts are shipped to Chinese companies, which are then processed or assembled, and the finished products are exported to other countries. That’s the story of the iPhone. U.S. refineries are a huge American success story. Second, location plays an important role. Have you ever bought moreexpensive gasoline at a nearby station, even though the price is lower at a station several miles away? It’s a cost-benefit calculation: Is the time and cost to travel to the lower-priced station worth it? Sometimes the answer is no. Is it possible that refined oil purchasers might make the same cost-benefit assessment that we as consumers engage in regularly? Suppose the state of Washington needs gasoline and a Texas Gulf Coast refinery has some available at the lowest price, but it would take time and money to ship it to Washington. However, a Canadian tanker has just arrived with refined oil to sell; it’s a little more expensive, but not by the time the transportation costs and wait-time are added to the Texas gas. Should Washington wait - perhaps paying more with shipping added in - just to “buy American”? Yes, there are efforts to manipulate oil prices: That’s one reason why OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) - made up mostly of Middle Eastern countries - was formed. But those are countries, not U.S. oil companies. The good news is that oil producers and refineries are increasingly able to meet U.S. consumer demand. The bad news is that some believe that oil companies were engaged in economic manipulation when companies weren’t able to meet U.S. demand, and now even when they are. His experience throughout the world in the oil services industry provides Wade with unique knowledge in energy technology, energy sources, national security and, finally, how many good jobs are generated by domestic exploration. This election is our last chance. We need people in Congress who are business savvy and well-grounded….Who know what it takes to create a budget, meet a payroll and solve real problems. Attorney General Biden and Lieutenant Governor Denn Announce Plan to Combat Cyberbullying
Attorney General Beau Biden and Lt. Governor Matt Denn announced a plan to put in place an effective statewide policy to combat cyberbullying in Delaware’s schools. The plan includes statewide public hearings to gather information to be used in developing the cyberbullying policy, and legislation designed to help school districts enforce the new policy. The plan consists of four steps: 1. Statewide public hearings in April to gather factual evidence from school administrators and parents about the type of off-campus activity causing disruption in our schools. 2. The drafting of a statewide cyberbullying policy based upon the evidence gathered at the hearings. 3. Issuance of a regulation by the state’s Department of Education requiring adoption of the statewide cyberbullying policy by public school districts and charter schools. 4. A new state law that will allow the Attorney General’s office to defend school districts and charter schools if their good faith enforcement of the statewide cyberbullying policy is subject to legal challenge. “Thanks to constant communication and social networking, there is no such thing as a ‘schoolyard bully’ anymore,” said Attorney General Biden. “Kids who face bullies face them all the time – at home, at school, and everywhere in between. For schools to be the safe places that children deserve, they must be able to effectively fight bullying that may originate off school grounds, but follows its victims 24 hours a day.” “We need to fight cyberbullying aggressively but also thoughtfully,” said Lt. Governor Denn. “Around the country, schools have been sued when trying to enforce cyberbullying policies – and even here in Delaware, the one school district that attempted to implement a cyberbullying policy was threatened with litigation. This approach, where we gather the facts first, write a policy based on those facts, and then stand behind the policy with the full force of our Attorney General’s office, will give us the best chance to deal with this growing problem.” The legislation necessary for implementation of this plan was introduced in the Senate by Senator David Sokola, and will be sponsored in the House of Representatives by Representative Terry Schooley. Senator Sokola and Representative Schooley are the chairs of their chambers’ respective education committees, and the prime sponsors of companion legislation they introduced with the Lt. Governor and Attorney General earlier this month addressing the reporting of bullying incidents. “A lot of the kinds of controls that have worked in other media haven’t been as effective in the on-line world because of instantaneous and permanent nature but we know some things have worked,” said Sen. David Sokola, D-Newark, the bill’s leading sponsor. “And we can’t give up; we need to look at what’s being done to successfully curb cyberbullying elsewhere and use it here.” “In this age of technology, young people use many different forms of social media, computers and cell phones to communicate and publicly post information,” said Rep. Terry Schooley, D-Newark. “Unfortunately, these means of communication can be used to bully other young people in a more public way than previous generations could ever imagine. By introducing this legislation, we are trying to stay ahead of the curve and protect our children and grandchildren from cyber-bullying and let people know that bullying in any form is wrong and should not be tolerated.” The statewide public hearings follow. Eventos en Delaware crean consciencia sobre asuntos de salud mental en los niños
Un estimado de 4.5 a 6.3 millones de niños y jóvenes en los Estados Unidos sufren de un disturbio emocional serio. Aproximadamente 65% a 80% de estos niños y jóvenes no reciben los servicios especializados de salud mental y el apoyo que ellos necesitan. An estimated 4.5 to 6.3 million children and youth in the United States suffer from a serious emotional disturbance. Como técnico en comunicaciones del Ejército, Eli Valenzuela tomó un curso por correspondencia en tapizado mientras servía en la Segunda División Armada en Alemania. Nunca se imaginó que el curso lo llevaría a tomar una segunda carrera y a ser propietario de un negocio multimillonario. Luego de prestar su servicio militar, Valenzuela regresó a Texas y comenzó a trabajar en servicio civil de tapicería de aeronaves militares y luego se mudó a Delaware, en donde obtuvo un cargo en la Base de la Fuerza Aérea Dover tapizando el C-5 Galaxy, una de las aeronaves más grandes del mundo y el transportador aéreo más grande en el inventario de las Fuerzas Aéreas. Ingredientes 2 cucharadas de aceite de oliva 2 zanahorias medianas, cortadas en cubitos 2 tallos medianos de apio, cortados finamente 1 cebolla pequeña amarilla, picada finamente 2 dientes de ajo, picados finamente (molidos) 1 cucharadita de orégano 1 cucharadita de albahaca ½ cucharadita de pimienta negra 2 tazas de lentejas 1 lata (14½ onzas) de tomates machacados 2 tazas de caldo de verduras 6½ tazas de agua Preparación 1. En una cacerola grande, caliente el aceite a fuego mediano. Agregue las zanahorias, el apio y la cebolla. Cocine las verduras, removiéndolas hasta que la cebolla esté suave. 2. Agregue el ajo, el orégano, la albahaca y la pimienta negra. Cocine por 2 minutos más. 3. Agregue las lentejas, el tomate, el caldo de verduras y el agua. Cubra la olla hasta que hierva. Ingredients 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 medium carrots, diced 2 medium stalks celery, chopped 1 small yellow onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon dried basil ½ teaspoon ground black pepper 2 cups dry lentils 1 can (14½ ounces) crushed tomatoes 2 cups vegetable broth 6½ cups water Preparation 1. In a large soup pot, heat oil over medium heat. Add carrots, celery, and onions; cook and stir until the onion is tender. 2. Stir in garlic, oregano, basil, and pepper. Cook for 2 minutes. 3. Stir in lentils and tomatoes, then add the vegetable broth and water. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for at least 1 hour or until lentils are tender. 4. Store leftovers in the refrigerator and reheat on the stove or in the microwave. The soup will taste better the next day!

VIDA!™ Latina Breast Health Forum
Over 250 latina community members attend second annual vida!™ latina breast health forum in georgetown
GEORGETOWN, DE (March 30, 2012)—This past Saturday over 250 community members participated in the Second Annual VIDA!™ Latina Breast Health Forum sponsored by the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC). This free event was held at the Grace United Methodist Church and educated participants about breast cancer screenings, treatment and survivorship. The forum, which was presented in Spanish, was not just for women as it included information about prostate cancer and general health. Adelia Marroquin-Jerez spoke at the event about her breast health journey that started at last year’s VIDA!™ conference. Other speakers included Sunny Villafañe of DBCC who spoke about breast health and breast cancer and Eli Valenzuela who spoke about prostate cancer. The event included a free lunch for all attendees which was donated by La Tonalteca. Free health screenings for skin cancer, diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol and osteoporosis were available. The Women’s Mobile Health Screening Van provided screenings mammograms for women who made appointments for that day. The event was sponsored by the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, La Tonalteca, Maxima 900 AM Radio, Delaware Department of Health and Social Services, Grace United Methodist Church, and Beebe Medical Center. “We are very happy with the response to our 2nd Annual VIDA! Latina Breast Health Forum held in Georgetown,” said DBCC Program Manger Cheryl Doucette. “This is a great way for members of the community to have access to much needed screenings and information concerning their health.”

From Humble Beginnings…
Delaware’s 2012 SBA Small Business Person of the Year
First State Manufacturing owners Eli Valenzuela, Sher Valenzuela, and Ashley Wolfe have been selected as the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Delaware Small Business Persons of the Year. This is the story of the genesis and growth of their business. It began in 1998 with a man, a woman, a sewing machine, and a dream in a Milford, Delaware garage. A humble beginning that today has become First State Manufacturing (FSM), a thriving business employing more than 40 technicians working in a new 66,000 sq. ft. facility funded by a $650,000 Small Business Administration (SBA) 504 loan. As an Army communications technician, Eli Valenzuela took a correspondence course on upholstery while serving with the Second Armored Division in Germany. Little did he know that the course would lead to a second career and ownership of a multi-million dollar business. After his military service, Valenzuela returned to Texas and first worked in civil service upholstering military aircraft and later moved to Delaware, where he secured a position at Dover Air Force Base upholstering the C-5 Galaxy, one of the largest aircraft in the world and the largest airlifter in the Air Force inventory. Oftentimes, as he discussed his work day with his wife Sher, he would think out loud about how much American taxpayers paid for upholstery work contracted out for the C-5, specifically how he knew ways to provide a better product at a better price. Together the husband and wife decided that they should start a business to do just that. With help from SBA resource partners SCORE and the Small Business Technology and Development Center the Valenzuela’s composed a business plan and opened First State Manufacturing in their garage with an old but reliable sewing machine named “Betsy.” Rapidly outgrowing the garage, they secured financing through a SBA $20,000 Express loan and leased space in a 2,000 sq. ft. warehouse. Providing higher quality at lower costs led to rapid growth and with assistance from their local Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) they secured more and larger contracts. Earning an SBA 8(a) certification enabled FSM to leverage a number of long-term contracts from 2000 to 2009 as the business expanded to include military and commercial contracts across the country. Mr. Valenzuela, president, is known for his ability to create, design and manufacture textile products to meet a commercial or defense customer’s exacting specifications and has led FSM to more than $10 million in government contracts. Ms. Valenzuela has significant experience in public relations and marketing campaigns for FSM and a variety of Fortune 500 companies. The important addition of Ashley Wolfe to the ownership and management team brought a different area of expertise to the business as executive director. Wolfe contributes his 30-year background in manufacturing and production with an emphasis on efficiency and innovation. Together the three principals have developed a strong management team with a workforce that produces and delivers quality products while providing above-average wages to more than 43 employees. By 2001 FSM was ready to grow again, with a $96,500 SBA backed 7(a) loan to modernize and expand their inventory, with recurring business from national restaurant and hotel chains. Their reputation grew for quality, cost effectiveness and innovation. Through extensive testing with Chili’s restaurant chain, FSM developed a trademarked seating product, Speedy Cushion, made with environmentally-friendly cushion foam and a “green” maintenance protectant that reduces fading from the sun. The 9/11 tragedy brought a massive downturn in business to FSM and challenged their very existence. Once again FSM turned to SBA for assistance, with a $65,800 SBA Disaster loan they were able to maintain their business and employees until revenues returned. The heart of FSM’s business lies in unique, customized, military aircraft solutions. FSM has consistently demonstrated its ability to provide quality, durable products to meet customized solutions. small sampling of innovative products FSM provides and awards won include: • FSM was chosen by the US Air Force to participate in a joint venture to standardize manufacture and installation of all C-5 insulation due to its innovation and knowledge of C-5 Galaxy fuselage insulation characteristics. • During reengineering of the V-22 Osprey aircraft, FSM provided custom-made fabric oil plugs and engine covers needed for the tilt-wing aircraft to remediate several issues including durability, safety, storage ease, and timely installation. • FSM developed a customized watertight cover, now in use throughout the military, for the Joint Air to Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM). • Recipient of the Lockheed Martin Small Business of the Year award in for superior quality and early completion of work. • SBA Minority Small Business Person of the Year for Delaware and Region Three. • U.S. Defense Logistics Agency Vendor of Excellence for Small Disadvantaged Businesses. • Named by Delaware Today as one of the “Best Places to Work” in Delaware. Using virtually every SBA program and resource partner available, FSM reached out to the state of Delaware’s resources as well. With funding from the Delaware Economic Development Office they trained staff to receive AS9100 Quality Certification, which allowed FSM to secure contracts for the commercial equivalent of the military aircraft it supported, such as the Boeing 737, in need of insulation and upholstery. FSM also worked with the Delaware Manufacturing Extension Partnership to improve processes and efficiency and after receiving support from the Delaware Workforce Investment Board, FSM’s owners now serve on their executive board. Through good economic conditions and bad FSM has a history of growth and job creation. From two employees in 1998 to 43 employees in 2011, FSM has continued its growth while many companies were reducing staff. With the recent expansion of facilities, employment is forecasted to continue to increase steadily over the next three years. Revenue growth over the last four years has more than doubled. FSM’s revenue growth has been generated through the expansion of its sales from primarily local markets to national markets, national chains, government contracting, and international markets. Consistent with the growth in revenues, FSM has also demonstrated growth in profitability. Profits declined during the recession and due to increased occupancy costs, personnel and administrative expenses absorbed while transitioning to the plant’s new facility. However, throughout the first six months of 2011, FSM reported net income that placed them on track to double their pre-recession profits. FSM’s owners actively give back to their local community and the state: • Supports Junior Achievement expansion in Delaware: FSM speaks to and supports area students to broaden their perspective of career and entrepreneurial paths, and donated 13,000 sq. ft. to establish a Junior Achievement campus. • Partners with City of Milford and State of Delaware (Department of Labor) to establish “First State Moves the Nation,” a Small Business Manufacturing Accelerator, and donated 15,000 sq. ft. of space to establish a non-profit virtual center to guide manufacturers to state and federal resources. • Serves as executive board member of Delaware Workforce Investment Board • Received First Place in “Megabizfest,” SBA-supported Business Plan competition for GrowUSA, a line of information products that enables small businesses to succeed through leveraging of small business state and federal resources. • Co-creators with State of Delaware: first Governor’s Entrepreneurial Business Conference in 2009. • Monthly financial supporter of local family-oriented radio station and orphanages throughout Africa, India and the Philippines to provide basic necessities and advanced education degrees to children who would not otherwise succeed. • Provides free sewing and upholstery classes to the local community. • Chair, City of Milford Economic Development Panel. FSM was built on the concept of doing more than what is required. When asked where that extra effort originated Valenzuela said, “As a second generation Mexican-American, I grew up very poor in the projects of Corpus Christi, Texas. My father told me “Eli, never be like a wheel barrow… it only goes as far as you push it.” This instilled the belief that hard work is rewarded and that hard work would be his only path to success – clearly expressed in FSM’s moniker and business practice: “AND THEN SOME.” From humble beginnings and hard work, great things can come.

Programa de Asistencia en Impuestos para Personas de la Tercera Edad de Wilmington . Visión general del Programa de Asistencia en Impuestos para Personas de la Tercera Edad de Wilmington.
El Programa de Asistencia en Impuestos para Personas de la Tercera Edad de Wilmington está diseñado para asistir a los dueños de viviendas de Wilmington de 62 años o más que se enfrentan a un embargo inminente de sus propiedades debido a que no han cancelado los impuestos correspondientes a la propiedad, o facturas de servicio de agua o de alcantarillado. loS SeñoreS Del tiemPo El Penn Museum de Filadelfia explora los orígenes de las predicciones del fin del mundo en 2012 con la nueva e importante exhibición MAYA 2012: Los Señores del Tiempo, una exhibición de estreno mundial que se inaugura el 5 de mayo, el Penn Museum confronta la fascinación actual con el año 2012 y compara las predicciones de un apocalipsis que transformaría el mundo con sus supuestos orígenes en la antigua civilización maya. La exhibición se presentará hasta el 13 de enero de 2013. Summer DAy cAmP Autism Delaware offers summer day camp in Lewes Applications are available at www. delautism.org—and due by April 24. This year’s program runs from August 20 to 23 from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Specifically designed to accommodate children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) who will be in grades 3 to 11 in the next school year, the program offers structured summer activities in a safe and supported environment. FiVe tHiNgS you mAy Not KNoW About SBA Disaster Assistance Free SBA/Agility Webinar In the aftermath of a natural or man-made disaster, you don’t have to be a small business owner to get recovery assistance from the U.S. Small Business Administration. But did you know that SBA’s disaster assistance program is the agency’s only direct loan program? Did you also know that SBA can provide assistance to communities in the aftermath of a disaster, independent of a Presidential disaster declaration? Interesting and useful facts about the range and depth of SBA’s disaster assistance programs will be presented during the April 10 webinar hosted by Agility Recovery Solutions and SBA. The webinar will focus on questions typically asked by the public and local media after a disaster. In addition to clarifying SBA’s partnership with FEMA, we’ll also talk about SBA’s outreach to local banks to expand the support network for business recovery after a disaster. SBA has partnered with Agility to offer business continuity strategies through its “PrepareMyBusiness” website. ANNuAl PHotogrAPHic Art exHiBit The Coastal Camera Club will again present to the public its annual photographic art exhibit and sale at the Nassau Valley Vineyards in Lewes, June 2-28, 2012. The Vineyard is open daily Monday through Saturday, 11 am5pm and Sundays, noon to 5 pm. Over 30 participating artists will be displaying their art photography in this unique local vineyard setting. In addition to enjoying the hanging art, visitors can observe the wine cellar through long glass viewing stations, a delightful backdrop to the art images. An Artists Reception will be held on June 10th, 2-4pm where visitors will be able to interact with the artists, ask questions, and learn more about the many different styles and techniques used by the represented artists. BrANDyWiNe SProutS The Brandywine Sprouts chapter of Roots & Shoots, a program of the Jane Goodall Institute, will be featured alongside the Delaware Museum of Natural History’s upcoming special exhibit, Conservation Quest, on display until May 28, 2012. By focusing on the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, the Brandy- wine Sprouts will entertain and educate children and adults about how singleuse plastic bags impact our environment and how we can minimize their effects. The Brandywine Sprouts will be on hand from 12 - 4 p.m. on April 14, allowing visitors the opportunity to learn how to reduce their use of plastic shopping bags, reuse the bags that they have, and recycle all the bags that they can, plus, throughout the duration of Conservation Quest, visitors can enjoy the movie Bag It! in the Museum’s DuPont Auditorium.
