Casi el mismo día en que en muchos países se celebra el día del amor (algunos lo llaman el día de la secretaria, con toda la ironía del mundo) el doce de febrero también se celebra en mi país, Venezuela, el día de la juventud. Y de verdad que ambas celebraciones hasta se compaginan, sobre todo cuando pensamos que la juventud está llena de sueños e ilusiones y a los enamorados muchas veces los calificamos de ilusos y soñadores, así que vamos dándole vueltas al mismo circo. Lo que sucede es que mientras que la juventud, divino tesoro, llega y se va y solo es una aventura transitoria en nuestras vidas, por más que nos queramos seguir sintiendo (con derecho) jóvenes a los ochenta años, las arrugas llegan, las canas nos cubren o descubren la cabeza y nos hinchamos o encogemos a la voluntad del paso del tiempo. Pero el amor es otra cosa muy diferente que va y viene y nos hace bailar a diferentes ritmos en cualquier momento o lugar. Ya decía el cantor que “cuando el amor llega así de esta manera, uno no tiene la culpa, quererse no tiene horario, ni fecha en el calendario, cuando las ganas se juntan” así que sabemos que hay muchas clases de amor y lo debemos celebrar en todas sus variables, porque la verdad es que no vale la pena vivir la vida sin amor. No seremos eternamente jóvenes, pero podemos estar eternamente enamorados de tantas cosas bellas que tenemos la suerte de encontrar en nuestro camino. En este siglo XXI globalizado, en constante transformación, ser joven es un reto que presenta sus ventajas y desventajas, como por ejemplo no ha habido generación dotada de más y mejores tecnologías para comunicarse o conectarse (como se le llama ahora a la interacción entre pares) y nunca al mismo tiempo parecieran menos creativos o involucrados en los procesos sociales. Claro hasta que nos llevamos la sorpresa, por ejemplo, de lo que pasó en Egipto, donde juventud y tecnología caminaron de la mano para derrocar a un tirano. Pero no esta sucediendo los mismo en este país en que la juventud, por lo menos la hispana, no tiene derecho a soñar, o mejor dicho, la han dejado con el sueño en la mano ya que cada vez postergan más la aprobación del Dream Act, que como ya hemos repetido varias veces, le abre las puertas del futuro a nuestros jóvenes. Por eso pensamos que quizás no sea tan mala oportunidad para pedir un poco de amor por el sueño de nuestros jóvenes en fechas hermanas en que celebramos el amor y la juventud.

Almost the same day many countries celebrate the day of love (some call it Secretary’s Day, all irony intended), on February 12th we celebrate in our country, Venezuela, Youth Day. And honestly both celebrations even match, mainly when we believe that young people are full of hope and dreams, and that many times we label people in love as naive and dreamers, so we continue circling the same circus. What happens is that while youth, sacred treasure, is once here and then it’s not, and is just a temporary adventure in our lives, even though we want to feel young at eighty (rightfully so), wrinkles appear, grey hair cover (or not) our heads and we puff up or shrink down at the mercy of time. But love is something very different that comes and goes and makes us dance at diverse rhythms at any moment in any place. As the singer used to say “When love arrives like this, in this way, you are not to blame; love has no schedule or a date on the calendar when desires are joined,” so we know there are many kinds of love and we must celebrate it in all its varieties, because honestly, life is not worth living without love. We will not be forever young, but we can be forever in love with so many beautiful things we are lucky enough to have found in our path. In this ever-changing global XXI century, to be young is a challenge that has its advantages and disadvantages, like for instance, there hasn’t been a generation better equipped with more and improved technology to communicate among themselves, or to connect (new term for peer interaction) and at the same time seeming so little creative or engaged in social processes. Of course, until we are surprised by, for instance, what happened in Egypt, where youth and technology walked hand-in-hand to overthrow a tyrant. But the same is not happening in this country where young people, at least Hispanic young people, have no right to dream, or better put, have been left with their dream in their hand when the approval of the Dream Act is once again postponed, that as we have stated before, opens the doors of the future to our youth. That’s why we think that it might not be a bad opportunity to ask for some love for the dream of our young people in these fraternal dates when we celebrate love and youth.

Expandiendo la Visión del Mundo
Lo más importante que podemos hacer por las niñas es expandir su visión del mundo.
>Gabriel Pilonieta-Blanco Para las niñas hispanas, principalmente las que viven en los condados de Kent y Sussex, en Delaware, las oportunidades de crecer, conocer y ampliar puntos de vista están muy limitadas. Prácticamente no hay donde ir después de la escuela e incluso en los clubes que están abiertos para ellas, muchas veces se limitan a “ver a los chicos jugar el basquetbol.” De allí que Girls Inc. ha desarrollado una iniciativa para poner remedio a esto en un ambiente seguro y que les de confianza. Brenda A. Algar es la directora ejecutiva de Girls Inc. en Delaware, una organización sin fines de lucro que inspira a las niñas a ser fuertes, inteligentes y autosuficientes. En esta conversación nos informa de los proyectos que tienen para las niñas hispanas de Delaware. “Ya trabajamos con mas de 15.000 niñas en Delaware”, dice Brenda, “y ahora queremos enfocarnos particularmente en las hispanas”. En principio a nivel nacional se ha trabajado por tres años en un proyecto encabezado por Damarys Bonilla que brinda atención a las niñas hispanas, que presta especial atención a su familia, al compromiso de los padres con sus hijas y de preservar sus raíces culturales, y ahora a través de la Fundación Arsht-Cannon se han logrado los fondos para implementar esta iniciativa en Delaware. Como objeto principal tienen lograr un programa en que las niñas desarrollen su potencial, se valoren y conozcan y defiendan sus derechos. Por el momento se encuentran en la etapa de planificación y quieren hacer un llamado a todas las personas y organizaciones que tengan ideas de cómo beneficiar a las niñas hispanas de hasta 16 años de estos condados a que se pongan en contacto con ellos. Se trata de conseguir mentores, profesionales entrenados que vayan a los lugares más cercanos a las familias, incluso los campamentos de casas móviles, o iglesias, escuelas o bibliotecas para enseñar a estas niñas a cultivar una imagen positiva de sí mismas. “La idea”, dice Algar, “es que podamos constituir un grupo de asesores con padres de familia, miembros de la comunidad, trabajadores sociales con experiencia, escuelas, iglesias etc., para integrar un plan que tenga coherencia para el futuro”, y agrega “queremos trabajar con las organizaciones comunitarias que no ofrecen servicios para después de la escuela de educación informal, sobre todo en el área de ciencias, matemáticas y tecnología”. Con emoción Albar dice que han recibido múltiples correos electrónicos de niñas de Sussex que están emocionadas de saber que pronto estarán allí. >Gabriel Pilonieta-Blanco For Hispanic girls, mainly those who live in the Kent and Sussex counties in Delaware, the opportunities to grow, know and expand points of view is very limited. There’s virtually no place to go after high school, and even in the clubs that are open to them, many times they just “watch the guys play basketball.” Thus Girls Inc. has developed a new initiative to better this situation in a safe and trustworthy environment. Brenda A. Algar is the executive director for Girls Inc. in Delaware, a non-profit organization that inspire girls to be tough, smart and self-sufficient. During this conversation she told us about the projects they have in mind for Delaware’s Hispanic girls. “We are already working with more than 15,000 girls in Delaware,” says Brenda, “and now we want to focus particularly in the Hispanics ones.” Basically we have been working for the past three years in a nation-wide project chaired by Damarys Bonilla supporting Hispanic girls, giving special attention to their families, to the commitment of the parents with their daughters and to preserve their cultural heritage. And now, through the ArshtCannon Foundation, we have obtained funds to implement this initiative in Delaware. Their main object is to design a program where the girls can develop their potential, take pride on themselves, and get to know and to defend their rights. They are at the planning stage for the moment and they want to call upon all people and organizations from these counties with ideas on how to benefit Hispanic girls of up to 16 years of age to contact them. It’s about finding mentors, trained professionals to go to the places closest to the families, even mobile home parks, churches, schools or libraries to teach these girls how to develop a positive image of themselves. Algar says that “The idea is to be able to form a counseling group with parents, community members, experienced social workers, schools, churches, etc., to integrate a coherent plan for the future,” and adds, “We want to work with the community organizations not offering any services for after informal education school, mainly in the areas of sciences, mathematics and technology.” With great emotion, Albar says they have received many emails from girls from Sussex who are excited to know they will soon be there. In the Girls Inc. System, trainers are professionally prepared to fulfill their job, they are not volunteers and they teach all year long, even offering summer programs, and if necessary (due to transportation difficulties in the counties), they will go wherever they are needed with mobile workshops. “The important thing here is to overcome the barriers blocking these girls’ future, and that is why we need people that would want to work with us,” stresses Algar. Segundo Día Anual del Proyecto Comunitario de Wilmington a celebrarse el sábado 5 de mayo de 2012
Reforzando el hecho de que los activos más importantes de Wilmington son sus vecindarios, el Alcalde de Wilmington James M. Baker, el Concejal para Asuntos Extraordinarios Charles “Bud” Freel y el comité Clean Wilmington hoy dieron a conocer al público información concerniente a la segunda celebración anual del Wilmington Community Project Day (Día del Proyecto Comunitario de Wilmington). El evento de este año, que se llevará a cabo en los vecindarios a lo largo de la ciudad, tendrá lugar el sábado 5 de mayo de 2012, entre las 9:00 am y las 12:00 del mediodía. Wilmington Community Project Day es un día de servicios voluntarios durante el cual se anima a los residentes de Wilmington a demostrar su espíritu comunitario organizando actividades que mejoren sus vecindarios de alguna manera. Reinforcing the fact that Wilmington’s greatest asset is its neighborhoods, Wilmington Mayor James M. Baker, City Council Member At-Large Charles “Bud” Freel, and the Clean Wilmington Committee today released information concerning the second annual Wilmington Community Project Day. This year’s event, which will take place in neighborhoods throughout the City, will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2012 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 Noon. Wilmington Community Project Day is a day of volunteer service during which Wilmington residents are encouraged to demonstrate their community spirit by organizing activities that improve their neighborhoods in some way. Last year, more than 50 community groups, churches, businesses, schools, and other non-profit organizations came together on Community Project Day to make neighborhoods look more beautiful and make life better for people and organizations in need of assistance. Activities in 2011 included litter removal, beautification projects, landscaping maintenance, and community garden projects. “Wilmington Community Project Day proved last year and will prove again this year that there are continual examples of hard work and community spirit demonstrated by various individuals, organizations and neighborhood associations in our City,” said Mayor Baker. “Please plan now to participate in this year’s event by organizing a project that benefits your community.” Council Member Freel said projects could include anything from planting a tree to volunteering at one of our city’s senior centers to something unique that a community or individual would like to submit. Residents are urged to begin planning now for May 5, 2012. The attached flyer and registration form contains additional information that is perfect for sharing among neighbors and community groups. Applications should be mailed, faxed, or emailed to event organizers no later than Friday, April 20, 2012. All citizens who participate in a registered project are invited to a community gathering beginning at 12:30 p.m. on May 5 at the Redding City/County Building to celebrate the events’ collective successes. Event organizers thank Wilmington’s Neighborhood Planning Councils and The Home Depot on Miller Road for sponsoring the 2012 Wilmington Community Project Day.

‘Un Punto de Vista’ ‘A Matter Of View’

“Corazón”
Cuando uno asocia colores con cosas, no puede evitar pensar que el color rojo le pertenece al mes de febrero. Sí, febrero es el mes del Corazón, y digo esto de manera figurativa y literal. Rojo es el color de la pasión y el poder, y la semana pasada tuve la oportunidad de vestirme de rojo para apoyar el mes que la Asociación Americana del Corazón (American Heart Association AHA) ha reservado para su campaña “Vístete de rojo por las mujeres”. Esta campaña aspira algún día erradicar las enfermedades del corazón y los infartos en las mujeres. Vístete de rojo por las mujeres es un movimiento que lucha contra las enfermedades del corazón y su objetivo principal es salvar la vida de las mujeres. ¿Sabías que las enfermedades del corazón son la principal causa de muerte de las mujeres en los Estados Unidos? Sí, yo sé: alarmante, ¿no? Yo sinceramente pensaba que el cáncer era el principal criminal, pero de acuerdo a la AHA, cada año cerca de 500.000 mujeres norteamericanas mueren por enfermedades cardiovasculares. Se cree, o muchos asocian las enfermedades del corazón y los ataques al corazón como enfermedades típicas de los hombres, cuando en realidad esto está muy lejos de la verdad. La campaña Vístete de rojo para las mujeres está educando y desmitificando esta creencia aupando a las mujeres para que estén conscientes de esta enfermedad y se realicen evaluaciones periódicas de colesterol y de presión sanguínea, además de que mantengan una dieta saludable, y con un poco de suerte, les gustaría que todos incorporaran una rutina de ejercicios a su vida. La otra asociación que hacemos con el color rojo en esta época específica del año es la celebración del Día de San Valentín. Ahhh… ese sentimiento de amar y ser amado… No me refiero al amor que podemos sentir por nuestros padres, hijos, hermanos o amigos, me estoy refiriendo al “amor” que uno siente por ese “alguien” especial. Quizás ese hombre o esa mujer en tu vida, esa esposa o marido, ese compañero(a) de vida… Muchos poetas y escritores han utilizado su pluma para verbalizar ese sublime sentimiento de éxtasis y desesperanza. Porque seamos sinceros, cuando Cupido te clava su flecha profundamente en tu corazón, la vida como la conocías hasta ahora cambiará para siempre. Soy tan romántica, y todavía estoy esperando pacientemente ese sentimiento de éxtasis y desesperanza que uno tiene cuando ha sido flechado por Cupido. Yo acobijaría nuevamente ese sentimiento que sólo el amor provoca. Algunos dirían que el sentimiento del amor es un pico natural que sentimos, pero si ese fuera el caso, qué maravilloso sería si lo pudiéramos encerrar en una botella. Esto me recuerda al personaje Jean-Baptiste Grenouille de la película del 2006 “Perfume” quien estaba tratando de crear esa fragancia especial y en esa búsqueda se convirtió en un muy conocido asesino. Una vez que creó y embotelló esa fragancia, el efecto que una sola gota de ella podría tener en cualquier ser humano era de completo frenesí, y la belleza parecía que estaba siempre alrededor de las personas bajo sus efectos. Pero es mejor dejar algunas cosas al orden original de la naturaleza y no forzar lo que es de uno y lo que uno debe experimentar. Mantengan su cuerpo y su corazón saludable, y si pueden, amen profundamente… ¡Feliz Día de San Valentín!

“Heart”
When you associate colors to things, you can’t help to think that the color red belongs to the month of February. Yes, February is the month of the Heart and I mean this in a figurative and literal way. Red is the color of passion and power and last week I got to dress in red in order to support the month set aside by the American Heart Association (AHA) and their campaign “Go Red For Women.” This campaign strives to someday wipe out heart disease and stroke in women. Go Red for women is a movement that fights heart disease and their main goal is to save women’s lives. Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of women in America? I know, how alarming is that? I truly thought that cancer was the number one offender, but according to the AHA, each year, nearly 500,000 American women die of cardiovascular disease. It is believed or many associate heart disease and heart attack as a men heart disease, when in reality this is far from the truth. Go Red For Women campaign is educating and demystifying this knowledge by empowering women to be aware of this disease and have regular cholesterol check-ups, blood pressure checkups, healthy diets and hopefully would like for everyone to incorporate a regular exercise routine in their lives. The other association that we have with the color red at this specific time of the year is the celebration of Valentine’s Day! Ahhh…That feeling of love and be loved…I am not referring to the love we may feel towards our parents, children, siblings or friends; I am referring to the “love” one feels towards “that” special someone. Maybe that man or woman in your life, that wife or husband, that partner in life…Many poets and writers have used their inks to verbalize that sublime feeling of bliss and hopelessness. Because let’s face it, when Cupid strikes that arrow deep in your heart, the life as you knew, it will forever be changed. I am such a romantic, and I am still patiently awaiting for that blissful and hopelessness feeling that comes when stricken by Cupid’s arrow. Once more would I welcome that feeling that only love can bring. Some would say that the feeling of love is a natural high we feel, but if that was the case, how great would it be if we could bottle it. This reminds me of the character Jean-Baptiste Grenouille from the 2006 movie “Perfume” who was trying to create that perfect scent and in that search he became a notorious murderer. Once he created and bottled that scent, the effect that one drop would have in any human being was of complete frenzy, and beauty seemed to surround those under the effects of it. But some things are better left to the natural order of nature and not force what is yours to have and experience. Keep your body and heart healthy and if you can, love deeply…Happy Valentine’s Day!

SMOkiNg BAN iN BeSt iNtereSt OF HeAltH OF DelAwAreANS I’d like to applaud the recent decision by Gov. Jack Markell to put into effect a smoking ban outside of state office buildings in an effort to promote health and wellness and also protect the financial burden to Delaware taxpayers. As an addiction, smoking claims the lives of nearly 1,200 Delawareans and reaps an economic toll of $678 million to the state. As secondhand smoke, it is just as dangerous: proven to cause lung cancer, heart disease, chronic lung ailments and low birth weight. The prospects for thousands of American jobs and good paychecks were cancelled with the pipeline. Meanwhile two U.S. Navy carrier battle groups steam toward the Arabian Gulf. What is the appeal of Mideast oil to Senator Carper and this Administration when so much oil is within our own American boundaries and/or peacefully assured from our Canadian ally? Canada has oil resources exceeding Saudi Arabia. Canada drives much of its own national prosperity with the methodical and prudent extraction of these resources. Our northern neighbor will sell that oil. It may be sold to us or to China, but it will be sold. The prospect of the Keystone XL pipeline allows the U.S. to access the oil. The Administration shutdown hands it to China. Construction of the pipeline, paid by private investors without taxpayer dollars, creates high wage construction jobs; real jobs. This large project creates a demand throughout our economy. It drives demand for American pipe, the steel to make that pipe, the drivers to deliver the pipe and a technical services infrastructure at multiple work shop locations. Americans would supply all this and more to complete the multi-year project. The Administration’s Secretary of State Clinton said the project as proposed “would not serve the national interest.” What an astonishing remark. This project, even if no jobs were at stake, is a significant remedy to a national security problem. How on earth does continuing any demand for Middle Eastern oil serve our national interest? Is Canada less stable and less reliable than the powder keg of competing sheikdoms, kingdoms and Islamic republics surrounding the Arabian Gulf? Is a pipeline from the Canadian West to the American Heartland less certain in its flow than a parade of super tankers in range of Iranian Silkworm missiles through the narrow Strait of Hormuz? Americans want to give their children the real security provided by peace and prosperity. Peace and prosperity are not found in a politician’s catch phrases wrapped around tired ideologies and worn campaign speeches. These result from patient practical steps out of today’s abyss of endless recession and endless military confrontation. The Keystone XL pipeline will not end the Great American Recession, but it will end the recession for a great many unemployed Americans. That’s a start. The pipeline will not end America’s thirst for foreign oil, but it reduces the oil needed from the world’s most chaotic neighborhoods. That’s a small step for peace in our future. After so many years in Washington Senator Carper, like so many other careerists there, have lost an understanding that prosperity is built one job at a time and peace by taking one wise step at a time. Kevin Wade GOP Candidate for the US Senate DeeP SiX SOMAli PirAteS The recent rescue of hostages in Somalia by a Navy Seal Team brings into focus the ongoing problem we have with the Somali pirates. These pirates continue to wreak havoc on commercial shipping off the coast of Africa, and there are numerous ships and hostages currently being held by the pirates for ransom. In February 2011 four Americans were taken hostage aboard their yacht off Africa, and were subsequently killed by their captors. During the same time frame the pirates commandeered the Italian tanker Savina Caylyn, which can carry $63 million of crude oil; and captured the U.S. bound tanker Irene SL 220 miles off Oman. The Irene SL was carrying 2 million barrels of oil worth $200 million. Maritime industry officials believe over 40% of the world’s seaborne oil supply could be at risk of pirate attacks and this could have an adverse impact on oil prices and the economies of countries dependent on oil imports. Action has to be taken to combat the pirates. Shipping companies should place heavily armed professional guards on ships with shoot to kill orders. All countries with commercial ships traversing the African shipping lanes should provide naval warships to protect shipping, and if necessary, provide convoy escort duty just like they did during WWII. We might need slow moving strafing aircraft located at sea or on land to be available to quickly search out and destroy the pirates in their boats. If the preceding steps do not work, the impacted countries should attempt to rescue the hostages and then sink the pirates’ mother ships, and consider hitting the pirate havens along the coast of Somalia with precision aerial (possibly drones) and naval attacks. Although diplomacy is preferable to military action, the Somali government is too weak to rein in the pirates, and therefore military operations are probably needed to solve the problem. Donald A. Moskowitz Londonderry, NH iS A HeAltH iNSUrANCe reBAte iN yOUr FUtUre? An estimated nine million Americans could receive rebates from their health insurers in 2012. Will you be one of them? The Affordable Care Act, passed nearly two years ago in March 2010, protects consumers by requiring health insurance companies to spend between 80-85 percent of their premium dollars on medical care or improvements, instead of on administration, advertising or executive salaries. The purpose of this provision is to protect consumers from insurers who increase prices without good reason or justification. If insurers fail to meet this standard – one that many insurers already achieve now – they will be required to issue rebates to their customers. The federal Health and Human Services Department estimates these rebates could average $165 per individual. The customers most likely to receive rebates are those who are not part of a large plan through their employer, but instead purchase their insurance on the individual market. This will include many rural small business owners and self-employed workers, such as farmers, ranchers and rural mainstreet entrepreneurs. Insurers will be required to publish the costs of their medical claims costs, administrative costs and taxes by June 1, 2012. Those who qualify for a rebate will receive checks this summer. Of course, insurance companies can avoid paying rebates by lowering premiums. Either way, consumers win. Immigrant entrepreneurs create jobs and strengthen the economy, and the U.S. should tailor immigration laws and policies to encourage the best and the brightest to create businesses on U.S. soil, according to a new joint report issued today by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Immigration Policy Center (IPC). The report, Immigrant Entrepreneurs: Creating Jobs and Strengthening the U.S. Economy examines immigrant entrepreneurship in many different sectors, including neighborhood, growth, transnational, and science and technology firms, and demonstrates how these immigrant businesses create jobs for U.S. workers and contribute to America’s economic growth. “Immigrant-owned growth businesses are hugely important to strengthening local economies, as well as providing jobs essential to economic recovery,” said report author Marcia Drew Hohn, director of the Public Education Institute at The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc. “The U.S. Small Business Association estimates that small businesses have generated 64% of the net new jobs over the past 15 years and credits immigrant businesses with a significant contribution to this job growth.” “Regardless of one’s school of thought, there is very little disagreement among researchers and experts that immigrant entrepreneurship is a powerful and valuable asset to America’s economic future,” said Benjamin Johnson, executive director of the American Immigration Council. “There has been a lot of attention paid to the high tech, highly educated immigrant entrepreneur, this report reinforces that it is less about your degree or the product you produce, and far more about recognizing a need in your community and having the skills and commitment to bring a dream to life.” “The Chamber has a longstanding commitment to championing improvements to federal policies that would create lawful status for immigrant entrepreneurs and permit foreign talent to work in the United States,” said Randy Johnson, senior vice president of Labor, Immigration, and Employee Benefits. “We hope that the report’s findings will spur positive discussions regarding immigration reform, but also provide new fuel for those already ongoing.” The report features profiles of immigrant entrepreneurs and shines a light on some of the difficulties they face. Current immigration laws make it difficult for many immigrant entrepreneurs to contribute to the nation’s growth. The report contains administrative and legislative proposals that taken together could create an atmosphere that fosters growth: • Create an entrepreneur-friendly culture—The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) should create more business-friendly policies, promote and streamline entrepreneurship programs, and launch further engagement opportunities to seek feedback in how to address the unique circumstances of entrepreneurs, new businesses, and startups. • Cut red tape—DHS should not demand excessive documentation or dismiss the achievements of well-qualified applicants who could start businesses or create jobs in the United States. • Create or modify existing visa categories specifically targeted for immigrant entrepreneurs—Congress should be urged to create access to permanent resident status for those who establish a business that produces jobs for U.S. workers. Current law typically only permits foreign nationals who can invest $500,000 or more to stay. • Remove hurdles for foreign students with desirable skills—Immigration law should permit foreign students in graduate programs (especially science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to remain in the United States after graduation. • Recognize that immigrant entrepreneurship occurs across the spectrum of businesses— Immigration policy should address this phenomenon by establishing visa categories that provide opportunities for talented individuals from all backgrounds and walks of life.

Zambullida de Osos Polares de Lewes rompe record.

El domingo 5 de febrero se rompió el record de zambullida cuando 3.685 “Osos Polares” se dieron un chapuzón en el agua helada del Océano Atlántico para ayudar a recabar fondos de más de $650.000 en la Zambullida de Osos Polares 2012 de Lewes en beneficio de los Juegos Paralímpicos de Delaware. Ambos números constituyen un récord en este evento.

“Fue otro año notable, con lo cual se demuestra el apoyo que le brinda la comunidad a los 3.500 atletas de los Juegos Paralímpicos aquí en Delaware”, dijo John Buzby, vocero de los Juegos Paralímpicos de Delaware. “Lo que más deseamos es que los Osos que se zambulleron, y aquellos que los observaron, hayan ganado una apreciación aún mayor de las habilidades de personas con discapacidades intelectuales y no solo en el campo de juego. Es por esto que no tenemos cómo darles suficientes gracias a los Osos“. La temperatura del agua era de 47 grados, lo cual hizo de la Zambullida 2012 la más caliente a la fecha. El record anterior por temperatura del agua fue de 43 grados en el 2006 y en el 2008. La temperatura del aire era 42 grados, un poco más elevada que la temperatura promedio de 20 años de 39 grados. En los últimos 21 años se han recaudado fondos por más de $6.15 millones en este evento anual, el cual es presentado por Wawa y Comcast.

Plunge records were broken on Sunday as 3,685 “Polar Bears” took an icy dip into the Atlantic Ocean to help raise over $650,000 at the 2012 Lewes Polar Bear Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Delaware. Both numbers are records for the event. “It was another remarkable year, which just goes to show you the support the community has for the 3,500 Special Olympics athletes here in Delaware,” said Jon Buzby, spokesperson for Special Olympics Delaware. “What we hope more than anything, is that the Bears who plunged, and those who watched them, walked away with an even greater appreciation for the abilities of people with intellectual disabilities, and not just on the playing fields. For that, we can’t thank the Bears enough!” The water temperature was 47 degrees, which made the 2012 Plunge the warmest to date. The previous record for water temperature was 43 degrees, set in 2006 and 2008. The air temperature was 42 degrees, slightly higher than the 20-year average of 39 degrees. Over the past 21 years, over $6.15 million has been raised at the annual event, which is presented by Wawa and Comcast.

Annie Coons, wife of Delaware’s Senator Chris Coons visited Head Start at the West End center to know more about the progresses of the center, mainly regarding the assistance to Hispanic families.
Tuvo también palabras de elogio para esta sociedad entre West End Neighborhood y el programa de Alfabetización de Delaware, “es una sociedad muy productiva y un programa fabuloso, estoy muy impresionada con los adultos que tienen el coraje de venir a aprender y veo que los niños están aprendiendo mucho al mismo tiempo”. Annie Coons comentó que sus tres hijos, por otra parte, están aprendiendo a hablar español y “espero que en un futuro lo hagan muy bien, ya que hay más oportunidades cuando se es bilingüe”, dijo. Lillian López, quien trabaja en los servicios a las familias desde hace 10 años, dijo que en este centro el 85% de la familias son hispanas y que ahora cuentan con la oportunidad de no sólo aprender el inglés como segunda lengua, sino también que el centro les facilite cuidado de sus hijos mientras asisten a las clases. Cynthia E. Shermeyer, quien está al frente del programa de alfabetización de adultos en Delaware, comentó que en todos estos años ha sentido grandes satisfacciones, como por ejemplo el hecho de que una de las asistentes al programa después de asistir a una conferencia sobre el cáncer de mama, tuviera el coraje de coordinar una cita con el doctor por sí misma, en inglés y pudo ser diagnosticada a tiempo para recibir su tratamiento. Ninguna de estas dos organizaciones podría proveer este programa individualmente, pero juntas están marcando una diferencia en la vida de las familias del Head Start en el West End Neighborhood Center”. Accompanied by various directors and members of the organization Parents Learning English At School, the Senator’s wife visited the facilities and said to be very pleased with what she saw there. “I understand the importance of Hispanic parents improving their knowledge of English to achieve a better integration and better job opportunities, and at the same time it is commendable to see the work of these volunteers helping them improve.” She also had praising words for the partnership between West End Neighborhood and Delaware’s Literacy Program, “it is a very productive partnership and a fabulous program, I am very impressed with the adults that have the courage to come to learn and I also see that the children are learning a lot as well.” Annie Coons commented that her three children are learning Spanish, “and I hope that in the future they will speak it very well, because there are better opportunities out there when you are bilingual,” she said. Lillian López, who has been working for 10 years in the services for the families, said that in this center, 85% of the families are Hispanic who now have the opportunity not only to learn English as a second language, but to have the center watch after their kids when they are in classes. Cynthia E. Shermeyer, chair of the adult literacy program in Delaware, stated that in all of these years she has felt great satisfaction, like for instance the fact that one of the attendees of the program, after attending a conference on breast cancer, had the audacity to set an appointment with the doctor by herself, in English, and she could be timely diagnosed to receive treatment. It is things like these that encourage us to continue with this program, which is about to hit its 15th birthday.” We hope financing continues so that this program of teaching English to adults along with child care services can continue. “The PLEAS (Parents Learning English At School) program is an example of 2 nonprofit organizations working together to leverage resources to develop a program for the surrounding community. Neither organization could individually provide this program, but together they are making a difference in the lives of Head Start families at the West End Neighborhood Center.”

Indian River Inlet Bridge Open to Traffic

The Indian River Inlet Bridge is open to passenger traffic. After eight years, three bridge designs and more than 1.2 million man hours, the new Indian River Inlet Bridge is finally open to traffic. In an event commemorating the historic opening of the gleaming-new structure, Governor Jack Markell, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Department of Transportation (DelDOT) Secretary Shailen Bhatt drove the first passenger vehicle over the bridge. In the next several days, one northbound lane will be open to vehicular traffic. Demolition work will then begin on the old bridge. In the coming months, Delaware contractor George & Lynch will complete the roadway approaches on the remaining two lanes on the northbound side of the bridge in preparation for a spring 2012 opening for all four lanes and the pedestrian and bikeway.

“Bridges are about connecting people and commerce,” said Governor Jack Markell. “We depend on bridges to help us get from one place to another. This new bridge helps move goods and services, Delawareans and visitors. It’s one of the most important bridges in our state and a vital link for people driving to vacation destinations, businesses and jobs along the coast.” The $150 million bridge was erected by Skanska Southeast under a design-build contract with DelDOT. Sixty Delaware business have been suppliers to the project. The bridge is 2,600 feet long, 108 feet wide and situated 45 feet above the inlet. A great percentage of the workers that contributed to the success of this project are Hispanics from southern Delaware. “This long-awaited day marks the opening of the Indian River Inlet Bridge connecting Sussex County communities along the coast,” said U.S. Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) “The bridge will welcome visitors to the southern beach resorts and ensure local residents can continue to get to work, school and to the hospital. This state and federally funded infrastructure project will ensure safe travel for now and into the next century. ” “For DelDOT, this milestone is more than just a big day,” said Transportation Secretary Shailen Bhatt. “It is a time when we can reflect on the virtues and rewards of teamwork. Ingredientes Relleno de carne 1½ libras de carne de res molida, baja en grasa 2 pimientos verdes, sin semillas y picados finamente 1 cebolla mediana, picada finamente 3 hojas de laurel Masa 8 plátanos maduros (amarillos) grandes, pelados 10 tazas de agua 2 cucharadas de aceite de oliva ¼ taza de cilantro (culantro), picado finamente 1 taza de caldo de res bajo en sal 5 ajicitos (tiny chili peppers) ½ cucharadita de pasta de achiote 2 dientes de ajo, picados finamente 1 taza de salsa de tomate Otras capas 5 claras de huevo 1½ tazas de habichuelas (vainitas) tiernas cocidas n ½ taza de queso Mozzarella bajo en grasa, rallado Preparación: 1. Precaliente el horno a 175°C. 2. En un sartén grande sofría la carne molida. Escurra la grasa de la carne y agregue los demás ingredientes del relleno. Cocine sobre fuego mediano por 5 minutos más y retire del fuego. 3. Pele los plátanos maduros y hiérvalos en 10 tazas de agua hasta que estén muy blandos. Retírelos de la olla escurriendo el agua. En un tazón grande, aplaste los plátanos y añada el aceite de oliva. Mezcle bien hasta que se convierta en una masa suave. En otro recipiente, bata las claras de huevo hasta que estén espumosas. 4. Ponga la mitad de la mezcla de los plátanos en un molde para hornear de unos 28 x 35.5 centímetros (11 x 14 pulgadas). Ingredients Meat Filling Layer 1½ pounds lean ground beef 2 medium green peppers without seeds, chopped 1 medium yellow onion, chopped 3 bay leaves Dough 8 large yellow plantains, ripe and peeled 10 cups water 2 tablespoons olive oil ¼ cup cilantro, chopped 1 cup low-sodium beef broth 5 ajicitos (tiny sweet peppers) ½ tablespoon annatto paste (achiote) 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 cup tomato sauce Other Layers 5 egg whites, beaten 1½ cups cooked green beans ½ cup low-fat mozzarella, shredded Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 350 °F. 2. Brown the meat in a large pot. Drain the fat and add the remaining filling ingredients. Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes. Set aside. 3. Boil the peeled plantains in 10 cups of water until soft, then drain. In a large bowl, mash the plantains, then add the olive oil. Mix well, making it into a soft dough. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until they are foamy. 4. Spread half of the plantain dough in an 11” x 14” baking pan. Add a layer of the meat filling, egg whites, and half of the green beans. 5. Repeat these layers, and top with a final layer of plantains and egg whites. Sprinkle with the mozzarella cheese. 6. Bake for 20 minutes.

The latest data from the Center for Disease Control on out-of-wedlock births does not bode well for Delaware.

This ranges from 34% of all births to whites, 65% for Hispanics, and 72% for blacks. In 2009 the nation hit a high water mark with 41% of all births out-of-wedlock. Among all the states, Delaware ties for fourth highest. The proportion of births to Delaware’s white unwed mothers is above the nation (34% vs 29%), while the black rate is similar to the nation, and the rate among Hispanics is well above the U.S. (65% vs 53%). Is this a cause for concern? Yes, according to a compilation of recent scholarship by the University of Virginia National Marriage Project. Although the divorce rate is coming down, cohabitation is soaring and accounts for more than half of the births to unmarried mothers. A growing research literature shows that compared to children raised in married families, children in cohabiting households are about as likely as children living in single-parent families to live in poverty, have poorer health, do poorly in school, drop out of high school, have higher levels of psychological problems and mental illness, attempt suicide, use drugs and engage in criminal activity. Cohabitation is not the functional equivalent of marriage. Marriage is certainly not a panacea for all social ills. There are single parents who despite all the challenges are able to provide a very stable family life, just as there are unstable married couple families. When it comes to child well-being, however, research suggests that family structure is a better predictor of children’s psychological and social welfare, whereas poverty is a better predictor of educational attainment. Being raised by unmarried parents in a poverty household is, obviously, problematic. So, what challenges are facing Delaware as a result of nearly one out of every two children being borne out of wedlock? Obviously this significantly increases the complexity and difficulty of education younger children. Not only will children be less academically prepared, they will be struggling with many behavioral and emotional issues. It also means a continued rising demand for social services, including Medicaid and youth services. It also makes it likely that Delaware’s already high violent crime rate will stay that way. What might be done to curb this destructive trend? More abortions are not the answer since the abortion rate and out-of-wedlock birth rate among the states are not correlated…that is, more abortions does not reduce the proportion of births out-of-wedlock. And Delaware already has a high abortion rate. And there is no correlation among states in the out-of-wedlock birth rate and self-reported religious commitment. Perhaps it would be helpful if schools were allowed to reinforce the values of sex after and within marriage, rather than the Hollywood philosophy of sleep together anywhere, anytime. Perhaps it would help if young people were made aware of the standard outcomes of cohabitation relative to marriage. And exposure to the realities of raising children while working full-time while taking community college courses might be helpful. Data and research may lead to other important causal relationships. A major driver of out-of-wedlock birth in the black community is the limited pool of marriageable young black males…that is young men who are employed full time. And a major obstacle to the employment of many young black males is a felony record. Certainly there are other steps that might be taken or tried. But to do nothing to address this disturbing trend is not an option.

¿Cómo Predecir Si Una Pareja Fracasará?
Con un 91% de Exactitud
El día de San Valentín puede ser una fecha mágica para muchas parejas, pero también puede ser un día de mucha tensión y decepción para otras a las que no les está yendo bien. “Odio el día de los enamorados porque me hace recordar lo bonito que era antes y lo triste que es hoy mi relación;” comenta Margot, una de mis clientes de sicoterapia. Todas las parejas pasan por dificultades, pero algunas parecen destinadas al fracaso, separación y/o divorcio. Margot, quien está preocupada por el futuro de su relación, me preguntó si había alguna manera CIENTIFICA de poder predecir si una pareja se separará. La respuesta es sí. Si desea conocer los signos que anticipan una separación, continúe leyendo; es posible que esta información salve su propia relación o la de alguna persona cercana. El doctor John Gottman, reconocido sicólogo e investigador, es capaz de predecir con un 91% de exactitud si una pareja se va a quedar junta o se va a divorciar con tan solo escucharlos hablar durante 5 minutos. Esto no lo hace de una manera mágica, sino prestando atención a signos que le han tomado más de 40 años de investigación identificar. Uno de los signos es la manera en que la pareja se comporta cuando tienen un conflicto. Hay 4 comportamientos que el Dr. Gottman llama “Los Jinetes del Apocalipsis” para una relación. Estar a la defensiva generalmente se muestra como devolver una queja con otra queja, por ejemplo: “¡tú eres peor!” o “tú también lo haces.” Una actitud defensiva está dando el siguiente mensaje: ”El problema no soy yo. Eres tú.” La pareja defensiva no escucha, no da su brazo a torcer ni pide perdón. 3.- Desprecio: El desprecio incluye todo aquello que haga sentir al otro atacado en su dignidad. Puede ir desde el gesto de dar vuelta a los ojos cuando la otra persona está tratando de decir algo a usar sarcasmo o burla para hacer sentir al otro miserable. A menudo, el uso de malas palabras o apodos para humillar a la pareja es una forma de desprecio. El Desprecio, el peor de los cuatro jinetes del Apocalipsis, envenena las relaciones porque implica disgusto. 4.- La actitud evasiva: Esto pasa cuando el que escucha se cierra totalmente. Es como hablar con las paredes. La persona evasiva actúa como si no le importara en absoluto lo que el otro dice, como si ni siquiera lo oyera. En una conversación normal, el que escucha suele dar señales de estar escuchando, como asentar con la cabeza o decir “si” o “ya” de vez en cuando. How to Predict if a Couple will fail?
With 91% Accuracy
Valentine’s Day can be a magical time for many couples, but can also be a day of stress and disappointment to other couples that are not doing well. “I hate Valentine’s Day because it reminds me of how nice my relationship was before and how sad it is now,” says Margot, one of my psychotherapy clients. All couples go through difficulties, but some seem destined to failure, separation and / or divorce. Margot, who is concerned about the future of her relationship, asked me if there was any scientific way to predict whether a couple will separate. The answer is yes. If you wish to learn the signs which might lead to a separation, read the following information that may save your own relationship or that of someone close to you. Dr. John Gottman, renowned psychologist and researcher, is able to predict with 91% accuracy whether a couple will stay together or will divorce by simply listening to them talk for 5 minutes. This is not done in a magical way, but paying attention to signs that have taken Dr. Gottman more than 40 years of research to identify. One sign is the way the couple behaves when they have a conflict. There are 4 behaviors that Dr. Gottman calls “Horsemen of the Apocalypse” for a relationship. Next, I will describe these behaviors based on his famous book “7 Golden Rules to Live in Romance”: A. - Negative criticism: Often, criticism appears as a complaint in which one blames the other person, making him/her feel like his/her character or personality is deficient or inadequate. Negative criticism often starts with “you always ....” Or “You never ...” You will always have some criticism for the person you live with, but too much negative criticism can open the door to other “Horsemen of the Apocalypse.” 2. - Defensiveness: These are the counterattacks people use to defend themselves or avoid responsibility for a problem. Being defensive is usually shown as returning a complaint with another complaint, for example, “You’re worse!” Or “You do the same!.” Defensiveness is giving the following message: “The problem is not me. It’s you. “The defensive partner does not listen, does not accept mistakes nor offers apologies. 3. - Contempt: Contempt includes everything that might make someone feel attacked on his/her dignity. You can go from the gesture of rolling the eyes when the other person is trying to say something, to use sarcasm to make the other feel miserable. Often, the use of bad language or namecalling for diminishing the partner is a form of contempt. Contempt, the worst of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, poisons relations because it involves disgust. . 4 - Stonewalling: This happens when the listener is completely disconnected. It’s like talking to the walls. The evasive person acts as if he/she did not care at all what the other says. In a normal conversation, the listener usually shows signs of listening such as nodding or saying “yes” from time to time. But an evasive person does not provide these signals, instead, he/she tends to look away or down without saying a word. If you, your partner or a couple who you know exhibit these behaviors, not all is lost. Using Dr. Gottman marital therapy, about 70% of couples report an improvement in their relationship. Nuevo Programa CAPLines de la Administración de Pequeñas Empresas
La Administración de Pequeñas Empresas de los Estados Unidos (SBA por sus siglas en inglés) comprende que no es fácil operar un negocio pequeño inclusive en buenos tiempos económicos. Al analizar estos últimos años, vemos que la situación crediticia –aunque mejoró en el 2008- ha tenido un impacto importante en la comunidad de pequeños negocios. El Programa CAPLines de la SBA ayuda a las pequeñas empresas a cubrir sus necesidades de capital tanto de corto plazo como de trabajo cíclico. La SBA se reúne con regularidad con entidades crediticias y con asociados contribuyentes de recursos para obtener sus comentarios sobre cómo mejorar nuestros programas de préstamos y servicios. La SBA se dirigió a todos los 50 estados el año pasado para obtener los comentarios de más de 150 entidades crediticias de las comunidades en relación a cómo este programa subutilizado pudiera funcionar más efectivamente para prestamistas y pequeñas empresas. The U. S. Small Business Administration understands that it is not easy to operate a small business even in good economic times. As we look back over the past few years, the credit situation – although improved from 2008 – has had a major impact on the small business community. SBA’s CAPLines Program helps small businesses meet their short-term and cyclical working capital needs. SBA regularly meets with lenders and resources partners to get feedback on ways to improve our loan programs and services. SBA reached out to all 50 states last year for comments from more than 150 community lenders on ways this underutilized program could work more effectively for lenders and small businesses. SBA provides up to an 85 percent guarantee and there are four loan programs under our CAPLines Program: Seasonal Line of Credit Program, Contract Loan Program, Builders Line Program, and Working Capital Line. This President and Congress knew that getting small businesses the capital they needed was a top priority. That is why the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the Small Business Jobs Act, which provided key enhancements such as temporary higher government guarantees on SBA loans and permanently increasing SBA loan limits, was so critical in getting capital flowing to small businesses. For example: when fulfilling a purchase order request, the same order can be used as collateral to obtain an SBA-guaranteed line of credit to hire more workers and buy more materials. • Small business subcontractors can obtain an SBA-guaranteed line of credit to finance their work on a contract with a federal prime contractor. • SBA will no longer require small business owners without building or equipment to use their personal assets as collateral to secure working capital. • Small businesses working on a contract that requires surety bonding can obtain an SBAguaranteed line of credit. Whether you are a startup, currently in business, or a business experiencing difficulties, SBA has programs to help you along the way. As you take time to evaluate your business needs and set goals for this year, don’t forget to reach out to SBA resources. There, hidden in the sands of the African desert, world-renowned paleontologist Paul Sereno, Ph.D., found the discoveries of a lifetime. Giants: African Dinosaurs features these breakthroughs. The exhibit is on view at the Delaware Museum of Natural History until Feb. 26, 2012. In conjunction with Giants: African Dinosaurs, Sam and Lisa Hobbs of Greenville, Del., are loaning their bronze sculptures of African mammals to the Museum for a special exhibit on view in the Skylight Gallery.

DelaWare art muSeum PreSeNtS HoWarD Pyle: American master rediscovered. Howard Pyle (1853 – 1911) was one of America’s most popular illustrators and storytellers during a period of explosive growth in the publishing industry. A celebrity in his lifetime, Pyle’s widely circulated images of pirates, knights, and historical figures were featured in publications such as Harper’s Monthly and were admired by artists and authors like Vincent Van Gogh and Mark Twain. Yet, despite his widespread popularity, Pyle’s reputation has survived only among illustration scholars and enthusiasts. Until now his work has been virtually omitted from the larger story of art. In celebration of the centenary of Pyle’s death, the Delaware Art Museum is thrilled to present Howard Pyle: American Master Rediscovered, a major retrospective exhibition featuring 79 paintings and drawings created by Pyle between 1876 and 1910, on view until March 4, 2012. This exhibition presents a fresh perspective on Pyle’s familiar images, exploring his interaction with the art and culture of his time and effectively repositioning him within the broader spectrum of 19th-century art. This retrospective exhibition also marks the 100th anniversary of the Delaware Art Museum, which was founded in 1912 to preserve and exhibit Pyle’s work following his untimely death in November 1911. The Museum’s Centennial Celebration begins in November 2011 with the opening of Howard Pyle: American Master Rediscovered and ends in June 2013 with the exhibition Contemporary Illustrators Honor Howard Pyle. Public tours of Howard Pyle: American Master Rediscovered are available at 2:00 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday (starting November 12, 2011 and ending March 4, 2012).
